a NEW Mini High Route in the Sierra | North Lake to South Lake High Route

  • About 30 miles of almost entirely off-trail travel from North Lake to South Lake, through prime Sierra scenery. I had the idea for this route when hiking the SHR years ago and thinking it a shame that the route stayed on the JMT through this area when there’s so much awesome terrain near the crest. This route can be plugged into the Roper route to make it more adventurous and also works as a standalone long weekend adventure. Special thanks to Jay (Armstrong) and Keaton (Sriracha Rocket) for helping scout this route. Difficulty is similar to that of Roper’s Sierra High Route and the views certainly match the effort required.
    Please note: this video is not a guide. Hike at your own risk.
    Let me know in the comments if you’d be interested in more info on this great little route.

    What a phenomenal looking route, Dan. Brilliant work with just the right amount of clues to be able to follow along on a map. I'll absolutely be adding this to an upcoming SHR trip. Thank you for sharing!

    I was a little south of you in the Gardiner Basin (via Kearsarge/Onion Valley) at the time you did this hike (Sep 12-17th, 2023). Amazing footage, thanks for sharing!

    Extraordinary route, spectacularly captured.
    I haven't done anything south of the YHR yet and this looks extremely compelling.

    Nice job, I have seen your face in Bishop before...This is definitely not new... But one of the great route variations a few of us locals have done and others over the years, Just to name a few. All from North...North to sabrina...from all over Evo... south lake ... over cloud ripper to the druids and down to Bishop...all the way to barrett lakes and down through Pal to big pine... Evo basin over huxley... Echo from leconte ...Dusy... Clyde spires... johnson ....trapezoid... hurd ...goode no goode... It has been done from the milks... from pine creek over four cables to key hole and through your GPX... There are many low key locals that most do not know about here on the East side, that have done way more then gets talked about here on social media or mountain project. Right a guide GPX or spray the good vibe ... But know, this is definitely not a new route. Good times

      Oh I know it’s not new, nothing is. But it makes for a nice title, and it’s new to UA-cam anyway.

    Back in the day when I was trying to find a way to really explore this area outside the known passes, I marked a line through Google Earth similar to yours. But I never did it. Seeing this amazing video and boy - I'm going to follow in your footsteps. Well done Dan, these mini high route loops are truly worth exploring and putting on the map. Esp ones like this, where you are never more than a day from trail. Thank you!

      Awesome! Yeah, the area first caught my eye when doing Roper’s route and being disappointed it was down on the jmt instead of up there. Glad you’re gonna go for it! Let me know if you have any Qs about the route

    Dan - you MUST love talas n boulders! I've done much of this route in pieces over the years. Thought no one had hit Darwin Col - no footprints to be found in 2022 - except Bob Burd. Gonna put this one on my list, when my knees are replaced.

    Objective distances and climb vertical would be helpful. Awesome traverse! Do you think parts would be possible in winter on skis?

    • @DanStenziano
      @DanStenziano  4 місяці тому

      I don’t really ski so it’s hard to say, but I bet a strong back country skier could do the whole thing. I know people ski the original Roper route and this isn’t much different. As for the vertical, the entire route has about 10,300ft vertical gain over its roughly 30 miles

    • @DanStenziano
      @DanStenziano  4 місяці тому

      Yep it is between Tom Ross and Mt Darwin. A bit tricky to locate IRL but it is the notch just west of the mountain that is 13,048ft and called Mt Tom Ross on some maps. (2 diff peaks are called Tom Ross)

    Thompson lake seems out of the way, is it the easiest way to get down the ridge?

    • @DanStenziano
      @DanStenziano  4 місяці тому

      Thompson Lake is the least steep way to get down from the ridge and also was for me the scenic highlight of the route. Not too out of the way, just had to climb the ridge a bit instead of crossing right over
