The effect is difficult to perform. It is not just a compilation of easy to do sleights or self working principles. For instance within the first minute he performs a ribbon spread, mutiple shift, a pressure fan, a classic pass, and he runs up the ladder. That's only the first minute after that I count 28 intermediate to advanced sleights that are performed. David Blaine might perform 3-5 sleights in a card routine of his. This may be the most complicated trick that you have both seen ;)
When he said "I'll give you a fair chance to catch me out" As he's saying it he's putting the cards into the box right in front of them and they didn't cop it😘😹👌💕
One of those routines that even when you know all the sleights, it's still a joy to watch. Even after multiple viewings, you can still find yourself getting fooled by the card under the box. 4:24 is one of the least technical sleights in the whole routine, but so unbelievably effective. Crazy to know that Derren was an unbelievable card magician before he became one of the greatest mentalists of all time.
I love that at the exact moment he says 'I'll give you a chance to catch me out', he is sleight of handing something under the box and nobody notices. Great stuff.
That one where he count to number 14! I remember doing that over and over again! Perfect sleight! I love it! Watching this makes me miss doing card tricks! :-/
@@derekdoonkin3826 I think i just hit a wall. There came a stage where i had to choose between focusing my time on music or magic and i chose music. I l still love magic though! Especially close up card magic!
Aye, I love his psychological magic and the way he's taken it to greater heights. The near propless performances are incredible (see his lecture as to why, I agree and aim for the same in my mentalist tricks - no stooges, all forces are verbal or physical not visual) but his conjuring is still above most people's out there and more importantly, he presents it well, he knows he is amazing them and giving them a thrill. It's about how much THEY enjoy it for him, not how good he is.
yeah , he also reveals it just after he performs it in this video, i cut it though because i don't want any exposure, He also reveals tons of other card tricks like "smoke" etc
Its not been removed! Go to the merchandise page on his website, scroll to the bottom and there is a link called "Magicians Only". You have to put in a secret magic password but it takes you through the page and the DVD is £40 (with £5 delivery) :)
Let's say good enough to perform for my friends. To get as smooth as Derren's performance would take a ridiculously long time I'm sure (if it's even possible for me).
Well it depends if you already know the basics... Double Lifts, Palming cards, Use of Misdirection etc. If you have those mastered, then a couple of hours to just connect them all to make a routine. If you still have to master those, then weeks until you can perform smoothly.
It's actually quite simple, believe it or not. It's a few basic sleights and 1 very, very handy "little" card, if you know what i mean, lol. The most difficult part of the routine is the psychological stop (the part where he starts dealing cards and then says "just say stop whenever you like". But there's an out for that if it doesn't work. I'm still amazed by how often that works! It's so powerful as a stand alone piece! And you can go for it at the start of every effect and if it works you have gold, and if it doesn't work you can just do any number of other effects where you don't need to force a card.
@@BenL0253 I understand where you're coming from, but i don't think it really matters how long ago a comment was made on UA-cam because i was only replying to encourage beginners who have only just seen this that they would be able to perform this.
BS you got everything except for the deck vanish. Why lie? If you knew everything else, then the deck vanish would have been simple for you. Especially the one where he counts 14 cards to get the spectators card. If you knew how he did that, you would know how he vanished the cards.
Roughly 10-20 hours. At the very most. If you can do the sleights performed then it's just a case of putting them together. The hardest part is the spelling of the card. You have to thumb count (spell) the name of the card, and talk at the same time. That's what takes the most practise. It's really hard to spell and count in your mind, while also talking. That part alone probably takes at least 5 hours continues practise. Maybe more. Actually, you also have to get lucky with the "just say stop whenever you like" part - AKA The Psychological Stop. It's 90% likely to happen, but if it doesn't work then there's a way around it. Doesn't look as clean, or as good, but there's a way around it.
There's so much more going on here! It's been about 10 years for me since i've preformed this, but here's a list of what i remember off the top of my head from 10 years ago. This is in order. 1. Short card work (used several times throughout the routine). 2. Controlling cards to the top. 3. Haunted deck - not giving that one away. 4. Double lift. 5. Almost a Tenkai palm, but crossed with a steal. Tenkai steal, it might be called, i honestly can't remember. 6. Misdirection. 7. Top change (you need misdirection to do the top change so i'm not going to mention misdirection again. Just take misdirection as a given when we can rewind and see what's happening). Misdirection is the magician's *greatest* skill, bar none! To be continued....

I nearly died from laughter! :D xx

His mis direction combined with unique sleights are just powerful

Yeah try not to spoil it tho ffs
Yet he still doesn't refer to himself as a mentalist
I love that at the exact moment he says 'I'll give you a chance to catch me out', he is sleight of handing something under the box and nobody notices. Great stuff.
"NOOO IT MAKES NO SENSE!!" Love it!
A true master at work ! The first time he puts the cards under the case is a lesson in timing and misdirection all of its own. Unreal.
I love this effect. I could watch Derren Brown all day :)
Best part is 5:55 when he pretends to look for Stuarts card. Such a subtle misdirection
Impromptu or premeditated magic...either way his sleight of hand and mis direction are underrated and simply beautiful and amazing
Holy ****. Derren's chops are unbelievable.
My god his performance is smooth and flawless, incredible to watch.
best trick ive seen this yr on utube well my opinion the best
I love this routine! I practised it for many many hours! It's one of my favourite 'tricks'!'

Why did you ever stop
Come back brother

I love the fact that even when he shows them it's a false cut he's like "you agree that's fair right?" And they all agree until he corrects them 😂

Ha- he explains this trick and the psychology involved in his funny book 'confessions of a conjuror'- well recommended
Or The Devil's Picture Book DVD - which is were i learnt it.
Exactly-it';s not about what he does but rather how he does it.
VERY good at diverting attention
"we don't have a queen here, despite the fob watch and waist coat" Win sir, win.
LOVED IT!
Beautiful to watch.
Why upload it at 240p? As a wise man once said "It makes no sense!"

well that was just incredible...
I saw the cards go in the box! Horay
awesome..!
Such a great line :L I don't think they even caught on to what he was suggesting :P
i think it is powerful !
it is still on sale at his store :)
@deadmanavir Yeah but i cant seem to find the devils picture book anywhere, its not on the derren brown official store
@deadmanavir Aw, removed. I picked up Devil's Picturebook five or six years ago. It's a gem. Hunt for it, and don't stop looking.

Yep. He's essentially using basic sleight of hand tricks. But the way he puts them all together to make a routine is beautiful!
This was my favourite routine to perform about 10 years ago was i was deep into magic! MY favourite to practise as well because it kept me sharp!
@BenL0253 Right ... i believe he got it removed !
hands down, the most complicated card trick in the world.....if only there was a way of learning it

do you know where i can get the devils picture book? amazon?
I got everything except in the end all the cards in his hands are disappeared
Rahul Kanchan Gaikwad he slid them out of his hand into his lap when he covered them up near the edge of the table

For performance? Or time it would take to master it?
alot of my idea are aqquired from this vid actually before I saw this but I obviously know he did them before i did. lol
Oh my goodness O__O
@tulocco The Devils Picturebook ...
Any experts want to estimate how long it would take to be able to perform this?

watch my take on this-steelaces13, 3 cards performance
to be fair....thats a good thing :L why would you want to spend money just to figure it out? and look smart :P
its just palming, and misdirection

im only 13 years old and i can perform that. its not that hard that it looks
needs lot of miss direction
