- We have been sitting on this one for a long time- many years- but thanks to Lizz Fisher, we can finally post this. Thanks as well to Romain Coquette, who helped gather permission from the band to post the one song that has since gone a bit viral.
This version is a higher quality transfer off of Lizz' (the show's host AND producer) personal tape. And with this, all of the Sacto Active rock shows have now been documented and released. All of them (and thousands more) are available on the sacramentomusicarchive.com website.
Recorded by: Lizz Fisher
Transfer by: Shayne Stacy
Equipment used: JVC HRS9911U and Canopus ADVC300
commenter sickboypunk1 had a good question- where's abe? He was in a band named Phallucy at the time. You can see their episode here: sacramentomusicarchive.com/1991/01/01/phallucy-sacto-active-rock-sacramento-cable-episode-5-1991/
That's rightttt!!!! They made a new album years later...thanks for that. Pd: Terry date made an incredible job toooo
Im pretty sure Abe was in India with David Lynch, each paying $1m to say hello to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
3 cameras and a microphone, thank you for that link too.
They actually shout out Phallucy right before the first song - Stef must have been playing a cover of theirs I guess
1000%
So cool to see Chino as a huge awkward kid. I love it.
Yeah his stage movements are cringey here
For serious 😂 but he always had that dawg in him, he just had to grow into it a bit 😎
He definetly figured himself out from this to adrenaline
@@RumoursOfFamine All these comments are so pretentious
Somebody please show this to Deftones and record their reaction.
I'd totally love a reaction channel by them :D Would be hilarious
WE NEED THAT
i can honestly say this is some deftones ive never heard before
yes i've heard the demos for decades, but never seen video of any of them played back then
I can honestly say this is some deftones I wish i never heard.. holy cow.
Same and I’ve been a huge fan since 93 or 94
because you haven’t heard the Like Linus album
@@donnyjackomis968 I mean I like this better than Adrenaline or any early demo they did
“What are your plans for the future? Are you working on a demo?”
“By the time you see this it’ll be out.”
Yeah that’s an understatement
For reals. I've been a fan since 97 and never seen this.
incredible.
It was so cool to hear that…like damn man, they’ve come so far 😩
You can hear how they were between so many burgeoning styles of the time. There’s tinges of grunge , goth, early 90s hardcore, alt metal reggae and alt rock . How incredibly cool
The 90s
@@Tyler-nn8gk naw, deftones
Yeah, this is one of the most early 90's things I've ever seen.
@@The__Leo Of Deftones? Or at all? lol
@@The__Leo lol
The Deftones are:
Two Bit - guitar
Chi-no Wong - vocals
Chi Wang - bass
Man in the Box - drums
haha he looked like layne
@@Dontlettheworldrot and layne was a drummer so i'm confuse xD
Chino Moreno ??
Lmaoooo "man in the box"
The drummer is the dog that gets beat
Layne Staley on drums - FUCK YESSSS!
Yeah 🤘🏻
Hahahahaha sounds good 🤣🤣🤣
HAHAHAHA hell yeah! Weirdly, Layne actually COULD play drums back then, and quite well too.
No shit. Layne on drums.
@@lukewilson4782 you're right!! It IS LAYNE ON DRUMS!
Is it just me or does Chino sound like Maynard(Opiate EP era). Its amazing to see how far he has come vocally from these early days.
this may have been when his voice was it's strongest, cause he hadn't shredded his voice from all the screaming too much yet
i thought the same thing, very much like maynard on the early tool demos
He sounded damn good back then. Chino can't hit notes like that anymore, unfortunately, but I do like the way his singing evolved, though. Very original voice.
@@THESLOWDEATHHOOKS 100% he found his own style and crafted it. You can hear it evolving on Adrenaline......and by Around The Fur he had found his lane
agreed, first thing I thought of was Maynard back in the Opiate days...I am sure they we're a big influence on these guys. Also, throw in some basic grunge/punk from that era....You have the old Deftones...What a difference from Adrenaline LOL
I love when reggae guitar switch into a majestic riff
Thought i would never see something like this!! Pre adrenaline era damn!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Oh my God I didn't know Regulo Caro liked Deftones ._.
PD: un saludo a NU - POSTING y Compra y Venta de música pirata
Chi bien joven.

