  • Thousands of people were stuck on the Pennsylvania turnpike during blizzard conditions in Winter Storm Jonas. Turns out this disaster could have been prevented if they had listened to Pennslyvania state meteorologist Jeff Jumper.

One thing that needs to be explained: The Turnpike Authority and Penn-DOT are separate entities, and their failure to communicate with each other is legendary. But somebody had to be watching any of the forecasting services, or the state meteorologist, or even local media in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg or Philadelphia, and know that the storm was going to be a mother. They got lucky that damage was minimal and nobody got killed, something that happens on that road even when it's clear. And drivers ought to check forecasts on their own as well. If I had known those kind of conditions were forecast, I'd have found a room and waited it out. If I could have gotten to a service area, I would have parked it there.

Please do not travel on the PA Turnpike during snow. It was the worst run state as far as snow preparation, warnings and closing the highway. People need to get off the road when there is a blizzard and wait it out until it's cleared. I saw the biggest pile up I've ever seen in my life and NO SNOW Removal trucks on the road or preparation. No warnings to stay off the road and avoid the pile up.

It's okay everybody. The PA Turdpoke Authority is going to ram the rates a bit higher, and everything is going to be alright. Cuz higher rates always mean better everything.

    I was there.
I was stuck on the PA Turnpike for 7 hours. (eastbound, about 3 miles from Bensalem exit).
    It wasn't the snow.
    It was the ice.
    Snow accumulation was not safe.
    But ice was dangerous.
I'd feel the car slipping, every time I drove UNDER an overpass.
Again, it was NOT the snow.
By 10AM, the sun was out and shining.
Snow was melting on the road.
We were all 'parked' on the road.
I was about a mile from the 'rear' of the pileup.
No accidents back there, we were 'parked'.
I walked up to the pileup (7 hours is a long time).
A few cars had crashed in the midst of the 'parking lot'.
I *know* that these few were due to people not paying attention while driving.
But it quickly changed into total carnage.
Casualties had been evacuated by the time I got there.
    Destruction was random.
Some cars (15%) were 100% intact.
    Others were totaled.
Oh....if you own a new BMW...good luck with your airbags.
    They don't deploy.
    I have pictures.
I am a lifelong PA resident.
The PA Turnpike Commission should be named The Department Of Nepotism.
    It is spectacularly corrupt.
That's what happens when you vote for republicans.
And, as we see here, spectacularly incompetent.
Don't believe me? Ask "who got blamed".
The cops cleared the road, starting at the rear of the parking-lot-jam.
Cars did a 180 and headed to the previous exit.
It only took them seven hours.
It was easier for the men who were stuck.
We'd just walk behind a bush to whizz.
We used blankets to build an 'outhouse' for the ladies.
People were walking off the road and up onto an overpass.
They'd walk down that road to a local 7-11 and bought coffee and donuts.
    Best coffee ever.

I have Accuweather on my cell phone and to be totally honest.....it sucks! At 10:00 PM it shows sunny skies, and when the temp is 28 degrees, it will say 48 degrees, or more! All with the compliments of Verizon..........daaa!

This happened to me in the 90's. Left Exton at 11 am (ish) and spent 10+ hours driving east on the PA Turnpike. So many abandoned cars, many people waling in snow and ice, and me driving about 1 mile an hour.

Speed Kills ! Slow Down People ! And Be Smart, Turn Your Lights On When Driving In Snow Or Rain. Drive with your Full Lights On, Not just running lights because they only light up the front of some cars. With full lights on It will turn on all lights in your car including the rear ones, that way people coming up from behind you may see you somewhat better. Just my opinion and Please Buckle Up and don't exit car until safe to do so. I have lived In a snow state for 55 Years so I think my advice could help someone i hope.

Well I didn't know til day of storm that it was to be a huge event. I've just sub to weather channel so I will be informed. Anyone getting paid that kind of money ought to be able to communicate. ITS HIS JOB!! TAXPAYERS PAY TO RIDE THAT ROAD AND THE STATE IS PAYING ACCUWEATHER AND AN EMPLOYEE! This stinks to high heaven!!

You don't have responsibility for millions of motorists each year who drive the roads. The forecast must be accurate and reachable. You can't call a private company (Weather Channel marketing again) and get specific info, etc. You're obviously attacking people here and taking things out of context. In case you don't know, $62,000 a year, for this type job with a lot of responsibility and reporting, isn't much. Again, we see people from a certain political party using fair weather events and attacking sitting targets to promote private companies. Weather Channel provides private forecasting services, which cost a lot of money (even though their forecasters pretty much parrot the NWS data) and they have a history of doing this same thing in other states. Such as in Oklahoma for tornadoes, hurricanes down south and snow/cold in ski areas. They've been after PA a long time since the WC main offices are in that state. Real nasty work, but normal in todays business world, attacking elected people or appointees to promote private business.
