7 EXPERT CLEANING TIPS YOU NEED TO BE USING: ua-cam.com/video/-C-ic2H24OU/v-deo.html
Foster kids always need luggage. They sometimes move from home to home with their personal belongings in a garbage bag. I suggest everyone with extra luggage donate it to an agency that works with foster youth.
This is such an undervalued contribution to the conversation, thank you Carol!! You are absolutely correct.
BACK PACKS TOO.
Truth! Thank you.
I agree. I always feel bad because they use bags and the bags aren't even sturdy and tear.
I heard a great suggestion recently for older suitcases. When social services removes a child from a home, they often just pack their things in plastic bags. It was suggested that social services might take donations of suitcases so a child could walk into a house with dignity.
What a great idea, thx for sharing. How good is that to repurpose something not needed for one person and would bd so helpful to another.
Great idea. My daughter and her husband are fostering twins. They had nothing. No clothes except on their bodies. I can see the need for comfort things while they acclimate in their new environment.
Also, womens/mens shelters would probably need them too. That is such a lovely suggestion Susan !
My local radio station sponsors a “bears and bags” event for foster kids where you can donate new toys and bag (backpacks, purses & suitcases). Local shelters will also take used toys and bags (also appreciate feminine supplies).
😪🙏💛
I take the mini lotions, shampoos, body washes and put them in a “Homeless goodie bag “ with $1, snacks, and reading material.-Diana
That's what a lot of us do in my State. If they are standing on a corner wanting money then we'll do the same and sometimes are able to give enough change for a laundromat and we provide a little boxe of laundry detergent.
We pick up food from a fast food place and will bring it too them too.
I love that idea
wtf is 1$ going to do no offense lol
Looking around my home today I’ve come to the conclusion the biggest mess is my husband. I’m making a sign “ free to a good home” and taking him to the curb. Thank you for giving me motivation 😉
Lol Kim.
I find the the tea towels that are stained and beat up are that way because I like using them the most. They are broken in, usually feel nicer and often work just as well if not better than the newer ones I have. Well-loved.
You are THE most awesome person on UA-cam! This video JUST allowed me (spiritually anyway) to "let go" of so much of my stuff! I just moved (am aging) into ONE ROOM and have had to get rid of most of my home, tiny though it was. God Bless you, you sweet wonderful person!!!!! Your advice helped me so much. I can be happy now
The thing I like about decluttering - I always find a few things that I forgot I owned and can put to great practical use right now.
I always cut my hair ties before throwing them out. I've seen pics of animals getting them wrapped around themselves.
Replace your hair ties with the soft stretchy ones that look like they're made of tights material. They last pretty much forever. They never break and when they do get stretched out, you can put them in the washing machine with a regular load of laundry and they'll shrink back to normal in the dryer. I've had the same hair ties for a couple years now. I've only had to replace ones that my cat stole to play with and they disappeared under some random piece of furniture lol.
I read that about those plastic 6 pack thingies.
I never thought of that, thanks Kristi!
Mine usually break before I can
I always, without fail, cut my 6 pack plastic soda or water packaging 14 times before tossing them, and have taught my grandsons to do the same thing. I explained how birds and other wildlife could get caught in them. Another danger is plastic grocery bags and cats. My cat loves plastic, but he always gets caught in the handle of the bag, he panics and the bag get twisted around his neck. I know someone who’s dog actually did that within 5 mins of finding the bag, unfortunately he didn’t make it out. 😢. I didn’t know about the hair ties, but plastic bags do need to be tossed or stored properly away from animals & kids too.
You can donate old towels, sheets, blankets to animal shelters and vet clinics. Just call them first to make sure they need them.
Shannon Meridian Shelters and Good Will aren't accepting towels and clothing because of Corona Virus.
Some animal shelters and veterinary hospitals will also welcome new or very gently used and cleaned stuffed animals for pets who have to stay overnight.
