Graham Norton The way he interacts with the guests is just amazing. It feels so natural and not scripted, it seems they're all just having a great time. Whereas watching Ellen makes me cringe so hard.
The characters in most US shows we get in the UK are young, beautiful/handsome, have great jobs, have plenty of time off work to spend on leisure pursuits, etc. Even the homeless characters have perfect Hollywood white teeth. Totally unreal. No wonder some Americans feel under pressure if they compare their lives to these fake characters. The US shows often beat the UK shows on production values (lighting, camera work, etc) but I expect a lot of that is because UK shows have smaller budgets. Nevertheless, I enjoy the escapism and feel good factor of some US shows. At the end of the day, if it's entertaining it's done its job!

My personal favorite British TV shows are Doctor Who, The Prisoner, Red Dwarf, Life on Mars, The Mighty Boosh, The IT Crowd, Toast of London, and The Last Leg.
I have to say that as a Brit, Watch Mojo UK, makes me positively cringe with embarrassment. Whether British TV is better or worse than American TV, or whether the British, do anything better in any capacity, is not our place to say. Residents of any country are often better or worse at something or other. If the British are considered good at something, and are complimented for it by a foreigner, that is very gracious of them, and should be accepted with due humility. To pronounce like some boastful child, "we are better than you are...." is just plain arrogance, and, quite frankly, anything but British! Self praise is no recommendation!
The section where they mentioned relatable characters who are flawed hit a note with me. I remember when I studied film in college, my tutor talked about how American films generally focused more on the American dream, whereas British film focused more on the gritty realism of life, showcasing more of the lower working class than characters who are wealthy executives with pearly white teeth. The UK might be better at nature, factual, panel show TV but as far as drama and comedy goes, the US is so much better than the UK. In the past 25 years the US has put out The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Westworld, Mad Men, The Wire, Game of Thrones, Arrested Development, Severance, Stranger Things... I could go on. The only notable shows from the UK are The Office (which the US arguably did better) and IT Crowd
One thing I prefer about British TV shows is that they don't patronise their audience. US shows (just comparing things like Kitchen Nightmares) always have dramatic zooms and emotional music to tell you how you should be feeling. UK shows trust that audiences know.
I am not from the UK and I used to watch American TV at home, but I always prefer to watch British shows! Their humor is so similar to Filipino comedy 😁
British comedy is definitely the best. I have listed some of my favourites below. Faulty Towers Bottom Red Dwarf Alan Patridge Harry Enfield League Of Gentlemen Mrs Browns Boys Still Game Spaced
British is better more context. My favorite all the comedies I used to like Keeping up appearances. All British tv is good mostly I like all from Ireland.
I'm British. I love most of the panel shows. British chat shows are better. Hate daytime t.v. and soaps. Unfortunately most u.k. comedy shows that i love are from years ago.. Personally I prefer u.s. thrillers, cop shows etc.
Why did u add the end part....? Lol that pointless u can get British TV in every country lol America seems to be the only place that has the least amount of British tv
Bearded_Z0mbie Gaming the end part means; compared to local TV quality around the world. British TV by far stands out. Particularly, the content, the journalism, the series, dramas, documentaries are superior.
i think your answer depends on your nationality, being british of course i say uk, but it should be remembered even though Americans speak a similar language they are foreigners and another culture.
I am British, and obviously knew the fact that this video is presenting, but also, you are bringing up excellent points that I never even thought about. You forgot to mention how much better the game shows are by actually allowing you to play along easier and being a bit more laid back and more like a pub quiz than a massive competition. That in my book is a major advantage to Britain > America.
Just look at ALL the productions from Simon Cowell in the UK. The US🇺🇸 buy the rights but they did not create them. Another example : Chef Gordon Ramsey.
“Britain’s got it down to a tea.” My favourite British shows have got to be: Jam, Red Dwarf, The Weakest Link, Countdown, Bruiser & Nathan Barley. Unbeatable.

