I‘m an engineer and developing something that is more precise AND costs less is the holy grail of engineering.
If you are an engineer, you must be able to understand the difference between powering a movement with battery using 20 parts vs powering a movement with kinetic energy using 200-300 parts. Moreover you can use an assembly line to create quartz movements. In order to create a good mechanical movement you need experienced watch makers to regulate the movement. Ofcourse as an engineer you understand these things better than the rest of us ;)
@@beafftekiya so what's the point if it's simpler in design and cheaper and requires less maintenance
@@pl7zma Some people appreciate the effort and the skill of watchmakers as well as the complexity and the level of detail that mechanical watches have. If you ask me, taking a lifeless object and shaking it in order to activate a series of gears and springs that work perfectly in order to keep time within a +/- 2 seconds per day, is a little miracle of mechanics. That is the point, whether you get it or not. They are not made for efficiency, rather for exhibiting the skill and artistry of watchmaking
My dad is an electrical engineer, and I'm an Electronics technician and future automation engineer. For people like us a quartz watch is way more interesting, and a great feat of science
The electrical impulses that run a quartz watch are virtually the same principles of a heart beating, or neurons firing in your cognitive system. That's fascinating to me
My point is simply that people value different things, and watch collectors love feeling superior and snobbish against quartz

@polong99 Yeah cause the other one's especially peasants don't matter to them
Logically there is no reason to buy anything else than quartz. People rarely only think logically though.
Logically there is no reason to eat food that tastes good or watch tv or anything its just fun
Logically there is no reason to buy quartz when most of them use disposable batteries and cheap materials that will cause significant contamination when multiplied by millions of users. Logically, there is no reason to buy a watch because smartphones can do their job and way more than that.
But if any, buy a solar-powered or a mechanical, since the former will only need minimal replacements after a bunch of years and the latter will never contaminate with disposable batteries.
I have 6 btw hahahaha.
logically there is no reason to buy quartz when you can look at the time on your phone
I buy radio controlled atomic watches. They correct themselves every day by receiving a radio signal.
I buy watches because I like the design and the materials in some cases (precious metal).
There’s no need for me to buy a mechanical watch because it’s objectively inferior in every way to a quartz. Only emotions will make you think/say otherwise.
I wouldn’t even mind to buy mechanical watches if the design I want only comes in mechanical like the Santos de Cartier. But I am still holding off purely because they don’t have a quartz variant. The main reason for this is because when you buy a mechanical watch, every few years you have to spend £500 or more depending on the brand JUST TO SERVICE IT. You also have to be without your watch for weeks and months sometimes. Imagine spending 1000s just to spends more thousands because it’s internals are stuck in the 1700s 😂
When I can go get a quick battery change within minutes and be on my way.
Compared to quartz, they are not accurate: a snob will say well I don’t want it to tell the time. Ok why buy a COSC certified then? Why worry about a chrono? Why worry about +/- accuracy ? Why worry about if the damn thing even works!? Just buy something with no internals. It can’t withstand gravity or magnetism. You can’t leave it alone for more than a week. You have buy a box that spins the watch if you don’t wear it.
Like seriously, WTF is wrong with everyone? This is absurd 😅
Why don’t you all sail in ships from the 1700s instead of flying in a JET!?
Why don’t you use horses instead of a car?
😂😂😂 I am done.
I have a mechanical dive watch for the same reason some people ride horses: it's fun lol
Spot on. I went from only owning mechanical watches to only owning quartz watches, Cartier Tank, Grand Seiko 9F etc. they’re a marvel of engineering
Quartz watches can also be there to “make memories”. Implying that quartz watches can only be disposable is silly.
I have a Nautica chronograph in titanium, which is very rugged yet somewhat classy for its size. I inherited it from my father.
My mother gave me a watch to commemorate something this year: a stainless steel Bulova Precisionist chronograph with 1/10th, 1/100th, and 1/1000th second sub-dials. It runs off a high-performance quartz movement which higher frequency allows the second hand to sweep like a mechanical hand instead of tick like a regular quartz.
Mechanical watches are neat, but quartz has its place and is arguably just better in some ways.
True, there are alot of fine quartz movements like Citizen's Chronomasters, Grand Seiko's 9Fs, and Bulova's Precisionists.
Arguably better? No, quartz watches are just better and it’s fact. Significantly more accurate, cheaper in maintenance, requiring less attention (they don’t require constant time adjustment and they don’t stop when you put them off for two days).
People do buy watches to tell time (otherwise, they'd just buy a bracelet), and quartz watches are certainly not disposable. Ever since I can remember, my father wore a Citizen Eco-Drive Chronograph. Now it sits on my wrist. It's been worn almost every day for 20 years and still runs perfectly without a single service. It has an impressive number of functions, looks great, and I couldn't understate its personal importance.
Sure, watches are bought to mark special occasions, but without the affordability of quartz watches, that wouldn't be possible for most people.
A mechanical watch will satisfy a traditionalist and romantic person. A quartz watch will satisfy an innovator and expiditious person. A horologist will never be satisfied.
Quartz haven't been long enough but the ones from the 1980s are still running if you have a fresh battery in it. It just might last as long as a mechanical watch
Absolutely! I’m actually currently
wearing a Seiko Quartz 812A from 1987 which is still going strong!
I think theres a big hypocrisy with Seiko. They tried to market quartz watches as the best watches in the world (at least in the 70s) but now most of their repertoire consists of mechanical watches, which is so weird, because the thing they wanted to „destroy“ got up to them.
Don’t take this too seriously, I own a Seiko too haha

