The Australian Independent Littoral Manoeuvre Vessel (ILMV) initiative represents an ambitious, potentially misplaced priority for the Australian Army's strategic capabilities. Given the improbability of Australia engaging in offensive amphibious operations either regionally or globally, the focus on such a platform may not align with an optimal defence strategy. A more effective defensive posture for Australia could be achieved by deploying swift, smaller naval vessels akin to the U.S. Navy's Cyclone-class patrol ships. These could be outfitted with a versatile array of long-range and short-range missiles and adaptable for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) tasks. The concept that the ILMV will significantly enhance the Army's capacity for coastal operations and insertions might be overly optimistic, diverting attention and resources from more practical and suitable maritime defence solutions.
