Hey Collette, the old guy in all the movies is Stan Lee. The father of Marvel and it's characters. Keep an eye out for him in all the Marvel films.
Does she even know that this is all comic book origin? Didn't seem like she understood the tights and everything.
Ironically, Cap is not one of Stan's creations. However one of Cap's co creators, Jack Kirby, was co creator with Stan of most of the heroes we're meeting in Phase 1.
Although come to think of it, since Cap's revival in the 60s was due to Stan and Jack, I guess that would make Stan Cap's stepfather

Stan gets more credit for the creation of Marvel characters than he deserves but what he was in Marvel history was a great marketer. He knew what people wanted and how to change the characters to fit the reading audience. Kirby, Simon and all the rest had their disagreements with Stan but in the end working together really built the foundation that is Marvel. Since the 80's Stan Lee pretty much just sold his image and did not do much creating and he was good at it. Everyone thinks every character was created by Stan Lee. In fact most were created by someone else but Stan new how to change them to make them more marketable to the public. If it wasn't for Stan Lee Spiderman would have had a cape and been an old guy. Stan knew to make the character more relatable. Larry Lieber Stan's brother and Kirby along with Simon are the most responsible for what people now know as the core Avengers Team. Since the 80s Marvel has been a more corporate creative company and Stan Lee was more about pushing his image as the founder of Marvel which technically he wasn't but it was never worth the fight. Stan had to make a living and Marvel was just fine with the extra publicity.

He was asleep for 70 years doesn't actually mean he slept. He was frozen for 70 years inside the hydra bomber because he crashed it into artic. All Howard Stark found after WW2 was the teseract. They just now found Steve.
Or they found a way to re-animate a frozen body... ?

And now you’re introduced to Cap. What makes Steve different from other heroes before him in this franchise is he is just a guy who wants to do the right thing he’s not a billionaire with swagger like Tony, he’s not a ground breaking intellectual like Bruce, and he’s not a god of legend like Thor. He’s just a kid from Brooklyn whose determination and steadfastness is unbreakable his strength is his heart. Being a comic fan is the biggest curse of watching these movies because you know enough of what to expect when my friends and I saw this movie in theatres I knew what exactly would happen when Steve crashed and it killed me to keep the ending secret. Him waking up decades later his war long over and everything and everyone he knew is gone was heartbreaking all the things all the people Steve fought for gone. Plot was pretty cut and dry it was essentially a war movie with a megalomanic evil man who Steve vanquished in the end and to save the world he was willing to make the sacrifice play it worked the world was saved but in surviving life as Steve knew it is literally over. Keep up the good work up next is what all the past movies have been building towards can’t wait to for you to see it.

Do not sweat it. As long as you do Avengers in Order is more important. Plus, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and Hulks are Character Progression in movies. That way we have a back story to Avengers.
Don't forget to see The Incredible Hulk before seeing The Avengers.

The next Captain America movie is going to bring even more feels, so be ready.
If you need more Peggy Carter in your life, she did feature in 2 seasons of "Marvel's Agent Carter," which follows her adventures after the war.
I was a little disappointed the "Agent Carter" one shot wasn't incorporated into the series, but even with the conflicting storylines, they are both great, especially the series.

Besides, there’s an Easter egg in Phase 3 for those that have seen it. It may not be cannon as originally planned, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth seeing.

The best marvel film until now. Greatness
The serum does not prevent him from aging. He does heal faster though. The reason he didn't age while he slept was that Red Skull's plane crashed in the arctic. Cap was frozen in arctic snow until the plane was found and he and his shield were recovered, as we saw in that scene at the beginning of the movie. That was set shortly before he woke up in the bed at the end of the movie.
The serum kinda helped him survive while being frozen in ice. A normal human can't be frozen for years like that.
It's hilarious to see people try to "Logic" comic book Nonsense, that was developed for even more nonsensical films.

If you remember Iron Man 2, Tony creating the new element was based on his dad’s research into the Tesseract. You can actually see drawings of the cube in Howard’s notebook.
If you liked the actor who plays Dr. Erskine, Stanley Tucci, go find his other movies. He makes everything he’s in better. And he’s in a *lot* of stuff - I’d personally recommend “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (1999 - also with Kevin Kline and Michelle Pfeiffer), and “The Devil Wears Prada.”
The doctor was pointing at his heart, to try and remind him of "what really matters."

