Something I just noticed while watching is that everything refers to/shows the parents having been dismembered but the corpses in the coffin appear whole from what we can see. When Fran sees herself killing her parents the mother's head is cut off, but in the coffin it's attached and doesn't look like it's just been sewn back on for the burial. Just adds more questions about what is or isn't real.

The way I always interpreted this detail was with the idea that Remor killed Fran's parents and twisted her memories to show her a false event. Yes, her parents were dead, but definitely not by her hands. Everything Remor did was just to twist her mind into the perfect state for the Doctors experiments. That's what I believe at least

@@hyablusa517 To extend that point, what if Fran was being told by her aunt that she(Fran) was the reason for her parents deaths, as "If they didn't want to protect you then they would have lived".
Furthermore, I believe that the 5 realities are real, but not at the same time. The 5 realities are projections of the soul, so they can bend and twist based on what strong souls are near. Duotine strengthens a users soul, allowing them to see the projected reality, even causing souls to remain after death.
Maybe they saw Mr midnight as a betrayal because he brought Fran happiness. And they thought that Frans parents gifting Mr midnight to Fran, as them being too attached to Fran. Since I'm just going to assume Frans parents knew eventually Fran would be used for experiments. And they figured that Frans parents had become top emotionally attached to Fran and they wanted to back out of the project and it enraged Dr Oswald, who ordered grace to drug Fran. And through the hallucinations caused by the drugs, Fran ended up killing her parents.
I think Grace was the murderer, maybe while she spent time with Fran, she may’ve been drugging her as well as giving her many nasty thoughts, eventually, she must’ve knocked Fran unconscious using drugs, giving her nightmares, Grace then killed Fran’s parents, and when Fran wakes up, she finds herself in the middle of that gory mess with knife in hand, spiraling her down into some sort of reverse denial, knowing she didn’t kill anyone, but all she remembers is awful imagery, so she’s ultimately fooled into thinking she legit did it in some blind violent outrage, and she may do it again at any point without her knowing
I don't think Fran killed them. Dismembering someone takes insane strength. Also it's mentioned that her parents were surgically cut up. So (I forgot her name) but another person must've done it.

aahhhh same !! I remember this game feeling so uniquely nightmarish and surreal the first time I watched a playthrough of it ,, and hearing songs from the ost (particularly The White Rabbit Question and When Things Are Said) makes all of those feelings come flooding back.

Idk if it’s a detail I missed, but I never got the impression she couldn’t open the door to her house due to her not having a body. It was a locked door. My brain went to the assumption that since the murders that it has been sold and someone else lives there now. It is not longer her home, it’s someone else’s now.
This is a tough one to explain. Every explanation leaves stuff out though.
Take Mia and Clara. How did they die? Dr Deern says they died shortly after they were sewn together. Itward says they killed each other while blaming him for their fate. Another letter says they hated each other and they killed each other out of spite. We see a tiny infant in a crib that has been sewn together and a picture of two old people sewn together. Dr Deern says they were sewn together "so Dr Oswald could see how it affected their DNA", yet blood transfusions had been a thing for over hundred years (1818) by this point. They know what would be the result. Much of it feels like a small girl who has no idea what is going on is putting things together based on her imagination and hearing conversations she does not quite understand. Or, maybe it is metaphorical and not meant to be taken literally. Or maybe it is all real, the veil between worlds grows weaker as ancient gods stir from the slumber of uncounted eons.
Fran Bow is cute and charming, but you are better off not trying to look too closely at the story. That way lies madness.

what about when returning the office key she took the pills and but them back with out the woman seeing. That could not have been a hallucination due to it having a effect to that realty, i think this proves that its not all about the pills.
By the way, the name "Remor" could be tied to the word "remord" in french which means regrets. It strengthen the theory.

