A tip for the wii and gamecube games, if you're the type of person who's uncomfortable with downloading roms off the internet, you can mod a wii (entirely software, no actual hardware modding required), install homebrew, and rip your legally purchased games onto the wii. From there you can just launch the games directly off your wii, and they'll run just like you were using a disc
Interesting, interesting. I'll have to look into that because I kept my Wii and Wii U consoles. I may just mod them both and call it a day. I have a decent collection of comics/books/manga/games/music and sometimes I think about what could happen with it in the future. For many reasons it may happen that I’ll have to sell a bunch of it. Man I feel your pain and I respect you for having to make the best decision for your family and yourself but what u lost can always come back brother awesome video and keep going u reminded to cherish the collection I built over the years
I appreciate the kind words man. It does suck, but who knows, maybe this video game bubble will crash and I can buy these games back for cheap LOL. But in all honesty, I have a feeling that I'll get back into collecting in the future. I don't know if I'll be as serious as I was, but I would like to get back into the hobby. I'm all for emulating (which I'll probably do some here in the future) but I love physical games.
Honestly, the only thing I can say that's a criticism is that selling the CONSOLES, rather than just the games, is kind of bad. Not saying it isn't necessary, but keeping at least the consoles, if modded, will still allow you to play a lot of games for them. If you're interested in them, of course.
I did keep my Wii, Wii U, and Switch. I'm debating on modding my Wii or Wii U. I've heard the Wii U is great for emulation, especially for consoles like the DS.
@@Throggy It actually is. It's really cool. Though, probably should get a DSi xl and mod it for DS. Wii U's DS is cool, but really finnicky with anti-piracy, and there's also the weird dark filter. Wii is good for playing Wii and Gamecube games, but it also has really good emulation for a lot of other systems. You just need a good scaler, like a Retrotink 5x or 4k, to get a better picture, and I don't know what the used rates for those are.
@@Ijustusethistocommentstuff Interesting interesting. I'll look into it then. I actually have been trying to buy a Retrotink but sheesh those prices lol. I've heard they are worth the investment if you are serious about recording videos. Plus I wouldn't have to buy those cheap crappy HDMI adapters.
I recently went through some stuff in life that led me to want a change. I sold my dremacast collection, psp, switch collection, and ps3 collection as well my blu ray collection. I purchased a pre built pc with rx7700, a 2nd pc i built my myself for HT w 4070ti, rog ally x, a projector instead of a tv. Mainly playing emulators. Also bought the new ps5 slim. I also have a raid hard drive setup full of movies instead of shelf full of movies. Im 37 and was collecting for years and felt like I grew out of collecting old crap
@@Throggy You said the same thing two years ago, and now, this is something that you yourself have to do due to supporting your family? Anyways, I'm just saying that me myself in my case, I would never ever do that as I would never grow out of anything that I like and/or love dearly.
@ppgranja3 NOPE!!! NOPE!!! NOPE!!! I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER sell my video game collection. That is something I never want to do since it's been part of my whole life since childhood and I would NEVER grow out of anything I like and/or love dearly.
I hope you don't stop doing UA-cam I only been a fan for about a couple weeks but I watched all your videos and I find you very entertaining I hope at some point you can upload a little bit more frequently and you can find a better standing ground and I hope since you just sold 80% of your stuff I still hope that with the stuff you have and with the emulations you have you can still upload decent amount.
Meh, everyone's entitled to their opinions, but you aren't wrong about the typical stigma around collectors for that matter. I also bought a good chunk of my game collection prior to COVID and the price hikes on most games. So I didn't spend as much money buying them as some people may think I did. For example, I bought most of my Gamecube collection before those prices went through the roof. Same can be said for the N64.
As much as it blows to have sell off all of those games, dumping them to a computer so that they can live till the end of time (save data too) is a beautiful, wonderful thing; at least for me. Plus I can still use the original controllers I already own for those older consoles. It did take time to setup, but dumping my games was the only reason I felt comfortable selling off my game collection
How did you do that? Wouldn't mind future proofing as time goes on honestly. I've seen a few people do that but I'm not entirely sure of how that process works.
This is ultimately the decision alot of people will have to do as they get older. Dont be ashamed most of those game you can emulate. Especially those og xbox games and 360 are on digital with backwards compatibility. If things get back to normal u can always try again but i opted out for digital long ago becauseis cheaper and less clutter and maintain a small collection.
