I’ve started really looking forward to this show. Into the FUZZ now bro
Doom and Stoner metal is life
I live in London and I have been to the Rise Above Records shop featured in your thumbnail. It’s in the North London suburb of Highgate, not far from Highgate underground station.
The shop is small but cosy, not as big as your NY stores for sure. But they do have the Vinyl and CD stock that you would expect. I see they have stock out back behind the counter too, so its one of those stores where you could go in with a list and ask if they have it but not on display on the racks.
i have a great cd on Rise Above by circulus called "Clocks are like people."😋 Just listened to a sample of Orange Goblin album, "Time Travellin' Blues", sounds like Hawkwind a bit, which to me is a good omen.
Late to this, but Rise Above is a brilliant label. One time, I ordered a Rise Above t shirt and it was out of stock for a while. Lee phoned my house, sadly, I was at work at the time, but he spoke to my wife and apologised for the delay. When the shirt finally arrived, he'd included a promo copy of Unearthly Trance's In The Red album to apologise for the wait.
I went to the Rise Above 20th Anniversary gig in London in 2008 and saw some great bands: Witchsorrow opened and were followed by Serpentcult, Litmus, Moss, Diagonal, Gentlemen's Pistols, Taint, Grand Magus and headliners Electric Wizard. What a day.
I have seen Orange Goblin about 7 or 8 times and they are one of the best live bands going. Every gig I've ever seen by them has ended with huge grins and drunken staggers home.
I keep adding to this as I listen/watch. If you like With The Dead, try another Lee Dorrian 'supergroup'; Teeth Of Lions, Rule The Divine. They only made one album (Rampton - named after an infamous asylum in the UK) and features with Lee, Justin Greaves (ex Iron Monkey, now with Crippled Black Phoenix) and Steven and Greg from SunnO))).
Penance-The Road Less Travelled
This.
Witchskull!! Cool find. Vedder going metal. Interesting way of putting the vocals.
All hails to Lee Dorian!!! Napalm, Cathedral, WithTheDead, fucken Septic Tank plus his championing of lost HEAVY like Bang etc etc and new heavy Wizard, Blood Ceremony, Sheavy etc etc etc
My favorite 5 release
Cathedral - In Memoriam Rise 008
Serpentcult - Weight of Light Rise 112
Blood Ceremony - Old Ways Remains
Death Penalty - S/T
Octopus - Supernatural Alliance
Have not been around on SoT, sorry, but have been listening to MUCH MUSIC. Took notes on this episode and looking forward to another Deep Dive into another label
Troubled Horse is great! Formed by former members of another great band Witchcraft!
Doesn't Troubled Horse have members of Witchcraft? I thought I read that once...but I'm not sure.
Also love the sHEAVY albums Electric Sleep and Celestial Hifi
The first Revelation album, 'Salvation's Answer', is an amazing piece of Maryland Doom!
Yeah baby
@@tylermoulton7294 Oh Yes, that, the Dark Passages comp and the Penance LP was a great introduction for the label and Doom Metal. Still play them frequently!
Great job Pete and Karen 🤘😎🤘 i'm learning so much in these shows
Thanks for this Karen and Pete. I like all the shows on SOT but this is my new favorite. I would also like to suggest an Italian band I know you will love, UFOMAMUT. All albums are good but I recommend 8 as it has some nice psych vibes around all the doomy stoner riffs.
Really great artists at Rise Above Records. Karen and Pete I look forward to catching replay. I got live music to attend with seeing so when I get back to hear what was said and see the chat gallery. TC and great evening friends.
Jon/. Enjoy 👍💯
are u seeing taylor swift, is that why u won't tell us?
@@independenceltd. Not even close. Did see a female guitarist who kicked serious hard rock playing. Great in classic rock Killer originals as multi talent to had been booked with Tom Petty/Alanis Morrisette. and others and in her opening with drummer and bass and opening numbers and killer singing she was shredding and passages I heard in soloing of Rainbow Blackmore and more in her instrumental parts. She did couple of Neil Young songs Ohio and Rockin In The Free World that were crushing even Neil Young would be envious of how killer she shredded.. Every track except of a couple solo songs just her which were ballad likes she did well there too. 3 piece band Hannah Wicklund. She was crushing shredding and out of this world. No Taylor Swift is not even close to her. I dislike Taylor anyway. Nice try Donald. Be well.
@@thedarkwizardroom thank you for finally mentioning her name. i looked her up. some new stuff sounds pathetically drivelish but some of the older stuff was quite impressive. i hope she hasn't sold her soul to the devil for fame.
@@independenceltd. I met her after the show she was sweet. Delightful person.