It's so noticeable in panel shows like "Would you lie to me" how genuine the British comedians come across compared to elsewhere. The Taskmaster come across as quite cringe inducing in US, Norwegian and Swedish version. The Brits just ooze charisma. Probably part of not needing to fake being perfect.
I watch Sherlock, Doctor Who, and that Show with Androids, I forgot what's it called. The U.K TV looks so different than U.S TV. Mr. Bean is popular in the U.S than the U.K.
I haven't watched American TV in years. I ONLY watch British TV. UA-cam has a lot. I also bought more shows than I can count on DVDs. Who but the British would come up with shows like "Keeping Up Appearances," "Edible Fungi in the Lake District," "One Man & His Dog," "Red Dwarf," "The Tales of Para Handy," "Wolf Hall," & "Last Tango." I love the offbeat variety of programs from the UK.. ;-D
I think my favourite point is the length of series. In the UK, 1-4 or 5 series of brilliance is enough, not 26 episodes over 15 years like in the states. We know when to keep people wanting more forever
@Jake Waterfall: It reminds me of a story that was attributed to the late Princess Margaret. Supposedly, she claimed that when she took her children to art museums, she would let them see only three works per visit. The reason being was that she'd rather have them begging to see more than to become tired of it.
So brave of you to put this on the WatchMojoUK channel, I'd have been more impressed if this was on the WatchMojo channel with 21 mil subscribers where an American audience would actually have a chance of seeing it. As it stands this is just self congratulatory pandering to a UK audience. "Isn't our stuff better."
EXACTLY. as an American this has not persuaded me to watch a single British show. "the things that happen on these shows could be like stuff that could happen to you in real life." WHAT NO WAY. NO SHOW HAS EVER DONE THAT. put this on a popular American yt channel and see how many likes you get
As an American, I can say there's very little I'll watch on TV, a bit of news, and nothing else. I do enjoy British programs that are shown on Facebook, and I have subscribed to a couple of streaming services. Two of my favorites, 8 out of 10 Cats and Taskmaster.
America: any number of godawful superhero TV series, when one gets cancelled, two more appear in its place. UK: Misfits, the only true superhero series made for an adult audience. At least until "The Boys" came along.
One Foot in the Grave, Fawlty Towers, Black Mirror, In the Flesh, The Office, but also other European shows like Black Spot, Dark, Gomorrah, Suburra, Marianne and The Chalet. Great Shows!
Because its too difficult to understand the accents for Americans, the majority of Americans never travel outside of the US and therefore never pick up the skills required to understand other styles of speaking. It's because of how big America is, they don't need to travel to ski or surf or anything else, the US is also isolated by 2 oceans which means that any travel outside North America is very expensive and time consuming. This is all backed up by stats by the way, it's not meant as an insult, just an answer to the question.
As a British TV viewer I feel this list is somewhat skewed forwards the strengths of UK TV output and ignores a lot of what is as good and often superior on American TV, I can't speak so much as regards over the air TV but if you take into account providers such as HBO the whole picture changes quite a lot, what about the walking dead? or the sopranos, or the Wire,
I don’t even think British TV critics think UK tv is better than American TV. American TV produces more of everything, from trash such as The Kardashians to arguably the most important drama ever made, The Wire. Even comedy can be low brow JackAss to the brilliant The Larry David Show. But right now, American TV is in a golden age of relevant drama.
I'm British and I really don't like a lot of UK TV like QI and I would rather gauge my eyes out than watch bargain hunt, talk shows are ok but mostly myself and pretty much everyone I know now watches UA-cam, Netflix, amazon prime video, etc, documentaries are brilliant here but i've never really enjoyed a lot of TV as such. TV like BBC Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who are incredible but, like mentioned before, you can watch them on Netflix, making general TV more or less irrelevant here now other than a few key areas like mock the week or comedy central, and David Attenborough of course, his documentaries do and always will make up for the lack of good British television.
