  • A great program but without too many triples. Robin was having his second round of knee cartiledge problems here. By Worlds in Tokyo that year his knee was blown yet he managed to make it through the SP by doing certain elements on the opposite leg. Robin was always a very good spinner in both directions. However his luck ran out in the LP where he felt his knee go again and despite throwing himself into a flying camel to try and get himself going again, he ended up withdrawing mid program by practically crawling off the ice.
    By the way his coach is identified by Phyllis George here as being Gladys Hogg. It's not. The lady with him is actually Joan Slater - Nicky Slater of Dancing on Ice Fame's Mother.

    Such a beautiful program. With only one triple. But the skating was so good it didn't really matter. That's what skating should be about, much as I love the triples.

    Curry and Cousins, back when figure skating was an east-west gliding beautiful sport. Now it’s become a north-south jumping competition. Up down, up down and up-down. Pity! The beauty has gone!

    You see Joan Slater as she is today - this was 1977 and over 30 years ago. I used to skate at the old Altrincham Ice Rink in the 1970's and I can assure you that Floskate is correct - that is Joan Slater with Robin in the kiss n cry. By the way, if you skate at Deeside you'll probably know my old trainer from the late '70s early '80s when I skated at Blackpool - Angela Hilton.

    Yet another classic from the archives by the wonderful floskate - have you got 1978 Europeans long from Strasbourg?

    This isn't his best technically but it is still amazing to me from the clip of Kovalev's program that he came from behind to pass Cousins for 2nd.

      The commentator got it wrong. Robin was in 4th place before the free skate at '77 Europeans. He had been 7th in figures, 2nd in the short (to Jan) and he was 2nd in the free (again to Jan). Before the free Robin was lying in 4th behind Kovalev, Hoffmann and Pekka Leskinnen who had been 3rd in figures. Therefore, Robin overtook Pekka to get the bronze while Jan overtook Vladimir to win gold.

    Has anyone ever seen video of his disastrous LP at Worlds that year?

    • @npe1
      @npe1 3 роки тому

      It wasn't so much disastrous as he had to retire part way through due to a knee injury.

      @@npe1 I would say getting badly injured in the middle of doing your program at Worlds is pretty disastrous.

      @@alexac3098 Possibly English isn't your first language, so I'll make allowances for you.
      When one uses the term 'disastrous' in the context of a free skating programme, it generally implies the skater skated badly or made a complete mess of things. In Robin's case, he merely had to withdraw during the slow section of his free programme due to a knee injury that had been affecting his performance for some time. He had tried to struggle on after he won bronze at the European Championships in 1977 but it was to no avail. Despite his knee being heavily strapped up for the free skate in Tokyo for '77 World's, his knee finally popped and he had to leave the ice barely being able to stand up, let alone land triple jumps.

      @@npe1 Wow, that's pretty rude of you to assume I'm not a native speaker (I am). Thank you, but I don't need your allowances. I am a skater myself, and while somewhat hyperbolic, I was using the word 'disastrous' in the context of having to retire at all. An elite skater becoming injured *in the middle of doing your program*, at Worlds, the most important competition of the year, would indeed be considered a disaster by that skater.
