Melcom is owned by Ghanaians of Indian ancestry. Their grandparents are from India who settled in the then Gold Coast.
@PILATOSTATS - Great history fact and thanks for the comment 😊!
so indians
@@Tu51ndBl4d3 No
@@Tu51ndBl4d3 Ghana wasn't a country by then. So I can say they are 3rd generation ghanaians
3rd generation Ghanaians of Indian descent.
The Accra International Mall is currently under construction and when completed, will be the largest mall in west Africa and 3rd largest on the continent. The future for Ghana is bright
Melcom has two shops in Koforidua.we did most our shopping there without driving to Accra.
You've got that right @Prince Andy! Thanks for commenting ❤️️🇬🇭❤️️!
because of malls?
Guys you are wrong there, Malcom is owned by Ghanaian of India descent. I had a friend who happened to be one of Melcom’ grandson who has never been to India. His parents were born in Ghana also been in India a couple of times but schooled in Ghana.
Great comment - Thanks for adding to the conversation ❤️️💛💚!
I must say that place looks much nicer than a Walmart.
@wesley stephens - Definitely and thanks for the comment 😊!
Do you know America they stole some of the ideas from overseas and brought it over they just remodeled I never seen Walmart look nice until now
The family looks more beautiful 🤩 with each episode. Love it!
Thank you so much 🤗
I don't mind melcom, the Lebanese in Ghana have been here since the early 1900s, and many have married Ghanaians, they have created employment they live here many have never returned, atleast the business is on Ghana soil and not in Lebanon. Ghanaians don't shop thinking about who owns what, life is too short.
@Asantewaa - They are actually Indian, and thanks for the comment 😊!
We have to unite, we have to attract businessmen and tourists from Ghana to Sao Tome and Principe. We are neighbors and we must have a strong single currency and open borders for business. Hugs to the beautiful couple from Sao Tome and Principe
Great comment - Thanks for adding to the conversation ❤️️💛💚!
I moved from Chicago to Cantoments last month. Let me go over to that Walmart really quick.
@Mark-Anthony J - Alrighty then and thanks for the comment 😊!
Wow! A super Melcom!! I love it!! When was this built? Thank you, Tony & Ayo, for always sharing the goods with us!!! #ManyBlessings 🙏🏽⚘️
Don't allow this to happen, no to Walmart.
@club songs 4 - No Walmart is right and thanks for the comment 😊!
I have yet to see a Walmart in Ghana Clickbait trust me do you research
@bjd535 Duh... no Wal-Mart in Ghana, but don't you think that the new Melcom at Spintex is like a Wal-Mart with all the departments, underground parking, and mega feeling? Not click bait. It's my Wal-Mart experience!!
Love these accounts of life in Ghana delivered by this fine family. I used to live in Ghana about fifty years ago.
I was in Ghana last year we were looking for a place to go shopping. It's nice to know that places like this exist
@Go Hard Gambia - There are plenty oooh and thanks for the comment 😊!
We were in Accra this past November and we got our Melcom discount card...😂😂
Thank you for your comment! ❤️️👍😊
Hi Tony, I like the symbolic bird (SANKOFA) on your tee shirt. SANKOFA means 🤔🤔🤔🤔back to my roots
Yes it does!
This place is a great addition to our neighborhood. I purposely avoided the the liquor room. 😂
@Sherrie Bumbray - Very impressive, and thanks for the comment 😊!
Melcom belongs to indians born here in Ghana decades ago. They are now Ghanaians.
Thank you for your comment! ❤️️👍😊
Hello👋🏿 . Ayo, your hair is so pretty. I love the head wraps, but why don't you wear your hair out for the vlogs? It was so fun seeing the boys. Those stores were huge and looked like they were offering some great things. I wish you shared some prices with us.
This was a great vlog. Thank you for sharing.
@Sonya S - It's quicker to just wrap it and the prices go up and down so often here. Thanks for the comment 😊!
