in the song 'not today' he tells -blurryface not today, by saying,"don't you test me though, just because I play the piano, dosent mean Im not willing to take u down" after he says that, I find it funny, how he says"Im sorry" right after, like he feels he can't tell -blurryface what to do, leading him to apologize.

I dont think the songs are THAT religious, though I could definitely understand why you would think that. These are MY meanings of the songs, and what I choose to believe they're about :3 Heavydirtysoul- Lyrics like "This is not rap, this is not hip-hop, just another attempt to make the voices stop" and "Mindless zombies walkin around with a limp and a hunch, sayin stuff like 'you only live once' (i'll get into second verse later)" make me believe he's talking about how his songs are about... well, depressing things, and it takes time to learn the message of a Twenty One Pilots song. They have their own style! As for the second verse, he's talking about how thrown around phrases like "yolo" are. Agreeing with "yolo" in the next lyric, but giving a deeper meaning to it in the same sentence. Stressed Out- As you said, its about wishing you didn't have so much pressure on you, and that you just want to be a kid again, when life was pretty much stress free. Ride- Again, like you said Tear in my Heart- Of course its about his wife, Jenna (though some people choose to believe its about Josh as a joke). It talks about how she's a "tear in his heart". True love hurts, that's how he know's she's the one. Fairly Local- I had a different meaning before, but with your explanation, I agree with you! How Tyler and Josh were just like you (the clique) and they were able to overcome, and the clique will too (I included Josh because Josh has extreme anxiety and is able to overcome it on stage). Lane Boy- Again, like you said, won't go into details because you just need to watch the video. The Judge- When he is talking about "the judge", I think he's more talking about the media. A lot of the media insults TØP for being too mainstream/emo. When Tyler says "set me free", he's more talking about how he wants them to let it go, and to just not listen to his music. Polarize- Same with Lane Boy, just watch the video because I agree WDBWOTV- The song switches messages for me, the first verse talking about how the media is always lying to you, and to pay attention to real life. The hook and chorus are more about a close friend, either Josh or Jenna or somebody else. The second verse kinda switches back, saying "what if my dream does not happen, would I just change what I told my friends" and the lyrics after suggest as well. He doesnt WANT to pay attention to how big or small the media says Twenty One Pilots is, because he has learned to kill his dreams of becoming successful, in case such thing needed to happen. Hometown- I believe it is about Columbus, Ohio, personally. When he says "there's no sun", he's talking about how there is no light shed on the beauty of Columbus, Ohio, and that you can honestly make it anywhere. Not Today- This one (and Goner) are about Blurryface himself. Tyler wanting to fight back against Blurryface, and just saying "no" Goner- Goner is his way of saying "you think you understand, but you don't" TO Blurryface. The hook "and so I'm weak, and beaten down, I'll slip away into the sound. The ghost of you is close to me. I'm inside out, you're underneath." Tyler wants Blurryface gone, but instead chooses to use Blurryface to help him, in the sense that Tyler always wants to get better. Blurryface, with the slight insecurities, helps Tyler evolve his music. Instead of "conquering" Blurryface, Tyler accepts him. As for who Blurryface is, Tyler has repeated multiple times that Blurryface is a character that represents insecurities. The blurry neck, Tyler explains, is how when you go on stage, how your throat feels like it gets clogged because you're nervous of how the show will go. The black hands, as Tyler says, his how he is insecure about anything he makes with his hands. Including how he writes his songs, and plays the piano and ukulele.

Pandii i agree with all except The Judge. i think it's what tyler was thinking when he wanted to die and when he was suicidal. basically the judge is the devil or whoever is choosing who goes to hell and he is asking them to set him free from earth and send him to hell. "i know my souls freezing, hells hot for good reason so please pick me" he's saying that his soul is freezing on earth and that's okay because hell is warmer.

all of these explanations are how i thought about the album at first and everyone told me i was wrong but its so good hearing someone agree with me. i dont think people realize how much tyler's faith is in his music and it bothers me. but its good to watch someone who agrees with the fact that tyler's faith is instrumental in his music

