When I lived on Kwaj 25 years ago, the King was a Kabua, the President of the Marshall Islands was a Kabua, the Senator from Ebeye was a Kabua, and the Chief of Police was a Kabua. Yuk We
Please show respect to these islanders, we live in poverty, US lease our island for war purpose, it's a deal between these two nations, and yeah US has to responsible for everything especially for the war debris. Bikini Atoll and Enewetak atoll are still poison from the hydrogen and atomic bombs US detonated. We are human being just like all others human, but the US government does not care for us because we are a small nation, don't have our own currency. US cannot do that to the nations of its own size. Many Marshallese young boys and girls are serving in the US military. All US citizens who are living on our shore, we treat them as our brothers and sisters. Please treat us as human being.
hello - appreciate your post. I'm in Ebeye currently. Is there any way a popular uprising of these people to re-take kwaj could be possible? This is not American land. I'm inspired to ask by the 'Great March of Return' protests due to israeli occupation of Gaza. Thank you -
I am a US citizen who lived and taught as a volunteer on Ebeye from August 2009 until May 2010. I was only able to go to Kwaj on occasion, and had to be sponsored by a Kwaj resident to do so (so much for being a taxpayer . . . ), so I'm no big fan of the "Kwaj Lifestyle". But, knowing about what it is like there more accurately than 99% of most of the commentators here (no disrespect), this film is primarily just another piece of propaganda. The objectivity didn't even begin to evince itself until 12:20 into the video. My definition of propaganda is: "material that is presented to another, and which may be factually correct, but is designed, not to educate, but appeal to ignorance, biases, misconceptions or preconceptions in order to make a point, and coerce another to a point of view that they would not otherwise hold if presented with the full range of objective facts on the issue". Everything contained in this video is factually correct, but at (in my opinion) too many points does not paint an objective picture of what the reality is there. A few things to maybe bring a little balance . . . When I was there, there were around 40 uniformed US military personnel on Kwaj. The remaining was composed of DOD civilian subcontractors that run the machines. Most of the people you see in this video are there with their spouses and/or performing in what we would call the civilian sector- teachers, admin staff, logistical support, etc. The Marshallese who work on Kwaj are very "lucky". Why? Because they make $5.00/hr where the typical subsistence wage is $5.00/day. If you can find work. And what do those 900 Kwaj employees do with their wages? They support the bulk of the 15,000 residents of Ebeye. Why? Because they are family. I found out very quickly that almost no one on Ebeye is wealthy, but no one goes hungry and no one is homeless. That's the way of their culture. My students could not comprehend the idea of homelessness to the point where their curiosity overcame their shyness and they started to ask questions on their own . . . "What do you mean? Their mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins don't want them?" And two days later, "I thought about what you told us, what about their mother's sister's family?" May they never lose this compassion as they become "developed". But don't think that there isn't wealth to be had. The landowners make a fortune off of the lease payments made by the US Gov't for the base at Kwaj. US policy in broad terms is "everything is subservient to the Base" and the money just keeps on coming. But, ask the landowners, who can also be chiefs and senators, what they and their families do with what they get paid. . (Hint: It doesn't tend to go to better the lives of their subjects or constituents.) The traditional clan leaders have failed their people as much as the national government has failed their constituents. It's not all or nearly the fault of US policy. However, I want to express my admiration for both Michael Kabua and Gif Johnson, both of whom I've met and who have a better grasp of the situation than many of their contemporaries in both countries.
Looks like you just wrote something too wonderfull for my generation to blasphem with it's feral arrogant gaze. That was beautiful and very insightful. Thank you.
It's classic US tactic, give the locals the bushcutter and gas, but let them figure out how to maintain it. It's the whole, hey I did my part, can't blame me. 🤦🏾♂️
@Frederick B, you forget that it was colonial contact that made islanders become part of the global community and economy, thereby forcing them to become reliant on other countries for goods, money and other necessities which weren't really "necessities" before. While they choose to go there in search of jobs, it's because they have no choice to. Not because they are especially ecstatic about it.
My dad used to work/live on kwajalein for a long time. from like 1995-2000 ish. Doing work for the military. I didnt know anyone even knew about this island.
ive been to Ebeye and spent over a month there ,Ive never seen anything like it children every where growing old with no regards of there dysfunction. SAD!!!!!! yet beautiful like Ive said many time to people beauty and the Beast.....
@iTRES4teen I lived on Kwaj for years. The Americans keep it clean by picking up and properly disposing of the garbage. The people on Ebeye could do the same thing if you weren't so busy having babies. Put some effort into cleaning up the island and you'd be surprised what a difference it would make. By the way... how's my old friends Boris and Robin ? Do they still work at the power plant on Kwaj ?
That is part of what I think the U.S. owes to them, build schools, and fund education on the islands 100%, as well as provide educators. Most people in the U.S. don't even know about this though. That's part of the problem, I think that if people here were informed of situations like this, that the U.S. is partially responsible for problems on these islands that there would be more pressure on the politicians to help these people.
