I had no idea hat pins were/are illegal! When my Mom was a kid, there was a bully on her school bus. She got tired of being one of the victims, so she took one of Grandma's hat pins, arranged to sit behind the bully & really gave it to him thru the gap between the seat & the seat back. He let out a screech & wouldn't tell why (didnt want to admit his transgressions...😅) & never bothered her again.
That is a memory you both will cherish and revisit in the tales of the "Rest" room Divan as you grow older and fill your new home with treasures, happiness and love...and PLEASE leave in the Abraham Lincolns' bum was here and possibly tied his shoes whenever you tell the story. What an adventure!!
I have my great grandmothers hat pins; I have 8 of them and a beautiful ceramic receptacle that has holes in the top to stand the pins in. I had no idea that hat pins were a forbidden weapon at one time. I am not sure of the age of the pins or the ceramic piece that holds the pins but if my math is correct, my great grandmother would be 130-135 years old today so I would think the pins are at least 100 years old. I treasure them and am so thankful to my aunt who gifted them to me.
Ron the reason a hatpin might be 12" inches long would be how large your hair was pouffed up and the size of the hat. The pin would have to be long enough to extend through both the hair and the hat in two places. It was 1900-1920 that women wore what they called a Gibson Girl style, which was a very large pompadour.
I went to the Hermatige as a kid! My Dad lived in Asheville when I was a kid and I used to love spending summers there. If you go back take time to see the Biltmore Estate. It's fantastic and worth seeing at least once I promise! lol That sofa is a true gem and special find. I'm glad you guys won the bid! Those mushroom rolls look like they slap and I'm totally going to make those. Yummy!
you guys are amazing, love the energy, passion and dedication. I loved it when you mentioned that the 3 legged pot in which the mushroom filling was cooked is as old as the recipe, I was in awe, Its nice to see someone appreciate these old cookware that are so well and beautifully made. the old stuff is so so so good! keep it going guys, its inspiring and a look into the past and keeping our history alive.
Guys, i'm so very touched, that you remember about us in your prayer, thank you ❤, this is the best what I could hear today 😌. Best wishes from Poland (Europe)
Interesting Hat Pin story! I never knew they were that big ☺️ I've always loved hat pins 😍 My Grandmother and her sisters had them. She was born in 1911 🥰
Oddly, Sevierville was named after the founder of Tennessee and the first govenor. He was also a general in the Revolution. I know this because he was my great great great great grandfather. Dolly Parton is from there hence Dolly Parton Blvd. Just a bit of history...
You are so funny, you were where Dolly Parton was born, it is a tourist town with pigeon forge, you can go through town and find Dollywood, Huge place with a lot of shopping, it is pronounced Sa-Veer-Ville.
That sofa is spectacular! It is so hard to find beautiful old original pieces in decent shape for an honest price anymore. I applaud your journey to acquire such a piece and I hope it brings you lots of joy! Please share how it looks in your new home once things are more settled and in place 😉
Greetings from Montana 😊❤👋 Your new sofa is absolutely beautiful! I love the carved eagle feet on it! It is absolutely perfect for your new home, and how amazing it is, that you actually won an auction! That’s a story in itself! Your trip sounded like a lot of fun until the snow storm, and I have to say Ron did an amazing job making that sofa coffin! 🤣 the meal looked wonderful, The chat was a lot of fun, and leave it to America to have a hat pin craze! I am really loving your weird facts in history! Have a blessed weekend and see you next time!❤🇺🇸❤🇺🇸❤🇺🇸🙏
Y’all were in Pigeon Forge! It’s so fun and it’s definitely a tourist town! Cades Cove in Great Smoky Mtns National Park is a great place to visit; lots of early American history. :)
I made the mushroom bread bowl and just finished eating the whole thing, I could not stop. It was that good! Now, I feel like Ron, so stuffed, but happy lol. I loved hearing about your adventures. You described it with such enthusiasm that I felt like I was experiencing it. Keep adventuring and sharing! The love and connection between you two is very unique. It's a pleasure being a part of your joyful life as a viewer!🥰
That sofa is gorgeous and I would put it in s modern house too. Your cooking, the way you do it, is a real art Justine and so relaxing and beautiful to watch ❤
lol, I live in Sevierville. You practically drove right past my house. Yes, we are strange but wonderful. It seems like everyone in the world is moving here. Not exactly a fan of that, however we do have a lot to offer. Your sofa is gorgeous, congratulations.
I'm so happy you guys got home safely. Driving through the mountains are scary enough in good weather, let alone a crazy snowstorm! But the adventures you have are so fun to listen to. And I'm going to make those mushroom rolls for sure..25 out of 10.
When I was a child my grandma had her pins. I thought then that when you get older the hat pin doesn't hurt when you stick it in your head!! Ingenious to construct a box to transport your beautiful sofa!!