Haven't watched yet (placed in _Watch Later_ queue), but already clicked *_like._* As an American, UK TV is _definitely_ superior IMO. Curious to see if _profit aspect_ is noted. . .particularly with the US news. Ugh.
there's no doubt that America is superior when it comes to quality and quantity in television and film, but there's something about being a bit more modest that Brits get right, whereas if an American show tries to go the modest route, it gets torn apart for looking cheap
I am British and I love comedy in all its forms. I love British comedy but I also love so many American comedy shows. They do it in their own way but are both funny. Both have comedy shows that suck big time.
Unlike American shows which are about 70% reboots and blood money, British telly, to me, looks like there was an actual team of passionate producers in the studio, working hard to make the show in question. It's a shame that there's not a lot of that on American TV, or I'd watch it more.
Showing a clip of Poldark whilst mentioning quality content made me very happy. I can’t believe I’m watching a WatchMojo video without getting annoyed...
Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby are national treasures and Americans will just never understand. And, whilst not the best representation I can’t even think of a Keith Lemon comparison. 😂 Not only that but don’t even get me started on the brilliance of Ant and Dec.
Does anyone else remember when ITV brought the Johny Carson Show across from the US? Big adverts everywhere, saying it's "The show that makes Michael Parkinson look like Michael Parkinson" and to be sure Parkinson was a bit rattled. I remember being excited about America's favourite, legendary talk show coming to town. When it actually happened, I could NOT believe how utterly dull and banal Johny Carson was. His unfunny stand up routine must have lasted 15 minutes and felt like more. The guests were bigger names in Hollywood than Parkinson's but they were often overawed by Carson himself and the whole thing just fell flat. I don't think it lasted more than a few months in the UK. And now we have Graham Norton.
I love that UK TV doesn't censor content like the US. It also has some of the best sitcoms. My only problem is that only a small number of episodes are produced. I love how in the US a sitcom today gets at least 13 episodes a year. BUT I love how UK sitcoms come back for Christmas and News Years Eve specials after they end regular production.
@James Doyle That's because it's premium TV. Free TV and basic cable are heavily censored. It's so bad BBC America can't show "Mrs. Brown's Boys" or "The Inbetweeners" without heavy editing.
No, Fawlty Towers ended because John Cleese felt they had done all they could with the situation in those 12 episodes. He said in a 1979 interview that it would be the "law of diminishing returns", the more episodes they would have done, the worse it would have got, so he stopped at 12 episodes. Remember John quit Monty Python after three series because he felt they were repeating themselves in series three.
One thing that puzzles me is why The Guardian is often so snide about their local TV and seem to revere American TV. They really don’t appreciate what’s on their doorstep. I’m Australian and our TV sucks big time.

One thing I prefer about British TV shows is that they don't patronise their audience. US shows (just comparing things like Kitchen Nightmares) always have dramatic zooms and emotional music to tell you how you should be feeling. UK shows trust that audiences know.
“Brits just do it better”
We know
I am not from the UK and I used to watch American TV at home, but I always prefer to watch British shows! Their humor is so similar to Filipino comedy 😁
I just cannot watch comedies where you hearing the audience laughing after every joke. It's like they are too stupid to know the punchline!
I suggest arrested development. One of the few good American shows
I agree except for Little Britain!
shush!!!!!!!!! your not meant to state the obvious
Except for Seinfeld
British comedy is definitely the best. I have listed some of my favourites below.

Bottom

Father ted ( it’s Irish actually 🇮🇪)
I'm a Aussie & BRITISH tv shows are heaps better than American tv shows.
Yelp and don't ever change your opinion.
British is better more context. My favorite all the comedies I used to like Keeping up appearances. All British tv is good mostly I like all from Ireland.
Father Ted.
I'm British. I love most of the panel shows. British chat shows are better. Hate daytime t.v. and soaps. Unfortunately most u.k. comedy shows that i love are from years ago.. Personally I prefer u.s. thrillers, cop shows etc.
I love the irony that when he started discussing the overwhelming amount of advertising in America...the video was interrupted by an ad.
You only briefly mentioned sitcoms - the UK has made many of the best sitcoms, so you should have given more time to them in this video.
