Music Visualization: Mute Math - Reset (HD)

- One day I heard the song Reset by Mute Math and I liked it a lot. Then I thought 'Hey, I'm learning After Effects! Why not make a music video?'
This video took me a few days to make. However, this wasn't nonstop working. I'd put in a few hours every day. I am quite proud of it, as it is one of the few videos I have actually finished. There is no plot, no anything; just shapes and colors to the beat of the music.
[TECH STUFF]
Rendering took 3 and a half hours in AE CS4. When it was done, however, the file size was 25.5gb. I couldn't do much with a 25gb file (I couldn't even watch it without lag), so I used DivX to compress it to 164mb with absolutely no noticeable quality loss (how DivX does it, I don't wanna know...). That's about 21 times smaller, for all you math enthusiasts (no pun intended).
Just sit back and enjoy the ride :)
UPDATE:
A number of people have requested that I offer download links to the video, so if you go over to Vimeo you can download it from there:

WTF?!! You have a video wit almost a million views?!! You keep suprising me bro. This is dope. So Trippy!
This shit was fucking awesome, it had me straight vibin'. Oh and when the beat stopped for a second I was like " whoa this is intense ! " keep up the good work.
Drum solo :D was epic
I hope you make more of these...this is exactly the kind of thing I see in my mind when I listen to music.
video is AMAZING . I wasn't expecting the video to be much, but it was AMAZING
Very very nice! One of the best songs Mutemath made!
This video literally blew my mind.
Very unique, very nice... you've gotta start it and stick with it. Worth it.
good song choice reset is sick. went perfect with your video.
can't wait for a part two
breathtaking!
@liquos I look very much forward to it. I project your video on my wall as an exhibit each time have guests in my apt. and they all are very impressed!
Thursday afternoon Monday morning podcast OVAH HYEAHHHH
lol u had me scared for a second, this is my all time favortie video on youtube
i love the transition from 2d to a 3d wall, that is so sick
love this song and good job the visual effects!
Awesome... I really like the change after 3:53
That is basically what happened with me. I was at a bus stop and I was listening to this song, and I didn't close my eyes but I started to "ignore" my vision (daydream) and this is what I ended up seeing, so I made a video.
I am absolutely, unconditionally, in LOVE with your mind.
♥
forever changed, but I am so grateful! ☺☻
This was very impressive, however the circles blinking like crazy was driving me crazy. I feel like it could've went smoother than that? Something that wouldn't cause epilepsy.
holy crap... badass vid liquos! i think id die if i was high though. that water ripple part was tight, make some more vids!
great work dude,
i appreciate the effort you put in to make a lot of people space out!
MMO-Champ sent me here
Lovin it.
my fav part is from 2:24 - 2:56.. i wish i knew how to do this for my beats. I cant even find courses or tutorials to do exactly this. But, the whole vid is a dime.
Nicely done!
So amazing track and video!!! awesome!!!
it was a different experience ... thank you dear liquos... you made my highness even higher :)
great work man this is awesome :)
You sir, are badass. I would love to see some more of your work if there is any.
@Reketh Funny thing is, I'm not a master at all. I just got real inspired by this song, and a great idea can often trump great skill. After Effects is one of those programs with lots of "make it cool" buttons. In a program like 3ds max, you may know how to make a simple scene with boxes and lights after a week of learning, but in After Effects you press 5 buttons and everything looks cool.
I've always loved videos synced to music. I think the problem with most music videos today is that they don't have any synchronization or "mood" with their music. Whenever I listen to music, I'd occasionally get really solid idea for a video. The problem is that I don't have a camera
I watched your video and I thought it was quite well done. It had some really great camera angles.
I'm not much Mute Math fan though; in fact, I only found out about this song from a youtube comment on another song
MAN if i was on ecstasy this wud be a trip
its damn trippy
amazing video.
dude, nice work. Which programs are u using? Doing some work in that area myself.
the whole things a Giant Mind fuck, And its so Amazing! Dude you did a Fantastic job.
I love you for the video. AMAZING, just amazing.
One of my absolute favorite Mutemath songs
Great! I tried to make each part as eye-catching as possible, but it got kinda hard towards the end, so the wiggly sphere thing was a kind of last-attempt.
This helped me through calculus. Thank you.
4:38 really awesome
dude i fucking love you man
Right on, this is awesome :P
Congrats, looking good
fucking awesome. and i appreciate your work. straight to favourites!!
oh I forgot to add this. is my second fav vid on youtube by far. Its only second to ---> (Hundred Beanie Dreams - (Zaylien H3H3 Remix) -=Official Video=-) love it.
Well everything but the "dancing" of the circles was manually keyframed. The circle's size itself was based on the bass and treble of the song. Also, the pink waveform and rippling sphere near the end were purely music-driven. Apart from that, it was just lots of expressions and keyframes (especially the "easy ease" keyframes). I used the graph editor quite a bit too, to get the movement speeds and "bounces" I wanted.
Amazing stuff! I got chills.
If I wanted to learn how to use After Effects (and I'm already very familiar with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign) what books or websites would you recommend to start learning with?
@liquos I'm a musician and I've always been keen on the idea of music visualization. I watched your video patiently and read all the description and first of all I should say I appreciate the work. There are some great moments in the video.. Two thumbs up.
But it lacks an overall composition. It's not going from somewhere to elsewhere and imo music visualization should be more about the melody as you wrote in the description yours is more about the beat.. You can maybe use the colors to do that
@NightTranceDay The Roots of Orchis, and Little People, are two other artists that i would deem somewhat similar
This video is a religious experience.
