I was actually sent this by in error to what I actually wanted (the copper handle) and I like it so much I didn’t even contact customer service. I just ended up re ordering what I originally wanted and kept this because of how awesome it was.
Greetings from Waimea,Hi. Great review on this knife. Just ordered on for about $33.00 from Amazon. I enjoy watching your videos and find them very informative. You’re one of my favorite knife guys. Looking forward for your future videos
I’m really impressed with SMKW for coming up with these. It’s the mod-trad trendy thing, it looks like that $300 knife moneyed guys are carrying, and you can customize it by swapping blades within the series. And the price! Bloody brilliant! I bet they could sell blade assortments, too. I like the spear point and chisels, but not so much the spey or whatever that is on the titanium. Hmmmm. Maybe add another color of micarta for those of us that don’t want the weight of copper or brass. Thanks for the review!
Ordered this knife for my dad to replace his victorinox, it bothers me at his age there's no half stop. This thing blew my mind, and is honestly one of the best looking knives ive ever laid eyes on. Might have to go back and order one for myself lol. Great review i hope they keep pumping these things out.
My local knife shop carries this brand and I have bought a ton of them. I have no idea how they can crank out a Micarta and VG10 knife like this, that is so well put together, for only $30. Its crazy, but I love the knife!
I just got mine in the mail today from SMKW and I have to say I’m not the least bit impressed with the fit, finish, or quality of this knife. You can definitely tell that the knives that get reviewed on UA-cam are the best QC’d from Rough Ryder. I totally understand that these are around $30, but that’s no excuse for having 2 different size scales, gaps in the back spring, a very grindy action, and the bolsters looked like they came off a used knife. I’m not upset about the purchase at all, I’ll use the hell out of it, but I really don’t understand all the hype behind this brand. Civivi, Sencut, QSP, and so many other budget knife companies have multiple knives at this price point and the quality of all these other brands blows RR out of the water.
@@molonlabe3083 I have a ton of RRR knives, including this APTA and none of them have the issues you are describing. I don't have any "reviewer" knives, I have knives I went and paid for with my own money, at a local knife shop. The things you describe, sound like a Case knife.
Thanks for you coverage on these knives. I searched for “quality budget slip joints” and found your videos on these. Bought this one! Gonna buy the rest soon I think! Has anyone done edge retention tests on their VG-10 to test heat treatment? If no, I’d be interested in something like that.
It seems to hold an edge every bit as good as spydercos vg10 in my experience thus far. I have used a blue and black mini trapper, stockman, hunter slipjoit for awhile now and they have been great. Recently using Apta and wasp series, I am very happy with their vg10
I've had quality control issues with Rough Ryder. Bought a couple and they are great. Bought a couple more to give as gifts and they were really bad. Got my money back no problem but put me off buying again. But this one has me interested again.
Thanks Jesse it is a great knife. Do you call him Every Day Cody in person or just Cody? 'Cus if you do that's pretty funny and I hope you continue to do so. Tell him hello for me.

Some seem to really enjoy that blade. It's really not all that bad and seems a useful shape to me, just not my favorite among the blades APTA offers. The copper handles are real nice and weighty. Thanks Sam.

