I finally found someone who is normal, organized, pragmatic and interesting/organized! Thank you for all you do and share and teach! I really appreciate it and you are making a big difference for many people...
I needed to hear this tonight, building a new 160G (display/200 total) reef and secured some corals but I can feel when my tank wants me to keep my hands out, and tonight is definitely one of those times. It's probably hardest for us beginners, but need to take more notes from the experts! Thank You!
Good points Hex. I got squirted in the eye by a mushroom. It burned like a mofo for several hours. Got hit by a Lionfish years ago when I was Fish only. It hurt really bad. Thanks for sharing this info.
You're so right about no sudden changes to parameters. Patience is key, I think I lost a Fijian green acro. to a sudden rise in alkalinity. Now I perform what you do, slight change to dosing pump and wait a week or so and test. If changes are need they're small
Congrats on the 4K - this video did the trick! There's always at least one thing I learn from this type of video, and in this one it was reinforcement of my reluctance to use anything HOB, so thanks for that. I can second the advice on handling palys and Zoas - I got sick last June from ingesting dust while wire brushing dead dry palys off a rock. I was sick for several days. Should have worn a mask...
So basically, if you are going to purchase a saltwater tank, you have to go out and buy 2 or 3 more tanks, lights, pumps, filters, just to run the one tank you wanted because you have to have a quarantine tank, a dip tank, a rock curing tank etc. etc. etc. Oh, don't forget the sump and refugium either, that way we can get you to have to buy 5 or 6 tanks so that you can enjoy your main display tank in a few months with the little free time you have where you are not performing maintenance on the 5 or 6 tanks you have to get to have the main display tank. That does not include your water processing tubs etc. etc. etc. No wonder so may people say "screw this hobby" after getting into it. They wanted a simple Nano saltwater reef tank, and never realized they would be buying $5000 dollars worth of gear just to run a 20 gallon nano tank....according to all of the experts....
Beautiful tank. Don't know how true your comment is on not using hang on back overflows. I have two separate ones on my tank. Never had an issue in 20 years. 175,200 hours of use on two overflows without ever losing syphon. I'd say that's some pretty good stats.
I base my information on facts and from what i have seen go wrong within the hobby. Consider yourself lucky to have gone that long without an issue but for the majority of people who use those types of overflows find it fails and they cause more problems and should of spent the extra time drilling the tank. At the end of the day people are free to do what they want its just information.
Nice video and awesome tank. Good point on not dosing 2 part in the same location at the same time, that reaction will definitely form a precipitate. Reminds me of college chemistry lol.
Nice tips, but I would warn about using the Apex to turn ON/OFF the heater. From my own personal experience the Apex EB8 module can fail due to wear and tear and leave the outlet in the ON position which would then cause chaos. Another option would be to set the heater to whatever temperature you want and set the Apex as a fail safe at a higher temperature, this way you won't wear and tear the EB8 bar as much since it will only be switching on/off when the heater fails, and then you know its time to replace them. You can also use the outlets that have physical relays (I forgot which ones are those) so that they truly turn off when they have to.
I think your apex failure was a firmware issue. I have never had an issue in over two years and never heard of this problem. Ill do some research and see what i can find but i would think with no moving parts it would be a software problem.
Excellent video indeed I've definitely learnt a few things here today ..... I need to keep my hands out the tank for sure .... and sort my feeding out and my lights hahaha thanks for the great help and advice you continually offer 🤗🤗🤗
The hands thing is a problem for all of us at one point. Im just bringing it to light in hopes people figure it out before its to late. Thanks for watching.
Great video bro, you got some good points.. Say... What color is the background? It looks shimmering, like a night sky full of stars, or I imagine, and it's a normal black color lol
Any recommendations for an aquarium controller? I only need the basics now, but more advanced functionality would be awesome later. RKL or AJR? Love the videos everytime
I plan to get an eel , but would it eat my fire shrimps. Some suggest it would but I see them together in other tanks so I'm in the fence on this decision
My snowflake eel wont eat cleaner shrimp but he has eaten several peppermint. As for fire shrimp i feel they might be in the same boat as the peppermints but every eel has its own personality and you wont know until you try. Please check out this video before you put the eel in ua-cam.com/video/A76GRGoDhns/v-deo.html
I Wonder if nowadays the hand sanitizer is a cause of irritation for some reefs. I dont really use it but wonder if people who use it alot have problems
Sorry, but I'm just learning about reef tanks - so please be patient with my elementary / ignorance, but one question: I see your large blue fish on the left continuing to go to the surface...kind of reminds me of an animal at the zoo pacing along the fence...what do you think it is doing? Going for air? Normal behavior? Looking for food? Thanks very much!
What is your opinion on bare bottom tanks? This video looks like you run a bare bottom tank and that's what I run as well. I just feel like it it makes less of a chore when doing maintenance other than the obvious. But what is your opinion?
Everything was going great until you said stay away from HOB Overflows lol. Current setup is a 90 side by side a 30 for a display refugium and the 30 will have an ESHOPPS HOB Overflow. 90 is cycling right now with a RS-200 Adv and going good. Had the 30 cycling independent since I don't have any macro to stock it with or the tools to drill it. Basically I was impatient and wanted the main up and going with the display refugium added later. Display refugium is not a must have, but I like the idea of a large display for it instead of hidden below.
i have the same montipora as you blue and orange and my blue purble turn to brown also my stylophora pink and purble start to bleach out do you know if temp play some role?
Temp could cause RTN but what it sounds like to me is you have a nutrient issue. Browning is common with higher nitrates and phosphates. Have you tested those and have you had anything happen to the system or have you changed anything?
FishOfHex i made 200l water change yesterday i change also my phosphate ex media in my reactor i also clean my deep sand but when i check my nitrate was lil bit high phos was ok
If you mixed up your deep sand bed that is the problem. You released that bacteria and nutrients into the water. You never want to clean a deep sand bed. As for cleaning it what did you do?
i made the 200l water change with hoover of the sand bed i take also most of my live rock out to a bucket i clean it with tooth brush i set them all back then i start to add the new water
Great informative video, looking forward to viewing more of what you have to offer. Thanks. I'm so ready to get back into the hobby. It's been 20 yrs since I've had a tank. I also had bare bottom back in the day. Frank L's reef tank here on youtube if interested in viewing. It's vhs converted to digital signal, alittle rough, but you can see what I had. Also a new camera learning how to use it.
Great tips, although one thing I noticed : u overtitrate your ca test. You are Getting a false result that way. Unless I didn't see it Well, because video was sped up..
If you want to continue to use hang on the back equipment that would be on you. I personally would get a new tank, for the amount of money invested to have an overflow box fail and lose everything its not worth it.
FishOfHex i'm 14, buying new tanks for a couple hundred dollars is something i can do VERY rarely. i'd rather take my chance with HOB equipment, i've never had one fail in my couple years of using them and don't feel it'll happen any time soon. i'd LOVE a drilled tank but i can't work where i live so the money for it doesnt really come in to me :(
i disagree with you on not using a hang on the back overflow.... granted they are less than ideal and i don't recommend using them, you greatly overstated the risk by talking about a very specific use case of pairing them with an ATO.
Check your nitrates and phosphate let me know what you get. if you have algae in the tank you have a good change of getting a false reading. Let me know
You have a phosphate issue for sure I would increase your water changes and add replace your gfo. If that doesnt get rid of the cyanobacteria you can buy a reef safe product that will kill it but you still need to get your nutrient levels down.
you always talk abouty QT , so i did QT the same way u did but idk maybe i have shitty luck i have ich again , i tried but i failed now i have no faith on qt, cuz ich is there doesnt matter how much i tried :(
I finally found someone who is normal, organized, pragmatic and interesting/organized! Thank you for all you do and share and teach! I really appreciate it and you are making a big difference for many people...

