Step by step instructions on how to build the PAX Wardrobe (North American Version)
Even with clear directions sometimes it can be challenging to build these things without the parts being numbered and so forth.
We hope this video gives you a clearer understanding of how to assemble this great looking wardrobe.
This new 2.0 version was created with the intent that it could be disassembled (in case of a move) and then reassembled again which explains the accordion style foldable backboard.
Hope this helps. Remember to breathe.
I installed four PAX 2.0 frames (29 1/2" x 92 7/8") yesterday. Here’s what I learned:
First Attempt:
* I followed the method of putting the frame in first, then the metal piece.
* This method was painful and time-consuming.
* Keeping the frame in place while aligning and installing the metal piece was difficult.
Better Method:
* Measure accurately before starting.
* Mark the first drill hole exactly 2 1/2 inches from the wall.
* Consider the bottom baseboard trim when measuring.
* If there’s no baseboard, measure 2 1/2 inches from the side wall.
* The second drill hole should be 24 5/8 inches from the first.
* Follow the height instructions on Page 8. For my 29 x 92 frame, the height was 91 7/16 inches.
Issues with the Booklet:
* The provided booklet doesn’t explain the images well.
* I hope IKEA adds clearer instructions.
Final Tip:
* Follow the imaged instructions step-by-step as per the manual for an easier installation.
I wish Ikea would print a QR code and launch your video :) Thank you for sharing this
@@CristianCiobanu-plus you’re too kind. Glad it helped!
Is it me i prefer the older model trying to put that top on is cumbersome yikes
Something tells me IKEA got sued so they had to redesign it (and make it even more difficult to put together).
Standing the old model up was a real pain. We have both and I like the new model way better
Putting in dozens of tacks with the old one was a royal pain.
I put together an old style PAX a few years ago and had zero difficulty understanding the instructions. The new style is wonky with its wall mount and odd plastic fastening pieces. This well made video saved a lot of aggravation! Totally agree about the top being cumbersome to install!
V1 was super easy to install. Thank you Gen Z designers for screwing up IKEA:-(
A little tip: always start these upright. I tried building one lying down on the ground then moving it and it broke.
@@NASCAR_Junk good to know
Excellent video. I’m struggling with the idea of them sitting on my vinyl plank flooring. The amount of weight I’ll have in mine certainly won’t be ideal for my floating floor. But I really don’t want to cut out the floor and have the system sitting on the subfloor.
However, when I decide, you will certainly get another view lol
Just picked up a set of these for our closet this weekend, and your video was incredibly helpful! Thanks very much for making this!
You are so welcome!
Hey I’m glad I UA-cam this first before starting. Thanks for doing this video. Stupid instructions, def was weary of putting that wall mount first
How did you get it completely plumb with your baseboards and the wall bracket? Did you adjust the front feet to compensate for the tilt backwards? I was thinking of installing a board under the wall mount rail the same thickness as my baseboard or removing the baseboards.
Nope. Our baseboards are pretty flat so there was a negligible tilt. No need to over adjust legs
IKEA should pay you! Great video
What is that dimension please? The one I got is the same but with 3 cuts in the background that fold, instead of just one center cut as yours
Sir, you are out here doing the lords work!!! Thank you so much for this!!! Almost returned this if it wasn’t for your video!

This video helped ALOT! Thank you for taking the time to make this.
You’re very welcome! Happy to help!
This video is a blessing! We have 6 that just arrived today and after seeing the manual I immediately thought I need a video for this. I didn’t realize there was a new version of PAX. Thanks for sharing the trick!
Hi, just a quick question? Is there no need to remove baseboards to wall mount the PAX system?
@@kumarimalireddy4490 depends on the depth of your baseboards. Ours are very thin.
Such a helpful resource! This video was exactly what we needed to put together the wardrobe.Thank you so much!
Thank you SO much! There is no way I would have been able to build this with IKEA's instructions alone!
thank you for helping sir, you content made our process easier than we thought. thank you again!!!
Aligning the Unit before the bracket is such a great improvement over the stock instructions, especially if putting it against a wall or other spots with no wiggle room. Thanks for the walkthrough. i have two of these waiting in box i need to build for the wife.
This tutorial is gonna save me so much time. Thank you really
Incredibly helpful. I have to build 5 of those 93" ones standing up and I was almost thinking of giving up on the idea until I saw this video. Great job explaining it.