I literally did a talk comparing German, British and American soap operas and guess which one won at being good, realistic and influential? 😉
Definitely not german lol
I love UK tv, and I really miss it when I’m travelling abroad. And I’ve been to many countries..
@@bearded_z0mbiegaming108 they do not understand all the different British accents.
i think your answer depends on your nationality, being british of course i say uk, but it should be remembered even though Americans speak a similar language they are foreigners and another culture.
Because we have Matt Berry, Noel Fielding, Richard Ayoade etc.
sorry. Freddie... Noal Fielding is not one bit funny.
tyndall1006 YES HE IS
@@rlinders9972 Nope
Just look at ALL the productions from Simon Cowell in the UK.
The US🇺🇸 buy the rights but they did not create them.
Another example : Chef Gordon Ramsey.
My son found the "Kitchen gun" Skit and I've never heard him laugh so hard...
We have Holly Willoughby
“Britain’s got it down to a tea.”
My favourite British shows have got to be: Jam, Red Dwarf, The Weakest Link, Countdown, Bruiser & Nathan Barley.
Unbeatable.
It's "down to a t" not "tea"
I know. It just sounded like a play-on-words, so I thought I’d point it out.
8 out of 10 cats does countdown
I already do. Along with the normal Countdown. I do like it.
The one thing I can’t stand is the advert , I watched an episode of family guy in America , it had 3 to 4 commercial breaks for a 30 minute show!
Yes alot of commercials are player between shows.
Same for BigBangTheory in Germany. One episode is about 20min long. Why do you have to put 30min of commercials in?
Back in the 70's, here in the UK, the ads were as good as the shows. .
Carol Snook - So true. Any faves?
@@AtheistOrphan yes. The Cadbury Smash ones, and one of the Hamlet Cigar ones starring Rab C Nesbitt (Gregor Fisher) in a photo booth. .that one cost a pound to make...probably the cheapest ad ever...for me as a child, and now nearing my 60s , these still remain two of my favs....
British everything is better and am Canadian. Can’t get enough of British television. They just have a sensibility.
By heaping praise on soaps, antique shows, property shows etc., you've discredited your point. There are far too many of those awful shows.
I think the quality of the actors, overall, is another factor.
One of my favourite British jokes is on Mock the Week someone said "Hi, I'm Dave and I repeat the same thing over and over" then used it again
British quiz shows are also better than American quiz shows and Graham Norton Show is better than any US talk shows.
U can say that again.the Americans are really bored they should get out of genres of entertainment, they lack the substance of the british people.
@Jake Waterfall: It reminds me of a story that was attributed to the late Princess Margaret. Supposedly, she claimed that when she took her children to art museums, she would let them see only three works per visit. The reason being was that she'd rather have them begging to see more than to become tired of it.
totally agree - any British panel or game show is better than anything from the usa
British humour is different alot of people dont get it sometimes it can be very subtle. But i love a good british comedy and typical british films.
In the US you look at their comedy shows for news content and their news shows for comedy.
There not that dam funny.
"the things that happen on these shows could be like stuff that could happen to you in real life."
WHAT NO WAY. NO SHOW HAS EVER DONE THAT. put this on a popular American yt channel and see how many likes you get
You're right about American advertisements. I'm sick of the shows on ABC promoting Disney pictures.
UK TV = Funny
US TV = Money
*90% produced by the BBC with NO ADVERTS*
remember thats because of the license fee.
The BBC is shit and you gotta pay for it. State run programming lol
Grab the popcorn. This comment section is gonna be wild!
British TV any time!
Best example: itv's Broadchurch and the American remake Gracepoint... Why couldn't they just watch the British version?
Potter Pinguin they do that with all the brilliant Scandinavian dramas too! The killing USA was so shite! 🙄
As a British TV viewer I feel this list is somewhat skewed forwards the strengths of UK TV output and ignores a lot of what is as good and often superior on American TV, I can't speak so much as regards over the air TV but if you take into account providers such as HBO the whole picture changes quite a lot, what about the walking dead? or the sopranos, or the Wire,
Says British Shows are better
Only says that because he’s British
I’m undecided 🤷♂️
as neither a Brit or a Yank I can unbiased say British TV is the dogs bollocks... and most US TV is something that even the cat wouldn't drag in.