The last scene I assume that Palontras or good doctor gave her an assisted death because he can't stand seeing her being experimented on anymore, freed her from suffering.
This story is so much deeper like I thought, but couldn’t completely understand because pieces I didn’t see in play throughs. I love R’s explanations and theories they really help to achieve theory closure.😊🤔

I feel that the different realities are both there and not there. Fran is clearly able to learn things that she didn't know previously and would be impossible for her to know. The part i believe is made up is the environments she enters to learn these things and are simply her young mind trying to make sense of the things she is experiencing.
I got myself thinking, What if she also was a twin, and saw her twin killing? like, with the medication, she thought that she was the killer, but was her twin?
I have no proof nor references on the game since I can't remember it properly, but just imagine the idea

This is one of the games I played in my childhood i remember playing the whole game when I was quite young but the release date makes no sense. Im 21 now and it feels like it was many many years ago. 🥶 it was fun but now that its been explained and the ending as well its like damn... thats crazy, I never thought much of it then but now. Idk
This really does remind me of Sephiroth cus ever since he was in his mother's belly when he was still and Embryo he got injected with JENOVA cells a parasitic entity that can poses people and control their minds and make them see what they want or what they do not want,it 1st comes to people as a friend in the image of a deceased family member or friend gains the people's trust and from there she starts posessing and manipulation people causing these people to become monsters,deadly blood thirsty monsters and when she is done with them she discards them as yesterdays trash.
this game reminds me of the promised neverland. I don't know if that holds up though because I couldn't get past the first episode. it made me feel sick. idk why it's different listening to people talk about it though but I can manage it better than watching

I always took the bleeding eyes being a reference to a lobotomy. Same with the skulls with holes in their heads down the well. I just figured Fran got lobotomised at the end. After all, they believed the procedure even when it left someone in a vegetative state was a success of sorts as they were no longer “suffering” from what ever they were trying to cure & that they were at peace & happier.

I gotta say, I'm not the biggest fan of the "mentally ill/ actually dead/ in a coma" type of premise because anything "deep" isn't really all that deep. They were just making it up in their mind. They were having a near death experience before dying. They were dreaming the whole time.
What I don't like is that it's basically a bunch of red herrings let loose at a park and the writers can be as vague and cryptic as they want. It's exactly like dream sequences where anything of consequence doesn't matter. They're still mentally ill and are coping. They are about to die. They're in a coma and might as well be dead, although they still have a chance to return to normal life in this one.
I don't remember much from this game but to me, any of the following three kind of weaken the story.
I think Oswald doesn't want Fran to have a pet because it's another connection that brings positive emotions which goes against the experiments.

Some of this actually makes a lot of sense especially when considering Little Misfortune, namely the idea of Fran being in a coma and having to find some sort of acceptance in order to pass into the afterlife, as some journals and other texts in Little Misfortune suggest that certain figures, like the fox or maybe even Mr. Midnight, are actually GUIDING lost spirits to the afterlife, and protecting them from evil entities that wish to take them somewhere else.
I'd say the third theory of the worlds and monsters being real because of a tiny little game called Little Misfortune.
Little Misfortune takes place in the same universe Fran Bow does and due to certain information plus the twist found at the end of the game it very much leans into the supernatural worlds and creatures (like Itward) being real.

I saw a playthouh of little misfortune, and the second I saw Itward I had a feeling it was all connected in some way!
I'm pretty sure that Fran didn't kill her parents: are you (game creator) really gonna tell me that a 10 years old little girl was able to kill two adults without none of them tried to stop her, and that she was strong enough to cut them into pieces with a simple knife?
Fran's parents weren't asleep to she could catch them by surprise, they were awake and at least one of them could stop her in time.
To cut arms, legs and heads with a knife is very difficult, it gets a lot time and I doub that Fran has such strength... so if that is a difficult matter, split a person in two is imposible for her.
To try to make logic in an otherwise surreal and dark story that has no clear narrative is kinda pointless because all you can do is speculate on what happened.

Some of us are just like this: always asking why, always trying to know how things work, always being as logical as posible (and emotional too XD).
But besides my personality's traits, I think that the creator of the game left some real clues for us.
I don't think that everything in this story is pure ambiguity, because if it would be like that we could just say that all the game was just a Fran's terrible nightmare or that she died the same night that her parents and cat and she's in the limbo trying to put orden into her mind before go to Heaven XD
We must trust and assume that some things are narrated in an objective way (like the death of her family, the experiments, the mental assylum), if not... well, this would be madness.
Plus when we see the grave the skeletonslook whole,even if someone sowed the bodies together it would not fix the bones.

