I don't think people give Mark's VA enough credit for this scene, he does an incredible job sounding like he's been brutally maimed.
Yet still firm in the assertion that deep down there's good in his Father.
he is
they got his dad to beat him up in the studio for an authentic performance
Fun fact: his voice actor plays gleen from the walking dead
and another fun fact: the twd comic and invincible comic was created by the same man
@@unbreakabledl Well...Mark's VA got tons of practice after he took a baseball bat to the face.
In a way, the fact that he ran away, instead of consoling his son, or just changing his tune like some villains do when they turn onto the "right path"? It makes him seem even more human. In just 5 minutes we see Nolan go through pride, excitement, fury, helplessness, and even regret and fear of losing his deeply rooted beliefs. He undergoes a rapid breakdown of his ego, and realizes that at the core of his soul, he has humanity in him, and he can't bear to let it go. And that "You Dad, I'd still have you" I think really makes him realize what he has done, even if he doesn't regret killing the other humans, he finally realizes that at the core of it all, he just beat his own son, the person he loves and knows the most in this world.
If I may also add to your brilliant explanation, it's also him realising that he lost a potentially viable path with Mark's words. Many people hear it as "I'll still have you" in future tense but the use of "I'd" places it past tense. Nolan has gone way too far to the point that Mark gave up on living the long viltrumite life with his father. A path Nolan didnt even consider until now which is what causes him to see that he had been so blinded by the cause that he didnt see something so simple. Now it's too late.
@@hk1371I'd is a conditional lmao it's not that deep
@@maximus3294 it can be both. A path lost and a path wanted.
In a nutshell, the whole scene hinges on Nolan brainwashing himself into believing he's still a loyal Viltrumite soldier, so he can brainwash Mark into being a loyal Viltrumite soldier alongside him and "Conquer Earth like father and son", when all he wanted was the "father and son part"
Before the beatdown started, when Nolan was going around killing random people and Mark tried to stop, at some points he says something "I was waiting for you to gain superpowers, and I wished you didn't, because now that's the only way"
When Nolan started to grow fond of Mark, he did everything the bad kind of "helicopter", controlling father does believing he's right.
He contemplated Mark growing up as a normal human, having fun with his peers while he would be a good loyal Viltrumite and let the Empire rule on Earth while showering Mark with material things (he mentions Viltrum bringing science and riches to the enslaved colonies).
He contemplated Mark growing up as strong as himself, going around enslaving planet and keeping themselves companies after Debbie and everyone Mark knew died, knowing he cursed his son with nigh-immortality but he could give him a place among people like themselves, at his side.
The moment Mark offers him to just be there, he realizes he already blew any chance of that, so he's left with the only option to flee and crying on what he lost because he believed he could make anything right
@@DrTofu83 The scene is also Nolan trying to justify his lack of empathy to his immortality. When he called Debbie a pet, it's the equivalent to us and dogs/cats, we love them but most not in the same capacity as humans; not to mention they don't have the same rights as us. He had to kill Mark and anyone who resists the Viltramite takeover, he was about to put him down like a dog he loved that went rabid. The internal conflict at that very moment was "what's the point if it doesn't last, there's nothing at the end" vs "If you're at the end with me, it'll be alright". Then the "Dad?", Nolan looks at his son who would share the misery of eternity with him, it contradicts his conditioning/brainwashing.
"What's 17 more years? I can always start again, make another kid!" He isn't telling Mark that, he's telling himself.
The whole fight was basically him beating the shit out of his son and slaughtering people so he can convince himself he's in the right.
"Who are you trying to convince?"

0:38 I just noticed that Omni-Man is smiling and giving off that “who cares” vibe, it contrasts so hard with his state of mind a few minutes later, jeez
So ignoring the mem stuff for a second...you can honestly feel Nolan's hatred for himself and how he is trying so hard to convince himself that he doesn't love Mark and Debbie. However he does love and care about them. Those 20 years didn't mean nothing to him...they meant everything to him.
Humanity. A blessing, or a virus?
It's used in stories that involve humanoid races, and in the end, acquiring that virtue changes the tides of a battle or story.
Honestly, I think he simply had a psychological break, seeing Mark with his powers. He had a moment of despair where he felt it was ‘all going to be over soon’ (the comics stated he had a little less than a whole 1000 years to himself with the planet, so that sort of runs home this theory to me, since if he was acting logical, then he wouldn’t have acted so soon)
@@Norinia i think i agree with this
@@Norinia Yeah. All the other viltrumite conquerors probably have hundreds of children by their first year. But Nolan took his sweet time and took care of Debbie and Mark, meaning that he loves them.
That’s exactly why he pulled his punch back and why he abandoned his post

That shot of Nolan desperately fighting the urge to cry like his life depends on it always gets me.

Nolan has had the belief that his worth as a person is intrinsically tied to his physical/mental strength beaten into him so thoroughly that part of him thinks experiencing the slightest bit of hesitation at *murdering his own child with his bare hands* for getting in his way is an unforgivable sin.

