SOLI DEO GLORIA!
This is a comparison video I've wanted to do for a long time! I'd like to do it with some other brands too :)
Enjoy!
Thanks
.
Excellent idea and a very good way of demonstrating that these inexpensive brands are relying upon social media and 5 star reviews to continue selling. Good for us!
Excellent review Darrell,
This is a question that had plagued me for a long time. Nice to see the company is being very honest about what they are selling the public and what they are sending the UA-cam reviewers.
That would be great! Thanks man
I was comparing my daughters Squire 70's vibe with my sons 60's Vibe and have noticed that though the spec for their necks is listed the same (profile and thickness), the 70's vibe neck was a good 16th" thicker which is very noticeable in the hand. So not all comparisons come out this even. That said my daughter loves her 70's vibe and my son loves his 60's vibe so not a bad thing. The 70's vibe did come with a wood chip smashed between the body and neck though, which threw the action off until we chiseled it out. The 60's vibe was spot on in every respect.
Very honest of you to verify this
What do expect hes canadian
Honest Darrel.
I was in charge of quality control and endorsement setups for two big guitar companies.
Every time we sent a guitar to an enfluencer we absolutely did what’s called an “Artist Setup”.
I’ve done these for Steve Vai, Brad Whitford, Adam Levine, and many other artists.
These guitars play incredible when I’m finished.
Includes fret leveling, radiused fret ends, polishing, intonation, action, nut slotting, electronics, and going through every damn screw on the entire guitar.
Even the neck gets removed and screw holes filled and shimmed to perfection for an incredibly tight neck joint.
Everything, and I mean everything is gone through and adjusted with a fine tooth comb.
So, the answer is, yes, you will receive a far better setup depending on the company.
It would be a glaring stupid business decision to NOT do this.
@@swingset1969 Quite so. The *real* question is more about the quality of the components / fit being comparable (or not) imo.
I agree. At least a closer look to find some minor problems they will certainly do when sending a guitar to an youtuber...
In this video I saw an imperfection on the second guitar: the B string is a little off-centered on the nut. The "review" guitar is OK.
@Keith Moreland
So, they take a $600 guitar, give it to a senior guitar tech for a day, and charge $3000 for it? I wouldn't be surprised.
@@JojoJack if you look at 5:57 unless something is weird with the camera that nut is clearly crooked, but as DB said, nothing that's gonna cause any flex - you might have intonation issue on first fret but that's only if you use it lol
You know someone at Donner felt a lump in their throat when they saw this video lol
Not really. If they're producing quality instruments and confident in their consistency then they should be glad to see something like this and the opportunity to show off. They'd only have a lump in their throat if they were cutting corners or had bad consistency. I'm sure they don't need to see the video to understand their own quality control.
@@irishRocker1 eh even if I was doing all the right things I'd still have that lump. What if someone on QC had a bad day and missed something? Did he find something? Hate to find out there's an issue with my production pipeline this way.
@@irishRocker1 I think its about the sticker darrell just put on THEIR guitar
love ur profile pic
I sincerely doubt it. A less favorable review isnt going to hurt them nearly as much as a good review is going to help.
Donner Shipping clerk: Oh Crap, DBG ordered a guitar. Better break out one of the review guitars to send him.
I thought the same thing...
Unless he ordered the other one with another name...
Who knows...
My guess is he got it via amazon not direct so I doubt that happened.
Ok we have an order for Barrel Drawn checks out.
@@nickmartinez8217 lmao
@@TedSchoenling oh no, better break into Amazon and give him a review guitar!
I just realized that if I had started on a professional level guitar, I'd probably never have learned about neck relief or action. Or at least wouldn't understand the mechanics of guitar as well.
lol "professional" level guitars go out of whack too, but if you started on them (and paid for them yourself), you'd probably be hesitant to fix or adjust them yourself without practicing on less expensive stuff first for sure.
Not really. Yes high end guitars are set up better (on average). But necks move with the weather and people have different taste for setups and strings used.
true, you would start to appreciate professional level guitar, only after you use some entry level ones. neck relief stability, tuning stability, fret edges treatment, electronics, etc that really are small stuffs but overall building towards reliability. I still keep an entry level guitar here, still has tuners and wood treatment is meh, compared to Suhr or PRS with excellent wood treatment. Tuning stability is meh. But soundwise and playability is decent cause I've changed electronics, treat the fret edges, but I can't do nothing on wood quality.