Thank You, I was trying to bring some of the things people just dont think about into the light in hopes it can save a life haha
thank you thank you for mentioning palytoxin. my whole house got hospitalized because of exposure when we moved the tank to a new house.
You're so right about no sudden changes to parameters. Patience is key, I think I lost a Fijian green acro. to a sudden rise in alkalinity. Now I perform what you do, slight change to dosing pump and wait a week or so and test. If changes are need they're small
Good stuff man good stuff first time watching you I just found you this evening.

+Reefgrrl Thank you and yea the video got me a couple hundred so not bad. I'll have plenty more videos like this in the future.
just wanted to say hi from Dublin, Ireland. thanks for all your hard work, u make learning enjoyable

Heater tip saved my ass. I bought 3 just in case. Day 3 one went out. Hahaha so glad I had a spare. Didnt skip a beat.
Beautiful tank.

Had to say it

thanks dude. . loads of info there. . I have my first salt tank but I'm not doing anything with it until iv gathered enough info
Thanks very nice info

Dang just watched this gem. Great video man.
Great video thanks for the information
Great video Travis and as Billy noted the Suck it up buttercup got me laughing...Great job.
Thank You
Dude I'm a fan Awesome video Thanks for the information
Good video Travis...enjoyed it.
Thank You
All great advice as always. My only question is: What is that gorgeous green monti with the purple rim at the end? I need a frag of that!
+ReefSpy Just a green monti cap that I know of and in Jun I'll be happy to sell you a frag
FishOfHex cool. Next frag swap I'm coming for a piece of that!
+ReefSpy January 28th is the next one at that fish place I'll bring some with me
ReefSpy yeah man that Monti is awesome. Hex do you sell? may I buy a frag of it?
Ill be selling some on jan 28th frag swap in lancaster pa. The rest will be fragged in june when i break the tank down.
amazing info and insight
Thank You
Great video bro, you got some good points.. Say... What color is the background? It looks shimmering, like a night sky full of stars, or I imagine, and it's a normal black color lol
Don't buy cheap heaters, lost 1200 worth of coral overnight when i started. One of the best tips a beginner can get!
Any recommendations for an aquarium controller? I only need the basics now, but more advanced functionality would be awesome later. RKL or AJR? Love the videos everytime
+Tom Maragos Neptune Apex all the way. I wouldn't use anything else
Great video
Does your snowflake eel ever go for the clownfish?
I plan to get an eel , but would it eat my fire shrimps. Some suggest it would but I see them together in other tanks so I'm in the fence on this decision