As a Marshallese citizen. it's very hard for me to watch this video till the end . I don't know why but it just hard! I saw this video before back in 2009. at Kwajelein Atoll High School ( Marshallese Public High School) not the one on the main Island of Kwajelein .
What they don't mention is that the wages are kept artificially low by the Marshallese government, and the massive amounts of money distributed to the traditional land owners who went on to buy condos and airplanes in the US. It was originally agreed that the money would be distributed to those traditional leaders, and they would distribute it to their "tenants." This, obviously, never happened. The US also rebuilt the power and water plants upwards of 4 times each since relinquishing Ebeye.
I went to Ebeye about 2 months ago. It is really amazing and sickening the condition these people live in. The worst conditions you will ever see people living in in the entire world. I feel for them deeply. And to think of why this is and how it started, and even that something could be done, but isnt, is even more sickening.
I know it makes me so furious! I cannot understand how the U.S. government can spend so much money on military and defense when way too many Americans can't afford health insurance, and our public schools are worse than other developed nations. I really wish the U.S. would withdrawal from involving itself in foreign affairs and just focus on the country itself and help the people. The amount spent on the Iraq war could have completely revamped our health care and school systems.
@nerblebun oh cool!! my dad use to live on kwajalein too back in like the 70s thats how he met my mom :) ur right though we could help ourselves but we dont have good leadership :/ it makes me sad to see my home go to waste..umm i actually was born in hawaii but i was in majuro and ebeye last summer..sorry i dont know that many people on kwaj!! I wish i was home though :'(
america created a trust but placed a chastity belt around to make it dificult for Marshallese to actually claim the compensation. After the first lease was up, america illegally occupied Kwajalein in 1982 (Operation Homecoming) and continued to do their tests in the lagoon, to this day, no environmental implication report has been publicly available. Marshallese people were fine with the Japanese.
omg,Big Bad America, When I lived on Kwaj 30 years ago, there were about one fifth of the people living in ebeye. Islanders chose to come to Ebye, they were not magically transported there in the last 30 years. read the answer from Darkwerewolf, read the history, the "landowners" (marshalese) have maybe a few answers in how the money is being spent that is coming from the US. The US did not add 15000 people, kwaj is 5 hours from Hawii, not just anyone could live on Kwaj which is very isolated
@nerblebun thats true!! i like the idea of cleaning it but dumping it in the ocean i actually dont agree with!! hopefully ebeye will keep up with the rest of the world and go green find someway to get rid of the garbage without harming our precious ocean :) thank you so much for making these suggestions and not being a bias pig like most people would..anij wot ibbem[god bless you]
I don't think that the classes were "created" though, they were already defined before the base's creation, the well paid educated people who live on the military base, and the natives who have a different type of lifestyle, a more traditional one. The fact that natives were displaced because of the military there does add to the poverty though. I agree that the U.S. owes more to the natives, but the U.S. is not the only ones to create issues such as this. Throughout time Euro-nations have.
For sake of spending a few $ sorting the place out most of the cmments here would not have been posted. even if there is a hint of apartied there also.
Did you notice important Marshallese government officials were named ALL Kabua ? They all have their condos in Honolulu and live a very good life. That's what happens whenever America gives them money for the betterment of their people and conditions.
Removed previous comment as a little strong, but this is absolutely disgraceful considering they nuked the place, moved the people out and then pretty much moved in!
I didn't know the Japanese invaded some islands east of Alaska during World War two. I didn't know that Japan actually ventured that far north which was surprising considering Soviet territory was largely unprotected due to their forces busy with their Western Front and was "easy target" up to 1944. I know they (the Japanese) tested balloons and tried to use the wind to have them fly over to the West Coast to start wild fires or something but I don't think they were successful.
I do agree though that the U.S. government should be doing a lot more to aid the natives there, because they are in need, and the army is there as a guest that land, and have caused some problems, but honestly I don't that the poverty is caused 100% by the army base there. The islands were poverty stricken before.
We lease this land...not own it. The Marshallese government is the reason Ebeye is the way it is. I spent two years there, and I'm aware it is a very complex problem. The USA is the source of almost all money and commerce in the area, not the source of the overcrowding and poverty. And PS...the food isn't often like that..It's daily much like Army chow, no one serves anyone, it's a cafeteria.
+Bill Clancy Ebeye is the result of centuries of colonialism and oppression. The islanders survived for thousands of years on their islands with the "lack of resources" that Americans so arrogantly say there are. Prior to western contact, native islanders in Oceania were master navigators and seafarers. They were able to travel to the resources they needed to survive; the vast ocean provided for them. When white men arrived, Oceania was divided in to sub-regions, effectively creating barriers and inhibiting the natives to land which caused them to turn to larger nations for support. Make no mistake, the US and other large nations are 100% at fault for this mess. Educate yourself.
Sara Kobayashi lols... But the new generation isnt like that anymore... Youd be surprice when outer island would call for help and say they have nothing to eat... Only to realize that they ran out of SPAM... They are good people, but have been too dependent on the US... Ones the aid workers got there they were surpriced to see chicken and pigs on the streets just walking around... Btw, they visited an island, bunch of lobsters was at the beach... So these expats who work there started cooking some, locals dont and informed the expats of the radiation contained in the fish... Till now some islands are bulldozed with new topsoil due to fall out...