I think all guitarists of all abilities owe it to themselves to learn how to do basic maintenance and guitar setup.
Nonsense. All guitars need a set-up, all necks made of wood react to humidity variatons but idiots with a wallet want to believe they can buy things they don't understand by just going for a higher price tag.
After watching an abundance of your videos over the past year or two, I find them entertaining . You come up with a lot of interesting concepts. I would venture to say your a good dude too.
Thanks man!
Seconded.
Thirded.
So after watching your initial review that is actually featured on the Donner website, I ordered the exact same guitar 2 days ago. Today I see this and was thinking "oh crap!" But because of this review, I feel much better thank you for the awesome review and how you go about informing the consumer and newbies like me! Thank you!
this is honestly the best action a guitarist with fame could do, thank you for this man
As the Tech Editor for a few well known Harley back in my day, we held a manufacturer’s feet to the fire and if we found out that we got played oh boy the readers would find out.
That and we insisted on having a product long enough to truly sort it out! So good on ya for the heads up.
4:04 you call that high? I used the low E string of my first acoustic guitar to shoot arrows..
I used mine as a clothes line.
I threw mine and purchased Ibanez s series electric, best thing I ever done, because I would not be playing guitar now!
lmao!
You can always expect honest advice and reputable opinions from Canada 🇨🇦
HAHAHAHA
I lived in Toronto for 5 years. It goes without saying Canadians are super honest with you.
true. after watching a few of his vids i wasn’t sure but then he said he was canadian and i started liking him way more
@@ruthlesscutthroat4030 that's the most morally bankrupt part of Canada too I have no doubt
Sure lol. People are people no matter where they are from. You'll always have honest and dishonest people and it's not exclusive to any particular location.
Phil Mcknight always says he wonders if the review guitars are intentionally sent in better condition than their off-the-shelf counterparts. It's cool to see the two compared directly. Well done, sir
I believe he is the only one who has said something negative about these cheap guitars. I can't remember which one it was.
@@valueofnothing2487 saying crappy cheap guitars are awesome brings a lot of views, that's a fact. that's why so many youtubers are jumping on that bandwagon. cheap crap makes more views than high-end gear most of the times, and creating hype exaggerating how good cheap guitars are brings in views. Darrell is one of the few youtubers not following this sad (and dishonest) trend.
@@DavidRFIT its not dishonest though. Even Phil who is never afraid to call out bad quality says cheap instruments have never been better. It would be dishonest if people claimed they were just as good as their expensive counterparts
@@DavidRFIT A friend of mine bought a cheap used strat from a guy at his job for 100$. I can’t remember the brand of it ( goes to show how cheap it is lol) but he claims it plays like butter loll The guy says it rivals my MIM Fender hss strat...I can’t wait to see it to believe it lol 😂
I believe you will find the difference when a company has poor quality control and the stores don't do the setups on those guitars. Most guitar companies have quality control, but there are years that Gibson didn't have quality control and people were cutting their hands on the frets playing them at certain stores for example.
This was a great review, and good for Donner making good guitars for beginners at a reasonable price. Your comments regarding setup are spot on. I’ve been ordering mine from a well-known online retailer known for setting up the guitars before they shop them out, and it is absolutely a great idea for anyone new to guitar to purchase from a retailer that does quality control and setups. My recommendation is shop around and read about the retailer’s quality control. Lots can happen between factory and warehouse and if the retailer just passes them through that makes you the setup tech. My last guitar arrived at my front door in perfect tune with a perfect setup at the same price it would have been from a retailer just passing it on.
A great review follow up.
This is the golden age of inexpensive gear.
I wish I could have gotten a brand new well made guitar at a dirt cheap price back when I was 17 years old.
I watch probably too many videos but I must say that Darrell Braun Guitar is possible the best review channel out there especially for the new guitar player. I started over 20 years ago and if I would have had a few of these videos, my cheaper guitars would have been setup way better than they were and some of my other beginner gear would have served me better. I recommend your channel to new and seasoned guitar players. Thanks DBG!
this was an amazing idea Darrell! loving all of these honest reviews, think everyone has thought about this at least once!!
Very cool - and I was surprised that they are pretty much identical. GREAT idea and really nice test comparisons by you! THANK YOU, Darrell!
