An ace bandage wrapped around the mast and then painted with tool-dip will work. Apply several coats of the tool-dip to get a nice water tight seal. You can always renew the the coating under way by applying another coat. I used this method while cruising years ago and it held up for several years. Love your vids. Keep up the great work.
They make an expensive mast boot, that boots together at the back, so you can put it on while mast is on, but I have used all sorts of stuff, you just have to wrap it more times if you can't pull the mast. I've used 3+ wraps of thera-band physical therapy band, truck innertube, yoga mat, canvas painted with melted lard :-0, etc. Just make it long, multiple wraps around, so that there isn't a verticle seam, and clamp too and bottom like a fancy store bought boot. Good luck guys, you can do it!
Great videos guys. Thanks for sharing. One tip that is a bit late. Apple cider vinegar dissolves rust for cheap. Could have saved a good deal of work with the chain in the bilge.
Mast boot tape is simple, quick and non-messy way to seal the mast deck joint. It needs to be renewed regularly. The sun (UV rays?) eventually cook it. If you have bucks,it's cheap at $50 a pop. If you don't have bucks it's $50 for an overpriced 4 ft piece of rubber tape.
Hi Guy’s , For the leaky mast base you can use the rubber inner tube of a small car, Glue the ends together with tyre glue when executed properly it will last probably around a decade.
Perhaps not helpful, but I liked the statement from the "Swallows and Amazons" book; "A house is nothing so much as a boat that is so poorly made you would never think of taking it out to sea"....
Y Hi Like your vids . You know the wax rings you use to seat a toilet in your house . you can use those then cover that with something that looks good for a finish
Skip the mast boot tape, it's expensive and doesn't last. Go to Home Depot and pick up a couple of wax toilet bowl rings. You can stuff the wax rings around the mast where it passes through the deck and make it super water tight! Then just cut a small section of marine canvas and glue some velcro to each end. Wrap it around the mast base for looks only and velcro the ends together. Again, the canvas is only for looks to cover up the wax. I believe the wax rings around less than $4 each maybe?
The solar panels need to be further back as the boom will shade them and if a solar panel has a small bit of shade it dramatically reduces the power they produce.
Project Infinito That would be interesting, especially regarding the hetron and how long they used it, and how many boats were compromised and if blasting and barrier coating is a long-term solution.
That boat is getting tighter every day. You guys are inspiring!
Awesome to read that! Thank you for the words... hope to continue to inspire!

Thanks a lot for the tip and the words! Hope to keep entertaining!
I have spent months researching into constructing boats and found an awesome resource at Denelle Boat Builder (google it if you are interested)

totally agree, make sure the mast cannot move in the hole before using the wax or the wax gets squeezed out
Won't wax melt in hot sun?
It melts at about 150F to 160F In direct sun getting to that temperature seems possible. www.oatey.com/doc/MaxWax_Wax_Ring.pdf
Make sure you cover the hole with canvas boot or other similar boot. The idea is not to rely on the boot to seal the mast at the deck.
go diving at shallow local anchorages. you will find plenty of anchors. chain as well.
Just pick the fouled ones that are not connected to a vessel...

Seal the gap with tape from bottom and then pour epoxy from top
tá irado demais!!! Você de bigode tá parecendo a versão bonita do Darwin Deez hahaha
Caceta realmente que maluco sexy! Nao conhecia! haha
Valeu!!
What kind of boat
david corkum Looks like a Valiant 34, although it could be a 32 or 36, really hard to tell.
1978 Valiant 32!
Project Infinito Well, I was close.🙂
indeed! I should make a page on our website just about the boat. And a FAQs page as well...