Steve and Bucky weren't drafted. They enlisted. Although there was a draft during WWII, many men (and women) volunteered to serve.
Also during WWII, the government actual paid for the war. Now the government buys stuff essentially on credit. They sold war bonds to raise money. So what Cap was doing was crucial to the war effort.
When Bucky was reciting his name, rank and number we learn something; the number isn't random, and the first digits don't match for volunteers from New York City. Seems like Bucky was drafted, and just _told_ Steve that he volunteered.
Colette, I don't think they could've found a better guy to play the Red Skull..I'd seen him do scary evil in the Matrix Triology as "Agent Smith"--When I heard he got the role,I had to see this movie when it came out. I love the look of horror ya got when he took his "face" off!! And they did stick to a lot of Marvel History for this fllm, including Bucky's death.

Hey, Colette! Chronologically, this is the first MCU film excepting the two framing scenes set in 2011. I feel it's an overlooked gem that establishes so many future films and introduces the moral center of the Marvel Universe.
Much like in the film, Steve Rogers is a character plucked from a different era in Marvel's publishing history. In the 1940's, Marvel was known as Timely Comics and sought to produce a patriotic propaganda character to raise awareness of Nazi aggression in Europe. Writer Joe Simon and artist Jack Kirby came up with Captain America whose first issue in 1941 featured a cover that had Cap socking Hitler in the jaw! It was an immediate sensation and flew off the racks! Cap came with a triangular shield and a teen sidekick called Bucky but had the shield design changed to a circular shape in the second issue because of complaints of copying the triangular design of another company's patriotic character. A young staff writer called Stan Lee had Cap sling his shield as a trademark offensive maneuver in a text-only filler story in the third issue! As popular as the comic proved to be, it also drew criticism for its pro-war position as many Americans wanted to remain neutral in Europe's war. Angry protestors gathered outside Timely's offices and NYC Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia had to post police protection for the building. Simon and Kirby collaborated on the first ten issues. Decades later, when Lee and Kirby created the Marvel Universe in 1961, three characters were plucked from the Timely Golden Age and dropped into the Marvel Silver Age: the android Human Torch, Prince Namor of Atlantis and Captain America. The super-soldier was found by the Avengers in ice-bound suspended animation in the North Atlantic where he had disappeared thwarting an act of aerial terror at the end of World War II. The founding Avengers were Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, Wasp and Hulk but, after their discovery of Steve in the fourth issue, Cap became a mainstay of the team often leading them as Chairman.
Director Joe Johnston had experience with pulpy period earnestness with "The Rocketeer" and infuses this film with the charm of that one while also incorporating much of Cap's publishing history into the character's on-screen biography. The entire propaganda sequence brilliantly incorporates the Hitler punch and his triangular shield. His scrawny origin as a Depression-era kid from Brooklyn who likes to draw, his multiple attempts to enlist, his training under Colonel Chester Phillips at Camp Lehigh, Abraham Erskine's super-soldier experiment and his nemesis Red Skull are all very comic accurate. The cinematography has a desaturated sepia quality to it that evokes the past.
Marvel had a World War II-era comic called "Sergeant Fury and the Howling Commandos". Comic Nick Fury is a World War II veteran whose vigor has been maintained by a diluted form of the super-soldier serum called the Infinity Formula. The squad he led was a diverse group that consisted of bowler hat-wearing Boston Irish Timothy 'Dum Dum' Dugan, African-American Gabe Jones, New York Jew Izzy Cohen, Japanese-American Jim Morita, Italian-American Dino Manelli, Southerner Rob 'Rebel' Ralston, Brit Percival 'Pinky' Pinkerton, German defector Eric Koenig and greenhorn Johnny 'Junior' Juniper. They were occasionally aided by French Resistance fighter Jacques 'Frenchie' Dernier. Fury's team answered to General Samuel 'Happy Sam' Sawyer who had a stony disposition. Johnston notably includes James Montgomery Falsworth's Union Jack as part of the team! Union Jack was a British nobleman and costumed adventurer during World War I who came out of retirement to lend Cap a hand in World War II. Despite an incomplete roster, Johnston brings the Howling Commandos to life fighting side-by-side with Cap!