Lmao I’m from Manitoba, Canada it gets up to -45 degrees Celsius here! I know snow well and can understand the need to pull over. I’m glad you guys didn’t try to drive and were smart enough to wait it out. :)
I have been to Ashville and loved it as well. Tennessee defiantly has alot to do. Spent many summers there with family. ❤ Another great one as usual. ❤
I actually have several hat pins. I believe are from Victorian era. I'm a member of the Salvation Army and when we changed from our beautiful beloved bonnets to the present bowler style my old friend who was in her 80's gave me a set of jet hat pins which I have consistently used when the weather is blowy. These are only about 4 inches long though.
Great find on the sofa! Sevierville goes into Pigeon Forge which is the tourist area. Next time check out Dollywood and Gatlinburg too. The gas station was probably Bucee’s in Sevierville. There’s another Bucee’s in Crossville. Yeah, we had an unusual winter storm that gave us 10 inches of snow and shut everything down for about a week. Love your channel and all of the history.
The last time I had to rent a car was a bloody nightmare!!! It was an insurance-supplied rental and I actually had to get my insurance company to send a rep to the rental place to sign some 'release' form. BTW: I live ~ 30 minutes east of Ashville off I-40.
Ok... Sevierville is the home of Dolly Parton and the town and neighboring towns, Pegion Forge and Gatlinburg are HUGE tourist traps in the mountains and that is why it appeared WEIRD to you, LOL. I have spent SO MUCH time all in those hills and LOVE IT all throughout those mountains, it feels like the home for my soul, I SO WISH I could live there. I live in SOUTH Carolina though and we often travel up there, we actually used to have a vacation home in Maggie Valley, which is about a 30 minute drive to Asheville. So glad you all came to our side of the world. :D
Sevierville is famous because Dolly Parton, the singer/songwriter is from there. It is a tourist attraction city along side of Pigeon Forge. “Dollywood”theme park is there too. It’s funny that you’ve never heard of it! It’s pronounced severe-ville. 😂 I am from NC and had never heard of St. Gen until I found your wonderful channels! Thanks for sharing with us. You’re both great.
new to this channel, although I watch Justine cook....are you going to film the building of your new house? I would love to see you make your home made windows....hope you film the building of the house...love those types of videos.
Hey! When I was a VERY young adult (21, I'm in my mid 70's now) in LA, CA I went to a theater where they still had the old fashioned "restroom." It actually had very nice couches and chairs in a lounge area before you get to the actual bathroom. That was the style waaaaaaay back when for the very rich. I'm sure it dated to the early 20th and/or late 19th. I'm sure it's gone now, but it was kind of interesting. I'm sure your (bathroom) sofa was in a room very similar - a lounge in the "restroom." I know it's very odd to you b/c bathrooms are just the bare necessities now.
Haha Pigeon Forge/Sevierville, TN is where my husband and I went for our honeymoon. It’s one of ours and my in-laws’ favorite places. They have a cabin they rent out up there.
I love the Sieverville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area. Dollywood and the aquarium are amazing. Next time you get to the Asheville NC area, check out Biltmore Estate.
Sevierville, Piegon Forge and Gatlinburg, TN is a tourist attraction. I live not too far away. Dollywood in Pigeon Forge used to be Silver Dollar City.
What a great chew for chat, dinner looked amazing and so happy you got the sofa you wanted, bet the best part was the story be hind it LOL! .😂 and I had never heard the story before about the length that they made hat pens. Very strange story. Glad you had a good trip, crazy trip and back home safely.
I love watching Justine make the meals you eat. I’ve learned so much from watching. Thank you Justine for all your hard work, I really appreciate all you do to put these meals together. God bless you both.
Beautiful sofa. All I can say is keep Mish Mish away from it. 😂 I had two beautiful chairs from the 60"s. First thing my pets did was claw it, wipe their muddy feet on it, get milkbone crumbs in the crevices and fart all over it. I still sit on it, but they're completely ruined.
The trip to retrieve the historical sofa sounds like it was filled with what will turn out to be some great memories! Can't wait to see the finished house and furniture!
North Carolina is well known for it's furniture manufacturers. High Point/Greensboro, N.C. are known as the Furniture Capital of the World. Twice a year they have the Furniture Market where hundreds of manufacturers display their furniture and thousand's of buyers come to see all the latest styles. You can find some shops locally that import English sideboards and other antiques. My family is from this area. Happy that you found such a great item for your new home. 💖
Hate hate hate Enterprise rental, so not surprised how they treated you. They tried to claim I damaged the roof of my rental and tried to get me to pay over $ 300. Never paid it and will NEVER use Enterprise ever again. Oh, and thanks for the props on North Carolina! Native Tarheel all my life. Love my state!!