I got to say seeing those yellow Strat type guitars takes me back to when I first started playing. On this crazy long journey that I've had. And went from a Harmony Electric Strat type of guitar. Into many different phases and brands of guitars over the years. One time I had a huge collection of guitars but I found out that I wasn't really playing them. And I was always drawn back to Stratocaster. Then I bought my first fat Strat. After that I sold off all the other guitars I had. Because I found the one guitar that really give me all the times I could ever want. I've had that guitar for 20 years now.. although I'm not in the market for any new guitars anymore. I love watching your show especially when you do all the mods. And when you take the time to teach people how to play different things I love the partial Capo thing you did, thought that was just amazing. so I'm back to playing one guitar I don't have a big guitarra collection anymore. I have two of the same type of guitar when I'm working on one I got the other one to play. But I love watching all the reviews you do on guitars and all the great advice you give. And I love that I just found out that you donate instruments two people that need them. I think one of the greatest things in life. is when he can give the gift of music to someone. I wish everybody could know the joy that music has brought me in my lifetime. keep up the good work Daryl
Well done, Darrell! Very informative, and gives me a reason for optimism on my next purchase.
Great information to know . I've often wondered about this very thing . Glad to see that at least Donner is keeping everything equal !!
The fact that you'd even do this kind of review speaks volumes of your channel, Darrell.
Great video! As a reviewer myself, I can verify that the overwhelming majority of gear we receive is exactly as it comes off the line.
It’s been exactly the same story for my own “artist/endorsement gear”, although I can imagine that’s likely different for the “big fish”.
Either way, great video as ever! Great work shedding light on this often misunderstood subject!
Thank you for the review, I have been very sceptical about this brand of guitar and this video has shown how great of a company they are.😊
Bought one of these packages as a gift. Was surprised how good it was out of the box. New strings did it. A little string height gauge and a chord chart on the headstock hanger tags too. Nice touch. The little amp is also surprising. Great phone speaker too!
This was a great "check up" on the way that Donner approaches their guitars when considering them going out for demos to channels like your. Great idea and good to know how they stack up.
Thanks for the video on this issue - it's something I've wondered about for a while.
Darrell, thank you for this one! I've been curious to see a comp like this as I've heard hosts from other channels wonder about the set up on the review guitars they are sent. even the big companies seem to struggle with consistency at times, so I think this is not only a testament to Donner's QA team, but also to your integrity as I am sure some might be hesitant to put a company on the spot, so to speak.
Glad to see this kind of review. I've often wondered if the guitars sent out for review were "special" ones.
Thanks to you, I just bought my very first electric guitar: the Yamaha Pacifica PAC 112V. I'm thrilled! Your advices were of paramount importance. I've played acoustic and classical guitar all my life. At 67, it's never too late!
Nice job.good looking out...that's something that everyone has probably thought at one point or another.we needed this show.
Great video! I’m glad someone did a comparison like this. Rock on dude!
Like so many others, I've wondered if UA-cams were getting hand picked and better quality gear for review than regular customers. It's nice to see that doesn't appear to be the case with Donner. Good for them in keeping it honest. Both guitars look well made and very consistently manufactured. That is something to be proud of. Good work Donner, and good review Darrell. That was a pleasant surprise. Thanks
Love this Darrell! I’ve always wondered this myself. Keep rocking and stay safe 🇨🇦
Hey, that's real journalism! Thanks Darrell, it's something I've been wondering about for a while.
Awesome! I've wondered this for years. This is the reason why I watch reviews of guitars I already own (just 6 but still).
Interesting... and I, too, have long been curious about company-provided vs purchased instruments, so I was glad to see this video and even more pleased that Donner seems to be an honest company. My only experience with them thus far is a purchase I made a few months ago of the Donner Alpha Acoustic multi-FX pedal as a backup acoustic preamp / effects unit. Much to my surprise, it sounds really good, particularly the preamp part of the pedal.
Nicely done. Good that Donner is so honest and consistent.
Daryl, you're the man. Thanks for looking out for us.
Thanks Darrell! Love your reviews no matter what level of guitar you review!
Thank you, Darrel. Great video that answers the question
I have learned a lot about these guitars from your nice video .Thanks Darrel✌
I had wondered about that too. This was a good video and really cleared up a controversy. I knew you would be honest on this issue.
Thanks Darrell for this great comparison guitar video👍👏
Very nice Darrel. I got my granddaughter a Donner Uke for Xmas last year and she loves it. My son said it stays in tune very good.
Hi. Thanks for doing this comparison, great idea. So glad the paint didn’t come off right at the end! Regards.