I believe that in "The judge" while he is talking about Blurryface he is talking about Satan and kind of highlighting the similarities between both as they're "the leader of the bad guys" and I think that makes the song so awesome and deep. Also, in "message man" I always thought he was talking about Jesus as he carries the message that God is alive.
The Pop Song Professor , in behind the scenes of tare in my hart.. tyler explained that "tare in my hart" is about how some one you love can "take that and crush it at any moment" meaning if jenna really wanted she could crush tyler's hart and hurt him even more... but in some twisted thare relationship works out because jenna understands what tyler's been through in the past
I think that was meant more as a joke / easter egg, not because the song is about Josh. I'm pretty sure I saw a tweet from Tyler once where he said he was supposed to just be shouting something else but when he was recording Josh was outside the soundproof glass and couldn't hear him so he shouted Josh's name.
I hear something different when I listen to Doubt. I hear Blurryface telling Tyler, "Don't forget about me." Then I hear Tyler replying, "Even when I doubt you, I'm no good without you," because in a sick way, Tyler needs Blurryface.
Tyler makes it clear that Blurryface creates many insecurities for him so why would he doubt Bluryface after all the negative impact it has created on him. He is talking about God "even when I doubt you, I'm no good without out you". because he is a Christian.
All these deeper meanings in their lyrics is what pulled me in and why I love them. I honestly thought that “Lane Boy” would’ve been about how the older generations, specifically the Baby Boomers, try to stick to their old roots and way of life, as well as Generation Z’s defiance of the Boomers forcing their lifestyle upon Gen Z. i.e. “they say stay in your lane boy, but we go where we want to/will they be alive tomorrow”. That also points out how the Baby Boomer generation is on the brink of ending soon, and how Generation Z will soon be out of their grasp.
Thanks for the video! I've enjoyed it. I saw his lyrics in the same light except for "Not Today". Tyler has a song on Vessel "Ode to Sleep" where he admits his fear of being associated with God (like Peter's) denial. In Ode he states to his fans, "I'm afraid to tell you who I adore. Won't tell you who I'm singing towards. Metaphorically, I'm a whore and that's denial #4." "Not Today" to me is again his fear of his musical calling. Or possibly the tug of war between fame and faith. The entire song is a conversation between him and God who has "heard" his "voice". A key in the dialog is the change in between hook 1 and 2. First, he is rejecting his call, "You are out of my mind. You aren't seeing my side. You waste all this time trying to get to me but you are out of my mind." The. The second bridge after he calls God out saying, "Just because I play the piano doesn't mean I, I'm not willing to take you down." And immediately Tyler regrets what he said and says, "I'm sorry." Then comes full circle on the second bridge and admits he cannot out run God. "I, I'm out of my mind. I'm not seeing things right. I waste all this time trying to run from you but I, I'm out of my mind." Even looking at Not Today as Tyler running from God brings it back to illuminate Polarize in a similar light. What or who is he denying? I believe it is God. His religion coupled with his state of mind makes him fear those demons in the night will find out who holds his devotion. I could be off the mark a bit. Not today resonates with me quite a bit though because I share his feeling of being called but doubting whether or not I could be any benefit to this world beyond my 4 walls. Though, I don't play the piano :) I don't even understand why I'm listening to Twenty One Pilots. I'm 40 and way to old to be jumping at concerts with the Clique but here I am haunted by the message. Does that even make sense?
Hey, so I really love Blurryface as an album and as a concept and I really loved your explanation of the songs and for the most part, I agreed with most of it; however, when you talked about 'Doubt', that's kind of where my interpretation of the song differs (and that's the beauty of music, that there isn't one set meaning behind a song, and everyone can view it differently). You say that Tyler's signing to God to not forget him, but I personally feel that it's more about him singing towards Blurryface as a character, that he feels he can't be creative without him because he draws on his insecurities and anxities to make music and that even though he wants to overcome him, he isn't sure what kind of person he would be if that were to ever happen, but yeah that was about it!
Definitely, music is all down to interpration and I don't think it'd be that interesting if top just came out and said what all of their songs actually mean. I mean, I think Doubt is him addressing Blurryface because as a concept, Blurryface is the antagonist of the entire album and there's several times where Tyler speaks to him directly, because at the end in 'Goner', he's asking for help in defeating him because he is aware that his insecurities and anxieties are not who he is, and he can overcome it, or at least overcome it for the moment, but that's just the way I see it, and the way I relate to it (and I also really love talking about the meaning of top's music haha).

i could be totaly wrong but what if doubt has double meaning?? let me explain my point of view. so until the whole dema story was out i tought it was about him asking God not to forget about him and stuff cause hes no one without him. but now after listening the song i noticed he referes the bishops, so i tried to interpert this in another way. what if this song is about clancys fear and anxiety because if he doesnt know if he'll be able to leave dema? and maybe theres someone in there he loves thats gonna escape with him (notice the part where he says "Hope you haven't left without me Hope you haven't left without me, please)and since it seams clancy is retinking it or maybe doubting it he maybe getting anxiety and starting to doubt if the person will escape with him?? or maybe that person already escaped, and he's asking them not to forget abou him. idk just a though, idk if its right or if i've made any mistakes (if so please correct me) and yeah i think thats it, sorry if its a bit confusing (sorry about my english, im portuguese sooooo)
Also for the song, "We Don't Believe Whats On TV" it is about Jenna. Theres a interview where Tyler is playing super smash bros with the interviewer and he talks about the song. He mentions the song and comments on how everyone thinks its about Josh. He continues on saying its not about Josh and jokingly says how he can look at Josh while hes performing song when Jenna is not there. So that almost confirms that its about Jenna. I agree with Isabel. In Not Today, Tyler's arguing with God, saying he wants to stay comfortable at home in the dark with the curtains drawn. He wants God to stay out of his mind. He thinks the world is better off without him. But God's like, "get your butt out there and do my will and sing (make a noise/sound) and transform the world" - God's the one who tears the curtains down. And well, if u read the Bible, God is all about tearing curtains 😜 (I think this song goes well as a companion to Ode to Sleep, which is also an argument with God about God's plans for Tyler. And notice both songs say "I'm sorry" in them.)
Yeah, I always thought that it was Tyler talking to God, mostly because of the part where he says "Don't you test me now... I'm sorry." Like, why would he say I'm sorry to Blurryface. But the explanation in the video is really good also, and makes a lot of sense.
Theory: The whole album was made by blurryface. As blurryface is the name of the album and also he had paint on his hands and neck. Where as in the trench album it’s Tyler’s perspective as he doesn’t have the paint. He’s fighting against Dema and the bishops.

I want to also add (I don't think you said it?) that the implication is that Tyler defeats or is starting to win against Blurryface by the end of the album. With Heavydirtysoul and Stressed Out, Tyler's admitting he's lost and the various songs explore why. With Goner, Tyler's fighting back. And though he's "weak & beaten down," he gets closer to God (the ghost of you) and wants to stay there. The imagery the band uses for Goner in concerts & on T-shirts (the white doves/Holy Spirit overtaking the red one/Blurryface) echo this idea. I think it's kind of a story arc of the album.