The cast is incredible! This was Chris Evan's second stab at superheroics and he was reluctant to put on the spandex again. However, Robert Downey, Jr. convinced him and the role of Steve Rogers aka Captain America fit like a glove. Sebastian Stan's brotherly love as James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes comes through as does Hayley Atwell's sympathy and fire as Peggy Carter. Stanley Tucci as Dr. Abraham Erskine, Tommy Lee Jones as Col. Chester Phillips, Dominic Cooper as young Howard Stark, Toby Jones as Dr. Arnim Zola and Hugo Weaving as Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull round out the cast. Lending support as the Howling Commandos are Neal McDonough as Dugan, Derek Luke as Jones, Kenneth Choi as Morita, Bruno Ricci as Dernier and J.J. Feild as Falsworth aka Union Jack. Richard Armitage of "The Hobbit" ensures the serum will never be replicated as Hydra assassin Heinz Kruger. Natalie Dormer and David Bradley of "Game of Thrones" pop up in small roles as a man-eating WAC and a grizzled Norwegian, respectively. William Hope of "Aliens" has a bit part as the SHIELD officer overseeing Cap's excavation and Laura Haddock makes her film debut as an autograph seeker. Naturally, Samuel L. Jackson shows up as Col. Nick Fury to put in his two-cents.
The screenplay brilliantly integrates Howard Stark, substitutes an Infinity Stone for the traditional Cap MacGuffin, the Cosmic Cube, links the Tesseract to Asgard, ages up Bucky and incorporates Peggy Carter from comic Cap's wartime flashbacks. Erskine's pep talk the night before the procedure is so crucial as to why Steve is a hero and his benefactor's wisdom echoes throughout the rest of Cap's life: "Whatever happens tomorrow, you must promise me one thing: that you will stay who you are; not a perfect soldier but a good man." Steve's tactical acumen is demonstrated by his unorthodox solution to the flagpole challenge which earns him a ride with Peggy and her admiration. It's reminiscent of Alexander's brilliantly direct solution of slicing through the Gordian Knot. Of course, Steve's inability to quit against impossible odds represented by his boast "I can do this all day" comes full-circle for an amazing payoff at the saga's conclusion! Finally, Steve's forlorn "I had a date" is so laden with unfulfilled promise and poignancy.
TRIVIA:
1. James Howlett aka Wolverine and Max Eisenhardt aka Magneto were to have cameos as a soldier and as a concentration camp prisoner, respectively, but the characters were owned by 20th-Century Fox and could not be used.
2. Hayley Atwell tentatively touching Steve's chest post-transformation was not scripted but was the actress' genuine awestruck reaction to Chris Evans' physique.
EASTER EGGS:
1. Encased in a glass chamber at the World Expo is Phineas Horton's Synthetic Man, the android Human Torch. This is one of the three Timely-era characters resurrected along with Namor and Cap for Silver Age Marvel Comics in the '60's.
2. Kenneth Choi plays Howling Commando Jim Morita's grandson as well when he appears as the Principal of Peter Parker's school in "Spider-Man: Homecoming".
3. Captain America autograph seeker Laura Haddock has been confirmed as Meredith Quill's grandmother since Haddock also played Meredith in "Guardians of the Galaxy". That would make her Peter Quill's great-grandmother.
CAMEO:
1. Stan Lee appears as a General at the Washington award ceremony where Cap is a no-show commenting on how he thought the super-soldier would be taller when he mistakes the panicked handler who rushes onstage for the Captain. Lol.
END-CREDIT SCENES:
1. The first end-credit scene is just an excerpt from "Avengers".
2. The second end-credit scene is a sizzle reel of "Avengers".
The next chronological stop in the MCU is Season 1 of the "Agent Carter" TV series.
I don't recall Max Eisenhardt being Magneto's real name, I thought it was Erik Lensherr.

They rode out the rest of the war in a mountain village where he fathered a daughter. They moved to a Soviet city afterwards but he ran afoul of the law using his powers in a money dispute with his boss. Word got out and the KGB torched his apartment without realizing his daughter was trapped within! He was restrained while he and Magda watched her burn. When he broke free, he slaughtered half the neighborhood and Magda fled from him in terror. He didn't know she was pregnant with the twins Pietro and Wanda. He adopted the identity of a dead Romani man named Erik Lehnsherr to search for Magda among the Gypsy community but never found her. She found her way to Mount Wundagore and gave birth to the twins under the care of the High Evolutionary, Herbert Edgar Wyndham. She abandoned the babies and fled. Wyndham placed the twins with a childless Gypsy couple named the Maximoffs.

