I saw a very interesting youtube video on the UK X-trail website a couple of years ago of a guy in Latvia (I think) who tried to show how the X-trail 4wd system worked. For want of a better way of describing what he did.....He had in effect connected a volt meter to the rear diff magnetic clutch to show how much voltage was applied to the clutch inside the rear diff whilst driving. He put the T30 in auto mode and then drove about filming the voltmeter. What it showed was the voltage applied to the clutch increased with greater throttle openings, so the car wasn't a 50/50 constant when in auto mode, it was a totally variable force applied to the rear drive clutch. So in effect, low throttle openings, low amonut of rear wheel drive, full throttle openings, full force applied to the rear drive and maximum drive from the rear wheels. I think....... I remember reading on the Nissan Wikipedia that the T30 drive is more like 58% front 42% rear drive to perfectly match the vehicles stock weights front and rear. Not sure of those numbers but about those lets say.... if all this is accurate?? then the comments of rear wheels engage when it senses fronts spinning wouldn't be completely accurate would it? it seems the rear wheels are always engaged in auto mode, they don't have to wait until they sense slippage, they are always driving. The amount of drive is proportional to the throttle opening. This could be why the X-trail is rated better offroad than other soft roaders who DO have to wait for front wheels losing traction before the rears engage which... is normally too late! if I'm talking rubbish, ignore it! :-) GREAT channel, great work you do, Love watchign your vids, Martyn UK.
PS I run my 2003 T30 2.0 petrol on full mud tyres half of the year and it feels very nervous in front wheel drive only mode, switch to auto mode and it becomes very stable all the time. I.E Auto 4wd mode is running the rears all the time and the car feels far more confident which might? back up the above.... it really does feel utterly planted and secure in Auto mode on full muds.
Thanks for your input mate. Would be interesting to see that video. If the rear wheels are always engaged when in auto mode, then that does make a huge difference offroad rather than waiting for the front to slip.
Link above to the video its worth watching and understanding, its an ammeter he rigged up. 2.8 amps is full drive to the rear wheels, so the meter he is fliming is an ammeter showing how much current is applied from 0 to 2.8 amps which is the full amount.

Yes that is normal. Wheel with least resistance on an axle will spin. Assuming the vehicle is not hung up yet, what you want to do is clear as much sand in front of all 4 wheels then pack something under each of the wheel that was spinning.
Does the 4wd lock switch work from stationary or moving like in auto mode? When does the 4wd lock light come on or stay on? Thanks for the demo explanation
4wd lock needs to be selected when vehicle is stationary. If you switch it while vehicle is more then 40kph it reverts to auto. 4wd Lock light will stay on as long as the switch is set to lock however it doesnt necessarily mean it is in lock mode as it is designed to revert to auto if above 40kph or if trans oil is overheated.