It's not." and afterwards he laughs, so that's pretty much confirmation that he's indeed not talking about Josh in the song, so now we know that he's either talking about Jenna or his fans.
Hey man, love watching your Twenty One Pilots videos! I wanted to rattle off my ideas about how I think all of their albums are connected by common truths or ideas (I'm not sure if these are the words I'm looking for). Like how night is always portrayed as the time where some of our more unpleasant thoughts tend to creep out and give us trouble. I have noticed that there seems to be similar ideas in the self-titled album and Blurryface. For instance: in A Car, A Torch, A Death, Tyler says how he "begins to envy the headlights driving south." And how he wants to fall out of that moving car. In The Judge, he talks about leaving a house, and when he''s heading down this route he thinks he's going south. I've always taken that to mean that to him; " South" is a positive direction. It makes sense too considering their song Polarize talks about "separating them, splitting them up from wrong and right." There are two poles; North and South. It also seems like some of the songs in these two albums challenge each other. Two songs that come to mind are Air Catcher and Ride. Ride is a negative perspective of dealing with these problems with a positive attitude. It's saying I'm falling, I'm losing my way right now, and I'm aware, but right now I'm just going to take time with the fall. Air Catcher challenges this line of thinking by saying "I won't fall in love with falling." Tyler is saying he won't allow himself to get used to this state, in fact he will "try to avoid those eyes." These eyes belong to the subject of the song, which I don't think is a person, but a personality trait, in this case I think addiction is the trait he is talking about. Do you think there's any merit to these ideas? I would love to hear if you have a different idea. ( I have no-one to talk to about all this stuff and I really love taking these songs apart and finding/sharing what I think the meaning is with others.)

Another really nuanced thing I've noticed is that in the original Goner video (ua-cam.com/video/YgmgFLV0fp4/v-deo.html), at the end, the sound effects from the beginning of Heavydirtysoul play. He also zips up a jacket. In the first Heavydirtysoul video (ua-cam.com/video/I5canBXoCyU/v-deo.html) which has the word "circle" in the title, it begins with the same jacket zipped up. I think it shows that the whole story of the album repeats itself over and over again. Recently in the official music video for HDS, the car also goes around in circles once again. It seems like coincidence but it wouldn't surprise me if this was all intentional and planned.
*Beginning blurryface (heavydirty soul to fairly local):* Tyler is filled with depression and inspired by death, and misses the old days, and he tells people he's human just like them, but decides he'll wait to get help with fixing him. *Mid blurryface (tear in my heart to we don't believe what's on TV):* blurryface hurts him even more, but that doesn't mean he can't be helped, and that also doesn't mean he can't do what he wants to *End blurryface (message man to goner):* he does all he can to warn people that he's messed up and so is our world, and denies the existence of blurryface. None of it works though, so Tyler reaches out to God for help.

Ok. So I was just going through bf theories and then I added some of them up and this is really unbelievable!!! So A LOT of people think that Tyler represents blue and Josh represents red in the logo. Well, I don't think so. Look at the logo. Then look at the way they sit or stand. Josh is ALWAYS on the side of the blue. Even at shows. Josh is on the side of the blue. So then that means Tyler is red. I think we should be focusing more on Josh during this era. Yes I know Tyler is the lead singer but Josh is very important because he has been in the bad since after the 'Regional At Best' ablum. So the |-/ logo. It means something REALLY BIG!! The first part (|) this means music. And the (/) means life or holding onto you (no pun intended). Then what does - this mean. It may mean how Josh and Tyler met. But mostly everyone knows it. The original drummer introduced Tyler to Josh. But when ever they get asked about it. They make up a story. Why? Well I'll save that for another time. But now we know about Josh being blue and Tyler being red. Let's move on. So Josh had his hair dyed blue a while ago. (Which was AWESOME). Then he dyed it to red. For the blurryface era. Maybe, the reason why blurry face is hating on Tyler is because Tyler is trying to protect his best fren from bf. But why would blurryface hate josh? Because bf wants to be THE ONLY ONE. But Josh is there and Tyler loves him so much (I kinda ship Joshler) as a fren. OK let's talk songs! Stressed out. Huh. A VERY OVER PLAYED SONG. but good. So stressed out is the second song in the bf album. So Tyler has GREY on his hands and neck. NOT BLACK. this is extremely important!! It's because it's the start to bf's take over. And for Josh, DOESN'T HAVE RED AROUND HIS EYES!! WHAT THE ABSOLUTE FRICK? In the whole video!! NOTHING. NO RED. Execpt the beanie and his hair. OK now ride. Another big song. Where they are in a forest. Tyler grey on his neck is getting darker. Then Josh has intense red around his eyes. No blue is anywhere seen so far. Now fairly local. OK so we start off with Josh and Tyler standing. Tyler has a darker black neck and hands. Then Josh has more intense red around his eyes. But though out the video, bf is taking things away, like his drums. He doesn't take anything away from Tyler. They also seem to be in a abandoned building. Also Tyler puts his beanie on his face. WOAH. This video is packed with stuff. Tyler chokes him self. Then what's with ice wall thing. Idk. OK NOW Tear in my heart. So, they are in China town. They don't really belong there, and people are not even thinking about them being alive. So the black on Tyler's neck is the same from Fairly Local. And Josh's red eyes are the same. But the camera goes to Josh A LOT. The last part Jenna beats THE CARP out of Tyler and his makeup begins to disapear. OK Lane Boy, great. So Tyler has two guys behind him. He soon writes 'fame' and 'sucsess' that's really it with this song. Not much. But finally the song that was first created in 2012 and recreated for bf. GONER. This video is very important. It looks a lot like truce. Tyler is in the middle of a street and he had his piano. But we're is josh? We can hear the drums. So Tyler sings "I've got two faces, blurry 's the one I'm not." My guess is Tyler has his own and then his memory's from the vessel era.

