Visualizing Piano with Bouncing Balls (Chopin - Nocturne op.9 No.2)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 сер 2024
- I've synchronized bouncing balls to hit the piano keys in time with Chopin - Nocturne op.9 No.2. The balls then collect at the bottom to form an image. It took me over 54 hours to create this.
There are some big upgrades on this piano printer compared to my previous creations. I can now use the absolute event time of the notes taken from SMPTE time code rather than ticks (converted to milliseconds). This allows me to use midi files with many tempo changes without the physics becoming off from the music. My script also calculates the duration of the notes, allowing me to create a particle "tail" representing how long the note is held.

Chopin makes the weirdest requests for how he wants his self-portraits painted!
Do you know what a self portrait is??
@@Z.L.K. I mean, seeing as it was "painted" with his music by someone else, I would say that it is in a way a bit of a self portrait.
@Sam Hansen a self portrait is when a person paints themselve
@@Z.L.K. You did understand it was a joke, right? (please, tell me yes... Even if it's a lie)
Pierre I mean he obviously knows it a joke. I think he's just saying that it was just a portrait and not a self-portrait
ah dammit i hate it when i accidentally spill a bunch of marbles onto my piano and it plays chopin nocturne op.9 no.2
xd
Lol me too
Its really annoying
It seems pretty awesome to me. Mine just refuses to do it, though.
It only plays Liszt, and it says Chopin is for wimps.
Damn my marbles can't play Chopin instead it plays rachimanoff sad times
Everybody gangsta till the randomly thrown marbles make a Chopin portrait.
can I ruin it for you and tell you the marbles were painted at the end and then it was re-run with the painted version... sorry I mean *ahem... it's magic 🤷♀️
@@knifeyonline yeah, they were probably white, and he coloured the marbles, and then then rerunning the program and vóila, magic
@@han-huo yeah, you call that process baking. ha ran the animation and then baked the rigid body sim so that it would run the exact same every time ;) but no, of course it's magic ;)

Same. Saw it around a third of the way through
I like how the balls don't fall directly, they have to do a travel.

Lol
And make better portraits than you at the same time
Oh hi
As a wise man once said, “Teach monkeys how to write, and eventually they’ll write Shakespeare”
@@gabeyab Wasn't that about an infinite amount of monkeys smashing on a keyboard?
It would probably have taken long enough just to get the marbles to hot the right notes at the correct times, but he didn't stop there. No, he had to make them paint a picture as well.
Once the physics simulation has run, it's basically just an animation and he can colour the balls retroactively :D
@@patrickhector I mean painting those mixed-colour balls must have still taken some time to get right though, I don't think there's any way to automatically paste an image directly onto the skins of multiple balls like that without cheating and just using some kind of mask (which they obviously didn't because the marbles don't shift their colour as they move)
Chece You don’t need to paint the rendering. As long as you trust the simulation to be consistent, you can probably recolor the balls and run the simulation a second time. The balls will land in the same place, this time colored.
Albert Wen to make the simulation always the same you can “bake” it
@Chece Pasting an image directly onto the marbles is possible. All marbles can be assigned the exact same full image as the texture, then their UV coordinates remapped to show specific parts of it on specific marbles. If you have blender installed, you can try it yourself: duplicate an object a bunch of times, select all copies, go into edit mode (make sure all faces are selected on all objects), press U, and select "project from view". You can even change which angle the image will be visible from depending on what angle you look when you do this.
“Jimmy play something on the piano”
“I can’t”
“Ok, then...”
“But my Marbles would do”
There's so many things to take into account when creating this. DoodleChaos not only managed to play the piano with marbles, but even the expression is included, not to mention the different marble colors that had to be used to create a portrait of Chopin.
You could probably run the simulation, and then color all the balls in post when they've all collected at the bottom to make the portrait. Much easier than predicting every ball's movement (unless you individually animated them)
@@warp1174 That’s probably exactly what he did.
@@KentuckyFriedChildren the again, he managed to put the portrait of Chopin in a 3D simulation purely by colored balls.
@@caprisces6139 many of the marbles are multicolored (ex: lips), so yeah it's just a picture put on the marbles after they've settled
And this is how people write sheet music. The let a bunch of marbles on a piano and they watch what happens next.
Chopin's marble skills were on point then

