I’m totally the same ways as you, girl! I hear something a first time and I hate the chorus or the main melody, or whatever it is. But then I listen to it again in a different mindset or in a different emotional state and it just hits in a whole new way. I wasn’t a huge fan of the brassy bit in this song at first. But it slowly grew on me and now I love it. And though it didn’t happen initially with this song for some reason, I’m the same way with repetitive sounds or choruses. I usually despise when songs just repeat a single word or small phrase for a chorus, or when the track is just the same few measures over and over with no variation the whole song. It grinds on my nerves. 😂 So you gotta be something amazing with the lyrics or the vocal content to tip the scales back the other way for me to like it. And Hip has both lyrical and vocal content (as per Mamamoo’s usual) so there was pretty much no chance I’d dislike this song in the end. It’s become one of my favorites.
The 1st Universe is Mamamoo as themselves. In the 3 alternate universes they live different lives as women who are unusual in one way or another, the point being that all of those women deserve respect rather than criticism for being out of the norm. I like that they re-define Hip to mean being true to yourself and doing your own thing rather than the usual slang meaning of cool or trendy. Hwasa co-wrote Hip and the lyrics refer to multiple incidents where she was attacked for her choice of what to wear when going to the airport. As I think I mentioned in your first Mamamoo reaction, they have never fit into kpop standards regarding beauty, fashion, gender, sexuality or polite behavior by proper young lady idols and consequently they've always been one of kpop's biggest shit magnets. Up until Hip their label had instructed them not to respond to criticism but once RBW took the gloves off MMM went to war against malicious sm comments. As you may know S Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world and there had been several celebrity suicides in the year or two prior to Hip, with at least one of them linked to sm harassment and hate comments. I think it had become so clear that internet bullying was costing lives that RBW finally let them speak their minds. I think you'll enjoy hearing about how Hwasa dealt with a couple of the controversies around her fashion choices during the time when she was unable to address them directly because of RBW's policy. At Mamamoo's viral appearance at the 2018 MAMA award show Hwasa dressed in a red hot hot-red vinyl number that sent k-netizens into a "Too Sexy!!" frenzy. The volume was so loud RBW felt compelled to release a statement clarifying that the members had chosen their own outfits (their stylists were being blamed) and that the company didn't see a problem with what they wore. Hwasa said nothing but at their next award show performance a few days later she wore black lingerie as if to ask "If you thought the red outfit was too sexy then how do you like this one, bitches?!" One of the airport fashion controversies referred to in HIp's lyrics was over an ensemble that included partially unbuttoned jeans with male style underwear showing but the one that really triggered the haters was when she wore a top that resembled a sports bra. "Where's her shirt?" became the question of the day. The next time she went to the airport a week or so later she wore a shirt but no bra and the internet blew up again. She was asked about it by a reporter and coyly answered "I was just dressing comfortably." That's our girl! Gotta love her but if you think she lives in a permanent IDGAF zone and is impervious because she's hard as a rock that's not the case. I highly recommend checking out her solo songs Maria and LMM (Lost My Mind). Those songs bookend her fantastic 2020 solo album Maria and are very different, very personal and very deep responses to all the hate she receives. Imo they're the most important kpop songs of 2020. Maria was an enormous hit and is hands down the most impactful song released that year. LMM is an introspective ballad that is so gorgeous (with an equally gorgeous MV) it was my personal pick for 2020 SOTY. Hwasa won several female solo artist of the year awards but Maria was ignored in the SOTY and AOTY categories. Instead Maria won the MAMA award for solo dance performance, which is kinda ironic as well as a bit of sweet vindication since at that time Hwasa was considered to be the weakest dancer in a group that can't dance according to the haters. As to their dancing, in performance they prioritize vocals as you might expect and their choreo is usually pretty simple so they can sing well. They don't lip sync and they almost always use hand mics, which further limits their dance moves. They did most of their own choreography up until 2019, at which time I suspect they got tired of hearing that they can't dance and started hiring well-known choreographers and doing more complex dances than they had previously. They used headset mics for the first time while performing Hip and again in 2020 with the single Aya, tho it's worth noting that