Not my theory, but I wanna tell it. In the old version of "Goner" we can hear at the end scream of Blurryface. And this scream also is an intro of Heavydirtysoul. So does it mean, that Blurryface album is like endless circle? Aw, it's pretty creepy
Your explanation of Not Today is wrong! It is one of the saddest songs on the album. That song signifies Tyler's defeat against blurryface. Blurryface has torn him down and that's why we go to Goner, which is Tyler starting out completely defeated and then finally beating Blurryface in the end. I have lots of reasons to back this up, but summarized quickly: -"Listen, I know this one’s a contradiction because of how happy it sounds, But the lyrics are so down," - This means it's going to be a sad song. -Not today is a back and forth between Tyler and BF, tyler starts out strong but then he says that he "heard him say" which means Blurryface. And blurryface says "Not today, tore the curtains down, windows open now make a sound" - that is BF telling tyler to jump out the window -The music building, the trumpet horns and the "na na na' are all representative of BF. Those all get louder as the song continues. This also makes sense because Tyler said at the beginning "this is a contradiction because of how happy it sounds" - Tyler's last verse is him at the piano trying to fight back but he sounds so defeated. Blurryface has won.
Wow, I find it really interesting that apparently other people's interpretations of "Not Today" are COMPLETELY different from mine. And I thought it was really obvious and simple 🤣🤣 So my interpretation: When I heard the song I immediately thought of Foster the People's lyrics "You know those days when you wanna just choose to not get out of bed, you're lost in your head again". To me, Not Today is just about one of those days when you're depressed and you don't want to get out of bed or leave your room. You're better off staying in here, and the rest of the world is better off without you out there. The "you" being addressed is just a well-meaning person coming into your room, opening your curtains to let in the sun, telling you to get up and pull yourself together and do stuff. Because they are "out of my mind" and "not seeing my side", i.e. they don't understand the state of mind you're in and that you just want to be left alone. And this is most likely not the first time this situation has played out either. "You waste all this time trying to get to me" and they just don't get it. The "doesn't mean I'm not willing to take you down... I'm sorry" is just like a "I love you but please eff off and leave me alone... I'm sorry" because when you're feeling like that you really do get really really angry at someone trying to snap you out of it, even though you know they're just trying to help. [Edit: it also reminds me of "I am not as fine as I seem... pardon me for yelling", like when you're depressed you tend to get angry all the time and yell at people and then you feel bad because it's not their fault you feel like crap.] And overall while you're feeling like crap and you want to be left alone, you also do realise that you're not being rational at all. You would actually be better off if you just let this person help you. "I'm out of my mind, I'm not seeing things right, I waste all this time trying to run from you". I'm not rational and I should listen to you... but not today. That was how I heard it immediately, but maybe that's because this scenario plays out many many times in my life 😋 I feel like sometimes with tøp we get so caught up in interpreting a song within the context of the lore or an album, that we totally forget about the possibilities of interpreting it just as a standalone song.
Are you SURE the Message Man isn't God? I have always thought of it as using discretion before taking your life. Not everyone is suicidal or depressed etc. so these lyrics aren't for everyone.
I believe it's all about his depression, anxieties, and how he deals with it/ what it does to him and how he DOES fight back and has good days, but that it comes in waves and although he sometimes defeats "blurryface", he comes back to haunt him.
This album is so interesting to me. I remember discovering it after i graduated high school in 2016. At the time i didnt think much of it. But in the last few months i came back to it and gave it another listen for nostalgia really. However, i found that this album resonated with me on a whole new level now that ive grown up and experienced alot more than before. I love this album so much now. It helps me explain how i feel when i cant explain it myself all the time.

I first heard and listened to TOP at church just before the service got started "message man" referring to the pastor I guess. Someone in charge must be really edgy cuz our church isn't conservative by any stretch but that was an interesting choice. Also heard thunder by imagine dragons and don't let me down by chainsmokers. Anyways to make a long story longer the more I listen to pilots the more I like them. Are they a Christian band? If you stretch a ways. My guess is they are Christian guys trying to get in thru the back door of your mind. Maybe I overthink things but my guess is the black clothes they wear represents sin and red socks are the blood of Jesus. Just speculation. Cheers

Your explanations are better interpretations than Charles Manson had for the Beatles, by far. It's pretty clear pilots are not a one dimensional group. I'm 55 and have liked everything from Sinatra to dead kennedys. My favorite song and version is take and go in their lowlands concert. Both Tyler and Josh were sharp as ever at the same time.
I might be wrong, but I think for ride Tyler is singing about how he needs to get back in control of his ride otherwise blurryface the character will take over it. Holding on to you backs this up too because it's about getting back with your body and thoughts. In the first lines it says 'im taking over my body back in control no more shotty' Shotty is a slang term for shot gunning the passenger seat in a car. But now blurry has come, he can't do this or else blurry will take over Tyler. Also, at the beginning of ride there are some weird noises. If you edit those to make them a higher pitch, it sounds like Tyler. We know from stressed out that a lower version of Tyler is blurryface. Blurry is making the grunting sounds at the start. Fairly local, the next song in the album, I think is taken over my blurryface because the first verse contains negative things about Tyler. Tyler regains his thoughts in the second verse though as it's positive. Blurryface gets back though because we know Tyler speaking in a lower tone isn't blurry.

