Tip: use the old oil paint from the bottom of the pot for the first layer of your oilpainting, the grounding layer. The color is rich because of all the colors used before, so do not throw it away! Use it thin, a bit transparent like the grounding layer of Rembrandt. A tip I received from a classic painter. 🎨 I use two pots for cleaning so I can choose the sort of color I prefer for the grounding layer. One for warm and one for cold colours.
I've always been told this-- I love it because (while it might be gray) it is an amalgamation of color and process that you can't find anywhere else! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
You might suggest or wear gloves while rubbing the brushes against your palm to protect your skin from the solvents, paints, oils, etc.
Good point, thanks! -Prof Lieu
I've just started oil painting - this was super helpful!
Is D & L hang cleaner also helpful for washing brushes when using acrylics?
Yes!! -Prof Lieu
I can’t wait until the Streams come back!
Woohoo!! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
I've used mineral oil. Dip wipe, dip wipe, dip wipe. It's clean.
Exactly!- Mia, Art Prof Staff
I am very new to oil paint. I just bought this. Instead of gamsol, can I use odourless turpentine instead? Will the paint settle down for turpentine too? Thank you:)
Yes you can! It will settle just fine. -Prof Lieu
Thanks!
Wow! Thank you so much for supporting us Kyle!!! -Prof Lieu
I actually work with tools all day so seeing something like gojo, which we use to clean oil and stuff off of our hands, used in oil painting felt so strange. I never would have thought something like a mechanics soap would be used in the arts.
At art school this stuff is everywhere! It surprised me at first too :) - Mia, Art Prof Staff
I think this coil will be excellent for gouache too. I am sure oil painters will laugh but I have trouble leaving a brush with anything on and gouache is way more difficult to clean than people expect from a water soluble paint.
You're so right, I always just expect everything to wash out the first time and get frustrated when it doesn't! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Hi! I’m a high school student applying to art schools this year! As an art professor do you think portfolios should have a theme or is it ok if i make varied thematic pieces
I think variation is wonderful in a school portfolio!! Check out this website for more advice, we think it might help you out: artprof.org/art-school/bfa-programs-art-school/preparing-an-art-school-portfolio/ - Mia, Art Prof Staff
I use a bar of soap that cleans my brushes easily. ❤️
Is it just a standard soap bar, or do you prefer a specific brand? -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
Ooohhh Cool
It's satisfying to watch! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Will it work with Zest it?
Idk! Haven’t used it before! -Prof Lieu
Can you filter the gamsol?
I think that you can mix gamsol with different mediums like linseed oils & such, but I've personally never tried filtering it! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
