As a guy who grew up in Brooklyn, I'm glad to see new trains after so many years, but as someone who has been living in Tokyo for 10+ years, the whole system has a long long way to go.
I was the supervisor on the train on the PM trip when the train reached Euclid Av. It was a great ride. My team and I have been testing these cars for the past year, and there is a lot of thought and innovation put into this train. It has been very cool getting these trains ready for the general public.

I rather the 80's old trains with graffiti as long as train services are running great...These last 3 or 4 yrs its been aweful too many delays wich cost ppl jobs they unreliable
I just rode in one this weekend. Here's my review: The MTA took away most of the seating in the cars; the not so subtle suggestion is that they want to pack more people in trains and that they are meant to stand up - -shoulder to shoulder. Each seat holds five average sized people on each side of the train; that's very little. They did widen the doors and made a little room for people who are standing right at the door which is a nice touch. I didn't get a chance to walk through the cars as someone had vomited all over the floor on one side of the car so everyone had scrambled onto the other side (and not wanting to walk over there). But I did see panhandlers and people wanting to escape from the vomit, wait for the doors to open at the station before exiting and reentering the train in the next car ; I guess no one knew that these trains are meant to be walked through. The digital display was nice but there were no maps at all in the car; the MTA assumes you have a map on your phone which they should not do . After all, you may be riding the A train at that moment but you are likely to want to transfer to another line so it's a good idea to have maps . Strangely there is a big pole which goes through the center of the seats so it severely limits the seating space. It would have been a better design without this pole. A better design choice would have been to put more poles in the center of the train for people to hang onto rather than have them lurk over the seated passengers . All in all, I give the new trains a C+ . It's nice to see something new but I wasn't impressed. The ride itself wasn't smoother or faster to my estimation and you could NOT understand what the conductor was saying through his speaker announcements; as usual in New York, the sound was muffled or distorted.
That's the problem with these new ideas. They come from people who don't ride the trains daily and don't know consider it will affect actual passengers.

The new trains look good, but delays, crime, panhandling and homeless/mentally ill people in subways need to be taken care of as well. Riders safety should be a priority.
Can only be achieved with livable rent prices, so I don't forsee anytime soon that it's resolved. Just as the highest crime rates on Toronto transit were seen in 2023 as we hit the highest rents ever.
The R46 trains (1:31) are my favorites. There is ample seating and the rare window seat. Nowadays, on the newest trains, there’s only a row that can fit 6 moderately sized human beings. Not to mention the extremely blinding blue lights. Every new series of trains just removes seats. I wouldn’t be surprised if future trains do away with seating altogether and added leaning planks like they already do in some stations.
Yes I agree. I like these best esp because the have sectional seating. Too often on these long bench such as the #4 train people can easily take up more space and feels like it is far less seating. Plus I honestly like the orange colors. Now if they could have made the R46 and updated like these new ones with better tech and door that would be perfect. Or an even more perfect idea would be to have R46 seat design with wider doors and new tech but each line would have the train line seating color, e.g. D/F etc line R46 keeps its orange, and the Green Lines would have Green and shades, the Blue line would have shades of Blue, Red line shades of Red et al.
Headed to NYC in a few weeks - first time actually in the city and not a layover - and I'm definitely gonna try and snatch a ride on these new train cars
Some geniuses already got into a fight on the train and the doors jammed. Also 10+ years for these carts to come to fruition and they already have those new ones planned.
The reason they haven't is because many station platforms are too small. They wouldn't be able to accommodate the gates and the normal degree of passengers without expanding the platform back.
2:30 - I'd say it's not very likely, since Kawasaki has had a lot of experience with trains (including shinkansen) from their country of origin, *Japan* . So you'd very well know about how reliable and smooth these trains will be, so long as they're maintained properly 👀
Nice train. I don't take the A very often. However, what is the point of a brand new train when the tracks and signals are a mess? Also, how long before they become public toilets and trash cans. And, as others have stated, I would rather be SAFE riding the trains than have a new one

Those are an upgrade for NYC, although I personally hate that lighting. Feels very industrial. We have similar new trains in DC. But I like the old ones better, with the ugly orange seats. But they’re nicely padded so they are much more comfortable than the new ones where there’s hardly any padding

Huge upgrade, love the new cars! The open gangway style reminds me a lot of the Toronto subway trains which I love. I think New Yorkers will find that this will feel a lot less claustrophobic during rush hour and give people more room to stretch in that "dead zone" area between train cars that would traditionally be blocked off. You see this style a LOT in Europe and Asia.
Guys if you don’t know, there’s another version of this train. Its a R211T, like they mentioned the open gangway. Thats the R211T because the R211T has open gangway and i also think it has USB. So theres 2 models of this train. Hope you guys enjoy the new trains!!❤
The funniest thing is they’re calling it modern. This train is still ancient compared to subway trains in China, India and few other countries in USA. NYC is an ancient city at this point.
The trains are a slight modification of trains that have been around since the early 2000s. It's a slightly updated R143. It's not anything revolutionary. It's an evolutionary train and it'll seem new because it is newer, not because it is all that much different than the R143, R160 or R179 (despite the numbers, all are very similar).
Good to know the people of New York got new trains. I hope someday your subway will look as gorgeous as a subway in Moscow. Wish you all the best from Russia ❤