Don't know about you guys, but this point of view about blurryface itself makes me love this hole album even more. The main reason for this has a lot to do with my entire life. The way he explained the album, showing that Tyler is not a suicidal obssessive, but tormented by this part of him, the fact that he is just as human and as sinful as us, makes me feel a lot more into being a fan. Message Man could also be referring to God, and how we should not misinterpret the message of the Bible. Just another idea. I always listen to it as: 'Please use discretion when your messing with the message, man' so the message man is not a person per say, he is just using a literary technique there to throw people off and add more dimension. I dont think Tyler has a problem with people interpreting and finding meaning in his lyrics necessarily. I think that is rather what they are they for and why he writes! okay, im done now.

I dont think the songs are THAT religious, though I could definitely understand why you would think that. These are MY meanings of the songs, and what I choose to believe they're about :3
Heavydirtysoul- Lyrics like "This is not rap, this is not hip-hop, just another attempt to make the voices stop" and "Mindless zombies walkin around with a limp and a hunch, sayin stuff like 'you only live once' (i'll get into second verse later)" make me believe he's talking about how his songs are about... well, depressing things, and it takes time to learn the message of a Twenty One Pilots song. They have their own style! As for the second verse, he's talking about how thrown around phrases like "yolo" are. Agreeing with "yolo" in the next lyric, but giving a deeper meaning to it in the same sentence.
Stressed Out- As you said, its about wishing you didn't have so much pressure on you, and that you just want to be a kid again, when life was pretty much stress free.
Ride- Again, like you said
Tear in my Heart- Of course its about his wife, Jenna (though some people choose to believe its about Josh as a joke). It talks about how she's a "tear in his heart". True love hurts, that's how he know's she's the one.
Fairly Local- I had a different meaning before, but with your explanation, I agree with you! How Tyler and Josh were just like you (the clique) and they were able to overcome, and the clique will too (I included Josh because Josh has extreme anxiety and is able to overcome it on stage).
Lane Boy- Again, like you said, won't go into details because you just need to watch the video.
The Judge- When he is talking about "the judge", I think he's more talking about the media. A lot of the media insults TØP for being too mainstream/emo. When Tyler says "set me free", he's more talking about how he wants them to let it go, and to just not listen to his music.
Polarize- Same with Lane Boy, just watch the video because I agree
WDBWOTV- The song switches messages for me, the first verse talking about how the media is always lying to you, and to pay attention to real life. The hook and chorus are more about a close friend, either Josh or Jenna or somebody else. The second verse kinda switches back, saying "what if my dream does not happen, would I just change what I told my friends" and the lyrics after suggest as well. He doesnt WANT to pay attention to how big or small the media says Twenty One Pilots is, because he has learned to kill his dreams of becoming successful, in case such thing needed to happen.
Hometown- I believe it is about Columbus, Ohio, personally. When he says "there's no sun", he's talking about how there is no light shed on the beauty of Columbus, Ohio, and that you can honestly make it anywhere.
Not Today- This one (and Goner) are about Blurryface himself. Tyler wanting to fight back against Blurryface, and just saying "no"
Goner- Goner is his way of saying "you think you understand, but you don't" TO Blurryface. The hook "and so I'm weak, and beaten down, I'll slip away into the sound. The ghost of you is close to me. I'm inside out, you're underneath."
Tyler wants Blurryface gone, but instead chooses to use Blurryface to help him, in the sense that Tyler always wants to get better. Blurryface, with the slight insecurities, helps Tyler evolve his music.
Instead of "conquering" Blurryface, Tyler accepts him.
As for who Blurryface is, Tyler has repeated multiple times that Blurryface is a character that represents insecurities. The blurry neck, Tyler explains, is how when you go on stage, how your throat feels like it gets clogged because you're nervous of how the show will go.
The black hands, as Tyler says, his how he is insecure about anything he makes with his hands. Including how he writes his songs, and plays the piano and ukulele.

"i know my souls freezing, hells hot for good reason so please pick me" he's saying that his soul is freezing on earth and that's okay because hell is warmer.

I think that was meant more as a joke / easter egg, not because the song is about Josh. I'm pretty sure I saw a tweet from Tyler once where he said he was supposed to just be shouting something else but when he was recording Josh was outside the soundproof glass and couldn't hear him so he shouted Josh's name.

I honestly thought that “Lane Boy” would’ve been about how the older generations, specifically the Baby Boomers, try to stick to their old roots and way of life, as well as Generation Z’s defiance of the Boomers forcing their lifestyle upon Gen Z. i.e. “they say stay in your lane boy, but we go where we want to/will they be alive tomorrow”. That also points out how the Baby Boomer generation is on the brink of ending soon, and how Generation Z will soon be out of their grasp.