7.15 the fish in the middle bottom of the tank swims to the far left bottom and eats one of your crawly things 😂
Another good video.

Awesome vid
How big of a quarantine tank do u recommend?
depends on the size of the fish and how many. I find 20 gallon longs to be a good match for most
What is the best test kit?
red sea for cal,mag and i use hana for alk
Oh cool is that a blue star fish in the corner front and side I would love a star fish
Yea linka starfish had him for a long time now. You can find the video in the 125 gallon playlist of getting him

ua-cam.com/video/F6hZ1t6Ytoo/v-deo.html
Ended up in ER after moving some paly, no not directly either, sealed room, ended up with breathing issues, restricted throat. Scary shit.
So you spread out your dosing throughout a 24 hour period, every hour?
+Dos Maiz (Twocorns) yes check this video out
Which video?

I will say whatever you did to the sand bed is whats causing the nutrient issue.
My fish shop use copper in their system. they said no need to qtin the fish. Good or bad?
How many gallons is your tank?
This one? 125 Gallon
nice video bro
Do u have to quarantine if it’s only 1 fish
All it takes is one to cause a problem so yes i would.
if my tank is newly established and ran thru its cycle, do i still qt the fish before putting it in the tank?
Yes you still need to qt the fish.
thankyou!

+Frank L cool man well welcome back I'll check your stuff out. Any questions hit me up
What is wrong with your blue tang, why does it keep grabbing air from the surface and going back to hiding
Nothing is wrong
What stick do you use to feed your eel in this video??
shish kabob sticks
👍🏻👍🏻🐟👊🏼
Use gloves 🤗🐠🐟 Love your videos!
Can you describe you QT tank.

Greetz from Holland.
Thank You
Can you more closes movies making from youre beautifulll coral?
Will do
Youre tank is so nice.
Great tips, although one thing I noticed : u overtitrate your ca test.
You are Getting a false result that way.
Unless I didn't see it Well, because video was sped up..
+Bruno_p it was done correctly
Would it get to big
Yes
First time I checked out your video and I really like good advice, thanks. Do you consult with people via email?
"dont over feed your fish" yeah this is basicly what i learned from my dog :D it's literaly 1 on 1 the same eating happit: take what u get.
What do you feed your corals?
brs reef chilli once a month
what if you have no options about hob overflows? my tank is tempered glass and can't be drilled so i have no option
If you want to continue to use hang on the back equipment that would be on you. I personally would get a new tank, for the amount of money invested to have an overflow box fail and lose everything its not worth it.

Warped I’ve used hob and canisters they worked great but I will be building a sump soon
warped the have hob overflow boxs now that you can run to a sump
i disagree with you on not using a hang on the back overflow.... granted they are less than ideal and i don't recommend using them, you greatly overstated the risk by talking about a very specific use case of pairing them with an ATO.
my cal mag and kh is in normal range
Check your nitrates and phosphate let me know what you get. if you have algae in the tank you have a good change of getting a false reading. Let me know
FishOfHex and the problem that i deal now for 3 weaks i got red slim algae explode in my tank
You have a phosphate issue for sure I would increase your water changes and add replace your gfo. If that doesnt get rid of the cyanobacteria you can buy a reef safe product that will kill it but you still need to get your nutrient levels down.
Dawn is not soap it's a detergent witch is chemicals and is very hard to rinse completely clean of all residue
Thank you! Now i can live the rest of my days knowing you provided me with this vital life altering information! God speed my friend
you always talk abouty QT , so i did QT the same way u did but idk maybe i have shitty luck i have ich again , i tried but i failed now i have no faith on qt, cuz ich is there doesnt matter how much i tried :(
"that being said"
Yea i cant help it
btw the lionfish dont kill you
Yes they can if you have an allergic reaction to the poison you can die
700th like👍🏼
Lionfish can't kill u
Dr. Mariscal please elaborate
@@FishOfHex lion fish venom is not deadly to humans but will cause pain and swelling.🧠
I'm 14 not in the hobby YET because it kindu expensive
An allergic reaction from the venom would kill you. Just like eating peanut butter
@@FishOfHex k fine
K thanks
I can barely hear you in this video