I have the first Age of Taurus album really great reach for it often. Cheers from The Captain
A fabulous addition to the sea of tranquility cannon ! Right up my street. Great stuff. Thanks folks
Cloudsley shovell are all great guys....ive hung out with them a few times, great people.
witchscull are soooooooo good.
Karen LaPrez in the "fuzzosphere".
Pete reviewed those Church of Misery's Born Under a Mad Sign and Witchskull's The Serpent Tide on same day- which made it a great day as those are easily 2 of my fave albums of this year.
Right on!
I have bought several Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats albums from Rise Above Records.
Excellent catalog
Killer label, Lee is has made something special here
The Dark Passages compilation did more to make people aware of doom than any other release. An infinitely important album.
Also, Taint - Secrets and Lies is a masterpiece.
Killer show gave me a few more to check out. The rise above origin story was cool. I had a question about that but forgot already.
I like some of the Proggier stuff the label has released. My Top 5 Rise Above releases are 1. Astra - The Weirding, 2. Purson - The Circle & The Blue Door, 3. Diagonal - S/T, 4. Zoltan - Tombs Of The Blind Dead, 5. Capricorns - River Bear Your Bones.. PETE if you ever come across the pond and visit London Lee has opened a Rise Above Records shop there.
I really like Lucifer, but if you like The Oath you should also check out Maggot Heart, The Oath's guitarist Linnéa Olsson's somewhat Voivod-inspired post-punk/rock band! They have a new album coming out this autumn, but also multiple releases already. Check out f.ex. Roses, Mercy Machine, No Song (one of my absolute favourite songs of 2021), Lost Boys, or the new single Looking Back at You (or maybe just this session: ua-cam.com/video/sYZBLSxPz_I/v-deo.html). I'm waiting for a new European tour, but they have a US tour lined up that kicks off at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC on October 17th for you to check out, Karen and Pete!
Great show. I think The Gates of Slumber are working on new stuff Pete. I'm friends with Karl on facebook and he had some rehearsal footage a while back.
I think so too. Assume the band is him and the two guys from Apostle of Solitude these days
One of my favorite labels ever 🤘💜
Orange Goblin great, lots of groove for sure! Knew some earlier stuff (Saruman's Wish got me into them). From the latest album "Ale House Braves" is a must listen. It kicks ass!
Some favourites not particulaly mentioned here
Purson - The Circle and the Blue Door
Angel Witch - As Above so Below
Death Penalty - Death Penalty
Sheavy - The Electric Sleep
Astra - The Weirding
Horisont - Time Warriors
Bangers every one of them!
I shall look forward to the `Blood Ceremony` ranking video.
Hi Pete
Saw orange goblin in 2013 at Sheffield corporation with admiral sir cloudesley shovel as support
That was a loud night. 2 great bands live
Hey guys, love the show. I'm one of those guys who are turned off by band names like: Lucifer, I Hate God, Satan etc... It took me a long time to listen to Opeth, now Opeth is one of my favorite bands. Anyway, I'm going to give Lucifer an honest listen. It's interesting when a Christain band or someone of faith is mentioned, some people on SOT turn their noses up and even make fun of them, never could understand that. Anway, whether it be Christain or non Christain good music is good music. I LOVE the fuzz.
Witchcraft and Graveyard sprouted out of a band called Norskenn check out the demos on youtube and also Witchcraft - Black Metal is like an homage to Townes Van Zandt i think it's great Magnus Pelander is a tremendous song writer !! also really love the Legend and Nucleus albums they really grow on ya over time full of catchy memorable hooks
Great show. Some other great labels for this kind of music are Man's Ruin, Small Stone and Tee Pee.
I'm blown away with all the stoner/doom coverage lately! Thank you!
I came here after Pete picked Witchskull- The Serpent Tide as his #5 album of the year.
Great job Karen and Pete! Love the picks. Big fan of early Orange Goblin. Pretty sure that The Gates Of Slumber will be recording in September.
Karen always killing’ it. My favourite!
Absolutely, she is awesome.
The Road of Bones, by IQ., best serial killer album ever.
I can't wait for the episode on Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats
Lucifer really liked Karens'pick!!!
Whenever I feel straight metal is all too samey, I go swimming in the sea of fuzz.
The vinyl hunters just uplaoded a video of Lee Dorions record store.
Saw Astra, Purson and Hidden Masters on a Rise Above tour in 2013. All excellent and some a bit fuzzy! The label is a badge of quality.
the older stuff is just as good as the new stuff Killer bass deep and loud
Wings of Steel just came out with a great album
Love Admiral Sir whatever the rest of the name is.
Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell.