Thanks for the video! I've enjoyed it. I saw his lyrics in the same light except for "Not Today". Tyler has a song on Vessel "Ode to Sleep" where he admits his fear of being associated with God (like Peter's) denial. In Ode he states to his fans, "I'm afraid to tell you who I adore. Won't tell you who I'm singing towards. Metaphorically, I'm a whore and that's denial #4."
"Not Today" to me is again his fear of his musical calling. Or possibly the tug of war between fame and faith. The entire song is a conversation between him and God who has "heard" his "voice". A key in the dialog is the change in between hook 1 and 2. First, he is rejecting his call, "You are out of my mind. You aren't seeing my side. You waste all this time trying to get to me but you are out of my mind." The. The second bridge after he calls God out saying, "Just because I play the piano doesn't mean I, I'm not willing to take you down." And immediately Tyler regrets what he said and says, "I'm sorry." Then comes full circle on the second bridge and admits he cannot out run God. "I, I'm out of my mind. I'm not seeing things right. I waste all this time trying to run from you but I, I'm out of my mind."
Even looking at Not Today as Tyler running from God brings it back to illuminate Polarize in a similar light. What or who is he denying? I believe it is God. His religion coupled with his state of mind makes him fear those demons in the night will find out who holds his devotion.
I could be off the mark a bit. Not today resonates with me quite a bit though because I share his feeling of being called but doubting whether or not I could be any benefit to this world beyond my 4 walls. Though, I don't play the piano :)

Hey, so I really love Blurryface as an album and as a concept and I really loved your explanation of the songs and for the most part, I agreed with most of it; however, when you talked about 'Doubt', that's kind of where my interpretation of the song differs (and that's the beauty of music, that there isn't one set meaning behind a song, and everyone can view it differently). You say that Tyler's signing to God to not forget him, but I personally feel that it's more about him singing towards Blurryface as a character, that he feels he can't be creative without him because he draws on his insecurities and anxities to make music and that even though he wants to overcome him, he isn't sure what kind of person he would be if that were to ever happen, but yeah that was about it!

Definitely, music is all down to interpration and I don't think it'd be that interesting if top just came out and said what all of their songs actually mean. I mean, I think Doubt is him addressing Blurryface because as a concept, Blurryface is the antagonist of the entire album and there's several times where Tyler speaks to him directly, because at the end in 'Goner', he's asking for help in defeating him because he is aware that his insecurities and anxieties are not who he is, and he can overcome it, or at least overcome it for the moment, but that's just the way I see it, and the way I relate to it (and I also really love talking about the meaning of top's music haha).

let me explain my point of view. so until the whole dema story was out i tought it was about him asking God not to forget about him and stuff cause hes no one without him. but now after listening the song i noticed he referes the bishops, so i tried to interpert this in another way. what if this song is about clancys fear and anxiety because if he doesnt know if he'll be able to leave dema? and maybe theres someone in there he loves thats gonna escape with him (notice the part where he says "Hope you haven't left without me Hope you haven't left without me, please)and since it seams clancy is retinking it or maybe doubting it he maybe getting anxiety and starting to doubt if the person will escape with him?? or maybe that person already escaped, and he's asking them not to forget abou him. idk just a though, idk if its right or if i've made any mistakes (if so please correct me) and yeah i think thats it, sorry if its a bit confusing

He mentions the song and comments on how everyone thinks its about Josh. He continues on saying its not about Josh and jokingly says how he can look at Josh while hes performing song when Jenna is not there. So that almost confirms that its about Jenna. I agree with Isabel. In Not Today, Tyler's arguing with God, saying he wants to stay comfortable at home in the dark with the curtains drawn. He wants God to stay out of his mind. He thinks the world is better off without him. But God's like, "get your butt out there and do my will and sing (make a noise/sound) and transform the world" - God's the one who tears the curtains down. And well, if u read the Bible, God is all about tearing curtains 😜 (I think this song goes well as a companion to Ode to Sleep, which is also an argument with God about God's plans for Tyler. And notice both songs say "I'm sorry" in them.)
Yeah, I always thought that it was Tyler talking to God, mostly because of the part where he says "Don't you test me now... I'm sorry." Like, why would he say I'm sorry to Blurryface. But the explanation in the video is really good also, and makes a lot of sense.

I want to also add (I don't think you said it?) that the implication is that Tyler defeats or is starting to win against Blurryface by the end of the album. With Heavydirtysoul and Stressed Out, Tyler's admitting he's lost and the various songs explore why. With Goner, Tyler's fighting back. And though he's "weak & beaten down," he gets closer to God (the ghost of you) and wants to stay there. The imagery the band uses for Goner in concerts & on T-shirts (the white doves/Holy Spirit overtaking the red one/Blurryface) echo this idea. I think it's kind of a story arc of the album.

Hey dude here's an update on who Tyler might be talking about in We Don't Believe What's On TV; If you look up the acoustic version of the song, halfway through the performance Tyler takes a break and says "A lot of people think this song's about Josh. It's not." and afterwards he laughs, so that's pretty much confirmation that he's indeed not talking about Josh in the song, so now we know that he's either talking about Jenna or his fans.