Before I begin let me establish that I am a New Yorker that lives on the "A" line, therefore, I am qualified to comment with my 15 times a week trip minimum. Everyone is impressed because they are new and "modern" until new and modern begins to fall apart. My biggest issue with these trains is the lack of seating which is inevitably is going to cause crowding at the doors. This line also has one of the biggest issues with homeless people sleeping and doing God knows what else on the train because it takes hours to get from end-to-end for one single ride which takes up seats. Lastly, clearly they don't want people taller than six feet to ride the train as the ceilings are significantly lower than those on other models that are on the line.
Exactly. It is a joke making "new" cars with fewer seats. You are basically paying to stand. Some argue that fewer seats means less homeless sleeping, but homeless don't care and will sleep and do other "things" on those fewer seats. I wound's be surprised that same media that is marketing the new cars to report corruption and overinflated car prices a couple of years from now.
I was going 2 address the seating. It's ridiculous that people have 2 stand 4 so long bc the newer trains have less seats. Standing room leads 2 more theft as well. Pick pockets r gonna have a field day. 1 thing I didn't like about getting on the train from Far Rockaway n the early morning & late night r the homeless people taking over the cars, stretched out seat 2 seat, car 2 car. I'm 6'3" & totally understand. Scoliosis is not a game.
Whilat US Subway users are enjoying LED Screens in trains for the first time. China Subway users are enjoying: 1. WIRELESS PHONE CHARGING POINTS 2. FLAWLESS 5G Connections 3. Some of the best architectural designs and marvels in EVERY subway station. 7. Real time interactive maps inside trains! 8. DRIVERLESS trains. The levels are different! 😂
Well, sadly in the US, people are not well behaved and those things will be destroyed and graffiti bombed maximum 2 days after being released to the public then it will turn into a homeless gathering spot
They're just older compared to the 4 and 5 but the trains are from the 1980s. They have about 5-12 years service left in them. The IRT, number lines, aren't getting new trains for a few years.

Wow, in Melbourne Australia we have had modern trains with the same features for a few years. I would have thought New York would be more up to date.
Well ya gotta remember most of these trains were in service before the Melbourne subway was even built. Takes a long time to upgrade a system this old and this massive
NYC? Up to date? These are two completely different concepts 😭🤣
They even didn’t have contactless card paying option in NYC subway until 2022. What are you talking about 🤣🤣🤣
@@JHulse29 no it doesn’t. MTA just sucks. Flashy new trains running on signal infrastructure form the 40s 😂
@@joenuts5167 yea, and where's the money to upgrade that? Gonna be shelling out 10 bucks a ride 😅
Agreed! I love the Q, N, and W older models' waste of money on those new trains and unusefeul personnel
Moderately sized is right! I just stand now because if it isn't the L - shaped 3 - 2 configuration, I'm good.
They are also my favorite. They should copy the seating pattern but do a flat bench style.
So now we will have 4 people blocking the door.
Take a taxi then

Still need to add freaking gates so no one won't be falling onto the tracks
The reason they haven't is because many station platforms are too small. They wouldn't be able to accommodate the gates and the normal degree of passengers without expanding the platform back.
watching that train be thrown into the ocean was brutal
2:30 - I'd say it's not very likely, since Kawasaki has had a lot of experience with trains (including shinkansen) from their country of origin, *Japan* . So you'd very well know about how reliable and smooth these trains will be, so long as they're maintained properly 👀
Nice train. I don't take the A very often. However, what is the point of a brand new train when the tracks and signals are a mess? Also, how long before they become public toilets and trash cans. And, as others have stated, I would rather be SAFE riding the trains than have a new one

Bro, they do see what's out there in the world. The problem is that you can't shut it down to fix 120-year-old infrastructure it will take too much time (Decades), money (Trillions), and uproot the daily commute for millions of New Yorkers also crippling NYC's economy, remember they have been running 24/7 since 1904.
You obviously have no clue how the MTA operates, or what it even is, don’t comment if you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Agree. It's not just MTA, but the infrastructure in the whole country. I feel embarrassed to compare and disgusted to use this system.
Those are an upgrade for NYC, although I personally hate that lighting. Feels very industrial. We have similar new trains in DC. But I like the old ones better, with the ugly orange seats. But they’re nicely padded so they are much more comfortable than the new ones where there’s hardly any padding
Unfortunately, we have these kinds of modern subway cars probably 10 years ago in China. Anyway, congrats on the progress NYC has made.

Yeah my thoughts exactly.
