  • Hey everyone, I thought while we are still just after this amazing hoar frost we've been a part of over the last week, I'd put up a few of the shots of these incredible winter scenes. Taken around the Mackenzie Basin In New Zealand's South Island.
    I'm very far behind real time with our regular vlogs, but while this is still fresh in our minds, lets take a look now.

    Winter Wonderland. Drones are great. You have been so blessed to capture the beauty of a Kiwi winter. Sooooo much better than looking at Ardern's face. Thanks mate for sharing and rekindling memories of old.

      @@lettyelspeth lol... What makes it not as cold is the lack of wind. Wind chill is the killer it's amazing waking up to everything frozen, water, ponds lakes, you'll see all that in the longer vlog

      @@leopardsgowild wind definitely adds extra cold! Layering is key 🔑 and heating in the van. Looking forward to seeing more of the winter wonderland soon!

      Yea, we didn't really get the blue sky, which is awesome when it breaks through... Amazingly I took those last drone shots, went back to the caravan, we packed up and left and the whole lot was gone, minus some pine trees that still had some on the south side of the tree, pretty incredible

    Lovely. Just home from work and a new thing of beauty to watch before getting dinner started.
    I’ve loved finding your vlogs (only recently while recovering from COVID) and have found some of the videos of places I’ve never been in my own country have brought me to tears they are so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your family and your journey.

    Wow beautiful view, thank you. Plus there have been some outdoor curling games because the ponds have frozen…we heard the interview on RNZ. Meanwhile in the North Island we get more rain.

      Thanks, a nice blazing fire sounds awesome. We've just plugged into a powered site for the first time in 3 weeks, it's nice to have the electric heater running, all the electric sockets powered, and there are no limits to the hot showers... Going to miss that level of cold though, into Central Otago we go and maybe we'll find some snow and big frosts, only half way through winter.

    My ex and l used to do the milkrun Timaru to Twizel 75 / 88 and had many hoar frosts like this ,have pitures of it back then enjoy your stay

      Yea that was really cool to see, still pretty thin on the edges, but skimming rocks across was fun, listening to that noise the ice makes.

      I tell ya what, they have been pretty awesome... You'll see when I get to the VLOG of camping in this, I was out wondering around in these conditions all day, was so epic having an awesome jacket.

      We actually went to Geraldine, Tekapo, Twizel, then Aoraki Mt cook, before the hoar frost, videos are miles behind. So glad we got this though.

      @@leopardsgowild no, as close to the lake as I am the only tome we get any fog is when the lake is significantly warmer than the air or vise versa and inland they get fog but when it gets cold it just snows lol

      It's a very awesome winter when it looks like this, currently in an inversion layer sitting at 3 degrees, so boring

    A little background.
    Hoar comes from old English meaning old.
    Hoar frost causes trees, and such, to appear to be growing long white hair. Just like an old person. 🤓👍

      interesting, it definitely transforms the landscape. I couldn't imagine a hoar frost that went on for weeks apparently in the 80's they had one that went for over 40 days in Twizel.

      cold, but it's worth it when it looks like this... Pretty depressing after it melted and then it's just fogged in and damp and muddy.

    No good for solar panel recharging of the house battery. Luckily, you have a generator. Great country in the Mackenzie Basin.

      Awesome spot alright, hopeless for solar in these conditions not much better even with the generator, batteries got so cold, could barely charge and barely hold charge, was a real battle.

      Yes they do get gritted I feel the accidents are happening early in the morning when the roads are the most frozen

      @@tlb2970 well this is becoming a very rare event use to occur most of winter, in the 1980s there was a hoar frost which lasted over 40 days, we've had 4 days of this for winter 2024

      @@tlb2970 first I've heard. Talk to anyone farming for more than 10 - 15 years they'll tell ya winters are way warmer, we talked a guy whose been farming up at lake heron his whole life he said they used to ride horses across that lake in winter, doesn't even freeze over now.