Hey man, love watching your Twenty One Pilots videos! I wanted to rattle off my ideas about how I think all of their albums are connected by common truths or ideas (I'm not sure if these are the words I'm looking for). Like how night is always portrayed as the time where some of our more unpleasant thoughts tend to creep out and give us trouble. I have noticed that there seems to be similar ideas in the self-titled album and Blurryface. For instance: in A Car, A Torch, A Death, Tyler says how he "begins to envy the headlights driving south." And how he wants to fall out of that moving car. In The Judge, he talks about leaving a house, and when he''s heading down this route he thinks he's going south. I've always taken that to mean that to him; "
South" is a positive direction. It makes sense too considering their song Polarize talks about "separating them, splitting them up from wrong and right." There are two poles; North and South. It also seems like some of the songs in these two albums challenge each other. Two songs that come to mind are Air Catcher and Ride. Ride is a negative perspective of dealing with these problems with a positive attitude. It's saying I'm falling, I'm losing my way right now, and I'm aware, but right now I'm just going to take time with the fall. Air Catcher challenges this line of thinking by saying "I won't fall in love with falling." Tyler is saying he won't allow himself to get used to this state, in fact he will "try to avoid those eyes." These eyes belong to the subject of the song, which I don't think is a person, but a personality trait, in this case I think addiction is the trait he is talking about. Do you think there's any merit to these ideas? I would love to hear if you have a different idea. ( I have no-one to talk to about all this stuff and I really love taking these songs apart and finding/sharing what I think the meaning is with others.)
Hi, it’s 4 years later, but could “eyes” mean ii’s, like his tattoo that is a cross, but looks like two i’s? It would tie into the concept of his struggle with God/faith. Just a random thought!
Another really nuanced thing I've noticed is that in the original Goner video (ua-cam.com/video/YgmgFLV0fp4/v-deo.html), at the end, the sound effects from the beginning of Heavydirtysoul play. He also zips up a jacket. In the first Heavydirtysoul video (ua-cam.com/video/I5canBXoCyU/v-deo.html) which has the word "circle" in the title, it begins with the same jacket zipped up. I think it shows that the whole story of the album repeats itself over and over again. Recently in the official music video for HDS, the car also goes around in circles once again. It seems like coincidence but it wouldn't surprise me if this was all intentional and planned.

*End blurryface (message man to goner):* he does all he can to warn people that he's messed up and so is our world, and denies the existence of blurryface. None of it works though, so Tyler reaches out to God for help.

Ok. So I was just going through bf theories and then I added some of them up and this is really unbelievable!!! So A LOT of people think that Tyler represents blue and Josh represents red in the logo. Well, I don't think so. Look at the logo. Then look at the way they sit or stand. Josh is ALWAYS on the side of the blue. Even at shows. Josh is on the side of the blue. So then that means Tyler is red. I think we should be focusing more on Josh during this era. Yes I know Tyler is the lead singer but Josh is very important because he has been in the bad since after the 'Regional At Best' ablum. So the |-/ logo. It means something REALLY BIG!! The first part (|) this means music. And the (/) means life or holding onto you (no pun intended). Then what does - this mean. It may mean how Josh and Tyler met. But mostly everyone knows it. The original drummer introduced Tyler to Josh. But when ever they get asked about it. They make up a story. Why? Well I'll save that for another time. But now we know about Josh being blue and Tyler being red. Let's move on. So Josh had his hair dyed blue a while ago. (Which was AWESOME). Then he dyed it to red. For the blurryface era. Maybe, the reason why blurry face is hating on Tyler is because Tyler is trying to protect his best fren from bf. But why would blurryface hate josh? Because bf wants to be THE ONLY ONE. But Josh is there and Tyler loves him so much (I kinda ship Joshler) as a fren. OK let's talk songs! Stressed out. Huh. A VERY OVER PLAYED SONG. but good. So stressed out is the second song in the bf album. So Tyler has GREY on his hands and neck. NOT BLACK. this is extremely important!! It's because it's the start to bf's take over. And for Josh, DOESN'T HAVE RED AROUND HIS EYES!! WHAT THE ABSOLUTE FRICK? In the whole video!! NOTHING. NO RED. Execpt the beanie and his hair. OK now ride. Another big song. Where they are in a forest. Tyler grey on his neck is getting darker. Then Josh has intense red around his eyes. No blue is anywhere seen so far. Now fairly local. OK so we start off with Josh and Tyler standing. Tyler has a darker black neck and hands. Then Josh has more intense red around his eyes. But though out the video, bf is taking things away, like his drums. He doesn't take anything away from Tyler. They also seem to be in a abandoned building. Also Tyler puts his beanie on his face. WOAH. This video is packed with stuff. Tyler chokes him self. Then what's with ice wall thing. Idk. OK NOW Tear in my heart. So, they are in China town. They don't really belong there, and people are not even thinking about them being alive. So the black on Tyler's neck is the same from Fairly Local. And Josh's red eyes are the same. But the camera goes to Josh A LOT. The last part Jenna beats THE CARP out of Tyler and his makeup begins to disapear. OK Lane Boy, great. So Tyler has two guys behind him. He soon writes 'fame' and 'sucsess' that's really it with this song. Not much. But finally the song that was first created in 2012 and recreated for bf. GONER. This video is very important. It looks a lot like truce. Tyler is in the middle of a street and he had his piano. But we're is josh? We can hear the drums. So Tyler sings "I've got two faces, blurry 's the one I'm not." My guess is Tyler has his own and then his memory's from the vessel era.

Is it possible Not Today is between him and God? It's obviously an exchange between two people, it's just hard to say if it's blurryface or God. The line "better off without me in it trying to transform it." makes me think God.