Let's imagine that the asylum theory is correct. If Fran was raised in an asylum
and her 'house' was just a figment of her imagination, then why did Grace ask the doctor to take her 'home', when there was no home? She couldn't have been pretending to say that, because she didn't know that Fran was listening in to the conversation, right?
2 years late to this comment but Fran Bow got ported to Xbox so I finally got to play it on my own so-
If that theory is the correct one, then perhaps that conversation wasn't exactly real. (Remember Fran takes the pills to even see this conversation in game) so perhaps she did overhear grace and the doctor speaking, but due to being high on her pills, did not understand, and filled in the blanks with what she wanted to hear, which was to go "home" as Grace was likely used to keep Fran in check, a spring board if you will for her delusions of a happy home, which likely were used to bring Fran back to a baseline over her youth as not to break her too soon. So she sees/hears Grace insisting Fran needs to go home, and villainizing the doctor further, increasing her agony.
is there a chance that leon could be itward? in the picture of him being hung he looks like the skeleton and when he gets into the world between conscious and unconscious itward is the only creature he doesn’t meet. he also knows about the fact that he can kill the kamalas with water. the only other character who knows this information is itward. he relieves that the only way he can leave the world is to become friends with the creatures or even being them. this might also be the reason why clara and mia dislike him. if itward is in fact leon then they could possibly blame him for what happened because he physically did carry out the experiment. in the other world he realises his errors and tries to make them see the good of it but they don’t listen to him. the fact that he’s the only adult that’s managed to get to the other world he might have been given the role of guiding kids to light. the visions of the cats were flash forwards to let itward know about another patient was going to join him in the reality. this also shows that oswald thought that fran was special so in that world she was also special. this could mean that possibly leon knew about fran going to be part of the experiment when he was going insane so knew that he also had to save her. this is why he knew about her situation. he also helps her deal with pain and guilt as he personally had experienced it as an adult and knew she couldn’t fight on her own. also in the photo of the nurses and oswald leon is the only doctor not still visible in the hospital anymore. i think he must’ve died due to an overdose of duotine or maybe in fact killed himself when he was supposedly stopped. he is now living in the other reality. he is also quite tall, not as tall as itward looks but he is the tallest in the photo so that could allude to itwards involvement. i don’t believe anyone is going to read this but it seems like an interesting theory and i don’t think anyone has said it yet!

i think they're real, in little misfortune, the use of the 5 realities happen again but this time only with the 4th reality, where both itward and benjamin originate from, i think it's simply that the 3rd reality is the one most disconnected to the other realities, and when one dies or with the use of duotine, they can access the other realities

I still come across stories of rampant abuse, murder & suicide in those places. Investigations that go nowhere, because no one really cares about the people in these places.
I believe that everything has to be real, or at least a vast majority of it is real. Several people having the exact same hallucination is basically impossible. Even if they take the same drug, a hallucinogenic is a hallucinogenic, it doesn't control what you hallucinate.

I find it hard to believe a little girl could cause all that damage to two full grown adults with just a butcher knife. I think Grace was the real killer and Remur was lying to try and break Fran.
I think that her parents were already killed or dismembered somehow, and Fran had stumbled upon them, and with Remor’s manifestation of the insecurity and paranoia Fran might have finished them off with the knife or stabbed their already dead bodies
Kinda like the idea she never left the asylum. It's so dark. Terrible.
Though it turns this whole adventure into a kind of 'making peace with yourself and your life before passing on' deal. Which goes interesting with Little Misfortune, where she has to safely find her way to the afterworld after being tricked and killed by evil forces, escaping her unkind world in the process.