Yup this is what I do
Vets and shelters do still accept towels, sheets, blankets here in Houston Tx. I'd rather give to them to actually use then throw them in the landfill.
Wonderful idea... I have done that 🐈 it’s so sad to see them laying on concrete floors.
I actually do take the hotel toiletry products on most of my hotel stay travels. But not for me to use. I keep them in one of those hotel laundry bags in a corner of a closet at home. When I’ve collected enough toiletries from enough trips to fill that bag, I take it to a homeless shelter along with any clothing I decide to donate at the time.
Great idea and very thoughtful.
Great idea! You can also make ziplock care packages to give to a homeless person on the street.
I finally had to stop taking that stuff home, it was hard, but I can do it now. I love the idea of someone donating them... it just can’t be me.
Yes, I bring home the toiletries from Hotels. I have a designated plastic bag to store them in, until it's full. I then donate the entire bag(s) to the Veterans clinic.
Declutter your craft supplies she says. Give them to a teacher she says.
I am a teacher and girl I still need to declutter my craft supplies 😅
Do a big swap with other teachers.
Two things:
1. This absolutely made me want to start getting rid of the crap in my house, starting tomorrow.
2. "Oh, I'm gonna clutch my pearls!" absolutely cracked me up. Thank you so much, lol.
LB me to:)
Contact lens cases work great for taking just a dab of foundation or skin care on an overnight trip. It's amazing how this lightens your luggage and makes it possible to take a really small makeup bag. A dab of cleanser in one, moisturizer in another, foundation in another....
Those broken Pyrex lids can be replaced for free if you contact them through their website. You have to send them a picture of the broken/cracked lid though, so don't recycle it until after you send the pic.
Extra reusable grocery bags make good organizers for a chest freezer. You can load them up with all one type of food (like frozen veggies or a certain type of meat) and they stack easily. Plus, they're easily washable in your washing machine if anything spills on them. When you need something from the freezer, just pull out the entire bag instead of standing there digging and letting heat and moisture in (which is how frost builds up inside the freezer and nobody likes defrosting!).
Oh I love this!! Brilliant idea!!
I cut up my old towels and use them as cleaning rags and then throw them away when they are old and raggedy. It savess on paper towel purchases.
Me too. We are an anti-paper towel house and this is how we remain that way.
For the extra reusable bags, I use them when I donate stuff that way they can keep the bag too. Or I donate them to homeless or women's shelters because they can give them out to their clients who need something to carry their possessions in... better than a plastic garbage bag!
We use ours to transport our dry goods and fridge items during moving. I keep a bag of reusable bags just for this purpose
I use contact lens cases for storing various liquids while traveling. They take up less space than the typical bottles and there are a lot of products I don't need a full 3 oz of on a trip. So I will put sunscreen, foundation, primer, hair serum, face serums, and so on in them. Several contact cases will take up maybe as much space as 1 regular sized travel-sized bottle.
YES I learned that here as well! And Dish soap spray! Love Melissa!!!
That's not enough space for even one application of sunscreen for me. Apply liberally!
i do this too! I love it!!
Absolutely! I buy these cases specially for cosmetics i want to have in my handbag all the time for those 'just incase I need a touch up" moments, great for clutch size bags too!
@@staceygriego4108 what is dish soap spray? I'm new here 👉🏻👈🏻
I turn old cotton t-shirts into hair towels. I know there are microfiber turbans but I prefer cotton t-shirts. I tie one around my head after the shower & it absorbs almost all the water. Thanks Melissa! Great input
Love that idea! Do you cut the shirt in a certain way?
@@cali.songbird I don't. I fold the whole shirt in a triangle. I use the ends to tie the shirt around my head. It makes a cute messy bow on top.
I will cut old t-shirts and use to dry hair or make rags of. I never have learned how to get the microfiber turban to work right for my hair. I give up on them!!
I use them for cleaning our vehicles, and mechanic work in the garage. Might as well get one last use before using up paper towels etc.