Nice video Ross. Dog is good helper.
Breathe, Breath, and Breath is correct it is a great wardrobe but the customer service maze at IKEA is daunting. Your helpful instruction was right on par with what I was thinking. Especially on the front kick panel, getting those in was indeed a chore, I hope that everyone that is having issues should find your channel. In fact Ikea should promote sites such as yours. Going thru 'taskrabbit' is even bigger tunnel. I will say that the tapping of the front blocks should be with caution. I took a small piece of 2x4 and placed against black mount and tapped it into place so that the kick panel would drop in place and not get hung on those tiny ears. Forutnately after my thirty minute un-helping robo-chat I found you. Not evident or easy to find on their site other then being directed to 'taskrabbit' your helpful instruction gets an A-PLUS with me.
This video was of great help. I was struggling to understand the instruction manual. Couldn’t follow it well. This made assembly much much easier. Thanks a lot.
Great walkthrough. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing this video. Really helpful. Their manual is bit complicated

This was so helpful!! I just built it all alone in 20 minutes! Thanks so much!!!
Why is it different than the ones I have seen in Europe? This looks like a pain to put together. I was excited by the new design now I am not sure. Will this make is more secure. I will have a small space to work in and I think I am going to probably have to attach the rail to the wall first. ARG Also do you need to remove the baseboard? I read withe ones in Europe you no longer have to.
It’s not that tough to put together even alone. We didn’t have much space to work in either and it worked out fine. I think that is the whole point of the “accordion backing” is so it can be assembled standing up and you don’t have to tilt the built unit up. Also we didn’t have to remove our baseboards, but we have 1/4 inch thick ones so if they are any thicker than that you may have to. Good luck! Hope this helped you.
This definitely saved me from taking it back! I have put up several in the past and have not bought a new PAX system in a little over three years and I was not happy about the new way to put them together! I’m so happy I found your video ❤️ thank you
@@victoriaberry8018 so glad to hear this!
Yikes :/ I’ve built 15 of the old ones. Bought new for a closet w concrete foundation walls in basement. Can these be built w/o wall anchor? Guessing it still needs the metal brace up top for form, just don’t anchor in wall? I can anchor to ceiling joists from top to prevent tipping
You could drill into concrete walls just need different drill and concrete anchors to screw into
Another question....sorry.... what are your thoughts on how durable it is?
@@sdophoto1405 well I wouldn’t go jumpin around inside it, but so far ours seems fairly sturdy.
I have a baseboard and baaeboard heating. Aside from the mounting rail, is there any other way to mount? In Canada, they don't have the rail for wall mounting. I wonder why?
That I don’t know. It is fully stable without the wall mount. Just try going without I’d say.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much! I would’ve never got this shelf put together without your help! 🙌
You're so welcome!
Did anyone have 4 screws left over lol
Yeah it comes with extra in case you mess up or lose a couple
TY for this … so helpful! One clarification if you don’t mind … I think I saw you left baseboards on … does the Pax system accommodate a baseboard that’s 3/4” thick (not high)?
@@BonjourCoco1 I think that’s the width of ours. Was totally fine. Wouldn’t use the wall brace if it’s any thicker than that though.
@@rossscharphorn8771 appreciate this!
Fabulous instructions! I’m not even gonna bother with opening the instruction booklet😊
3:51 mentioned to add 2 pieces to brace back legs, but wasn’t demonstrated🤷🏼♀️
I know that’s where I got stuck.
Update: I figure it out 😊
Your video saved a lot of time and hassle. You are great
Question: Seems like you were able to attach it to the wall despite having skirting at the bottom of your wall. 8 years ago I purchased a Pax unit and the Ikea assembly staff weren't able to attach it to the wall because of the skirting. Is this no longer a problem with the new Ikea, or did you remove part of the skirting?
@@dreamcatcher2960 didn’t seem to be a problem but our baseboards are very thin