prior to Hip Solar used a headset mic for her 20 minute solo stage during MMM's epic 4+ hour long 4 Seasons F/W concerts in 2019 so she could dance her ass off while covering BTS's Fire. If you haven't seen vids of that legendary performance you're in for a treat. Here's a link to an almost complete professionally filmed video of the full concert. Go to 2:12:10 for Solar's stage. For some reason they left out her cover of Peggy Lee's Fever, which was the 3rd song in her 5 song set. Btw, the 2nd song is her self-composed ballad Hello. Only Solar would have the brass balls to cover an iconic song like Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On and then follow it up with her own ballad. ua-cam.com/video/Rza2wR70eU8/v-deo.html And speaking of BTS, the groups have always been friendly. Moonbyul & Jin are in a '92 liner chat group. Everyone knows you can't play Blood Sweat & Tears around Solar unless you're prepared for her to morph into Jimin doing the opening dance moves. V is the biggest MMM fanboy in BTS and he doesn't care who knows it. RM always looks like a proud papa whenever he watches MMM perform at award shows. I get a kick out of watching Jungkook at award shows because he tries to play it cool and professional but when MMM comes on he always seems to end up slack jawed and catching flies before long. After BTS's incredible performance at the 2018 MMA award show Mamamoo was one of if not the only group to give them the standing ovation they richly deserved. Before BTS went global the two groups were often compared because they both debuted under tiny agencies with few resources to support them and beat the odds to became successful due to their extreme hard work, world class talent and direct creative involvement in all aspects of their careers. 😂
I see you are reacting to a lot of mamamoo. The live version of this is insane, especially seeing Solar belting while doing the choreo. I suggest Mamamoo Live hits collection from the Hwasa show, This video was done a few months ago, has this song live with a different dance break more latin or with the reggaeton it already is and it is a live band. Plus they do other songs ending with one of the best ballads they do. They sing every genre, more of the Genre is Mamamoo and they happen to sing any type of song. The Jazz and Big band continues, in fact you would probably like Solar's solo album(they all have solos) a song she wrote and composed called Big Booty, very big band. When you see their MVs, early ones like Mr Ambiguous looks like the 1960s, Piano Man could be taken right out of a 1920s or 30s bar. they even have songs that fit in the 70s and 80s as well. Besides what you have heard, they have R&B, some soul, pop, reggae, reggaeton, latin, smatterings of african and indian styles, traditional korean appears and even US Country in the song Destiny, plus some rock. there are over 300 videos you could watch. All of them good.
I think you will really like Egotistic, Aya, Starry night and Wind flower. Also, you will see how diverse their discography and sound is so its not just big bandy or jazzy
hip is a diss track to all haters. mamamoo is sayign that you are cool" or hip" not matter what u do for a living (president with child, protestors, boxer, artist) or whatever you want to dress and you are unique and cool. Women and person empowerment song
I always open my youtube to see if you post another reaction video of mamamoo and finallyyyyyy!!!!! Wow, I really love your reaction, hope to see you more mamamoo content to your channel
Illella literally translates to "something's about to break" with the meaning, I'm going to cause some trouble. I watched a reactor, fluent in both Korean and English say they use the Korean word for gitty-up and insisted the song is about sex. Probably not the kind of sex with scented candles and satin sheets. There are other MMM videos that start with the morning after and then show how the day before got them there. Interesting thing about HIP for me is that I became aware of MMM early 2020 when Hip was blowing up. It was literally everywhere. It's not their biggest vocal flex and I'm well aware that studio production can make average singers sound great. I watched more of them because there were only four and they had different looks so I could tell them apart. At some point, You Tube suggested Delilah, and I knew that song from my youth although not as young as you might think. Their vocals on that song made me realize how amazingly talented they are. I then spent the isolation of the pandemic immersing myself in all things Mamamoo. I think it was Killing Voice when I finally came to enjoy HIP.
for next reactions: Aya, Egotistic, Starry Night if you want ballads: Where are we now, Paint me Fun songs: Um oh Ah yeah, 1cm taller, you're the best jazzy: Mr. ambiguous, Piano man, aah oop
You got me crying! The symbol on the bottom of the screen at the end is their logo. It’s a stylized version of their name, Mamamoo. 😂
Fun fact: Moonbyul and Jin are 92 liners, they are friends 😊
AWWWW NO WAY! I want in on the 92 group chat! I can see them being so silly with each other now.