Thanks for actually doing a quality review on this knife 👍. Your channel happened to be my second stop on UA-cam to look at this model, and I actually got the information I was wondering about. The first video I watched from a different Channel said this knife had titanium bolsters and liners 😄. I was so confused how that could be possible for this low of a price but he sounded pretty confident. I've seen Two Sun do some really inexpensive titanium modern locking folders, so who knows what RR can offer in slip joints🤷.
The APTA series is offered in different handle materials and different prices accordingly. They range from about $18 for the red aluminum one up to $47 or so for the Titanium one. This micarta one is kinda in the middle of the range. Thanks, Flip.
@@ThriftyKaniffy I did see the titanium handled one RR2286 for more money. I didn't care for the blade too much. The one I'm interested in, and was watching the other video on, was the Sheepsfoot/RR2285 with the blue Micarta handles like yours in this video👍. He claims RR2285 Sheepsfoot with blue Micarta has titanium bolsters and also has a titanium frame underneath the Blue Micarta I'm 99% sure he's incorrect . You said it has stainless steel bolsters and I'm pretty confident that you're right, and he was mistaken on his video. Being that I don't have the knife in front of me in person pretty-much makes me go off the color of the bolster and your opinion over his👍. The bolsters on video look more like stainless steel to me just not gray enough to be titanium. I'm actually thinking of buying both the RR2286 titanium handled one and the RR2285 Micarta and just swapping the sheepsfoot blade back and forth between the two.
Yes, it has that modern/traditional goodness in bucket fulls, really like this one. It seems to have enough bulk in the handle to remain comfortable with prolonged use. Nice lines, not busy at all. I could see this one being purchased. Very nice TK!
It does have enough "bulk" to be comfortable. I like it alot and ordered a second one. The warbcliff blade is beautiful and I put a mirror p9lished edge. Also ordered the red-handed apta for the spear point blade to install on this model. Sharpening choice is f8ne and hglad there is NO silly jimping.. the pull on my two are same and I'd say a 7 too, see how the red one is when it gets here.
I happen to get one of these models and mine needed a little cleaning and had a few spots of glue on the covers. I cleaned it with some mineral oil and waxed the knife. The mineral oil darkens the covers more to my liking and the wax added grip to the Micarta. This seems to help maintain the color not changing from other things that could stain the the knife.🙂
Those are some nice ideas, Gizmo. I appreciate the feedback. I've found that if you want and try to bring the micarta back to original, sometimes a repeated application of rubbing alcohol will do the trick. Takes some patience though.
Hi TK, Really like this one and will put my hand in pocket for one when they hit the UK despite the lousy exchange rates for us just now. @@ThriftyKaniffy just a heads up, hero outdoors is a well known scam in Canada...don't go near them. Honestly I may have to try and get this knife from the UK...go figure, order from a company across the Atlantic...thousands of kilometers away, yet I can't get it from just across the border with our nearest neighbors. 🤔
@@ThriftyKaniffy well from what I can piece together from friends that have dealt with them and the Better Business Bureau, they don't deliver on their products. Their website looks slick and fully stocked, but in reality they have no inventory. You place your order, they take your money and you wait and wait. Months go by and with customers contacting them more than several times, they claim that there is delays in products from China...that's always their excuse. No refunds are given and eventually people seem to give up. I've known no one who has gotten anything they've ordered. I contacted the BBB, and they give them an F rating, yet as far as I understand the BBB, can't shut them down. I'm not sure what regulatory body deals with this though. And I'm sure customers are not going to sue them over a $29 knife...this has been going on pre-covid. Really disgraceful. Here in Canada it is a wasteland for buying knives(other than kitchen knives). Really only two companies that you can order from but they don't have the best selection like you Americans. Also with exchange rates and mark ups knives here cost double what you pay. Crazy. I live a fifteen minutes walk from the Canada/US border. I could walk over to your country and buy knives but it's kinda awkward explaining to Border Services why I'm crossing the border with dozens of knives...plus I get dinged with a 13% duty when crossing...so like I said kind of a knife wasteland here.
Thanks for showing this knife. It is a great knife especially at the price, solid build, have 2 and the red one on the way. Oh and do not pry with ANY knife especially a small folder, why would you even say that? That is a knife newbie action to pry with a knife, bit taken back to hear a knife knut like you say that. Oh well, to each their own.
Prying isn't something I recommend, but I know people will do it despite the cautionary tales. I'll not discuss it again if it bothers you that much, but in part I said that because at 27 dollars it wouldn't be the end of the world if the blade were to break. My bad.
Over here in England, this one is, (equivalent of) 47 dollars, !! If they come from China, how come yours, are so much cheaper than ours,,?? 🤔😢 I'm thinking of getting it tho', would you have paid 47 bucks for it.??
Yep, Sheepsfoot. Wharncliffe's have a constantly curving spine, although marketers will call a clip point a Wharncliffe if it'll sell it. Hence the confusion I think. The shame is, the Sheepsfoot design, all things being equal, is the more useful blade to my mind.
I forgot to say - Something looks odd with the blade. It looks shortened to avoid the lanyard hole, but that can't be right. They'd just put the hole through the spring instead, surely [scratches head].
Nah I'd say it was a design decision to shorten the blade enough to allow for the lanyard. I don't think it's worth complaining about. In fact there are plenty of knives that try to stretch the length too much and you can actually get the meat of your finger in there with little effort and cut yourself. Just my 2 cents.
@@ThriftyKaniffy Yeah, I see what you mean. They probably did keep the blade short for the lanyard hole. The Brother 1508 is an example where they didn't keep it short with the hole in the same position and you can cut your lanyard off with the tip in the closed position.
China is owning much of the knife market, their products get better by the month. Hard to pay the prices Benchmade and Spyderco are asking when even Rough Ryder is making attractive alternatives.

You rite the copper scales version is a sheepsfoot . This is a warnie
SMKW descriptions are wrong quite a bit on their website. This is just one of many examples.
Take a look at the Fox Nauta and tell me it’s not the same knife
Different blade but everything else is the same
@@terrillschneider3778 They are similar. I prefer having the the bolsters on the APTA, and the price is half as much.
Just decided to carry the Nauta this morning after a long layoff so it was fresh on my mind No offense intended but the Nauta is a really good knife
Hard to beat for 30 bucks.
Indeed! The price point is so good I may buy more. Thanks Zen
China is owning much of the knife market, their products get better by the month. Hard to pay the prices Benchmade and Spyderco are asking when even Rough Ryder is making attractive alternatives.
Times are tough, money is tight, you have to buy what fits the budget. Thank you Beau.
@@ThriftyKaniffy Indeed.
These are 100% on my buy list.
Excellent. Let us know how you like it, when received. Thanks Rusty.
Thanks West. 👍👍👍
