  • It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing the Atari corporation, or what's left of them. They've been very oddly active lately, and I wanted to discuss it. Are they planning more beyond the Atari VCS, Atari 2600+? What about a Jaguar Mini of sorts? Who knows!

I will say that the proliferation of 2600 nostalgia stuff generates 2600 nostalgia.
From parents able to share it with their children in a modern form to simple curiosity.
The Flashback 2 was one of my first gaming devices and I therefore have 2600 nostalgia.

Unusually, the Flashback 2 had proper hardware and wasn't an emulation machine. They went with emulation instead for other Flashback iterations.

That's fair, I have fond memories of my dad dusting off his 6-switch 2600 and playing combat with me. That being said, I feel like there's limited retention with seventies and early eighties stuff for folks my age. A lot of us gen Z retro collectors skip straight to the mid nineties, because that's when games got advanced enough to have real depth.

I think the fact that the upcoming atari+ is able to play my old original 2600 and 7800 games makes the console millions times better and more useful than the snes classic mini and Sega mini and pretty much any other classic mini. I agree. Atari went above and beyond even with the Flashback series being able to be converted into a working cartridge reading VCS with instructions supported by Atari themselves. So if they ever do some kind of "Jaguar+" system, I hope we can expect something in the same vein as the 2600+.

Atari is absolutely on fire this year. I got my VCS in early 2022 it was quirky and as time progressed and more content came out it quickly became my favorite console. I heard in podcasts and interviews around the end of 2022 that 2023 would be rather large news coming from Atari and boy they have not disappointed. Keep your eye on Atari they’re on the up and up not quitting anytime soon.

honestly. i think if atari really wants to knock it out of the park they should do what songbird did with towers 2 recently. they had the original developers put out a special revamped edition of the game. i would love to see some original developers come back and release revamped versions of some of the old jaguar games. especially later releases on the jaguar were notably rushed (supercross 3d and fight for life come to mind, but i'm not sure how much value people would get out of revamping those two), and theres tons of cancelled games like black ice white noise they can finally do real wide releases of. i'm not really a fan of mini consoles overall but i might do one of the jaguar because i collect for the system, but i also collect for the system so i don't know how bad i need one. maybe do a jaguar style demake of something like san francisco rush or area 51 so we could pretend we got later atari games on jaguar

There isn't a whole lot stopping Atari from doing such a thing. They've already figured out Jaguar emulation, so releasing a full size unit that can play the original carts plus it includes Atari 50 and an SD card slot would cover all the bases. Atari could nicely sidestep the licensing issues surrounding games like Alien vs Predator. I think they'd sell as many as the new 2600+, if not more. The only weird thing is their partnership with Polymega. Would that somehow get in the way or would it actually be a benefit?

But Wade has done a lot of interesting things at the helm of Atari that a lot of people scoffed at initially but turned out to make the company money.

Get the X68000 CPU which is easy to get, Replicate the main CPU using some kind of Asic or an FPGA chip, add the DC or a USB C port, Genesis 2 9 Pin Din Connector with support for RGB CSync, Jag cart slot, solid polymer capacitors, shell and you got yourself an Atari Jaguar Clone. Would love to see this. Of course it would be sold in limited quantities. But to see more Jags out there would be great. Downside is that it would cost as much as an Atari Jaguar. Were talking 3 to 400 for a clone. But it would be brand new and more reliable since it will use modern parts and almost 1to1 in terms of accuracy to the original system.

IDK what they could do with the Jaguar that would make me want it, all I remember of the system were mostly terrible games (maybe minus stuff like tempest 2000) but I"m at least a little bit interested in the upcoming 2600+! might be fun to revisit some of those games I remember playing on 2600 as I did have a bit of experience with it before moving onto the NES!

I guese Atari did its peak on what they could do with content with the Atari 50 colection.
But, considering the other side of the company with computers - Atari ST particularly because had a larger life and was technically more capable - I think would be nice take a look on the back catalog of these computers and released it on a consolized version - Atari ST has a better recognition and nostalgia on europe than anything else they released after the 2600.
And, I guess, sort of it wold act like the saturn nostalgia nowdays - a lot of people don't have it at time, its expensive and dificult to buy one and still a bit complicated to emulate for a lot of computers - releasing something that makes easier to have a conection with the console games more easily would be a nice move for a niche of sega enthusiasts.
So people that loved the 2600 would necessarily be hungry for a consolized Atari ST? No. But for the brand enthusiasts it would be like "hey, here's a universe I'd never saw before".
I don't know how emulation of the Atari ST works nowdays but if tue 2600+ can do it - sell colections of games on cartridge and, maybe, a controler more akin to the computer games.
I find it more appealing than the overused 2600 craze or jaguar.

