    I love that there are so many cycle lanes there. There's some here, and I get really annoyed when people walk in them and make no effort to move out of the way as you approach them. You know they'd be annoyed if you cycle in the walk lane.

      To be fair, it's easy to stray into the bike lanes here, beer there's no real kerb line between the footway and cycle lane. This video was more of a reply to the "why do cyclists use the road when there's a perfectly good cycle lane" question often asked by drivers.

    Lol. Unfortunately pedestrians don't have to read the Highway Code. How many of them are going to be killed when only electric cars are allowed?

      They will make electric vehicles generate some sort of noise, so people hear them, at a guess. I know this has been discussed in the past, not sure if any currently do or if there are plans to introduce.

      You are right they don't have to read it but they should considering the first section is for pedestrians.

    I don't mind cars parked in the bike lanes AS LONG AS drivers don't scream at me for not using the bike lanes. For the most part, where I live, drivers are quite courteous to cyclists.

      I don't mind in some instances, what I do mind is having to weave in and out between a cycle lane and a lane of traffic. Generally I'll just stick to the traffic lane, and suffer the inevitable abuse that comes with it...

    Might be worth having a word with your local council & asking who cycle lanes are for, where I live we have been told they are not for cyclists but for those not confident with using the road & vulnerable people.

      Sadly all of these are definitely cycle lanes. Edinburgh council just doesn't enforce the parking restrictions, and pedestrians seem to always stray into the split use ones.

    You should consider using a whistle or attaching an airhorn to your bicycle. Maybe you could clear bike lanes when necessary, as it would make most pedestrians look around when bike bell makes no effect.

      There was a video I saw a year or so ago where people did this in Germany (I think) as part of some cycle safety campaign - bikes just dumped in the road (on a kickstand, so they were upright) with a note saying "Just getting a coffee, back in 5 minutes". I'm failng at finding it now, though...

      I’ve never cycled in Edinburgh, but it looks a lot busier than Glasgow. I think cyclists have the same problem wherever you are. Drivers don’t seem to give a stuff about you and just want to get past a quick as possible.

      Car parking is frequently just ignorance, not that it’s an excuse. I don’t complain much about delivery people because they will block roads as well, so it’s not discrimination against cyclists, haha. But seriously, delivering stuff and moving furniture is something that just has to be done, and conditions can be tough for those guys. If it takes me 2 seconds to swerve around a moving-van, that’s fine. I think of the poor bastards lugging someone else’s fridge, and consider myself blessed to be cycling past that hell.

  • @colinfraser369

    The van is not parked it is clearly being loaded/unloaded, what would you have them do? block one whole side of the road in this already congested area with all the disruption and delay this would cause likely to you too as the queue runs back past the crossing you just used. Or do as they did leaving room for pedestrians on the left and cyclists on the right to pass with care causing minimal delay to anyone.
    This is a city environment there are going to obstructions for everyone on every journey be they cars, bikes, or pedestrians we must all just cooperate and our best to keep everybody moving as smoothly as possible, as I believe this van driver did.

    • @FuckOffYoutubeHandles
      @FuckOffYoutubeHandles  6 років тому +6

      The hire van? I'd prefer that they parked on the road where it's legal instead of illegally driving on the pavement and one of the small sections of segregated cycle path in Edinburgh.
      Still, it wasn't a big deal, just yet another example of someone thinking it's fine to obstruct the pavement and/or cycle lane instead of the road.

    • @colinfraser369
      @colinfraser369 6 років тому +5

      Legal maybe but sensible probably not, more disruptive certainly.
      It is sometimes necessary for works vehicles or in this case what looks like a removal van to park in a strictly speaking illegal position to facilitate the job they are doing. The key is to pick the position that causes the least disruption to the least amount of people as they did in this case and make other road users and pedestrians aware as far as possible of the hazard by having warning lights flashing as they were.
      If the van parked on the road causing a tail back some other you tubing fanatic with a dash cam would likely post a clip complaining about that!
      If as you say it's no big deal why bother using it in the video? save your time and energy for things that actually cause a problem, this sort of complaining about nothing only serves to help some drivers and others justify their poor view of cyclists in my opinion.

    Looks like a nice route, shame about the dopey pedestrians and drivers. You might want to think about getting a bluetooth speaker for your bike, I play music through mine and it really helps alert people better than a bell. They hear it, turn around and then move out of my way....and they also no longer step off the pavement into the road just because they couldn't hear any cars so assumed the road was clear.

    • @FuckOffYoutubeHandles

      Funny you should mention that, I go everywhere with a Bluetooth speaker these days - see any of my more recent videos and you'll probably hear it in the background. I don't play it loud enough to be audible at a distance though, and I generally just say "Excuse me" if someone is blocking the path and I want to pass - though I'll usually just wait behind for a few seconds to see if they move over.

      I don't either, the point in this video was meant to be a reply to drivers who complain about cyclists using the road when there's "perfectly good cycle lanes" nearby - what I read trying to show is that even split paths - where it's meant to be cyclists on one side and pedestrians on the other - have pedestrians wandering around, it's not somewhere you can (or should) cycle quickly.

    Why are you shouting "bike lane" at the pedestrians as you go through the park? They have every right to be there. There's no sign prohibiting them (red circle with a stick figure crossed out). The rule is pedestrians can go anywhere except places that are explicitly prohibited either by sign or designation (eg motorway). All the signage in your clip merely means that's cyclists can use that bit of pavement - not that everyone else cannot). You must giveaway to pedestrians or give them a wide berth. Hollering at them to get off "your" path is way out of order.

    • @FuckOffYoutubeHandles
      @FuckOffYoutubeHandles  2 роки тому +1

      It's the only part of the park I'm allowed to cycle on, and while pedestrians can walk there, they shouldn't. If they were walking down the road, do you think no drivers would use their horn?
      I'm simply telling them it's a bike lane, in not hollering at them to get off "my" path 😂

    • @dougturner7576
      @dougturner7576 2 роки тому

      @@FuckOffUA-camHandles the difference is that pedestrians are not entitled to walk down a roadway (unless there's no pavement), and even then drivers may not harangue them. They should slow down and give them a wide berth - checkout the hierarchy of road users in the highway code. The point is that that is precisely what you should do here. Having watched your clip again you're not just alerting them to your presence (your bell did that) - you're telling them it's a cycle lane, which is frankly irrelevant. They have as much right to be there as you do. Would you shout at a cyclist who was in your way and cycling at walking pace?

    • @FuckOffYoutubeHandles

      @@dougturner7576 Pedestrians have as much right to walk in the road as they do the cycle lane. I was letting them know it's a cycle lane because plenty of other folk would just zoom past or shout at them to get out the way or something. I legally can't pass them on the section to the left of the white line, so have to stay in this section of the path.
      If a cyclist was in front of me somewhere they're meant to be, going slower than me, I'd overtake them? I don't see why it's relevant.