Y'all had me at BREAD BOWL! ✨ Can't wait to catch this later today and hear about your adventures in North Carolina! Cheers, everybody! 😃
You were in pigeon forge in the smokies mountains in one of the biggest tourist places in the USA and world , y’all really must not get out much, lol
I can’t believe yall were just so close to me, I’m in Knoxville, we go to sevierville often

I think that’s the highest I’ve ever heard Ron rate a dish!
I remember my mom wearing hats, small hats and she had 6” hat pins on her dresser! I was born in 1949 and in the 50s they were still popular!
What an exciting trip. Beautiful sofa! It will be so pretty in your new home. The cast iron was a great find. Congrats. Glad you got back safe.
W.O.W. Justine, That sofa took my breathe away! Absolutely beautiful! Congratulations on one of your home furnishing conquests!

Loved this story of your adventure to retrieve your beautiful sofa! You two are the best! Ron going Karen was the best visual 😂
I have to say, I think I laughed more at this chew & chat, than any other! Lol! What an adventure from beginning to end! 😊
I'm so happy you guys got home safely. Driving through the mountains are scary enough in good weather, let alone a crazy snowstorm! But the adventures you have are so fun to listen to. And I'm going to make those mushroom rolls for sure..25 out of 10.
Having the provenance of the sofa really increases the value.
Dolly Parton was born in Sevierville…she has the Dollywood amusement park in the next town…Pigeon Forge
So glad that you're home safely! I'm looking forward to attending your wedding in May! Dreaming of Spring! ❤
Getting the provenance for an antique of that history makes it all the more special. A treasure for you both to conserve for the future.
We were just in Asheville and loved it. We also visited the Biltmore as that is in Asheville also. It was amazing.
This is one of the best Chew & Chats! So interesting!
What wonderful memories you made on this adventure! You can tell your children when you tell them why they cannot sit on the sofa.
When I was a child my grandma had her pins. I thought then that when you get older the hat pin doesn't hurt when you stick it in your head!!
Ingenious to construct a box to transport your beautiful sofa!!

Sevierville is so quirky! pronounced Severe-ville :) Sevier County is where Dolly Parton is from!
Wow! such an adventure! you need to write it all up to keep it with the sofa (along with pictures of you shipping crate!) LOL!
Love this couple perfect for each other! Love your shows. You're both exceptional couple Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏
I’m so grateful for having you both back 💕💕
The pots are great finds as well as the couch.
You guys always bring a smile to my face!
We're glad that we can make you smile 😁
You guys are great storytellers! Congrats on acquiring the bathroom couch! 😂
The sofa is so cool ! Those eagle feet are amazing!
Foraging for some morels, chanterelles, and lionhead mushrooms makes a poor man's fancy meal.
You guys are an absolute blast. What an exciting adventure. Great story-telling too.

*Gasp* you stayed in Dolly Partons hometown!! Sevierville. And that gas station looks like Buccees! We have many here in Texas.
It is a Buc-Cee's. I live a few miles from there.
The sofa looks Very nice for being so old. You're a dentist sounds like fun. Thank goodness you decided to build a box.
Omg the sofa!!!! INCREDIBLE! Wow! What a piece of history to have! The eagles!!🦅 Merica 😂 love it! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
My husband and I said the mushroom loaves would be the bomb!
I remember when ladies bathrooms had what was called a fainting couch in their entry rooms, 😂. So maybe it’s a fainting couch.