FYI: The owners of Melcom. "Bhagwan Khubchandani is the son of Ramchand Khubchandani. Ramchand Khubchandani, as an Indian immigrant came to Ghana in 1929, and went from shop assistant to store owner. He later became a retail magnate and the owner of Glamour Stores. Bhagwan Khubchandani who is the subject in this article, followed in his father’s footsteps. He spent many years working for his father’s business in Ghana and also in Japan and Hong Kong. For thirty years, he was Managing Director of Glamour Stores.
In 1989, he decided to fork off and set up his own company and group. So he established Melcom Group. This was when and how Melcom came into existence."
@Sherrie Bumbray - Appreciate the history lesson, and thanks for the comment 😊!
Hi guys remind me more of IKEA. You are looking so good and the boys are getting so big. They were having fun . Coming in October. Looking forward to one of your day trip.
@Jett Union - Long-time viewers we can't forget! Look us up when you get in and thanks for the comment 😊!

@Golden Heart - Even better, and thanks for the comment 😊!
I just listen to a Ghanaian describe what Americans are going through in Ghana. Over 50% have returned to the US 🇺🇸 and the rest are on life support. I recommend you subscribe to these bloggers 😢 because they don't have much going on.
Melcom might not be for Ghanaians but i bet you those lebanese owners are more Ghanaian than some of us, they’ve lived all their life’s here and have given birth to their younger one’s here since the 70’s or even more, is like saying elom musk isn’t American but rather a South African
@kwame scratch - Stop thinking all Ghanaians are poor and wouldn't shop there because they do. Even the smaller stores Ghanaians patronize and thanks for the comment 😊!
@@ExpatLifeGhana did i say all Ghanaians are poor? , in your video you said the sad thing is that all these supermarkets belong to foreign who make their money’s here and repatriates them into their countries and I’m saying the owners of melcom are more Ghanaians than we think because they’ve been here for long. I never stated anywhere saying all Ghanaians are poor
That liquor area looks like it does here at our liquor stores. Nice place to shop. All in one shopping
@Great Blackness - Great selection too, and thanks for the comment 😊!
I'm sure you guys have figured this out by now as you mentioned but nothing in Ghana is Ghanaian owned. I think the same way you do on it though, if that's the game and Ghanaians aren't playing then I can't hate the people who are. Lebanese, Indians and Chinese people run everything. If Ghanaians actually cared about their money being sent abroad to develop other people's countries, they would do something about it, but since Ghanaians do not care, why should we? Shout out to the Indians for creating something amazing. Next time I am visiting Ghana, I'll definitely visit there.
Wow, the kids have really grown. It's good to know we could have that type of shopping experience as well as the street vendors. Everyone needs to eat 😉
So true!
Will be visiting in a month. In terms of grocery shopping, is Accra mall or Melcolm the cheaper option? I will be staying in East Legon, but I am willing to take an uber / bolt if need be. Thanks to any responses
Excellent Post! Continued Blessings to you!👍🏾
My wife and i Ilove you guys channel we are glad we stumbled upon it so much information thank you 👍🏾
Those ghanian drivers are crazy and i thought US drivers were crazy nope as far as the shopping experience is a little different, and pric3s are high. A little bag of cheese is like 16 dollars US the people in ghana are ok i guess hit and miss
We don't want foreign companies in our country. We should buy local
Unfortunately this supermarket chain isn’t owned by a Ghanaian or black person. I’d rather shop at the local market.
@BunchaSlime - It is much more than a supermarket. Ghanaians aren't like that, they are employing thousands across Ghana, and thanks for the comment 😊!
You all need to to show me how to move to the continent
They have these small setup in Cameroon Doula and Guines Equatorial Malabo and Bata, but yes no Walmart. IIRC Massmarts exist in South Africa and Nigeria that's similar
Thank you for your comment! ❤️️👍😊
Can't remain happy and proud if it is not owned by the natives.
😂😂😂😂 this is a FAMILY business even in the USA 🇺🇸 not owned by wypipo but a family
They aren't blacks, but probably they have lived there for centuries.
Lebanese,Pakistanis, and Indians have lived in ghana since independence, and they've owned businesses ever since.