I can't believe I only just now realized this..!
Of course water would cause the Kamala to react that way. Water, is a universal sign of rebirth. So perhaps after being given or exposed to water, the Kamala is exposed to a rebirthing process- Which turns them into those lighter beings. The Valokas.
Something I noticed is that Fran's clothes are a combination of the straitjacket and the yellow dress you see in her closet later in the game, you can even see the belts in her back.
Does this mean she's been held in a straitjacket through the whole journey?
I really don’t think it happened in her head. There’s too many things that doesn’t add up, like how Fran unchained herself, or how she knew of information that she wouldn’t have any access to like the twin’s hatred of their mother or Oswald’s plan

i think that when fran goes to “heaven” that she isn’t in a coma but rather having a near death experience.
The name of profesor León shouldn't be spelled as "lí-on": león means lion in spanish, yes; but león is spelled as le-ón (the "le" of lemon and the "ón" of turn on).
When an accent (á, é, í, ó, ú) appears over a letter, this one must be pronounced with strength, that's what accents are for.

I think that, with Little Misfortune in mind, everything both happened and was in her mind. While she couldn't have created all of that herself, with the help of Duotine, she could perceive the other realities and even go into them. When inside the well, if you take the pills on the 2nd floor, she will actually fall down, as she was standing on what would be thin air, bun on another reality wasn't.
The being on those other realities actually exist and, in the super reality, the human perception just goes crazy and can't really get everything together correctly, despite things actually being there, so you get those trippy visuals. Things to note as well are the missing pages in the journal being found on Little Misfortune, which would be wild for another kid to imagine something Fran imagined, in sync.
I wanna believe that fran bow didn't kill her parents and dismembered them, remember she's just a child. They, are adults, they are stronger than fran. My theory is that Aunt Grace hates her sister just like clara and mia situation, she was jealous coz her sister found happiness and love, while aunt grace did not. Aunt grace then told Oswald that Her sister betrayed them. Then proceeds to either Aunt grace killing her parents and tell fran that she killed them, or Oswald hired someone to kill fran's parents to avoid spreading information about his asylum, after that, Oswald told lies to fran that she killed em'. Another theory is that "Remur" prince of darkness, is just a hired man cosplaying as remur to manipulate people into believing negative thoughts, it's a way to attack people mentally. I really hope matpat will make a theory about this... Also, good video!
Considering Little Misfortune having many of the same elements expanded upon, and the fact that the state of the five realities has changed due to events that happened before Misfortune, I believe that what happened was real.

Well, reality is our perception of things. So even if it wasn’t real, it was still real.
Okay, I've loved Fran Bow ever since I watched Jacksepticeye's playthroughs of it in 2016, I've only just realised that Remor is a suedonym for remorse. He is the manifestation of the fear, guilt, anger sadness etc. Fran experience's because she's remorseful that she killed her parents (unknowingly) under the influence of Doctor Oswald, Aunt Grace and the duotine.
i want to believe that she got out, that mr. midnight didn't die. that all of it is actually real. But im not so sure now.
Although I agree with most of this theory I just wanted to add my own thoughts on whether the characters like itward are real or not.
I think that they are real and exist in a different reality and itward and mr midnight who might possibly be a hallucination or a spirit of her cat to lead her to the other side or heaven. The reason I think this is from the second game the creator made called little miss fortune. At the end of the game we see familiar characters from this game like the beetle pig and itward. This is in a sort of in between to the after life. This could be where strange entities lead children to the afterlife and away from there suffering like how Benjamin does for little miss fortune in the second game.
This is just my theory but I think it explains some things.
Theory:
Remore and Margo (Little Misfortune) are brothers (whether just them or not) and they both chase after children. Both attacking the child's emotions. Remore does this in visions and dreams while Margo does this through a game. Itward and Benjamin (Little Misfortune) are both protectors of children chosen by Remote and Margo.
I can't believe it took me this long to realize that Kamalas and Valokas are literally words from the finnish language. Kamala meaning awful and valo in Valokas meaning light, so someone or something that is bright.

