I should have gone more in depth explaining state and state bloat at the beginning.
State isn't the entire blockchain with all the blocks going back since genesis. State is just the current account balance of all addresses.
Things like NFT's and other tokens are also a part of the state.
So you may have 30 Algo, 3 NFT's and 20 USDC as your state.
State bloat is the state size of everyone's balances becoming too big to store in the nodes memory.
State size doesn't necessarily increase with people doing more transactions. For example, if I have 20 Algo and someone sends me 10 Algo, I now have 30 Algo. 20 Algo uses up the same amount of memory as 30 Algo so the state size didn't increase.
If I had 20 Algo and split it between 2 addresses, that would increase the state size as storing 10 Algo for 2 different addresses uses twice as much memory as 20 Algo in 1 address.
Other things like creating new NFT's or tokens also increase state size as now nodes need to store data for the new nft's/tokens.
If you have people creating lots of addresses or creating new NFT's or tokens, then the state size can quickly expand and become bigger than nodes RAM/SSD's which is why state sharding is needed.