You elected to assume I was commenting about myself, when I was attempting to note that some men, of smaller stature, may feel less confident about interacting with taller women, as often they may not be accorded the same respect from a woman, as to someone she actually has to look up to.
Making Cap look small at the start of the movie wasn't CGI. In short, they did it by digitally shrinking Evans, using Leander Deeny as a body double, and grafting Evans' performance on top of Deeny's.

Bucky was the scout that snuck around while all attention was paid to the Stars and Stripes.
In the comics, Bucky was the teen mascot at the army base where Rogers was trained, instead of the sergeant leaving for war. When the kids were grabbing the comics from the newsstand in the movie, teen Bucky had been edited off the cover. In Iron Man 2, Tony found an issue in Howard's briefcase. It was one of the original covers with teen Bucky wearing a domino mask saluting the audience [breaking the fourth wall] as he is introduced.

In case no one has said up to now, fondue is melted cheese, wine and bread.
You melt the cheese (something like Swiss cheese) add white wine, then dip a cube
of bread on a long fork into the cheese. It's tart and dry, not sweet in any way, shape, or form.
Stark flirts with every (single) woman. He reassures Steve just before they go "shopping" for shields. "it's just cheese and bread, my friend."

the actress who played peggy carter wan't supposed to touch steve chest after he came out of the chamber that put the serum in him , the actress was so shocked with how he looked since she only worked with the small actor who played small steve
The line "and the fuhrer digs for trinkets in the desert" is a reference to the film "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Joe Johnston, the director of this film, worked in the art department on that film earlier in his career.
The bit about Cap punching Hitler (both in the stage show and the comic books we see in the montage) are a reference to the very first issue of "Captain America" in 1941. Believe it or not, this was very controversial at the time, since the US had not joined the war at this point and there was a very large portion of Americans who wanted to stay out of it and did not want to antagonize Germany. Some of the threats were so serious that the comic's creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby had to have police protection for a while. Kirby died in 1994 but Simon lived just long enough to see the release of this film in 2011.

Johann Schmidt is known as the Red Skull, and he has been Captain America's archnemesis since his creation. He was a Nazi general who underwent the super soldier treatment, but the serum brought out the worst in him. In the comics, he suffers a disfigurement after this that gives him that red skull face (before, he wore a mask). He is the leader of HYDRA, a secret organization that seeks world domination, a counter to SHIELD (what the SSR Steve is working with is renamed to following WW2).

Howard Stark asked Peggy if she wanted to "fondue". Later Steve says to Peggy. "How do I know you and Stark haven't been fonduing?" Fondue is a Swiss melted cheese dish. Cap got inside the Hydra plane because the landing gear, which he was holding onto, retracted inside the main body of the plane, not into an isolated compartment as on a modern airplane.

The red guy is the Red Skull, a character from the comics who was a recurring nemesis for Cap. Hugo Weaving did a great job with his portrayal. Dr. Erskine was basically the same from the comics, and Steve's transformation was pretty much ripped from the comics. Also really enjoyed Stanley Tucci's performance as Erskine. In the comics, Bucky was a teen who discovered Cap's true identity and became his sidekick. Think Robin to Batman in DC. Not sure which came first, but I think it may have been Bucky. The skull with the tentacles is the symbol for the terrorist organization Hydra. They will figure prominently in later MCU movies and TV.
Just a tidbit fact, the actress who plays the shopkeeper that fronts the lab portrayed Aunt May in the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies.

There wasn't much of a draft, (forced to go and fight at 18 yr old) until the last part of WWII.
That's when men and women were needed to fill in the gaps of the fighting machine. Supply, paperwork, loading and shipping were needed.
And yes, the never ending need for replacements in the front line.
Most men volunteered up until the last year of WWII, 1945.
Most of the Vietnam war was drafting 18 yr old teenage males who didn't have rich families, and a collage future.
That time period in American history really sucked. I know..........I was a couple years away from being drafted.

The secret to how they made Chris look small and skinny is they placed his head on another actor's body via CGI. It's amazing what can be achieved with a couple green screen suits and a computer isn't it?