Screw top contact lens cases make a great travel case for small or stud earrings. You can also carry meds when you don’t want to carry the whole bottle.
It's also useful for some moisturizer, foundation, spf, etc to pop into your bag if you'll need to reapply while you're out
And as a travel pill box
Closet hint. Turn all your hangers around so at end of year you can see what you haven’t worn. Makes it easier to purge unused clothes.
@Kathie Sweeney
Great idea! Thanks for the tip!
I just saw this on another video of hers , I'm thinking she used your idea ! 🙌🏻😁
A tip with socks: I always buy two or even 3 pairs of the same socks. That way you get a lot longer use out of them.
I replaced all of my socks with one single type and color and it was a game changer. No more pairing up socks because they're all the same! I just stack them in my drawers and grab the top 2 whenever I need a pair to wear. The only other socks I kept were 2 pairs of compression socks for traveling and a pair of dress socks in case I need them.
@@justanotherjessica YES ! THIS comment right here !!!😊 life changing right!
@@justanotherjessica I always buy 10 pairs of the same black socks and then my sister bought me 20 pairs of different color and ankle socks so I can match them with my shirts because I'm kinda tomboy and she wanted me to be fashionable and now it's chaos :D
I also buy all white socks in the same style and always have matches. I have a few black ones for under corporate pants but do not know when I am gonna do that again.
I constantly declutter but this got me more motivated than ever!
We are doing a massive declutter before a cross country move. I found so many reusable bags I am using them to pack donations we need to take in.
Nursing homes can use the magazines. Great way to share
I purged my home before the virus hit and I’m soooo happy.
I'm a recent subber after I ran into your channel by accident. I was skeptical. "Oh, here's a 'Miss Perfect' making money on UA-cam (eye roll)." Buuut no! I really like your videos and I was wrong. They're entertaining, encouraging and motivating. Very upbeat and helpful when we didn't even realize we needed the help!
Thanks!
Yes! She has changed my whole attitude towards cleaning.
So glad I kept some craft supplies, when your kids hit the age of doing school projects, you will be glad you kept them on a Sunday night at 6pm. Trust me 😉
This is so true!
Yes! My son is a junior in high school and we had to break out the colored pencils and glue sticks for a science project.
I used to have a binder at work with all the take out menus from places that delivered or was close enough to do pick up. It was very useful for everyone on my team.
Me too! But at home...I use a simple folder for them, it's with the cookbooks in the kitchen cabinet. We actually use it.
Well now there's DoorDash, so no need for outdated paper menus.
This was great! When I clean as a single mom of a 4 year old, I usually clean for 7 minutes & then take a 7 minute break to play, do something relaxing like paint my nails or blow bubbles & have a dance party. I find that I can get a ton of stuff done & yet still have fun with my son or pamper myself. While watching this video, I cleaned my entire house 👏🏼 I’m so inspired by the video because during this time, I feel as though it is time to simplify & recreate our home 💕 I am planning on doing 1 room at a time & really going through literally everything 😆 when I’m not working full-time from home 🙏🏼 thank you again! I feel very empowered & excited to start. Even as I was cleaning I was getting rid of things that didn’t bring me joy 👏🏼 I will definitely be sharing this video with others!
🤣 I have, & still love, an overnight bag I bought to take to work at a summer camp in 1966. I plan to move to a one bedroom apartment next year & it's going with me!
My house as never been so clean and tidy. The porch has things waiting to go. Decluttering, cleaning, cooking and gardening. Not much else to do so I’m doing it xxx
I wish that you lived close by to help me 🙈 lol
First time I watched 1 hr video in youtube is absolutely this one. Good informative
A 1 hour clean my space video!!! Yes thank you!! 😁😁😁
Daniel Thornton I agree! Watching on my lunch break.