@@ShimiShimiALD yes i know now i shall edit my comment
@@chillykaia hey I know you guys hahaha
@@jerrytool8777 hahaha yes.
Slinky? I thought it was Dope demo
I love his early singing voice. So smooth.
I feel like Alien Ant Farm saw this back in the early 90s and said ‘this is our sound’
Actually the core members of AAF were playing in hardcore bands around this time.
Chino adopted the squeal from Matt Patton.
you can really hear the cure and Depeche mode influence chino had in this
And also Bad Brains with the punk/reggae influence
and also the smiths
What I hear more is Faith No More... that's their parents!
Stef is a lot better of a guitarist than he makes himself out to be. Dude knows he can play but just chooses to not go overboard and showcase how well he knows his fretwork for the sake of the bands style.
Yes, that is how stylization works.
THE STRONG!
Yeah I was surprised at how many different guitar techniques Steph used here. I think he sells himself short as a player.
Steph is a bad as fuck guitarist he will go down as one of the greatest of all time his range of sound and creative vision is incredible. Every album has a new sound coming from him. Very very good guitarist
Definitely a "Team player" 👍
Can we talk about Stef....this guy knew what he wanted then...most talented and ahead of his time in the band here
This is the only place you will find Stephen doing guitar solos 😂
They have been covering Weezer pretty often live.
Wish they did have solos.
Haha ✔️
@@EyesHaveMiles420 I low key do also and I high key hope Chino is the one that plays them
@@neilpatrickhairlesshe plays rhythm
Baby Chino is the cutest. You can tell they have the stirrings of greatness
I’m fucking crying, this is GOLD!!!! The best video I’ve found in very long time... forever DEFTONES!
it's off the wall.....can't even believe i just saw this....this has to stay up forever
Man people with the same emotion for a band that has been a crutch for a big part of my life, would be a true blessing to hang out with ✌️
The Smiths/ Morrissey influence on Chino is evident in this show
Chino was like 19 in this.. so crazy how young they all were.. also so glad abe came back
also, you can def hear them trying to find their sound.. pretty rad.. i hear 311 in there, etc..
Public access, for you youngsters, was the closest thing we had to UA-cam pre-internet. Nobody ever watched it. This is tremendous, and now I'm wondering what other super obscure stuff I can find.
I remember discovering music on public access here in Houston in the late 90's and Hole was one of the bands they showed 9ne late night. And I was just wondering who the hell this lady with her boobs out was and why she was doing the things she was doing. 🤣
Better off that'a way...
Before Chino was old enough to grow his famous goatee.
Love this!
Some big Morrissey moments in those vocals.
Totally!
A little Maynard James Keenan, too.
yup...right from the start....well he said he DOES love Morrissey
Elvis Presley
When you remember he’s Latino

