I couldn't believe what I read, when I read it first, so I read it again, and found it was true. Vaughn Benjamin, lead singer of the best modern roots reggae band, Midnite, has transcended. For me, Midnite has been my go to, all time favorite music, sound of council for doing right, for unapologetic truth telling through music and poetry, for a unyielding historical accounting of the impacts of the slave trade, and who still benefits from it today, for doing my best to make correct decisions, Midnite and the lyrics of Vaughn Benjamin has been constantly playing for my entire adult life. His poetry was about focus, about spirituality, about cultural trauma playing out over centuries. It was about unveiling the result of greed and all the distractions rooted in money and wealth. It was ALWAYS truthful and ALWAYS addressed the human condition. I cannot convey the depth of sadness and loss I'm feeling right now. He was not family, nor a friend, but has been a tremendous teaching force for me, and I will miss hearing his poetry, master poetry. A prophetic voice like his has never been needed more. A heavy loss.
You can listen to this band for hours and still want more. Midnite/akae beka best reggae band ever.
I'm still f'd up behind the prophets passing. I'm so not accepting this.