This classic music is truly beautiful. And, I remember people playing this type of music on my grandfather’s birthday
i see u every video
I also remember when I was young, whenever we visit her in her house. Because it made me happy, she always played music, one of this songs, for me.
Well, it was always a chore to clean up the marbles afterwards though.
You, again? I see you on every single piano synthesis video.
I'm not sure whether this is classical or romantical music, and I'm also not sure what the difference is. But I kinda heard someone saying that this is romantism not classicism.

This is not classical, it is romantic; you're at the right place.
@@wolfgangamadeusmozart1816 Classical is both a period and a type of music. The romantic period showcased classical music that showed a more emotional side of composers and the classical period showcased classical music that was more refined and simplistic.
@@wolfgangamadeusmozart1816 you would call Johann Sebastian Bach a classical composer but he was actually from the baroque period

Great video and animation.

Wow! You must have reverse engineered a LOT!
Seems like all you’d have to do is let the program run once and then retexture the skin of each of the balls based on where they ended up.
@Charlie, you still have to get every marble to hit its correct note. In other simulations he’s done, it requires way more effort. Not sure about this one though, it seems straight forward
What the fxck does this have to do with reverse engineering?
@@1996Pinocchio Good luck painting the balls with the right color before you know where they land.
@@DanielCallejasSevilla yeah, exept you dont have to, you can "paint" them AFTER the simulation, really you just have to project the texture from your view, this can take as little as one or two minutes when you know what you are doing. Im sorry that the tone of this comment turned out so agressive i didnt mean to do that.
Man. This was just very satisfying to watch. The piano tone you chose was top-notch as far as midi goes. Keep up this awesome stuff mate.
This is by far one of the most beautiful and full of art ideas executed ever.
When there's chaos, there's harmony.
don’t show this to wintergarten, he’d be tempted to make it and add it to the marble machine haha
Wintergatan could probably get this whole thing, including the picture the balls make, to work in real life.
I don’t think it’s possible to make the portrait as the interaction between the balls means the slightest bit of variety in the environment would drastically change some of the ball positions. The actual bounding balls would look insane irl
Thanks for the tutorial! I can now use the force of gravity and physics to control the marbles’ movements, and manage to hit the keys of the piano to perfectly play Chopin’s Nocturne op.9 no.2 while having the colored marbles organized to fall to create a portrait of Chopin himself.

I thought the animation was amazing *before* I saw the beginnings of the portrait.
I cannot begin to explain to you how thrilled and amazed I am.
Thank you *so much* for sharing
The thing that still gets me is that the piano keys were pressed a certain number of times, and it took ONLY that many marbles to make a very good portrait
someone should make a game out of this. that you could import a midi file and just boom.
It takes a lot more work than that

This is literally the concept for Wintergatan😂😂😂
It is very beautiful, Doodle Chaos! Your 54 hours of work is not in vain.
And what’s amazing is that they are actually landing on the right notes.
Me after knowing the picture:
Oh its just a artist I thought it would be something cool
I assume this was done by first doing the piano, and then seeing how they all fall, and setting the colours that way
This song hits the "do you remember all the times you're down? It's all over now." Feels
It’s so satisfying to see the picture being formed at the bottom
Once those balls hop off the piano, it's chaos from my perspective. Anything could happen. For you to line up the physics of each one so that as they roll to their final position, bumping into each other and changing direction along the way, they end up forming an image, is something I cannot begin to fathom.
It took me a while to understand how you did this. It's simple but very tedious and the result is awesome. Great work my friend! 👍
Doodle, I feel like I've just seen a magic show. Spectacular work! Don't ever change. :)

I was so anxious for the entire video that some funky bol will bounce in the wrong way.
The marbles making the image is really cool
Also imagine droping marbles on your piano and making music
I'd have to assume that choreographing the marbles to fall just right to sync up would be the hardest part, then actually texturing the marbles to make the portrait.
Well done