Interviewer: “How long have you guys been together as a band?”
Chi: “I don’t know but, I can say that we really like movies about gladiators!”
Interviewer: “This is not only the band that plays together, but they ‘play’ together, if you know what I mean!”
Lmao this video is gold, how have I not seen this before?
yea the interview parts were funny and light hearted, cool interviewer. great live show. absolute treasure of a video
And Chino losing it right after XD
This is amazing. Always wanted to see early Deftones having known they did plenty of stuff pre Adrenaline. Thanks to everyone involved in bringing this to YT. Super appreciated.
Yeah. These early cable shows with bands when they were just starting out are fucking treasures that need to be preserved.
A proshoot of Like Linus? This is a dream come true
So they started out as a funk metal band with Chino doing The Cure/The Smiths style vocals. Not surprising since the majority of the early nu metal bands started out playing funk metal (LAPD/Korn, Powerman 5000, Incubus, Sugar Ray, Snot).
Papa Roach and even Slipknot
HUUUUUGE snot fan here. RIP lynn & Dobbs
Most of these nu-metal bands was influenced by Faith No More, Bad Brains, Living Colour, Mr. Bungle, so it's not a big surprise.
Yea.. Mate Feed Kill Repeat has some very funky pieces in it
@@travisg999 I met Lynn when they played at the cattle club. He was such an awesome person.
I don't recognize Chino. He's so fresh-faced in this.
this surfaces 29 years later. "aaaaaaaamazin"
They played every 90s genre all in one set. Love the ska bit and grunge sounds!! Deftones rule!!!
Wow this is the earliest deftones vid ive seen
i think there a 30 sec clip of them from 1990 on youtube, but it's kinda pixelated bad quality. still cool though
We need an "where are they now" on Liz Fisher.
Her daughter or son posted a comment on here.
This is better than gold. One love for Chi!
Ancient. Hard to believe this stuff has surfaced. “Saved”
wow the fusion these dudes have is crazzzyyyyy, i didn't realize it till i watched this, chino sound like Morrissey or Maynard at times but doing his own thing all while they are playing reggae funk punk metal haha
It amazes me how dynamic this band has been since their start.
Damn. Stef was a tone junkie from the very beginning. 💙
30 years later... Still badass
This is a rare gem for sure. Never thought I'd run into such a thing at this point in the Deftones game. Thanks internet.
I was that kid in high school driving a blue Mazda pickup cranking the white pony album ☺ I still LOVE that album!
Some great playing by Chi in this especially whatever song this was at 17:40. He definitely had a lot of groove.
Chi played Musicman Stingrays back then until after Adrenaline when he started playing P-basses. He’s doing a lot more w the Stingray here bc it’s a more diverse bass.
that faith no more, badbrains influence shines quite big here.
i was thinking the same thing on song #2
all of their influences do....they're so young...all they had was the music they listened to for inspiration at that point....and it sounds GREAT...a clear mix of different styles....kind of original....they sound like one day they'll be stars.....Chino's vocals are a clue to where they would be headed one day.....his singing is very creative and ambitious here...that's the real sign here that these kids are on their way
The sound and character of the guitar however is quite consistent to later songs though. Chino touches on finding his voice, though then loses it.
@@kingfillins6662 he learned those screams from mike patton, listen to songs like malpractice or crack hitler or caffeine and where mike does these agro screams that pair up to chinos
exactly what i taught
I f*cking love Answers man, sick perfomance.
I remember seeing Chi in a Tower Records training viddy that we had to watch when you got hired. This was in 2002 but the video was several years older than that. He was part of the Tower family!!
Best comment
Dude I remember the same thing when o got hired in 2000!
Deftones is one of nu metal Pioneer. cant believe they play this new rock in early 90's. RIP chi Cheng .
chino sounds like maynard
Yes and also a lot like mike patton!
And the reporter looks like Maynard.
Difference is that Chino is 100000x better than Maynard
@@Anthonybchannel as much as i love chino idk if i'd agree with that statement. not to mention chinos influenced by mjk among others.
I’m a big fan I gotta admit this is pure fire, rare as hell... thank you whoever helped making it happen! Like Linus era is the most difficult and unlikely to get footage era but it’s finally here! And that Slinky song.... mind blowing! THANK YOU FOR THIS!
this is pure gold. dude its awesome!!!! i love deftones.. i miss chi cheng.
This causes an incredible feeling in me, I don't know how to describe it. Deftones is the best
I can hear some adrenaline like riffs in here
Some drums too. This is amazing to see after all these years wow lol. I've never heard this until now. Been listening to them since the mid 90's too, Crazy.
Today on phone was talking about my nephew moving to Sacramento, the kids are moving there I hear? So this vid shows up, AI heard me... been a Deftones fan for a long time.... coincidence?
Awesome. Early Deftones and Incubus were very similar. I was fortunate enough to see them together at Red Rocks. Magic.
I was at that show! So awesome!
His voice was perfect in this
Seen them open up with limp bizkit for korn back in 95. Talk about a great show!
Bizkit & Tones?.....together?......WOW......i can't even believe what you just said

Several years later I heard My Own Summer and was instantly a fan. Finally got to see them live in Wichita in 2007.
You can really hear the Morrisey Vibes here!
Thank you so much for everybody involved in this coming to light

Depeche Mode...Morrisey....all of Chino's influences can be heard here......and THIS ROX by the way...it's like magical or something...it's just too surreal...they're kids.....it's soooo crazy...this vid is GOLD.....
This is awesome. Love how you can hear influences that you hear them quoting now (The Cure, Morrisey, the 80s kinda singing) as well as the very 90s sounding mix of ska etc...they're kinda still finding their feet and crafting their own style, refreshing to see
Thankyou so much whoever uploaded this
There's no Word strong enough to describe how I love this material. Thanks dude... You wouldn't believe what I did this tracks hahah
Ahhh it's you the remaster guy
Chi was hilarious “No Deftones is a Chinese name” How long you been a band? “2 weeks” 😂
This is actual gold. Thank you !!!!

All the songs on this is on point!! I really love early Deftones, seeing a video like that one it's like discovering a very hidden gem. Deftones for life💜🤘🏻🤘🏻
Love this.
So cool seeing them starting to find their sound.
And kudos to Liz for knowing how to have fun with the interview and growing along with the bands goofy answers.
Oro puro cómo se extraña el viejo Deftones gracias My friend🔥🔥🔥🔥
Lizz is a great interviewer. How many hosts do you see just get lost the second a band won't answer and goof around, but she is all into it all and gets the band enamored with her and to chat!
I can't believe I've never heard this until now. There's been alot of time that's gone by since the 90's. Wow... This is dope.