Good to see this! Good to see the Donner fared so well too.
Good idea, nice to see the consistency.
Great idea and video. Always enjoy your stuff.
Awesome that you did this comparison Darrell! Nice to know how their QC really is!!👍👍
Brian I thought you only watched my videos! 😄
Richard you busted me!! Lol !! 😁
Bought one of these based on your last review as a base for upgrading, and mine was also pretty solid though I have to do some fret work on it (I also happen to LOVE this specific shade of cream/VW over the kinds used on more expensive guitars because it reminds me of custard, French vanilla and other various desserts). Great video though!
Don't stop with the great idea's, even if it hurts. I always thought economical guitars (well in more modern times) are not only improved from years gone by in regard to quality, materials, consistency, they appear to have kept pricing well in check all without getting the credit they likely deserve. Darrell working hard to undo the stereotypes one guitar at a time. Thank you.
Really good review, Darrell, as usual. Thanks, man.
Well done Darrell, love your stuff
This is really good content, quite useful and very well recorded. Kudos!
Great vid man. Thanks for doing this. Very interesting.
Thanks! I’m convinced the review guitars are one offs. I bought a Firefly FFTH Semi-Hollow that a number of you tubers reviewed as an amazing value for the money. My firefly is junk. I don’t think I’ve ever really been able to tune it, but if I could, rest assured it will go out of tune within seconds... love the channel. Great stuff!
Great idea for a review. Very informative!
Thank you for your post. I am just starting to learn about guitars. I always wanted to learn how to play so I am watching all of your post. I know nothing about music except what sounds great to me. I am determined to learn at my age (70) to learn before I pass this life to play. P,ease keep up your great information I will be constantly watching.
I always questioned this, glad you did it!
Super video idea again, Darrell :)
Thank you for doing this type of review. Left a positive feeling for starting out with a budget guitar. Any chance you can do more reviews of this type? Thanks again…subscribed 👍🏾
Great video and a good insight for potential buyers - thank you
You are a godsend, young fella. I'm a recent senior (65 last Sept.) on a tight budget, and you sold me on this Donner. Now, I'm not even within two counties of your skill level, so even a Player Strat would be wasted on the likes of me anyway, but that doesn't mean I don't get as much joy out of a playable gee-tar as the next man, and this little Donner more than fits the bill for me; the Cutlass and Schecter budgets were just that tad too rich. And I'm happy to report that I received _the very same_ build quality and tone as the two you compared, right down to the humbucker being too hot. That little amp is a bit of a joke, but this guitar sounds just fine recording or through my little Vox amp. You're gold, mate, and a fellow countryman to boot. Cheers and have a great day yourself.
It was very cool to see you with two totally identical guitars! It made me want to buy some doppeltgangers of my favourite guitars in my collection, just because it looks so cool. And for backup... :D That Donner guitar seems like good entry level guitar! I started learning playing blues slide guitar on a Yamaha G55-1 NYLON string guitar, because that was what i had available when 13 years old, maaany years ago. :D Thank God for CNC-machines!
NICE! always great content, this was interesting and a great view. Always like to see the different price range reviews....helps me to recommend to new, interested aspiring artists on a budget.
I always wondered this question. Glad to see a company like Donner nailed it. Though I'm sure theres still some out there that get away with it. Thanks for the video
Great video. Very informative. Thank you, sir
Great idea to do this video... especially since Donner seem to have sent a bunch of their instruments (drums and saxophone too) to youtubers for review so nice to know.
Awesome job, wish more would do this too. Keep up the good work.
I bet Gibson and fender couldn’t pass the test.
Fantastic review! Thanks for posting. 👍
Great vid Darrell. I was always curious if you’re were getting hyped guitars to review. Nice to know that isn’t always the case.
Great idea for a video. I have always wondered if the review guitars were cherry-picked!
Well done. Love your videos. I love new gear day.
These genuinely decent budget guitars are just brilliant for anyone wanting to learn to play guitar, wanting to form bands, etc.
Well done Donner and thanks for the great comparison review Darrell.
Great Idea ! Hope this Catches on With other UA-cam Product Reviewers Across the Chanel !!
Great job brotha
I bought the exact same guitar and it was impressive for the price. I upgraded it with tuners and preloaded EMG pickguard. It plays awesome now.
Great idea for a video. Thanks for this one
Infinite thanks. Every reviewer with substantial subs should do reviews this way.
