Totally agree on the variety versus mastery! Hadn't thought about it until you said it though :D
Quack :) - nice video! Enjoyed your thought on the game!
Thank you!
I Looooove this series. Great job.
Good video, I'm backing too after regretting not backing the initial one. Another pro I'd like to add are the inserts.
Good inserts for boardgames really can't be overlooked, they can save so much setup time and also money trying to improve the storage solution.
Seems they are adding a great variety of enemies in the Tanares kickstarter, and it seems they might become more distinct.
Yep, I'm hoping so!
@MrTrainerGuy1 I'll wait for the pledge manager to see what I will get once I know what it's all going to cost + shipping.
Base game, heroes and dungeons expansion and the Tanares adventures at the least.
Dragon package seems like a huge waste of money and space though so that's an easy skip. One dragon in the basegame is enough for me.
Great review thanks! What do you think about playing solo? Is it worth it? Or ends up being too complex/time consuming? (If you had played solo 😄)
Hi, im thinking in buying this (kickstarter bundle 2018) or zombicide invader (with the 2 expansions) for the solo experience, wich one you recomend?
If you don't like the AI in this game, beside S&S, what other AI do you like? How is it compared to Gloomhaven?
The dice aspect of this game initially really bothered me as well. I’ve been thinking about that aspect a lot. What I concluded was, the die stops the cards from being only deterministic. The die introduces an element of doubt, that this is not a forgone conclusion. Although the odds are in favor of the one rolling. I think that’s why you don’t mind it as much as you could. And that’s why I decided get this game.
I’m a full backer for this game, every “con” you mentions is not a con to me and my gaming group, especially this thing about math, we have a lot of games where we do quick math to see what we need to do, like Gloomhaven. I cannot wait to play this game with the new updates minis
Thanks for this perspective, thumbs up. I went all in on the current kickstarter based off of good word of mouth, but the more I learn about it the worse it looks to me. I keep watching vids hoping to see something that makes it click and look good.
You mentioned you got rid of S&S, how do you compare that with this? S&S looks 1000x better to me than Arena (especially the upcoming expansion) but I haven't played each to compare.
Or if you've played Massive Darkness? With just a few house rules MD is awesome and oozes style. More importantly it is just fast and really fun. Arena just looks so dull in comparison so curious if you can compare there at all?
MD is fun but the pacing is much slower. I own it but prefer Arena. S&S I enjoyed but got rid of, again because of pacing.
@@BoardGameCo thanks for the reply. Sounds like Arena plays fast. Unfortunately every day and with every update Tanares/Arena looks worse to me. Still in for now, but I'm struggling to find something about it that I like
@@sethpeterson8261 I hear. As someone who also likes MD you might like it...but as someone who liked but still traded S&S...you might not. For what it's worth...nothing about the game initially pulled me in. It was a total pass for me. I played it and loved it, but it was an accident. Check out my video on my other channel for more details.
@@BoardGameCo I had watched your other video before I saw this one. I'm sure if I played it I would like the gameplay. And the overall quality seems high. But I don't think I can get around the art, narrative, hero designs, writing, lack of enemy minis etc... thanks again.
The AI was been improved in the new KS?
Is there a mechanism to play more than 4 players in the collaborative gameplay? My gaming group is usually only 4 players, but could be as many as 7 on a good week.
There doesn't seem to be in the core game, but in the new Tanares PVE expansion, they say the story will have 8 heroes total and split off with two teams of 4 in two different directions so maybe you can have two boards going at the same time and then meet back up?
Are still publishing this series or is it just the new? Other? Vidcasts?
1st time I've seen this series.
Qvack.
Alex has gotten pretty busy with his own channel but I think he may still drop one or two videos over here every now and then.
Finally a video that shows the flaws of this game. Thank you very much. Your cons are hugs problems to me. I really wonder why the hype about this game is so huge.
I love the game despite the cons but they are certainly cons. This was currently my 20th highest game of all time but that was with 2 plays under my belt when I made that list. I fully expect that to rise, possibly making top 10 in 2020.
It seems that the flaws could be a huge problem for me too... It sounds like the skills and traits play out very in a very thematic way and on the other side there is this uninspired enemy behaviour etc. I wonder if the expansion does adress/improve this problems...?
@vann tedd Not sure, I like a lot of mini games but haven't played that many campaign ones. Arena is likely my favorite so far.
Where is that link that was suposted to be down below? 00:41
Whoops! Thanks, espenfr. It's in the description now and just for ease of use here it is too ua-cam.com/video/O4sJxmJUx9w/v-deo.html
@@BoredOnlineBoardOffline thanks
Small cons, it seems. At least for me.
Agreed!
How would Chronicles of Drunagor compare with this one?
Good question. I’m not familiar with Chronicles but Alex might be. He’ll probably be along checking comments in the near future.
They have nothing in common. I played both and their systems are completely different.
@@JambalayaPlaysGames I'd go with Jambalaya :) I backed Chronicles but they don't look the same.
@@JambalayaPlaysGames If only one could be backed during the late pledge, in your opinion, which one is better for primarily solo play?
What other game would you compare the campaign to ? I haven’t seen much how it worked so I dropped my pledge . For me I don’t care about p vs p .. games I like . Gloomhaven ,galaxy defender , hell boy , city of kings , zombicide, resident evil , sword and sorcery .
Likely most similar to Gloomhaven or S&S from the ones I've played. It's less a giant unraveling narrative adventure and more a fun progression, although decisions you make can have an impact later.
Seems like most of the cons are being fixed with the expansion
A bunch of them yes, I know the minis are better and they're adding more models for enemies, I don't know whether they are improving the enemy AI.
Good explanation. But at least show us how the game looks
We try to keep this series short and to the point, but that does mean less of how the game looks unfortunately.
So glad that I'm not backing this one
What are your reasons?