I saw a your yellow pineapple at Home Goods last month! I was way more excited than I should have been 😊
The key to reusable shopping bags is to always make sure you have one or two in your purse at all times, especially smaller purses. You end up buying another bag when you go out (you weren’t planning to go shopping but picked up a few items) because, well you need a bag to bring home your stuff.
Even nice shopping bags for foster kids.
another tip: Do Not throw away those empty boxes before warranty expires!
Ricky depending on the item, I hang onto my empty boxes for about 3 to 6 months. Just in case 🤷🏽♀️
I have literally just done about everything in this video whilst decluttering. The only thing remaining is getting rid of some furniture.
When i am gifted flowers i donate the vase to a local florist. They happily take them.
My mom's hospice team would always bring her a single flower every week in a vase. Of course we saved them so they could reuse them. Might check with nursing homes or other hospice organizations to see if they can use the vases.
I actually keep all those samples and travel sized items because I travel to my son's house (or did before all this) and never knew what they had. This has come in really handy now that I can't go to the store. Those small soaps, toothpaste tubes, and shampoos have really come in handy when I run out. I also have a large collection of CD's. I am OLD and am tired of constantly changing and having to pay for different ways to access music and movies etc. I actually have about 4 different CD players and use them. However, I do have some CD's that I can prune from the collection, especially the children's music as my grandchildren are now in their teens!!!
I agree re CD. I have over 300 of them and between my laptop and a proper multi-Cd player, I love listening to them.
I PICK UP TRAVEL SIZE FOR GUESTS...
@@anntrope491 yes, my sister has a basket of samples and travel size in her guest bathroom....and she does have plenty of guests.
I work with charities that give clothes to needy and homeless and they love all my samples and hotel soaps
Tip for small suitcase. I buy groceries for my parents so I keep it in my car and use it for bringing groceries inside.
Did anyone else take a gasp in surprise when they saw “adult toys” on the list before realising what she was talking about lol
I was like what?? 👀. Maybe its just me but I would have called them toys or a toy collection.
Well, the others should be cleaned well, too. Lol.
@@truepeacenik ha ha very true !
@@doloresw I agree with you ! Lol
LOL
Wow on the hair ties. I'm always coming up short - forever losing them. But for the occasional one no longer needed, i use for random opened snack bags in my travel cooler, or opened veggies in freezer.
You can put things like eye cream, moisturizer, sunscreen, etc. in the new contact lens cases that are not used when you are traveling since the liquid that is allowed is limited on planes. It won't take up much space and you wouldn't be using that much cream on a short trip anyways :)
Thank you. This is a great video - quick pace, useful content. So much content in such a short time. Again, thank you.
Sooo true. I got rid of some cook books. Months later I went back and got rid of more. The cabinet looks happier. I had some left over plastic accordian files and took the loose page recipies (that we use all the time) and put them in cool plastic accordian file. It is so nice.
LOL! Creepy Carl's Greasy Chicken...Yumm! Very useful video. I've been off work for weeks now and I'm going through the house getting rid of so much that I'm actually falling back in love with my house and it's space. I can't believe how much I've been able to stuff in here. I currently have several piles of CDs and DVDs that I've got to box up for charity. Now I just have to find space for my charity boxes for when they open back up.
Great videos as always, best to remain “uncluttered” at all times! Clutter isn’t a good look. Btw, looking flawless as always! 😊👍🏼 Keep up the great work.
I used to use contact lenses until I recently had cataract surgery. Contact lense cases were used for travel moisturizer, facial SPF, face primer, eye shadow primer, etc. Thanks for these great videos.
For the reusable bags, I will use them to hold food I donate to a food bank. That way, someone else might get use from it.
Similar thing: We recently replaced some laundry baskets. One is in terrible condition and is going to straight to recycling. The other is in decent condition, but the size/shape no longer works for us. That one is going to be filled with clothes to donate. When the basket is full, it goes to charity.
Awesome video and channel! Thank you for helping me recover from a bad hoarding situation.
