    People tell me to not overthink this but how can I not when no one seems to agree on how to walk walk? Yet the wrong way leads to pain and injury.

    Why are people in this comment section so anti-heel strike? I feel it's the most natural thing for me to walk with my heel making first contact with the ground.
    I mean sure, if you slam your heel onto the ground, then obviously you'll hurt yourself. But a gentle heel strike while walking seems to be natural.

      There’s a lot of misinformation out there. Heel strike is a natural barefoot walking gait. Toe strike is a natural running gait.
      Maybe some people are different. But based on my exhaustive research, this video is spot on.

      Yup, human's are meant to walk with a heel-strike. Done right, it's much more efficient than forefoot walking, which makes unnecessary use of the calves. Running is a different story, obviously.

    I can only recommend Todd Martin MD, he has a lot of good videos on the controversy "How to walk". I think he is mostly inline with this video. If you doubt this video, please check him out. He might change your mind. I was misled by tons of other youtubers advocating different techniques.

    I have just started wearing gobi ii boots walking on pavement to and from work and around the office. I am finding that my heels are a little sore and tender (I didn’t bother with the insole, I wanted to save for colder weather) I find if I land slightly on the outside of my foot I don’t strike the heel as hard, is that correct? Obviously walking with a toe strike is very strange (well it is to me, running ok but not walking) I also found though that walking on the grass verge I naturally moved to a more tie strike like gait as though I was searching for where the uneven ground was before committing to put my foot down. Is this normal?

      focus on engaging the backfoot and just place the forefoot down balanced, then you will not get in trouble. You are stretching out the forefoot too long. So instead of focusing on the foot that goes into the movement, focus more on the hamstring and glutes of the foot that are on the ground already. When I started doing that, I suddenly did not heel-strike anymore but rather hit mid/forefoot first which works great.

    I notice she's walking with her heel touching the ground first. Is it natural and better to walk heel-first? I notice when I'm walking, I'm hitting the ground with my forefoot/mid-foot first, and the heel only lightly touches the ground very quickly then lifts into my next step. Is that ideal?

    • @okei94
      @okei94 5 років тому +25

      hey D0J0P i am not an expert. just someone who is interested in this topic. I think there is a big difference between walking and runnig barefoot. So when you run you should run on your forefoot/mid-foot. But when walking you use the heel slightly to get the first contact with the ground and roll over your foot, so that the weight of your body is not all going on your forefoot. But i would suggest you to read some other sources.

      @@okei94 If you're walking on gravel or any surface where there is chance for small sharp rocks there is no way in hell that you're gonna be able to walk barefoot heel first. If you're walking in sand, then there is no difference between the two. You might be able to walk on sharp objects with a "barefoot shoe" but then the question is, is that natural? Who knows. When i walk barefoot i strike mid or forefoot first because i feel like im activating muscles in a better way, especially my hips. You're going to be running fore-mid foot anyway so walking that way i see as a way to slowly build those muscles.

      Couldn’t disagree with this more. I’m currently over 1,000km into a barefoot walk through 5 countries... not barefoot shoes, proper barefoot. I started walking heel first, as that’s what we are used to but it’s so bad, not only is it more painful and you have less control over your step, it also sends a shock all the way through your body. On the forefoot you can bend your knees and they act like a suspension on a car or bike, it’s got to be so much better for you. I’m no doctor but the experience, mistakes I’ve made and injuries I’ve had tells me heel first is not the best way to walk at all!

      This is the Primus Lite - but the red version is no longer available. We have it in Black... or alternatively you may like the Women's Kanna (In grey, olive, black and white) or the Stealth II (available in black).
      All are great options for casual city use!

      Oh, thank you for the courtesy of your time ! :-) Although, I have to confess that I am a male. Therefore I am looking for Men's shoes. Especially due to the size range, as the colour does not really matter to me. I would wear pink ones if that's what the feet feel like :-D. Thank you for your advice on which shoes to choose. If you can think of any other recommendation, please, plet me know. I would rather not use running shoes on the concrete of the city, although I love barefoot, in the city some little padding for the heel I believe in. I really like the Primus Lite - black version, white version. I will most likely buy them :-). Last but not least I would like to mention that I have bought 6 pairs of shoes from Vivobarefoot so far, always the same store - VIVOBAREFOOT CONCEPT STORE PRAHA and I can not imagine the staff being more magnanimous and kind. Energetic people who really understand the product, can advise, top notch client communication.

    This is a heel strike gate. Not optimal for bare foot walking.

    • @vivobarefootTV
      @vivobarefootTV 4 роки тому +34

      Hello! The difference is subtle and can be read through the feedback in the foot. When in barefoot shoes you will feel the impact and adjust accordingly. The heel lands first but with a soft knee, and then combined with simultaneous transfer of weight and impact over the rest of the foot. The correct walk can still look like a heel strike directly from the side, but the effect is mostly experienced in how it feels rather than how it looks. Hope that helps.

      I finally figured this out after walking on the forefoot for several months and I was just working way too hard and not activating the right muscles. Then I realized that when I was walking completely barefoot that it's nearly impossible not to land on your heels. I think I saw another video where someone was walking heel to toe and I decided to try it. The difference was night and day! Like the video says, as long as you don't straighten your knees and allow your heels to slam down with too much impact then you're absolutely fine walking heel to toe. Like a light rolling motion from back to front. And when you activate your leg muscles from the glutes all the way down, these muscles are your shock absorbers!