I looked it up. Never heard of them.
I figured many of my picks wouldn't be mentioned, but, Troubled Horse! Yeah Pete! I am obsessed with Troubled Horse. I really hope they have a third album in the works, but they've been dead quiet, aside from doing occasional shows. Props for the Age of Taurus and The Oath picks too. I like Blood Ceremony more than Lucifer, but I dig 'em. Lucifer V coming out this year, you can hear a preview on YT with "A Coffin Has No Silver Lining." That TV show Lucifer didn't seem to be held back by it's name. Century Media is a good label -- Spirit Adrift are having a good experience with 'em so far.
Agreed on Witchcraft's last album -- documentation of Magnus' meltdown. I know they're back to playing shows so hopefully will be back on track. FYI Both Magnus and Graveyard's Joakim Nilsson and Rikard Edlund were in a band together called Norrsken from 1995-00. Drummer Kristoffer Sjödahl also went on to form Dead Man, who released two amazing albums in 2006 & 08.
Lee Dorian was the curator at Roadburn in 2016 and I got to see With the Dead and Blood Ceremony. Aside from Electric Wizard, Blood Ceremony and Uncle Acid, these are my favorite Rise Above albums:
Hidden Masters - Of This & Other Worlds (2013)
Troubled Horse - Step Inside (2012)
Witchcraft - The Alchemist (2007)
Purson - The Circle And The Blue Door (2013)
Troubled Horse - Revolution On Repeat (2017)
The Oath - The Oath (2014)
SerpentCult - Weight Of Light (2008)
The Gates Of Slumber - Hymns Of Blood And Thunder (2009)
Age Of Taurus - Desperate Souls Of Tortured Times (2013)
Horisont - Second Assault (2012)
More: Witchskull, Noctum, Death Penalty, sHEAVY, Greenleaf, Twin Temple, Galley Beggar, Beastmaker, Saturn. I like Admiral Sir Cloudsley Shovell too.
I brought Twin Temple to Pete's attention this weekend. He hated it....but I think they have great charm.
@@Jamie.Laszlo Maybe not top tier, but I enjoyed the R&B/Soul/Garage/Satanic Doo-Wop! Purson is great psych noir, and Hidden Masters are hugely underrated/neglected, partly because they broke up before really touring. But man, there's live footage on YT that's amazing -- there's some Cream style alchemy happening.
I really dig 666Mr.Doom UA-cam channel there's a lot of Fuzz heavy bands on there. One band I've gone head over heels for is this duo from Russia called Lunar Funeral. They are AWESOME. They have that David Lynch Pink Room kind of vibes..... though not DOOM I must say check out some of David Lynch's Crazy Clown Time album.... its just cool. For the record David Lynch is now one of my favorite guitarist because he's not a musician technically, he's cool.
Great episode! I made a great Spotify playlist from Rise Above Records artists. Just called it Rise Above Records - Favs. Cheated and included a few tunes after they moved to another label:
1. Capricorns
2. Antisect
3. Iron Man
4. Blood Ceremony
5. Lucifer
6. Uncle Acid
7. Orange Goblin
8. Electric Wizard
9. Grand Magus
10. Church of Misery
11. Witchskull
The Gates Of Slumber are working on new work. Their older work is more epic doom instead of the later Saint Vitus traditional doom metal. Either album is great and if you haven't checked out their other work, you definitely should. Think Manilla Road mixed with Vitus and Sabbath.
Really like the Troubled Horse albums, hope that they're not defunct. I think of them as 'Occult Rock' rightly or wrongly.
You know when a new character is introduced to an established show and it kinda ruins it? Everyone has their own examples, I'm sure. One that springs to my mind is Scrappy Doo. Never quite got over that.
Anyway, Karen's introduction to the SoT family is basically the exact opposite of that.
Great series and great episode. Hadn’t heard of Witchskull before. Checked them out now and they sounded good. Bought their albums.
Thanks for another great show, always looking forward to it. You`re covering so much of the stuff I`m into. Keep them coming.
Enjoyed this dive into a particular label and will be listening to some of these bands. Already a fan of the band Lucifer thanks to watching SoT for more than three years and this show is scratching the itch Pete recently started for me on the doom/stoner/psych. Thanks, Pete and Karen, for your time in making this video.
Nice to see Orange Goblin being mentioned on the show. Great call Karen🤘🤘🤘
Yeah man, Church Of Misery is total Doom rad badass!
i think i listened to the Astra and Horisont records the most . Great label logo.
Another great show. I learn so much from these videos. Thanks.
Great show folks
Witchcraft
😄👍
Nebula -Atomic Ritual is a classic
