I appreciate this discussion! Abuse is not a marriage problem where conventional approaches to improve communication help. Abuse is an individual character/heart problem that causes problems in relationships, including marriage. There will be no improvement in relationships until the individual using abusive tactics faces, deals with and resolves their character shortcomings. Abuse can be overt such as physical assault/force or covert, such as gaslighting, manipulation, misuse of Scripture, threats, etc. Abuse always seems to be characterized by a dominating control over and a profound disrespect for the personhood of another individual. Right understanding of who God is and our inherent worth and value is determined by God, not by people and how they may have treated us. He loves us and He is a God of truth, not lies.