+Uzi Panti Yes, but whose fault is it that they don't know how to fend for themselves? I agree with what you're saying; don't get me wrong, I am just as upset as anyone else about the choices they make and their reliance on government support. I live in Hawaii where many displaced Micronesians have been relocated to. Their presence causes conflict with Native Hawaiians, especially those who don't qualify for assistance and struggle to make it. Locals see themselves as working hard to provide for these people who shouldn't be here but are forced to be because of US actions in their homelands.
It's somewhat true, the Marshallese or the ones on Ebeye don't take pride for the Island, do to leader ship, maybe they should put the presure on those who takes the compensasion, and make the Marshalls a better place for all of us, instead of investing their oun revished lifes styles, you disgraced demons..
The USA did arguably the most horrifying thing ever done by man, and they did it in a random stranger's yard. This isn't like a typical land issue; Aus Aboriginies, American Natives, not even like Palestinians. This is more like being held hostage by a psycho in a slasher flick, but way worse and it never ends. I can't imagine a plan to fix this but I know that until such a plan takes effect, the right thing to do is for the USA to shower these people with wealth.
I will admit that I don't know anything about your people, however, America's presence in the pacific cannot be the cause of the poverty that exists in many areas there. I think that if anything those kinds of U.S. bases help the people, providing them with safe decent work. I could be wrong though. I honestly wish however that the U.S. would get ride of all foreign army bases in countries throughout the world. I think it does provide security, but we aren't wanted and also it creates tension.
the people of ebeye choose to live there, how is the united states to blame for that? they lived there before and in the 80's many more CHOSE to move there in search of jobs at the base, I think I will make a documentary on how, lets say canada, has moved these people off ebeye and forced them to pack in little huts like sardines. could one not say that (pick any country) is to blame for the mess on ebeye? just saying..
You want the truth or what I think is the truth and the reality of the matter? What would you know about living in USA? You and your people happen to be in the wrong place and wrong time in history. I wish peace was possible. Just look around in the world today and read a history book about people at war. Unless you have an idea, then peace with humans can't happen, won't happen. hasn't happened. I pray to Buddha, Allah, Trees, God, Abraham and the sun for peace. Peace
I do not mean this as a political discourse and I hope folks do not take it that way. We now have a working missile defense system based in Kwajalein/Vandenberg AFB. Bush and later Obama made a big deal of establishing a missile defense system based in Europe. It seems to me that the one we have now is more than enough, maybe updated. Why spend billions more on starting one in Europe while we have this one? Comments?
Most Native Americans died from disease from the Spanish. More than half died If I remember correctly. Granted though, Native Americans were pushed around and killed with Western Expansion as they like to call it, as though nothing was there before us. The problem is, most were from Europe and landed throughout the Americas, that includes Canada. Dont think your people were innocent either.
MY HOME KWAJALEIN ATOLL[MONKUBOK WETO,EBEYE] U PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS LOOK UP 'EBEYE'..ITS ONLY 20 MINS AWAY BY BOAT[5 BY WATER TAXI] FROM THE MILITARY BASE BUT ITS A SLUM!! IF EBEYE WAS SO CLOSE WHY DONT THE AMERICANS HELP MY PEOPLE BUILD UP EBEYE?!
Death of the Pacific Ocean - the largest carbon dioxide sink in the World - ruining this carbon dioxide sink will cause rampant anthropogenic climate change - people sitting about playing trivial games is like rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic as the Titanic sinks.
american history isn't real history, it's selective amnesia. Japan, didn'tt evade the RMI or Micronesia. They were forced by the UN to relinquish control and hand over the territories to the u.s. to be fostered. If you meant invade, then that only applies to Guam, which was already an american occupied territory after Spain. The billions you speak of are for the four directly affect islands as a result of the atom and nuclear bomb tests (ERUB). Which america has not fully paid.
As an American i can assure you that we are sick and tired of the government ass holes in charge. Believe it when i say we do not (for the most part) agree with our corrupt government. And for what it's worth i apologize for ever meeting us or having to know of US.

I think it does provide security, but we aren't wanted and also it creates tension.
the people of ebeye choose to live there, how is the united states to blame for that? they lived there before and in the 80's many more CHOSE to move there in search of jobs at the base, I think I will make a documentary on how, lets say canada, has moved these people off ebeye and forced them to pack in little huts like sardines. could one not say that (pick any country) is to blame for the mess on ebeye? just saying..
bullshiet@ALL KABUA
You want the truth or what I think is the truth and the reality of the matter?
What would you know about living in USA?
You and your people happen to be in the wrong place and wrong time in history. I wish peace was possible. Just look around in the world today and read a history book about people at war. Unless you have an idea, then peace with humans can't happen, won't happen. hasn't happened. I pray to Buddha, Allah, Trees, God, Abraham and the sun for peace.
Peace
wow thats bad
So who gets the united states rent money? The UFSM?
The Kabua clan
sad.