@themegapepita Yeah, go ahead. And this song is by a band called "Mute Math" - it isn't really related to math at all, unless you count any of the expressions used in it.
O.M.G
Hey, I love your visualisation. Do you mind if I use a section of it.
I've put a link to your video and given ou full credit to the visualization.
thx
This video is trippy as fuck, I was watching it and my mum came in and thought I was doing drugs. I told her it was just youtube. The fucked up thing is my mum died two years ago and I don't even own a computer.
12 people don't like having their minds blown.
nice video. Getting that typographic feel from it. I would probably smooth the frames a bit though as they are *very* responsive to the point that it's more akin to flickering than reshaping the geometries based on the spectra. Personal preference though I guess :)
I just want to say this was fucking amazing..... on E
we're big fans!
Awesome
Oh wow, haven't visited this page in a while and I'm surprised with how many views I've got.. cool!
And yeah, I fixed the download link, should work fine now.
fuckking simple and awesome. gj mate
Very good and creative ;)
Thanks :P
dayemm...i like it!....xD
Soo totally watching this whwn i try acid for the first time:D
Everything In Its Right Place kinda feel to it yeah?
I wasn't sure what kept drawing me to this song like a moth to a flame, then I read this comment. It's the "Everything in it's Right Place" feel to it.
yup so true
SUN BEAST
Yea dude, now every time I listen to this I find myself constantly repeating "yesterday I woke up suckin' a lemon..."
Not sure about that but I love that song too
sooooo many polar curves...
gooooooooooooooooooood
thumbs up if youre here coz of the virts
Andrew Gunady ayyyyyyyyy
Arrg, it seems that none of the websites are reliable enough to download this video. It's alright though, I've found a nice website that provided some links so NOW it should finally work
i wanna explore music like this, whats it called ?????????????
@hollohill Hmm, I am not too sophisticated with compression, so I'll ask: do I need a specific type of codec to be able to control the bitrate? Also, what is h.264?
FAanfuckintastic!!!
Next time, try MPEG-4 h.264 with a 2000 kb/s bitrate. Nice looking and tiny. :D
Is there anyway I caaaan get this on my ipod? Pretttty please !!!!
I always sleep while listening to my ipod.... and a lot of times i have dreams that look like the shit in this video... crazy
@NightTranceDay try Boards of Canada or maybe Squarepusher
MMO-Champ? I assume it is some forum for MMORPG games?
If u want more visualization watch the virts:test room.they use this song their vid is awesome
@blargwee Architecture is in 5/4...
And thanks!!!
what is the song?
Can anyone else recommend something similar from other artists?
download link broken :(
im so high
I would put this song in a movie scene where the protagonists arm themselves with weapons and do a very difficult mission, but for them this task is child's play. Everything goes clean and fast......
This is fantastic to watch n listen when having a good smoke and/or on LSD Acid. It's two unusual experiences, I love it.
@liquos nice job on the visuals man!
Watching this 5 days before the year 2020 and I will be back many times after. lol
Wow your so cool
Cheerz, I try best I can. lol
Yo Liquos, u still alive?
Yup! Still around. I just don’t make UA-cam videos anymore. Maybe I’ll come back to it one day.
@@liquos ight i'll just keep you in the book anyway
2021 😎👌...see you in 2041
@augusto975 Ahh, I've been so loaded with schoolwork lately that I haven't been able to make anything new. I do have a few ideas, however, and come the next big break (summer) I might make some nice things (or maybe before that :D)
@liquos oh i just remembered session, heard that track looooong time ago. THanks for reminding me again haha
I really wouldn't care. I didn't make this so I can show off my editing. I made it because I liked this particular song a lot and wanted to do something more with it. This is why "using a free song" (as many people have suggested to me) wouldn't work.
"so I used DivX to compress it to 164mb with absolutely no noticeable quality loss". What about the FPS? There is often where i dont really see how the animation really is,it just pumps kinda epileptic
Yeah, I wouldn't be using after effects today if it wasn't for video copilot. And yes, I did use that specific tutorial.
Awesome, dude. A lot of preset effects used, but very creative nonetheless. 5'd and 'scribed.
I love how people see pretty pictures and think there's no math involved. Guys, even if the author of this video didn't design all of these effects, there's some pretty serious math involved. Even just blurring effects are based on Gaussian distribution. The first patterns looks like a map of the regular cartesian coordinate plane to a wave function... which then formed standing waves... and that oscillating bubble toward the end? How is this not math?
Looks great! The song sounds like a really long radiohead intro, which is fine by me.
My sister showed me this song when i was about 17, I fucking loved it, and i completely forgot the artist since loosing my old mp3 player. I just described what it sounded like to her, and she said mutemath and i was like FUCK AFTER YEARS I HAVE IT. :D
@NightTranceDay A good thing to do is sign up for/onto Pandora radio (Google it) and create a station for Mute Math.
I discovered this song on my Animals As Leaders station. Lots of ambient awesomeness, that station.
@liquos I've heard lots, actually. Check out Bonobo, Blockhead, Amon Tobin, Tippy, Cujo, Boards of Canada, Main Squence, Tycho, Blueprint... and a whole bunch others if you want.
Could just check out my favorites.
I agree with the first statement. Maybe contact mutemath? have them use this as their real video. It will be really cool cause i mean it's an instrumental. So a video made with only different color of lights would be awesome.