Not my theory, but I wanna tell it. In the old version of "Goner" we can hear at the end scream of Blurryface. And this scream also is an intro of Heavydirtysoul. So does it mean, that Blurryface album is like endless circle? Aw, it's pretty creepy
Your explanation of Not Today is wrong! It is one of the saddest songs on the album. That song signifies Tyler's defeat against blurryface. Blurryface has torn him down and that's why we go to Goner, which is Tyler starting out completely defeated and then finally beating Blurryface in the end.
I have lots of reasons to back this up, but summarized quickly:
-"Listen, I know this one’s a contradiction because of how happy it sounds,
But the lyrics are so down," - This means it's going to be a sad song.
-Not today is a back and forth between Tyler and BF, tyler starts out strong but then he says that he "heard him say" which means Blurryface. And blurryface says "Not today, tore the curtains down, windows open now make a sound" - that is BF telling tyler to jump out the window
-The music building, the trumpet horns and the "na na na' are all representative of BF. Those all get louder as the song continues. This also makes sense because Tyler said at the beginning "this is a contradiction because of how happy it sounds"
- Tyler's last verse is him at the piano trying to fight back but he sounds so defeated. Blurryface has won.
Wow, I find it really interesting that apparently other people's interpretations of "Not Today" are COMPLETELY different from mine. And I thought it was really obvious and simple 🤣🤣
So my interpretation:
When I heard the song I immediately thought of Foster the People's lyrics "You know those days when you wanna just choose to not get out of bed, you're lost in your head again". To me, Not Today is just about one of those days when you're depressed and you don't want to get out of bed or leave your room. You're better off staying in here, and the rest of the world is better off without you out there.
The "you" being addressed is just a well-meaning person coming into your room, opening your curtains to let in the sun, telling you to get up and pull yourself together and do stuff. Because they are "out of my mind" and "not seeing my side", i.e. they don't understand the state of mind you're in and that you just want to be left alone. And this is most likely not the first time this situation has played out either. "You waste all this time trying to get to me" and they just don't get it.
The "doesn't mean I'm not willing to take you down... I'm sorry" is just like a "I love you but please eff off and leave me alone... I'm sorry" because when you're feeling like that you really do get really really angry at someone trying to snap you out of it, even though you know they're just trying to help. [Edit: it also reminds me of "I am not as fine as I seem... pardon me for yelling", like when you're depressed you tend to get angry all the time and yell at people and then you feel bad because it's not their fault you feel like crap.]
And overall while you're feeling like crap and you want to be left alone, you also do realise that you're not being rational at all. You would actually be better off if you just let this person help you. "I'm out of my mind, I'm not seeing things right, I waste all this time trying to run from you". I'm not rational and I should listen to you... but not today.
That was how I heard it immediately, but maybe that's because this scenario plays out many many times in my life 😋
I feel like sometimes with tøp we get so caught up in interpreting a song within the context of the lore or an album, that we totally forget about the possibilities of interpreting it just as a standalone song.

I believe it's all about his depression, anxieties, and how he deals with it/ what it does to him and how he DOES fight back and has good days, but that it comes in waves and although he sometimes defeats "blurryface", he comes back to haunt him.

This album is so interesting to me. I remember discovering it after i graduated high school in 2016. At the time i didnt think much of it. But in the last few months i came back to it and gave it another listen for nostalgia really. However, i found that this album resonated with me on a whole new level now that ive grown up and experienced alot more than before. I love this album so much now. It helps me explain how i feel when i cant explain it myself all the time.

I first heard and listened to TOP at church just before the service got started "message man" referring to the pastor I guess. Someone in charge must be really edgy cuz our church isn't conservative by any stretch but that was an interesting choice. Also heard thunder by imagine dragons and don't let me down by chainsmokers. Anyways to make a long story longer the more I listen to pilots the more I like them. Are they a Christian band? If you stretch a ways. My guess is they are Christian guys trying to get in thru the back door of your mind. Maybe I overthink things but my guess is the black clothes they wear represents sin and red socks are the blood of Jesus. Just speculation. Cheers

Your explanations are better interpretations than Charles Manson had for the Beatles, by far. It's pretty clear pilots are not a one dimensional group. I'm 55 and have liked everything from Sinatra to dead kennedys. My favorite song and version is take and go in their lowlands concert. Both Tyler and Josh were sharp as ever at the same time.
I might be wrong, but I think for ride Tyler is singing about how he needs to get back in control of his ride otherwise blurryface the character will take over it. Holding on to you backs this up too because it's about getting back with your body and thoughts. In the first lines it says 'im taking over my body back in control no more shotty' Shotty is a slang term for shot gunning the passenger seat in a car. But now blurry has come, he can't do this or else blurry will take over Tyler. Also, at the beginning of ride there are some weird noises. If you edit those to make them a higher pitch, it sounds like Tyler. We know from stressed out that a lower version of Tyler is blurryface. Blurry is making the grunting sounds at the start. Fairly local, the next song in the album, I think is taken over my blurryface because the first verse contains negative things about Tyler. Tyler regains his thoughts in the second verse though as it's positive. Blurryface gets back though because we know Tyler speaking in a lower tone isn't blurry.

Don't know about you guys, but this point of view about blurryface itself makes me love this hole album even more. The main reason for this has a lot to do with my entire life. The way he explained the album, showing that Tyler is not a suicidal obssessive, but tormented by this part of him, the fact that he is just as human and as sinful as us, makes me feel a lot more into being a fan. I do love this album and will always have it in my heart.

Message Man could also be referring to God, and how we should not misinterpret the message of the Bible. Just another idea. I always listen to it as: 'Please use discretion when your messing with the message, man' so the message man is not a person per say, he is just using a literary technique there to throw people off and add more dimension. I dont think Tyler has a problem with people interpreting and finding meaning in his lyrics necessarily. I think that is rather what they are they for and why he writes! okay, im done now.