“You, Dad. I’d still have you.”
“As a member of the abusive parents community, I would like to humbly reject your offer.”
*wheeze*
While true - up to this point in his life, Mark has had a *suprelative* father. To his family Nolan was loving, supportive, wise, and protective. He'd never laid a finger on Mark in anger prior to the events of the show, nor been anything but a caring and attentive parent. Hence why Mark still cares, because, deep down, even Nolan is still trying to convince himself that his wife and son mean nothing to him.
Sadly the difference between this and many abusive situations is that most of the time abuse starts early. Children learn from a young age that their parents are to be feared, usually during early early years. This creates an expectation of the parents as abusive, and as the child ages they don't expect trust or love from their parents. This is especially true of emotionally abusive parents.
However, in this case, Mark had already built up a relationship with his father that isn't abusive, since as a child up until the events of this show, he never was anything but a little cold at times. The man that raised him was a loving father. So what Mark sees isn't an abusive father but his father being abusive. Not sure if that's clear but basically he doesn't associate the abuse with his father because it is inconsistent with his actions before. He knows his father is capable of love, so when he does *this shit*, Mark thinks he's acting out of character due to some external circumstance. He doesn't go "man what a shitty father I've had" he thinks "Man why is he acting so shitty."
It's a hard thing to explain but TDLR expectations built up over years in a relationship especially children's early years affect the way they approach things when something inconsistent with these expectations occurs.
Mark gets rejected by all abusive parents
*That is why he didn’t offer anything to you*

Omni-Man: Think Lui Kang... THINK!
I think with the amazing acting J K Simmons provides, and the fantastic writing for Omni-Man and Mark, people tend to overlook just how amazing Mark's mom is.
She's a fantastic character through the show. A great mother, and awesome wife, and a wonderful person - a wonderful _human,_ genuinely making Nolan feel for humanity (or rather Mark) just that bit more, even if it ultimately isn't her that convinces him he's on the wrong path.
think Mark think, with a few pictures of spiderman, we could make millions
500000 iq
fun fact: invincible and marvel did a collab where mark and peter met each other
@@troythemakyr then Triple J gets superpowers and becomes Omni Man
I'm so confused why are people saying stuff about spiderman when this is invincible. Can tell me why people are saying this stuff?
@@shashankamonka3633 the guy voicing omniman is also James Jonah from Sam Ramis spiderman movies
Amazon Prime themselves know the potential of this meme.
Always has been
2 memes. “What’s 17 more years” and “Think Mark think!”
THINK NETFLIX THINK
But its not a meme
I never saw the series and i noo saw it almost all of it foor the meme
"What's 17 more years?"
If we take the line "You'll live 1000's years!" to mean like 10,000 then 17 more years would be.... *2 Months* for Omni-Man.
If "1000's of years" means 100,000 then 17 more years would be *6 days.* Omni-man's entire life on earth, his marriage, the time he spent with Mark, and all the friendships he'd made, would be the equivalent of spending ONE week with a roommate in college...
It kinda puts his thoughts into perspective.
EXTRA:
"What will you have after 500 years?"
10,000 years of life assumption: 500 years is the equivalent of 5 years. Less than Middle school and Highschool.
100,000 years of life assumption: 500 years is the equivalent of 6 months. Less than a single school year.
Thinking about it in these terms, Viltrumites not taking the lives they take that seriously becomes a lot easier to understand.
I like the little pause before he said "...or die."
Jk Simmons’s voice acting is so good. I’d steal his vocal cords if I can
I’d steal his talent and experience. He could easily be a mono voice, but he does SO MUCH with each performance he creates completely different characters.
@@andrewdussault2315 You didn't get the joke
He even looks like J. Jonah Jameson
I'm waiting for the internet to edit in lines from Whiplash for this show.
I feel like he was dragging
Weird how the meme is “think mark, think!” But he only says “think mark!”
he says "Think, Mark! Think!" in the comics and it sounds better that way tbh.
@@yobbiden very true
Its the same as the SpongeBob *Aight ima head out* meme when in context hes actually sitting down lol
That's the Mandela Effect for ya. Kinda like the "Luke, I am your father" that was never said that way.
wow, what a mandela effect
That was BRUTAL and heartbreaking!! The sound of the blows was painful!!
But very emotional and hearttouching when Omniman said: _"what will you have after 500 years!?!"_
Mark: _"you dad. I'd still have you."_ That actually brought tears to my eyes again... It's too emotional... I completely ignored the meme in this!!
Love how you guys actually post original meme scenes and embrace the meme culture
I like how Omni man knocks Marks’ teeth out, then when he flashbacks it shows young Mark playing baseball with his baby teeth missing. Such a contrast. It’s this attention to detail that makes this show so amazing.
Wow, I never noticed that. That's kinda deep.
hes also looking at his face at the end of the flashback w no teeth and when it transitions back well yeah
Knocking his teeth out reminded him of little mark and that moment. That's the reason for the flashback. Maybe Omni-man does have some humanity.
I mean I think the scene was specifically zooming in on this fact. I'll say that it was detailed but I don't think it's attention to detail or anything that was unexpected lol
But when Mark recovers the teeth grow back! Amazing recovery skills!
I cannot believe Amazon of all things acknowledges memes.
Well. They are also the one who animated this series. Of course they would notice it.
Lmao amazon hearted this but no reply
too bad they don't acknowledge workers rights
We all human
Only Dutch Amazon, mind you
"What will you have in 500 years!?"
"Sonic Adventure 3 dad."
3:21 Legendary Moment
I feel like Omni man is literally designed after James Jonah Jameson and then they even choose J. K. Simmons to voice him. What a perfect cast
Well if you go and search up invincible comic from 2003 it would actually some what reassemble j.k simmons
That mustache follows him everywhere
Oh so thats why theres so many comments about him
Makes sense now
He looks like Charles Dera
Kirkman noted the mustache was inspired by his own dad’s mustache
I love how the meme is “THINK, MARK, THINK!!!” When he only says “Think” once lol
Edit; holy crap, look at those likes! Ya like me, ya really like me c: ya might like my lofi remixes of hero themes too, maybe give me requests ;)
I could've sworn he said think twice before but now watching back he only says it once
to make it more dramatic, lol
Think Mark, think is how it is written in the comic book
Right!
In the comic he says think twice
gonna always cry when mark says "you, dad"
10/10 right in the feels
3:39 okay but why does he look like hilter
😂