@@Ghanadiaries and many of them marry Ghanaians with no issue. This is not Uganda.
@@hadast3806 Of cos.
@Hadas T They are business minded, and that is admirable. Many Ghanaians could have done what they have, but they like to stay in their small store at Opera Square or makola, overpack things and never expand.
As always, great conversation. Thank you for the video😎
Glad you enjoyed it!
Melcom is Indian owned according to Wikipedia.
Hello friends. I'm in need of some help. I purchased 6 plots in aburi and started to build my home. I'm in the u.s.(Massachusetts). I have a friend who is taking care of all my business. So far so good up until purchasing building materials. Please if you can, how much is a ton of rods? I know they come in different sizes so roughly what will it cost. He quoted 1600 u.s. dollars which I find way to much. Also a bag of sand was quoted as being 20. U.S. dollars. Please, please, help!! With these prices how will I even finish in a timely manner.
Luv u guys!!
Thank you❤️💛💚
@claricia cabral-dasilva -Prices change here all the time and it is very hard to build when not here. Hope things work out and thanks for the comment 😊!
I know that none of the Walmart stores are not black owned! Are any of the stores that you have mentioned in this vlog black or African owned?
Malcom isn't owned by Ghanaians. They see the opportunities we don't see.
@mary Gambrell : why can't you open African or black own stores if you have a problem with other nationals doing what you can't do at the moment.
@Mary Gambrell - In the States do you just shop at Black-owned stores? The thing is, Melcom treats their workers with more respect than we have seen Ghanain employers, and thanks for the comment 😊!
@@ExpatLifeGhana good point
@@ExpatLifeGhana I don’t shop at stores based on race! I do try to patronize the mom and pop or community stores first. Could you tell me what Melvon and his workers have to do with the questions that you have asked of me?! I assumed that you migrated to Africa from the US is partly due to racism and to bond with fellow Africans physically, socially, and economically! I had no intention of offending you by asking you a question on black ownership! Yet, you and a few others that have commented on my statement made the decision to attack me verbally! I will UNSUBSCRIBED from your channel, so, therefore, do not reply to this message. This is the first time that I have had a content creator send me negative comments in reference to their blog. Good bye and good riddance!!!!

Melcom owns by Indian family
Thank you for your comment! ❤️️👍😊
This big box store is probably owned by the Chinese. I looked at a video recently about some investors/business people from China who built a large store like this one in Kenya to sell cheap Chinese products at a MUCH lower costs than the local Kenyan small business owners did. This resulted in the many of the small business owners losing their businesses because their former customers now shopped at the cheaper Chinese big box store. There were street demonstrations from these Kenyan small business owners AND the Kenyan people in general who were concerned about the Chinese influence in their country. The Kenyan politicians heard the people, and they shut down the Chinese-owned big box store! I wonder IF this will happen in Ghana when/if the small business owners are negatively affected? 🤔🤔
@elaine smith -Nope, the family is from India and came to Ghana when it was the Gold Coast, and thanks for the comment 😊!
@@ExpatLifeGhana Thanks for the info, but WHY aren't the Ghanians doing something like this AND what is going to happen to the mom and pop street vendors? Will this put them out of business? If so, that would be a tragedy. 🤔🤔👎👎

,,, so this while vid is basically cheerleading the corporate intrusion of Ghana, from US monopolies,,,
I'm sure this is going to be great.
It always is, which is why Ghana needs to buy gold from it's own goldmines, to exchange for oil to UAE.
This must be great, because everything that makes consumers happy, is good.
,,,, pretty sure that mall won't take many customers from the other malls, but at least some oligarchs get happy. Keep up the good blissful assistance to the people of Ghana. No doubt they'll benefit from the benevolent cohort.

Melcom is Indian owned and they’ve been in Ghana for almost half a century. They have several super centers. I believe there are 2 or 3 similar of their stores in other parts of Accra and Kumasi.
Malcom is opening up in most cities or towns in ghana. Ghanaians can do even more, but they like to stick to their old small stores. It's annoying.