I'm looking into some digital options just so I can at least play the games. I was looking into the Steam Deck, but apparently it's not all that great when using it docked. May just end up investing in a decent gaming PC in the future and calling it a day.
sorry mate glad you felt like you could do this with a clear conscious and I hope one day you can build it back up to what it once was all the luck with your living situation
Some of the older games you got rid of was because you had an emulator on your switch so you can always still make videos about those games since you have the membership and you can play the games by emulation
Good on you man. Seeing people say emulation, I definitely am stoked to have a genesis 1200 games in 1 and a snes 120 in 1. Helps to play so much and save space.
hey man, it happens, you will look back on this time and be so glad it all came together eventually. hopefully your youtube provides you a good side hustle in the meantime. when you get back into picking up some of these consoles in better times, please look into flash carts and softmod solutions. i have the n64, gamecube, ps2, dreamcast, and og xbox with flash cart on the n64 and softmods done to the rest, basically a ton of free retro games, so in total my collection is only worth like $650 because it's literally just consoles and controllers, the hundreds of games i have are just roms
I appreciate it. I have been keeping an eye on the flashcarts. I may go that route next time I start collecting again just so I'm not throwing so much money at video games. And as far as UA-cam being a side hustle, I got a long way to go on that one lol.
I'm sorry.... trust me it was a hard choice to let that one go. The copy I bought was in pristine condition. And I'm trying to get into RPGs myself, but the guy I sold it to was super excited to get it, so I'm glad that it went to a good home. I'm not the biggest RPG fan, but I think that's because I haven't really sat down with a lot of them and played them.
I don't get why you'd get rid of the Genesis mini After 2 years of NSO you'd be paying more for the games than you would by keeping it And after they inevitability shut down NSO all those games are gone forever
I'm not a huge Sega fan, so I didn't see a reason for me to keep it. And then when I move, I will barely have any room on my desk as it is, so I had to get rid of it because I wouldn't have any space. And if the NSO shuts down, meh, it is what it is. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo got rid of it because Nintendo makes decisions that nobody understands.
Local game stores are where I got most of mine. But I have a few local retro shops that I could go to when I was on the hunt for Playstation 3 games. I don't mind using something like Lukiegames because they are okay priced when it comes to cheaper titles.
Yes, I still plan on making videos in the future. I've had to change some of the stuff I was going to plan for next year, but I plan on making videos for quite some time.
Honestly, I’m starting to lean into digital gaming. I really love the feature of selecting what games you want on you’re console, instead of just switching the discs back and forth. It gets really annoying really fast, and having less shelves makes me look less like a hoarder. 😂
@@al1395-y3dI’m personally at a point where I’m fine financially, but I see what you mean. And I do have some physical games but just the ones I care about, and the rest I have digital. I used to have fomo, where I needed to collect everything special editions, soundtracks, art books, etc. I wouldn’t even open them, they would just lay there and stack up. But as soon as I started selling stuff and my room became a lot cleaner, I started to feel a whole lot better.
I'm leaning towards getting a Steam Deck for a lot of the third party games I'm interested in since Steam has great sales throughout the year. For the rest of the stuff, I'd like eventually get back to collecting some titles physically and then have the third part games on a Steam Deck or even gaming PC.
Man this is awful. I am sorry that you have to do this! But I totally feel the financial responsibility. You don't know how cheap things were until they're not. Hopefully, this grows your appreciation for what remains and allows you to be free of analysis paralysis, to enjoy more games deeply
why selling to pay for a nintendo suscrption?, just emulate them man, use the money of the collection in something important, the collection was important, the suscription is not
I don't mind paying for subscription since I play games online from time to time. Also, I know Mac has openEMU (which is great) but I'd prefer not to use my Macbook for any other purposes outside of recording/editing footage.
@@JamezMorrizProjectz Certain manufacturers fair better than others. Sony handled all pressings of their console discs and they have an excellent reputation. GameCube discs; however, I've learned are thinner and problems like cracking or oddly, mold can be an issue. Saturn and Sega CD are in jeopardy. While it is known disc rot is a problem for these systems, I don't believe the conditions which preserve them are known. I don't recall hearing any issues with Dreamcast or XBox discs. Those discs which do work without issue will become fewer. These are mostly totems, since the ROMs are easily accessible. I suspect that dead disks will initially run less than working but as the number of dead disks grow, those who want them will still pay a lot. This is similar to how people pay a lot for games which just include a DLC code, such as Marvel vs Capcom 2 on PS3. Though, this assessment does not include the natural cycles of nostalgia. Eventually those systems will fall out of favor. What keeps them alive is a thriving retro community which introduces older games to an ever-growing audience. The problem is with prices as high as they are, the typically younger audience getting into retro do not have as much assets and they are most likely split between buying new and buying old. Older gamers have old games which mature in value and they don't have to worry about finding the cash to buy a game that is now $300, since they bought it 20 years ago for $50.
