- Crank up the volume, sit down and relax and revisit Super Metroid with me! This is my love letter to my favorite game of all time.
A huge thank you to the composers of this fantastic music, Kenji Yamamoto and Minako Hamano, and to the whole Super Metroid team. Also a big thanks to my guru and mentor Kristofer Eng and to my best friend and girlfriend Johanna for your patience and proofreading.
This started out as me just wanting to have fun with one or two of the songs from Super Metroid and then uploading them to the Facebook group called Metroid Sweden (the best community on the internet!) but the ideas just kept coming and all of a sudden I had a medley of five songs. It later turned into seven songs, then eight songs, then nine and at that point it just felt weird not to do all of them (with a few exceptions). I know that I skipped the haunted wrecked ship and to be honest I forgot that there were some tunes there in ambience until I recorded the footage for this video, and I probably missed a few other things as well.
Even though Super Metroid is an open game where you can explore things in your own way it still has a somewhat natural progression of all the areas you visit, so the order of the songs kind of try to stick with that. I do jump a bit back and forth in the beginning though because I felt that the perfect start to this medley would be the arrival on Crateria music since I heard this kind of overture-sounding-arrangement in my head for it.
When arranging this amazing music by Kenji Yamamoto and Minako Hamano I just went to myself and made the music that I wanted to listen to, so it’s been a joy from beginning to end. Sometimes I wanted to stay close to the original arrangements but other times I wanted to explore some different harmonies and sounds for these tunes. Even though this has been a very egocentric project I hope that others will get some enjoyment out of it as well.
For the sounds and instruments I just went along with what I heard in my head and it was very much like hi-fi versions of the original songs, a mixture of synthesizers and an orchestra. During this production I have been really into 80’s synthesizers and drum machines so I really wanted to incorporate that into the music. I used a varied setup with instruments and sounds from different suppliers of digital instruments and I tried to make things as realistic as I possibly could, with the exception of the choirs that I manipulated since that synthetic voice is a key element in almost any Metroid soundtrack. The choirs are from Orchestral Tools, the Metropolis Ark 1 and Berlin Orchestra Inspire 2 libraries, and sound very natural and realistic but in some places I have pitched them a bit so they are unnaturally high and digitally processed.

This also turned into a project where I discovered DaVinci Resolve and I totally love the software so I kept adding things to it just because it was so fun to work with. So, the original idea to just have some gameplay rolling while the music played turned into a bit more than what I planned.
Thank you so much for your time and I hope you have a good time listening to this music.

Dude this is wicked cool!
Fantastic work! Seriously good stuff - makes me want to play the game again!
This is incredible! A great celebration to this awesome game! If this was for a movie, this would be perfect for the medley of all the tracks that play in the end credits! Good Work!
Billy sent me. Good Lord you are talented.
ONLY 165 VIEWS????
I appreciate all 165 of them. :)
Damn. Didn’t get the good ending! Lol
Haha! I fun part of this project was recording a playthrough of it, and I really took my time! But hey, I saved the animals and blew up the planet, so sounds like a win to me! :D
Thank you for listening! :)