THE OLD GUY was nearly around when this film was set. and his buddy in comics cocreated cap back in 1939. great story, it could be a movie itself. esp. the cigar smoking artist that brought most of marvel to life, jack "king" kirby. he was the king of comics, just as Elvis was king, only more so.
Stan was around. He was even drafted into the army, and still wrote comics and mailed the stories back to the NYC offices. He was the office assistant when Kirby and Simon created Cap. Jack Kirby, king of comics, was also a boxer. If you want to see some of Kirby's story in his later years, check out the movie Argo about the rescue attempt during the Iran Embassy Hostage Crisis.

youre missing Incredible Hulk (2008) that should of been before Thor also so theres no confusion the actor playing the Incredible Hulk (Edward Norton) was recast to actor Mark Ruffalo in Avengers but he plays the same character Bruce Banner/Hulk kinda like how they recast James Rhodes "Rhodey" aka WarMachine in Ironman and Ironman 2
Nick fury is not the matrix guy btw, the actor who plays Nick Fury is Samual L. Jackson and Morpheus (the matrix guy) is played by Laurence Fishburne.
Hugo Weaving, who played the Red Skull, played Agent Smith in The Matrix. There is a connection to The Matrix, just not the one she thought. Also Elrond in The Lord of the Rings movies.
The old guy that keeps showing up is Stan Lee. Him (who died in 2018), Jack Kirby (who died in 1994) and Steve Ditko (who died in 2018) are the fathers of the most famous Marvel Characters.
There are throwback calls. Captain America being in tights was what he looked like in his first years in the comics (1939-60s). There will be some with characters that you’ll see in the future too
Something no one else comments on though is the guy in the grey suit sitting _next_ to Stan Lee in that shot. He's Reb Brown, who played Captain America in a TV movie in 1979.

Both Superman and Captain America were created by sons of Jewish immigrants who were symbols of how they became the melting pot of this country. In fact Jerry Siegel, co-creator of Superman had to deal with his father’s murder while still in high school, which no doubt played a big influence on him creating Superman. While Stan Lee wrote many of Cap’s adventures, Cap was created by writer Joe Simon and Stan’s long time partner in crime, Jack “King” Kirby, whom Stan both met while interning at Timely Comics. (Later renamed Marvel) That comic you saw been sold during the musical montage was the actual cover of Cap’s very first issue drawn by Kirby. Believe it or not Simon and Kirby actually got death threats from American Nazi sympathizers to the point that they would hold demonstrations outside of the office of Timely comics. This made Simon and Kirby almost cancel the character until they got a call from NY mayor Fierro Laguardia who said to them, “You boys over there are doin a good job! The city of New York will see that no harm will come to you!” Sadly Kirby passed away in 1997 and Joe Simon in 2011. But he did get to see the first CA movie and his kids say that his favorite part was when Steve was getting beat up in the alley and then grabs the trash can lid using it as a shield.

SLJ was guaranteed the role as Marvel launched The Ultimates comic line post 2001 and used his likeness for Colonel Nicholas Fury without permission. Marvel had no defense, no leverage. He could have reamed them for damages in court. In exchange, he was literally guaranteed that only he could be cast as Fury if the character was used in television or movies.
He has kept his word. MCU movies and Agents Of SHIELD. It is all connected.

Captain America film was not perfect but I love watching the film so I believe that MCU series will continue to grow in cinemas in years to come.
The cheesy costume was more comic book accurate, but the movie makers have known for a long time that those ultra colorful costumes that are great on the paper of a comic book look really over the top in real life to the viewer. You should look at a few iterations of Captain America on Google of the comic book version. His suit is very similar. They did the same thing with the X-Men, downgrading their suits to black in the original movie, and never actually giving them their colorful suits. I know a lot of people who have seen the X-Men and Wolverine movies who don't/didn't recognize the comic book version of Wolverine in costume. My sister, just the other day, saw a picture of him for the first time and didn't know who it was.
Iron Man is about the only one that stays comic book accurate with his red and gold look.
I like that they've used comic accurate costumes in Wandavision and Loki though :)

Samual Jackson was not in The Matrix. Lawerence Fishburn was however. Might want to straighten that one out.

I never see reactors catch onto the parallels of the War Bond Captain America movie scenes and the breakout scenes of Cap and the Howling Commandos.

Peggy has more adventures coming. First, there was a TV show on ABC for 2 seasons called "Agent Carter" that takes place in the late 1940's and 1950's, but Steve is frozen during that time. There will be other appearances, but she did not get to sleep for 70 years. Stay tuned!
