I remember that you have a special relationship to drums and saxophones. You still haven‘t reacted to „Aja“ by Steely Dan. One of their best songs with for me THE BEST DRUM AND SAXOPHONE PERFOMANCE IN POP HISTORY. Please react to Aja!
GOAT - my favorite. What about those Porcaro fills in the outtro. Even with the noise reduction fiasco katy Lied remains one of the greatest albums of all time IMO.
This song is a gorgeous, breathtaking masterpiece, highlighted by the saxophone solo by Phil Woods. Woods was one of the most respected, accomplished bebop saxophone players ever, and he knocked out this solo in one take.
I could be wrong but, I think Dr. Wu is his dealer. Katy represents heroin. The word “ song “ refers to taking the drug ( smoking heroin rather than using a needle was popular in the 70’s when this was recorded). He is thinking back to the first time he met his dealer aka Dr. Wu. and how he regrets becoming an addict, “ All night long we would sing that ( Stupid Song )realizing it was a stupid choice he made back then. But right now he’s strung out and wonders why Dr. Wu is taking so long to bring him some more Katy, he finally goes searching for him and was surprised to see him passed out or dead, he can’t get him to respond, “. Are you with me Doctor? Can you hear me Doctor? Has “She” finally got to you? Can you hear me Doctor?......... There’s other lyrics that will make more sense. Listen again and read the lyrics. I’m just guessing you guys so if I’m wrong don’t beat me up too much Lol. Love your channel bro you’re doing great.
Donald Fagen describes it as "kind of a love-dope triangle," adding, "I think usually when we do songs of a romantic nature, one or more of the participants in the alliance will come under the influence of someone else or some other way of life, and that will usually end up in either some sort of compromise or a split. In this song the girl meets somebody who leads another kind of life, and she's attracted to it. Then she comes under the domination of someone else, and that results in the ending of the relationship or some amending of the relationship. In 'Dr. Wu' that someone else is a dope habit. personified as Doctor Wu."
A bit of history on drummer Jeff Porcaro heard here. While he was still in high school he was hired to drum for TV's the "Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour," as well as their touring band. My wife and I recognized him from the TV show when we saw him in concert with the singing duo on March 19, 1972 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. At the time, it was the highest-grossing concert in the city's history. Two years later we're attending our first Steely Dan concert in April 1974 when we recognized Jeff as the second drummer alongside Jim Hodder. He was so good on that "Pretzel Logic" tour that Becker & Fagen made him the featured drummer on their March 1975 album "Katy Lied." Later that year he did the same on Boz Scagg's Grammy-winning album "Silk Degrees" -- and all this before he ever gained fame with the band Toto in 1977.
I love love love this song. The Katy Lied album was my soundtrack to my summer of 1976. Never tire of the genius of Steely Dan. So sad that they are no longer. RIP Walter Becker
Two songs from the "Katy Lied" album, "Doctor Wu" and "Any World (That I'm welcome To)," are among my very favorite Steely Dan recordings that for some reason they have refused to perform in concert since they resumed touring in Aug. 1993. Before that, Fagen ignored them during his brief fling with the New York Rock & Soul Revue. Michael Omartian's brilliant playing on the Bosendorfer piano dominates both songs, and the unforgettable alto sax solos on "Doctor Wu" gave Danfans appreciation for jazz veteran Phil Woods two years before the whole world would discover him on the Billy Joel smash hit "Just the Way You Are." Becker & Fagen finally performed "Doctor Wu" on "Rarities Night" at New York's Beacon Theater in 2011, but still ignored "Any World."
@@NoCanDu Lucky you! My wife and I first saw Michael McDonald with Steely Dan in April 1974 on their "Pretzel Logic" tour, then followed him over to The Doobie Brothers when Becker & Fagen stopped touring for the next 19 years.
@@andyinoregon Lucky you! I was actually “lucky” enough to be working for Hall & Oates in 2003 when they did a summer tour with AWB and Michael McD! My favorite tour! He is the nicest man! 😎
@@NoCanDu What a great triple bill tour that was. Became an instant Hall & Oates fan the first time I heard "She's Gone" on the radio in November 1973. Michael McDonald and Hall & Oates pretty much define the term "blue-eyed soul."
There's a reason you love Jazz, Jazz Fusion, when It's down well it changes the space and vibe of a room, a concert, a club or even if one is alone. It makes you feel cool, confident and relaxed.
You are SPOT ON with your reaction. All the instruments sound "clean" to me. None of them get "washed out". Steely Dan has always had the ability to "layer" their songs. I believe the real magic is in the production and engineering of their music. Without impeccable production this could have been merely a very good song but I consider it a masterpiece. Plus Fagan and Becker had always hired the best in the business for their studio work.
SD consisted of 2 people Donald Fagan&Walter Beck, the musicans they used were studio musicans an they did do a few concerts Roger Nicole's was a recording engineer an got a Grammy for AJA. related by marriage
Dr. Wu is one of my favorite SD songs, and I didn’t even hear it until 5 or 6 years after it was recorded. For me it’s that saxophone, though. I love the entirety of the song, but that sax by Woods is so fine.
As far as the drumming on this track it's Jeff Porcaro, but Steely Dan may use 2 or 3 different drummers on any particular record. The one thing you can be sure of, their session guys are all of the highest quality available. They are the best of the best.
Chod...........I had to reach out to you because as a young person you have done so many YES songs and albums and I want you to review the New Yes group with their new album of course that is coming out on October 1, 2021. But until that time I think I will request you to react to their 2020 album, entitled, Fly From Here. It is 52 minutes. I am listening to it right now......and I am really digging it....it different with not many transitions as previous album.....but has the transitions of a smooth Jazz album....like some Peter White(Famous Jazz Acoustic Guitar) would create or David Benoit(the famous Jazz Pianist). Katy lies you can see it in her eyes. You should listen to the song "Aja" You would love it. I know you like drums, the drums on Aja are unreal. wait for the solos. More jazz
You should revisit Journey again. After your comments on King of Pain I think you would like Journey’s Sandcastles even though it’s from their Japanese soundtrack album most have never heard. The drummer (Steve smith) really plays up his jazz background on it and there’s plenty of sax on the track.

The drummer (late, great Jeff Porcaro) was only 19 when he drummer on all but one of the songs on this album. Great song, great album and great band.
It would be hard for me to pick a favorite SD song, but this would be near the top.

For something a little more on the rocking side of Steely Dan bend your ears to My Old School. The guitars and horns are off the charts.
i could not think the girl could be so rude….my stepdad went to William & Mary and he lovedSteely Dan so that song reminds me of him
I love this song. The melody is really fantastic here.
Steely Dan was a predecessor of Smooth Jazz including The Rippingtons and The Yellowjackets and Fatburger!!!
Amen Kevan...
Love the Rippingtons and the Yellowjackets!!
The song Aja is epic. So are the 9 songs on Two Against Nature. If they've done better, I haven't heard it yet. Great channel.
Chod, Steely Dan's "Aja", "Deacon Blues" and "Josie" are next for you!!!
He didn't finish the Aja album yet?? SLACKING

In an interview they said this song was about a love/ dope triangle.
song about his Heroin addiction. Did you see the very beginning of the video? Looked like you shut your eyes and missed it.