Are you located in the USA? It is great to see someone in the states build one of these because from the looks of other videos the wall mounting process is not the same in all countries.
Yup! This is the US version. 👍🏼
@@rossscharphorn8771 Do you know what states have it so far? I need to build my closet out and I'm not sure if the Miami one has 2.0 yet
@@EvanWasHere we are on the west coast, but were told by the people at our IKEA that they are rolling it out nation wide so you should start seeing them soon!
@@EvanWasHeresearch the website or the app for inventory in your store location. If the description says wall mounted storage frame with rail that is the new design.
@@RaePW I'm screwed. There are no corner units showing anymore. Does Pax 2.0 have corner units?
Excellent video - thank you!
You are welcome!
Hello! Question, did you put the brace on the 1st cabinet or just on the right sided cabinet? Thank you!
Both!
@@rossscharphorn8771 Thank you. Installing this weekend. I owe you a beer!
Yes we braced both
So I had installed two 93 inch high units and a corner of PAX 1.0. Our last piece was out of stock so we had to wait for the new 2.0. It's small piece. Shallow and only 20" wide. Still 93" tall. While we were successful in assembling the 2.0, and this video was very helpful, the 1.0 is far superior. I much prefer assembling a solid box/frame and then adjusting for level and securing to the wall. With 2.0, it seems like you are doing everything at once and the box/frame is never really held together mechanically. I wonder if the design for 2.0 is due to the STURDY Act.
What would you stay the stability is without the wall anchor? Is is somewhat solid or does it sway around?
@@ga8462 it will probably be very solid depending on your floor. We have earthquakes in LA so we had to anchor ours.
Excellent video - thank you!
@@TimColwell you’re welcome! Glad it helped.
How long did it take you to build this?
@@gonzalezajason831 about 20 minutes to build what we show here in the video, and then at least another 20 to build the sliding doors. 40 total.
I strongly dislike this new design. We just put one in our daughter's closet and were dismayed at the entire process. We are not new to the PAX, and have put together 6 others in the past. This new design was more difficult and is cumbersome because it does not allow for movement if you need to adjust. I agree with your assessment about building before attaching the rail. I also think it is probably easier on a more level surface such as you have rather than carpet. We had new plush carpet installed prior to this, which led to a little more difficulty with installation. We also had to attach a piece of trim at the back to screw into the stud, which was in the middle of the unit, and then screw the rail, so that the unit was flush and not leaning.
Excelente vídeo i will be building my its completly diferente from the previous modelo..
Should you still put a brace on the back so things won't sag?
Yes put the back brace on. It’s all there in the video. Good luck!
Do you mean an additional brace in the back?
Just bought the PAX system to build my wife's walk-in... This video helps tremendously!
Thank you SO much. Your method is way better!!
Ah, thank you so much. I came to you tube to see if I really had to start with the bracket on the wall first. I found that idea to be terrifying too. Now I have the confidence to start the build.

@@adonis1752 as solid as an IKEA piece can be. 😉
@@rossscharphorn8771 to me it doesn't look as solid as the old model of Pax. The way the top piece sits I'd be afraid to store anything on top of the unit.

I need to cut about 6 inches off the bottom of the back panel. Is that possible without comproming stability?
That I don’t know. The material it’s made out of is a thin sort of particleboard, and you run the risk of destabilizing the entire unit. But if that is the only way to make it fit, so be it. Good luck to you.