From a technical standpoint, quartz are light-years ahead from mechanical watches. Far more accurate, it tells you the time, relatively cheaper, and it's also a product of genius engineering (with the transistors and all the small components of a quartz watch).
And it's also true that most people who own a mechanical watch are pretentious. With that being said, I am one of those pretentious mechanical watch owners. I wear it not because it's practical, but because it looks beautiful and it functions like a jewelry.
Yeah, but nobody can see from the outside that it is a mechanical watch. Even with a clear back case, you still have to take it off to see it.
Only if the front is see through, but almost all watches are not.
@@SRADracer yes. That's why most mechanical watch thumpers are pretentious; they're the only person who'll know that what they're wearing is a mechanical watch and yet most of them feel superior.

Nobody has really “owned” a Rolex until that first $1200 service bill comes in the mail💸
I don’t even want to know what a perpetual calendar or other grand complication from one of the holy trinity must cost. Gotta be a car down payment 😭
I used to think the same way, had an entirely mechanical collection with Orient, Seiko, Vostok, & Ball and love them all to bits, still do!
But when I bought a quartz watch on impulse and started using it, it made me realize how hard it was to beat the grab-and-go nature of quartz. I can swap between my quartz Timex, Bulova, and Credor whenever I want in the morning, whereas my mechanical watches will need to be re-wound, will need the time to be reset, and even the date needs to be setup too.
Made me realize that the story, heritage, and specialness of mechanical watches doesn't mean much if I end up not wearing them most of the time. Plus gatekeeping myself to only buy mechanical deprives me of a lot of beautiful quartz watches. I wont stop buying mechanical, but I won't limit myself from buying quartz anymore either. Enjoying both gives you more watches to enjoy!
Imperial Japan will not be silent.....even though it uses spring drive
Grand Seiko makes regular mechanical movements as well. Spring drive is insane though.
I prefer both kinds. They each have benefits. Mechanicals are fun in knowing how complex they are and watching the steady sweep.
Some say that is just how a watch makes you feel. I love both quartz and mechanical watches. Cheapy cheap, to elite high end. There are many levels to enjoy and wear on your wrist. Don’t let others peoples opinions dictate your enjoyment of the hobby.
Why do people buy fancy race cars and off-road vehicles when you can simply take the bus 😂
I think the luxury watch brands are mostly overpriced...
"people don't buy watches to tell the time" 🤔😑🤕🤒 uhhhmmm. Maybe this is the reason why some people got burned with watches
I mean, I love mechanical watches but the maintenance sounds like a nightmare, they’re already so expensive and getting them repaired sounds so expensive.
I think that watch people overthink this a little bit. And i think citizen is sort of proof of this. They’re not luxury but they’re very popular-especially among women shopping for their men partners for some reason lol
If my grandpa would ever see me in a quartz movement, he said he would disowned me
I equate this to us watch nerds that when you look at your watch, and someone asks what time it was, and you respond with, "Oh, I wasn't actually looking at the time. I was looking at my watch."
Quartz is too simple for my taste.

Some people spend a fortune on mechanical watches because they get duped by manufacturers. A quarts watch is leagues ahead in terms of accuracy, reliability, and doesn't require servicing.
The last bit is not true at all. I have my dads casiotron he bought as a teen on 1974. Still running like a charm, more accurate than ang chronometer certified watch 😅

A lada has four wheels , an engine and it makes you go from A to B with few litres of gas. Why buying a ferrari ? It does the same, cheaper. Every smartass here comparing mechanical watches with quartz watches
Automatic movement is ART of CRAFTMANSHIP
I prefer mechanical because of the interaction with something engineered. All those little parts interlaced together into a tiny spring driven engine just *feels* superior. The trade off of a slight lack of accuracy is very much worth it.
I'd rather have endeering foibles than perfection.
All about appreciation of the movement. If you dont get that, you wont get it, so buy a quartz.
We went from buying utility gadgets to buying jewellery
To me, its like comparing a poster to a painting. One is art and required special talent, time, and materials. The other is just a representation of the former. Its cheap, mass produced, non-art.
Quartz watches are less desirable for watch enthusiasts, but the masses outside of our little circle of nerds, many still appreciate and buy quartz watches because they don't have to think about servicing. That's why big brands like Patek still produce Quartz watches.
Why not both? 😁

