Several Islamic scholars and experts have discussed the concept of layers or levels of meaning in the Quran. Here are a few notable references:
1. Al-Ghazali (1058-1111)
One of the most prominent Islamic theologians and mystics, Al-Ghazali, spoke extensively about the deeper meanings of the Quran. In his work *"Ihya Ulum al-Din" (The Revival of the Religious Sciences)*, he discusses how the Quran contains both an outward, literal meaning and a deeper, inner meaning.
2. Ibn Arabi (1165-1240)
A renowned Sufi mystic and philosopher, Ibn Arabi emphasized the esoteric interpretations of the Quran. His works, such as *"Fusus al-Hikam" (The Bezels of Wisdom)* and *"Futuhat al-Makkiyah" (The Meccan Revelations)*, delve into the multiple layers of meaning within the Quranic text.
3. Rumi (1207-1273)
The famous Persian poet and Sufi mystic, Rumi, also explored the layered meanings of the Quran in his poetry and prose. In his *"Mathnawi"*, Rumi often interprets Quranic verses in a metaphorical and mystical manner.
4. Tafsir al-Jalalayn
This is a classical Sunni tafsir (Quranic exegesis) composed by Jalal ad-Din al-Mahalli and Jalal ad-Din as-Suyuti. It highlights various levels of interpretation, from the literal to the more allegorical.
5. Al-Tabari (838-923)
In his comprehensive tafsir, *"Jami' al-bayan fi ta'wil al-Qur'an"*, Al-Tabari discusses the multi-layered nature of the Quranic verses, addressing both their apparent and hidden meanings.
These references illustrate the rich tradition of interpreting the Quran at various levels, recognizing that its verses can hold multiple layers of meaning beyond the literal.
