While flying Blackhawk helicopters for the Army, I was in Egypt, in the desert and a pack rat got up in the ceiling and ate through a wide harness. He got something over a hundred wires. It took a team of electrical techs three weeks to get that helicopter able to just get back to the states for a rebuild. And it never was right afterwords. Makes shoots rats satisfying!

    Bounce Scented Fabric Dryer Sheets
We have lots of rodents on our ranch and we've found that Bounce Scented Fabric Dryer Sheets, tied and attached, in and around the engine bay, have all but eliminated the chewing issues. Cheep fix and doesn't stink up the vehicle like rat urine and such. Actually smells better than any other thing we tried.
    Great video and diagnostics!!!

Warren, and anyone else dealing with rodent issues, the trick is to use Honda rodent tape.
Part number 4019-2317, it has capsaicin (from chili peppers) embedded in the glue.
Stuff works great to wrap harness sections with after repair. I use it quite a bit myself.

I have several old barn buildings on my property that draw rats/mice. We keep them under control several ways. First, we encourage all the black snake, rat snake population that we can. One hungry black snake will wipe out a whole nest at a time. Second we put rat bait out. It can wipe out several colonies in one night. From what vet told me, the rat poison concentrates in the rats gut which makes it very unlikely to accidentally poison a pet. Even if they were to eat a sick rat the vet said a dose of vitamin K is the antidote for rat poison. Apparently rat poison simply causes a rat to bleed to death internally and vitamin K stops it. I put it out in areas where dogs, squirrels and other desirable critters cannot get to it. If it wasn’t for doing that we’d be overrun with them since most farmers are growing grains here that they thrive on.

we had that problem in the garbage industry with rats . Apparently the plastic wire coating is made with vegetable oil and of course the rats love that and eat through to the wire which shorts out against the frame or other metal components . Many a truck i drove broke down and had to be towed back to the yard , then try and find the chewed wires .

    Warren,
I'd be buying a pack of rat baits and leaving them on the seat and adding the cost to the bill.
Down here in South Australia we had a disastrous brush fire some years back that was found to have been started by trees shorting the powerlines.
Since then the power network company has been required to trim back dangerous growth from areas around the lines and has crews patrolling year round to accomplish this. It ain't pretty to look at their handywork but it has been effective.
Surely California can afford to do the same rather than shutting down the power in times of high winds.
Even if the power company added a couple of bucks a year to the users bills it has to be cheaper than starting from scratch for those who lose everything in a brush fire.
    Cheers Eric

    Hey Boss!
I like the video. I work up in AB canada on oil field equipment, 350 Chev’s driving hydraulic pump skids mostly, inside small shacks. I have fixed a ton of chewed wiring on them. I actually found a quick way to fix them without having to cut and splice all the time. Use Super 88 from 3M, and cut a piece of it off long enough to cover the damage. Make sure the wire is clean, lay it on the wire along its length carefully so its edge is inline with the wires center. Then slowly massage it on, while slowly working your way around it. If you master it, it can be indistinguishable from heat shrink. Ive gone back to units years later, and its still perfectly intact. One time I opened up a junction box, about 12” x 18” and no word of a lie it was literally half full of mouse crap. It was an older shack that had been left sitting in a farmers field for years. Nasty stuff.

Let me see if I remember all the gizmos in a Cat Backhoe it’s been a while since I operated one ( 420D - 420E ) The D model is close to the one you are in, the 2 levers on the left are for outriggers ( obviously) the lever below that is to lock the boom during transport so it doesn’t bounce up and down ( helps reduce some hop going down the road ) there’s a pin that goes in also that stops possible sideways swing, right joy stick is a wheel for the extended boom, left joy stick is the horn button that red switch is the hydraulic lock out switch when it’s locked in theory if you bump the joysticks nothing will move. Now I don’t know if this one has a ride control switch in it but that’s a real nice feature because when it’s on there is no bounce at all when driving distances, another nice feature is the auto shift but you can also manually shift if you prefer. I also forgot there might be a switch in the front to use four wheel drive.

Powdered cayanne pepper generously sprinkled wherever you do not want those nasty rodents to go and set plenty of Tom Cat plastic snap traps in the cab, under the hood filled with either peanut butter or cheddar cheese if you can refill it it often. Leave the hood up and open 24/7 especially in the winter time since that is just about the only thing that will keep em out of a tractors engine compartment, once they go in there when you park the tractor after use in cold weather you will have a hell of a time keeping them out and at that point keeping the hood open is your best bet.
