L'Anglais William Walton fut l'un des plus éblouissants maîtres de l'orchestration vigoureuse. De tous les compositeurs anglais de sa génération il fut, avec son ami Malcolm Arnold, celui qui sut tirer le maximum d'effets d'un grand orchestre. Aussi à l'aise dans le "classique" que dans la musique de film, Walton a composé une œuvre très variée et toujours remarquablement bien orchestrée, à tel point que nous soupçonnons le compositeur américain John Williams de l'avoir particulièrement bien étudiée pour le traitement des cordes telles que nous les entendons, par exemple, dans « Star Wars » (1977). La suite de sa partition écrite pour le film de Paul Czinner « Escape Me Never/Tu m'appartiens » (1935) est un bon exemple du savoir-faire de Walton et de ce que d'aucuns appellent la "musique sérieuse de film" (à rapprocher d'Arthur Bliss : « Things to come, suite » (1936) ; Constant Lambert : « Merchant Seamen, suite » (1942) et « Anna Karenina, suite » (1948) ; Arnold Bax « Oliver Twist, suite » (1948), ces œuvres peuvent être écoutées sur collectionCB).
Arrangée des « Five Bagatelles for guitar solo », l'étonnante suite « Varii Capricci » (1976) pour orchestre a donné au Britannique William Walton l'occasion de prouver une nouvelle fois sa science de l'orchestration. L'imagination du compositeur évolue d'un instrument à un autre comme l'oiseau au milieu des branches.

Compositeur de génie, orchestrateur incomparable et immédiatement identifiable, William Walton a conservé jusqu'au bout, envers et contre toutes les "écoles", son style, sa "patte", comme on le dit d'un peintre, subtile et grandiose.

Man I wish the Lento sognando was longer. I first heard it through Julian bream, and it sounds even better played in this arrangement.