I like it that you give music gear away, which is is something I do myself at times or to students I get who really need a descent instrument and really show all the enthusiasm and put in the effort to learn to play for the love of music. 👍😎
You mentioned Schecter Guitars. I Love Schecter, but I have had a newer model Omen Elite 6 FR ordered that has been on back order for a few months now. What gets me is that they have other new guitar models ready to go and available while my order is still on back order. Marshall did that same thing about 2 years ago. It's like they had a lot of other gear to unload first, then the year on back order will get manufactured and sent out. Schecter has had two guitar models come out , one in the past and one new model at present, Finish is Green on these guitars. I ain't a Yellow, Orange, Gunmetal, Black much, nor Green. The whole world is Green. I like natural to transparent and metallic finish, and exotic woods. When my Schecter Omen Elite 6 FR does come to me, I will have to get a set of locking tuners, probably high ratio staggered tuners like I put on a few of my other guitars to aid in further tuning stability.
I played a super QC Ovation Elite model acoustic, then I ordered one and it literally exploded on me and all the dealer and Ovation did was blame one another, freight to even myself and Ovation had no parts but I could have it rebuilt. For a price near to it's cost. I had parts made , repaired the guitar and it is better than the original to this day. I had a couple other High End brands electrics do the same thing, play a super demo, get purchased but had to be returned, replaced or refunded even shipping costs got refunded, no problems elsewise, depends on the company or dealer, powers that be ! ! ! 😁
Always GR8T information in your videos D B., Thanks Man ! ! ! Be Safe, Healthy, Prosperous, Peace & Play 🎸 On FretBro . . . 👍😎🎸🤘🙏 DDH 5-9-2021.
Great video mate!
I'm impressed with the repeatable consistency of what is really a decently playable instrument. Your review is spot on!
Well thats probably one of the best questions you could have answered. Glad to know that at least Donner sends out the same stuff they sell.
Ummm if you're ever feeling even more generous I could use one of those.
Great video Darrell, an advice if I may, when checking the weight please also show units in Kgs for your viewers in other places
This is the review I wanted! Been looking at one of these to have a basic strat to go with my squier jim root tele.
Good info. Thanks!
*welcome back to the channel I hope you're having a great day today*
Words I love to hear.
I'm a senior who lacks musical talent of any kind and recently purchased my first guitar -- the Donner electric guitar with full kit for around $150. It has everything to get started: strap, tuner, pics, gig bag, tools, cord, 3 watt portable rechargable battery/usb amp, capo, and a card with chords on one side and a way to check action (I think) on the other. There are quite a few reviews on UA-cam, all positive. I'm not sure if learning past basic level is something I will pursue. If a well-reviewed complete kit for under $200 wasn't available, I would not have even bothered. Donner is opening the world of playing music to many people by making decent instruments and kits available at a budget price. That's a great thing! (I urge parents to get a musical instrument and training on it for their children.) Btw, I got the Lake Blue.
Nice to see an honest review 🤘🏼😈🤘🏼
Thank you for making this effort!
Great video as always, been thinking of getting a Donner. Maybe the 152
Great content!!!! I'd like to see more like this.
Every guitar I have bought from the guitar store is fully checked, perfectly set-up and working predictably in every other key respect by the time I walk out with it through the door. Also with a 12 month warranty. Of course costs a bit more than if I had ordered the same guitar online but of the 5 (all of them "affordable") guitars that I have bought online, NONE has arrived without a problem, ranging from relatively minor ones that I can try to fix myself to quite serious ones necessitating a trip to the guitar tech for a cost which ends up canceling the "savings" of an online purchase! You could of course return it but this can be a torrid experience, especially for international purchase, and you typically always end up anyway out of pocket one way or the other.
This is one of the best info vids ...big like my friend.
Interesting review. As part of your future reviews, I recommend measuring the string height at the first fret using a feeler gage. That will tell you how well the nut was cut. Then play a barred F chord and see if it sounds right. Can compare it to the same 6 notes on a keyboard.
I wanted to get a cheap bass to record with instead of using a keyboard, and I picked up the cheap Donner Bass. Its been 2 years and I am extremely happy with it. It's just been really impressive for me for the price. Eventually I will be upgrading it, but for now its been wonderful! If you want something cheap go to them!!!
Great video as always.
Great review!!
Donner is putting out inexpensive playable guitars and amplifiers. Thanks to youtubers like Darrell and these types of videos, we can make an informed decision on purchases.