I had so many pillows!!! I took them to a homeless camp. They were so appreciative and loved getting them!!
Thanks for being on here. 💥
Underwear threshold: when they no longer stay up by themselves, then I throw them out. True story.
Or they have holes.
Hi Melissa, Thanks for all the great work. Can you please show us how to clean reusable shopping bags very thoroughly and also how to clean dusty books? Thank you! Have a great day!
Awesome video as usual! During this time of quarantine I have really taken the time to evaluate my space to see how I can make it into my dream home. Hubby & I are currently renovating and I have taken been taking stock of anything that should no longer be around or organizing things I am keeping. I have also cleaned quite a bit and of course I always search through your videos for "how to" :)
I enjoy watching your videos, especially when I need motivation to clean and throw stuff away, donate, and sell. One tip I have: I use the slightly broken suitcases that still roll to store Christmas decor to put in the shed. It is much easier to roll to and from the house. Especially the lighted garland and wreaths that are cumbersome. Once they don't roll, we use them as outdoor cat beds. Throw some old rugs, blankets, and towels and set it somewhere off the ground so it doesn't get wet. We have a set of plastic shelves on the patio that I stack them on. I can also hang a sheet or blanket in front of the shelves when it's windy and/or raining.
Women’s shelters would love to have those samples
Plus luggage is great for Women-Space!
Bag those samples and travel sized items for the homeless.
Love the way that you get things done! Thanx so much❣ May God Bless you and keep you safe 🙏😁😇❤
"There aint no such thing as an R2D2 cable!" Bahahahah! This one gets me every time. My hubby is total sci fi geek and I have made so many faux pahs over the years!
Oh yes! I figure since they are made available for my use it makes no sense to leave opened shampoo, conditioner, and soaps at the hotel because they will probably throw them out. I actually use them during my “I want to be left alone and relax by myself” time. I Love it!! Thank you for sharing your always great ideas of cleaning, organizing, getting rid of, and maintaining our homes. You are the best. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for motivation. Can't wait to donate all this stuff!
If you make candles... Some of those vases could be repurposed as candle jars! 🔥🔥🔥
Being a crafter/ DIYer makes it hard to get rid of stuff - I can think of a way to reuse nearly everything. One of the great things my husband has done is make me question if I'd repurchase something if I got rid of it, can I afford to rebuy it when I actually need it, can I just use something else instead. On my craft supplies, I have to focus on, "just because you can, doesn't mean you want to." Having friends who are both avid crafters and eBay sellers really motivates me to pare down! Clothing is harder, but thinking about "who could use this more?" helps. Laughed at the underwear: as a kid, I somehow got the idea that the garbage collectors actually saw what you threw away, and I became terrified of them finding my dirty underwear in the trash, so I couldn't toss until clean. However, I was also so cheap, that once I'd spent the dollar at the laundry, I'd wear the poor things again lol. Veterinary clinics and animal shelters are a good place to offer not-so-lovely towels. I do tend to cut towels down into usable size, serge the edges, and use for cleaning. T-shirts get cut into dust cloths as well, and even some underwear. Socks are good dust gloves, or cut the ribbed top off and use as bottle cozy, sweat bands, even pony tail holders. A sock top also came in handy when I got poison ivy on my forearm - it protected other surfaces while letting the blisters dry out.
Would love to see you guys look back at some of the haul videos and tell us whether you still have that stuff or if it was actually useful.
Another sustainable option to lighters would be a rechargeable electric lighter. It can be recharged and used for a lifetime. You can find them on amazon
Olivia And wind doesn't affect them. I love mine!
We don't have an electric lighter; we're old school. We have a zippo that lasts for a lifetime lol. If it malfunctions in any way you mail it to Zippo and they fix it or replace it for free--for life. You can pop the top part of a disposable lighter off and remove the flint. The flint is use-able in the zippo. (edit: even when the disposable lighter is used up, the flint is longer than the new ones you can buy..so if you have friends who smoke you never have to buy flints and you can light candles for eternity haha) Upside is you don't need electricity. Downside is more clutter--flint container and lighter fluid.