Apparently no real watch enthusiasts in the comment section.. It is just such an honor to live in a modern era but to be able to witness the real craftsmanship that goes through to make mechanical watches telling time, days, dates, weeks, months and even moon phases.. with just a springdrive, a twist of the wrist or the crown.. and the heart of your watch takes care of your time.. isn't it nice to get a glimpse of the movement through the open caseback.. it is a dying profession, but we still keep it alive because we have passion and respect for it. We still can wear handmade leather shoes, but most people wear sneakers. Why do we still appreciate architecture from the past, or paintings, artifacts.. we will even more appreciate a mechanical engine once it isn't made anymore..
I dont see the huge deal here. Both are cool lol. Mechanical watches keep great time too. I love both my Mechanical and my quartz. Most modern-day Mechanicals are less than or equal to a 2 second gain or loss per DAY lol. People need to chill out and enjoy what they are trying to enjoy.

That’s why I prefer solar watches…
If I ever have the money for a expensive one I’ll buy a Grönefeld.
I like the evolution of always striving to get most accurate time. We went from sun dials, waterclocks and hourglasses to solar quartz watches that can sync up to radio atomic time that vibrates cesium atoms! Incredible!

Quartz watches can still be sentimental, not everyone can afford mechanical.
“People buy watch to tell stories”❤
I only buy quartz watches, but automatic / mechanical watch is... art, the way how it ticks behind the face is like you're seeing a car's engine working
People dont buy watches to tell stories or to commemorate events, they buy them as jewelry. Simple as that. Mechanical watches are more popular because they look fancier, especially the automatic ones. They are also more expensive, which adds to the jewel factor.
As an introvert i just really hated going back to the watch shop just to replace a battery.
So my motivation to get a Seiko presage that is an automatic is just so i don't have to go to the store anymore. Cause they where really awkward..

I have 2 mechanical Orient watches, 4 digital casios, 1 quartz analog invicta, 1 quartz analog Casio and 2 smart Samsungs, but my favorites definitely are the mechanical Orients, maybe they are not as expensive as a Rolex but every time I wear one of them, I feel like I'm wearing a piece of art, something that goes beyond from a simple tool to know the time... Mechanical watches are very special, they produce sensations than no other watch (quartz and even less an smart) can make you feel
Casio is hard to beat for a functional watch, but that doesn't take away from a mechanical watch I'd agree...
I own many mechanical watches, and none of them I use specifically for checking time except while driving the car. 😅
I am used to looking at my wrist to see what time it is. I want the time displayed to be within a few seconds of what my cellphone gets from the phone network.
Most quartz watches can’t even do that. I own a couple of radio-sync watches, one that gets time from GPS satellites, and a +-10 seconds per year thermocompensated quartz watch with an ETA PreciDrive movement.
None of these cost me over US$300 and most considerably less.
Andy Warhol collected watches. He rarely wore them except maybe his Cartier Tank. He didn’t wind that.

It is a very great shame to see anyone speak well of any mechanical watch made since the invention of quartz (and solar and radio controlled...) The primary purpose of a watch is to tell the time. A mechanical or automatic movement that stops a couple of days after being wound cannot be regarded as progress, irrespective of the watch brand. The Swiss watch making industry decision to go backwards a recreate mechanical and automatic movements, in order to preserve the value of their brands is disappointing and shows a crass attitude to their customers.
What the hell are you talking about man? People want to buy them, Swiss choose to produce them. I really don't get your angle here. Are you suggesting that no one should produce mechanical watches, because quartz technology was invented?
@beaffteki Not quite as far as that, lol. Spend your money as you want. There will be someone to take it from you. The issue is, what is the purpose of a watch (or clock, etc) and what is a sensible price to pay. The Swiss watchmaking industry appears to have lost sight of those two points, at the expense of the customer. Think about it, the next time you buy something in Tesco/Walmart/Costco...
@@nevillewhite5469 The swiss watchmaking industry is making money. A lot of money, business is actually booming, so whatever it is they are doing, it is the right thing to do business wise. A 200 $ watch might seem high end for a worker in a poor country but is considered junk in a rich country. You are confusing your reality with what really happens in the rest of the world.

Either type can tell a story! I do like that mechanical doesn't need batteries or charging, though, but quartz if it's going to have complications, for less maintenance.
I buy mostly mechanical because I like the intricacies of a mechanical movement. That being said I’m also a dial guy. So one of my watches is a Citizen eco drive because the look and dial of the watch draws me to it as much as my other ones.
Or buy a GS spring drive and get the best both worlds