Haven't watched yet (placed in _Watch Later_ queue), but already clicked *_like._* As an American, UK TV is _definitely_ superior IMO. Curious to see if _profit aspect_ is noted. . .particularly with the US news. Ugh.
"You're not my muvver!!!"
"Yes I am"
Lol classic enders!!
Get outta ma pub!
The best thing We have in uk is George Clarke who is a very attractive architect from Sunderland. He is called Restoration Man.
I do enjoy British programs and so really good actors and actresses
there's no doubt that America is superior when it comes to quality and quantity in television and film, but there's something about being a bit more modest that Brits get right, whereas if an American show tries to go the modest route, it gets torn apart for looking cheap
I hope we never go cheap, it just looks gross
British tv shows I know: geordie shore, just tattoo of us, teen mom etcetera
They are all American shows, and MTV made UK verisons. That's not British TV
Guess they have never heard about family guy and American dad.
Not only that but don’t even get me started on the brilliance of Ant and Dec.
But British TV has love Island that makes it worse.
American TV also has love island. Which is (despite the odds) even worse than the UK version
Well the ratings clearly tell a different story.
The Aussie version of Love Island is worse
I love that UK TV doesn't censor content like the US. It also has some of the best sitcoms. My only problem is that only a small number of episodes are produced. I love how in the US a sitcom today gets at least 13 episodes a year. BUT I love how UK sitcoms come back for Christmas and News Years Eve specials after they end regular production.
@James Doyle That's because it's premium TV. Free TV and basic cable are heavily censored. It's so bad BBC America can't show "Mrs. Brown's Boys" or "The Inbetweeners" without heavy editing.
Also the UK versions of : The Office, IT Crowd, Got Talent, SKINS, and Bitten are so much better ((come at me))
Americans are watered down white people.there personality lacks much.i love the realness of the Brits they bring ambience.
The (UK) Office should have continued. Fawlty Towers ended too soon because Connie Booth refused to do any more eps.
I am southamerican, live in Uruguay. This is a corner of the world absolutely influenced by USA tv and in every issue they think we are their " backyard". I ABSOLUTELY LOVE british tv and actors!!!!!! Just an example : the most great tv show nowadays GOT has an outstanding cast of all brits actors, except one , Peter Dinklage ,who casually win 3 Emmys😣!!! The brits are far better actors , scripts are more grounded ,shows are more fresh 👍👍. This month I've been watching Euphoria, well promoted as the drama of teenagers reality , I think that SKINS is more accurate in showing the teen world ,and was done before and here in the "backyard" nobody knows its existence!!!! Lucky is Netflix now😁😁. So : british tv works for me because its clever, make people think, their characters are more real ,britsh accents are gorgeous and you rock guys!!😘😘😘😘😘
Ana Dati from the US here and agree. Brits are just all-around better.
Note: GOT was written by a United Statesmen from New Jersey, which confuses the heck outta me 😅
@@TuathaTuna Oh,Rachel, I know that George is north american, I'm a huge fan of his work, but here we are speaking about tv. I'm an admirer of great writers like W.Whitman, Edgar Allan Poe, H.P Lovecraft, E. Hemingway, Ray Bradbury, and other awesome authors!!! Just talking of tv, I think brits are more effective than north americans, that's all! 😁😘😘
Agreed 😊. I just adore those isles, and most everyone and everything that comes out of them
The only plus side to Stateside TV is only certain cartoons that are enjoyable. Also, we get fewer ad breaks as well.
Year of the rabbit is hilarious!!! 😂 can’t wait for s2. How anyone can watch Ellen, is beyond me.
And The Americans used to get it so right:- Sgt Bilko, Beverley Hill Billies, The Munsters, all those great Cop shows from the 70's, Rowen and Martin, Dallas, Get Smart, The Outer Limits. It's too formulated these days. Mind you, there are still some gems out there...Parks and Rec for example and The Sopranos (although they are both old series)