I don't agree the fifth reality being a construct of the drug:
the boy in the asylum mentions "he" does not allow him to help her. How can different people's incarnation of Remur cooperate with one another if they're only a construct of our imagination? Also how did Fran bow know dr.deern's dad abused him?
I don't agree with Fran dying that early in the story:
After Fran bow escapes the asylum into the hedge maze, we see the guard alive walking over and then walking back to the asylum. With this I only believe Fran bow dies when she is shot and her brain is experimented on.
Perhaps without Fran bows spirit, Oswald's experiments turn out to be a failiure
I do agree Mr midnight is probably dead. Grace may have gotten another black cat, the skeletal remains, or just a construct in Fran bows head.

You have some really good theories on this. I love the complexity and attention to detail in this game. I can't help but feel terrible for Fran. The poor girl can't catch a break. She just wants to live a good life with her loving parents and loving cat, but can't for all these crazy doctors. You are very historically accurate about the whole human experiment thing. The only thing I have to question is the ultra-reality. You make many valid points that it could be all in Fran's mind, but there's something that doesn't agree with that theory. Why, if other people are taking this drug, can others see the exact things that Fran sees? Aren't hallucinations and the kamalas based on personal experience and interperations of reality? When Fran freed Doctor Deern, he sees the exact scene and "hallucination" that Fran sees. I doubt that everybody who consumes this drug have the same experience. But yes, saying all of this was real seems surreal itself. Perhaps the other realities exist, and duotine is a drug that expands the human mind to the extent they can understand these realities. Remor says he can't be seen in the third reality. Perhaps, because this was around WW2, that humans had made a drug with such psychological affect that people were able to comprehend the concept of these other realities? WW2 was a popular time for drug and human experimentation, it could check out.
Actually I started to think about what happened to Aunt Grace and Dr. Oswald when Itward kind of push them off, like back to Dr. Marcel theory. Even though it was too late to save Fran, I imagine that he successfully bring justice for her and that the part where Itward save Fran were the police that arrested Aunt Grace, Dr. Oswald, and every staff member for their crimes.
This is my theory on what happened to Aunt Grace and Dr. Oswald when Itward saved Fran.
With Little Missfortune, it's pretty much confirmed that the Five Realities and the monsters reside within (Remor, Mother Mabuka, Itward, etc) are also real.
I don't buy that everything that happened in Fran Bowe to be all in her mind. Yes there's a lot of stuff that is, but because other people can see the same thing as Fran is not one of those things that people who experience psychodelic stuff, perhaps this duotine/exctiplat-whatever is kinda like DMT. (Research some of the effects of that, I know people like Joe Rogan talk about it too, it's really interesting & you'll see what I'm hinting at. How true it all is I have no clue but it's interesting).

This story reminds me of American McGee's Alice. It had a similar idea of Alice witnessing her parents death at a young age and being so traumatized that she started to escape to Wonderland, which is a sick twisted fantasy world corrupted by her trauma. The second game even has Alice jumping back and forth between Wonderland and the Real World as her trauma continues to get worse and she has trouble figuring out which is real and which is fake

My first impression was that it was mostly real, except that Remor lied about what happened to Fran's parents. He seems to only care about causing as much misery as possible, and he would've picked up on her survivor's guilt, so it'd make sense for him to show her whatever would be the most painful regardless of whether it's true.
Although... With how this setting works, it's possible that she didn't do it *and* he wasn't lying. That could've been another Fran. DXD
Also I kinda wonder if Remor was really motivated by pure sadism the whole time, or if he was like, playing emotional 5D chess to get Fran (and others) to achieve the same kind of enlightenment that Leon did? I don't think we really hear much about his precise motives, but it's interesting that he doesn't try to prevent Fran from going to Ithersta in the end. Also it looks a lot like he's literally a doctor, with voluntary patients and everything.

I actually seen kamola type entity when i was 5 or 6 years old i seen a house which was most of the time closed most of the time with no one there and i play alone but one day i seen a way when i steps in every thing Turned black when i steps back every thing become normal so the i ran out of there then i woke up for somedays i didn't get any dream byt then i got a dream with the same house but there was a entity out the door and a little boy who informed me to notice the kamola now i think what would happen if i gone in the dark then i never got that house in my dream 😅