Speaking as an EX-520STFM owner myself, there really aren't the stand out ST exclusives, it's library is so weak in this regard.
Rob Zybdel even managed to make a pigs ear out of ST Star Raiders, it's far weaker than the A8 original.

@@thefurthestmanfromhome1148 yeah, Atari ST was never a thing in Brazil and was released looooong before my First experience with a Pc.
For little I Know It was a rival for the Amiga, both 16bit computers, but was not a powerhouse Of games (however has some good titles). But the thing is - still more succesfull than the other consoles Atari Released.
From exclusives to non-exclusives I really believe there's plenty games more complex than 5200/7800 that Atari fans would be pleased to Know.
Some good non exclusives probably now are sort of abandonware considering many comoanies left the industry. Or some homebrews takes the computer specs to New levels ... There's more to life than Just 2600/VCS. I really think It would be appealing for a "testing Waters". I dont Know, a "Atari Computer Colecion" maybe.

I pulled my statement out of thin air admittedly, but I don’t think you can judge anything off UA-cam views, not everyone watches UA-cam. 30 million sales vs 150k, I think you would get more nostalgia sales off a 2600 mini than a Jaguar mini.

I want a Jaguar mini, with either the 6 button controller or one with a spinner for tempest. Of course I'd buy it if it was just chock-full of 64bit games especially the CD games but if you really want to sell the system as a mini console you got to get Aliens vs Predator. I'm just tired of 2600 games and I don't need them on my Atari Jaguar Mini but some Lynx games or Arcade games would be a welcome bonus.

I really like the idea of the new 2600. I bought a 2600 junior but hooking it up to my tv, while it can be done and it works, it is a pain. Not to mention, While the tv does display the game, it really looks terrible.
I don't think id get too excited about a jaguar regardless of what was on it for games.
I dont actually have any real nostalgia for anything atari but after i played the aforementioned 2600 jr, i was really impressed with what the console could do. Seeing it played on YT is just not the same as in person no matter how good the capture.
In fact what Id love to see is nintendo, sony and MS release retro consoles that will play their old physical media games. That may be a bit harder in Nintendo's case but it shouldn't be a terrible prospect for sony and ms.

You always forget that Atari competes with itself. Unknowingly, the 5200 competed with the vcs. The 7800 competed with the XE Game System, which also competed for market share against the ST as it came with and without a keyboard.

All about the games whether I'd buy it or not. Depending on the price it'd be nice if they made a Jag mini-system with the games they had licensed but then make it open enough for the "preservationists" to add additional titles. I don't think Analogue would have their sales figures without a similar business model.

  • @ChristopherTrottier

Not to be that guy, but the original Atari hasn't existed since 1976. That's when Nolan Bushnell sold Atari to Warner Communications. Around 1984, Atari split off into two different companies: Atari Corporation owned by former Commodore boss Jack Tramiel, dedicated to the computer and home console market. Then there was Atari Games which was dedicated to arcade games. That version was later sold to Midway -- and now Warner Bros. Games owns Atari Games since they acquired Midway. As for the computer/console version of Atari, it's more like they merged with JTS, sold the brand to Hasbro, who sold the brand to Infogrames, who created three companies named Atari -- with all of them going bankrupt, and still somehow surviving.

The sad thing is there are only three main options of accessibility and none of them are feasible, making the Jaguar platform literally untouchable:
    ● Atari could make a Jaguar mini, but there is no suitable demographic in the marketplace that shows interest.
●You could emulate the games, but they are notoriously difficult to emulate (unless using whatever Digital Eclipse used).
●You could buy a system, but they are insanely expensive.
    ...so now what?

Well i do own the atari flashback and am fine with that,BUT it would be really cool if there will be an atari jaguar mini with games such as doon, rayman, alien vs predator,wolf3D,xheckered fleg, cybermorph, battle morph, kasumi ninja fighters, skyhammer, dragon’s lairs, space of ace;battlezone 2000,tempest 2000,ptfall mayan adventure, missile command 3D,blue lightning, bubsy adventures, zoo ||etc,,,
And whether it will require licensies or not,i don’t care,i am sure that all these games and more could attract people to wanna buy it,
By the way with these games atari tried hard to compeat agaibst mario & sonic games, sports games, fmv games, fps games etc,,
They also tried to push the hardware to it’s limit, they not only tried to compeat against sega & nintendo but later on also on sony and 3DO etc,,,
So it’s no wonder that atari did faced difficuilties at the end with their jaguar system.