I absolutely love mine as well!
This was super timely as I'm decluttering my whole house! It's just been so helpful.
A use for contact cases is travel or first aid kits. I put creams & ointments in them, or even foundation for short trips. If I need to take off my ring at the beach or earrings.
I decant makeup into contact lens cases for travel...I travel LIGHT!
keep the glass pyrex, buy new lids...
better yet, buy the silicone multi-size lids :D
I agree if the bowl is still good, a lid is an easy replacement and that would help our environment more than buying a whole new set and wasting a good glass container.
Contact cases are great for having in your travel cases. I have had moments when we were traveling and a bottom or clasp has popped off and no where to store until I could reattach it. Also great for headache medicine, or small jewelry in order to save space when I travel. They are also good for storing seed beads if you are a crafter.
Thank you for a detailed video.I am motivated to declutter.
I’m so excited for the microfibres towels I ordered 🔆😊
tip: you can use old Bath Squngies like the blue one to wash out Tube and sinks 😊
I do that. Kitchen brushes, sponges, scrub pads and toothbrushes that have less than half life left get moved to cabinet under bathroom sink. They become implements to clean bathroom, clean shoes, or move to my bike cleaning bucket. Once these items are no longer good for cleaning bathroom, shoes or bike , they are thrown in trash.
I use contact lens containers for travel. I put my liquid foundation in them. Perfect for travel!
Small toothpaste, lotion, etc. can be donated to food pantries.
We love Apples to Apples, can be played with large or small groups and best of all you take a snack break without interrupting the game!
I love the plastic business cards to spread my primer or paints on my art work. And old tee i make yarn out off and use it for my crotche. I put my bobby-pins in toothpick dispensers then put the hair ties on the outside of the toothpick dispenser. So it acts as a hair-tie holder at the
I use Giift bags to hold my clean cleaning cloths. It hangs on a hook above my laundry sink. I also use a gift bag in broom closet to hold my vacum attachment.
I love your bright yellow “coffe cup”😊. I thought it can be used as a mixing bowl. 👏👏
Did anyone else decluttered while listening?
@Teri Gwyn Neither do I now.
Holy Crap, your office is incredible.
Got a lot off those reusable bags in my house.
But i use them.
Some are used as laundry bags, some for going to the grocery store
Awesome info. You've inspired me and I'm getting started on decluttering right now. Thanks😀
sample or travel size item can be donated to homeless shelters. They love these
Exactly, I hold on to it because I paid money for it...It’s so funny how you read our psyche...You are great! Thanks for the inspiration and the fun!
🤣🤣"There's no such thing as an R2-D2 cable!"🤣🤣 Also, love the Dilithium T-Shirt!
So many different categories of things one may tend to overlook which you have covered so well.
Very useful content. Also one big payoff is that one's space becomes more easy to clean and more manageable and your home does not look crowded and suffocating.
Also I like the concept of embracing open space rather than once again filling up with useless stuff. Tks.🙏
The free hangers go back to the ironing/laundry people so they get re-used... yup
My partner has his keys in a drawer and they are all labelled with coloured tags. It works so well
Highly recommend Catalog Choice to reduce unwanted catalog mail - turn it off at the tap.
I can tell you now, if that T2 toy is an original from the 90s it CAN sell for about 40 USD on ebay. (I worked at a comic book store/collectibles store, people do ask for these)
Hi there!! Please would you recommend to viewers that when giving away old or unwanted towels, blankets or any kind of bedding suggest to donate them to animal shelters or pet hospital, they really can use them. Thanks,
The clips with the purple sleeveless shirt is cute. I had that shirt back in college. I think we are both circa 1982. Love your channel and checked out your book clean my space from the local library!!