@@WhatsOnMyShelf I'd be very surprised if the Wii shoots up like the Gamecube did. Then again I'm surprised at how expensive games are now so nothing is out of the question.
Hmmmm, that's a good question. Probably because I get attached to things I spend my money on is the best way to describe it. It's hard to let things go that I've worked hard for, so even though I haven't played something, I could see myself in the future playing it.
i can say, video games are just too expenisve anymore, old games used to be an accessble pass time for poorer folks like myself in 2011 now its retro and vintage and rare, no it isnt, the stuff sold really well, not alot of games are deserving of a price tag exceeding 20 usd
I've tried doing that before and it wasn't a great experience honestly. Off camera, I'm a pretty dry/bland person, and that doesn't translate to streaming all that well. At the moment, I don't really have the time/room/privacy to do so. Right now as far as content goes, I'm focused on growing this channel and then in the future I'll probably explore other avenues.
It always breaks my heart seeing people sell their video game collection. Years of hard work gone but I do understand why it happens. Family comes 1st. Hopefully your games get sold to kids or adults who need some happiness
The guy I sold it to said he was excited because he wanted his kids to experience some of the games in my collection. He also told me that he had to do the same thing a few years ago, and now he's back to collecting. So we'll see if the cycle repeats itself on my end. I have a feeling that I'll be collecting in the future, I just don't know how many years or exactly what that will look like on my end.
@@Throggy Not to mention tech working to put themselves out of business by developing AI to give a lift (ie slash jobs) by automating tasks. The creative jobs are in jeopardy as well as I've come across pretty convincing AI host channels which pop out documentary after documentary about subjects from space to videogames.
@@WhatsOnMyShelf Ehhhh, AI has a long way to go in my opinion before it starts being able to do what some people think it can already do. For example, the web developers where I work have tested AI out for coding purposes and while it does work at times, it's not the greatest at catching syntax errors, and sometimes it just spits out nonsense. Now 10-15 years from now, yeah I'll be curious to see what happens, but as of right now, AI is just another buzz word in the tech community to scare people. What should really scare people is that companies are just off shoring jobs to "save money." When it takes 4 hours to get a password changed they'll be pissed and the cycle will repeat itself.
@@Throggy Automation has always been the tool of programmers. That is why code has moved from BASIC to C#, etc. With the addition of AI, it's likely another shortcut that will allow reducing man-hours. The technology is rapidly evolving, so what may seem like a mess of noodles now will eventually be brilliant solutions. Coding is a language like the human language AI uses to compose stories or pictures and while it definitely involves putting a a lot of disparate information together to reach a goal, I could see AI handling that, based on how I've seen it compose other works. You are definitely correct about off-shoring being a threat, since that has been happening more and more. Again, it's a way of getting more man-hours for less.

If I was single, I'd probably just go work three jobs so I could keep all of my stuff, but since I have a wife and a kid, I'd prefer not to work 100 hours a week lol.
I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER sell my video game collection. Never. They will forever have an extremely special place in my heart.
I said the same thing two years ago and here I am lol.
@@Throggy You said the same thing two years ago, and now, this is something that you yourself have to do due to supporting your family?
Anyways, I'm just saying that me myself in my case, I would never ever do that as I would never grow out of anything that I like and/or love dearly.
Trust me. One day you will sell your collection. And the best part of it is that you will be just fine.
@@NinteSegaRarew oh shut up m0ron nobody cares go outside
He said he isn't "planning on making videos on final fantasy for few more years", so that to me implies he's not gonna stop youtube
I plan on making UA-cam videos still. I had to change some of the content I was planning for next year, but I don't plan on stopping any time soon!
@@its_just_seb I plan on being around for a while! I just had to change some of the video ideas I had for next year lol.
Well dang. I hate to see you have to sell your stuff man. Glad you were able to keep some of it. I hope things get better for you and your family!
I appreciate it man. Hopefully here in the future I can get back into collecting!
Good job on growing up. My collection now is like 40 games and like $1500 just games that are ones I actually love and most are < $20
I appreciate it lol.
Growing up has nothing to do with it. Dude would keep the collection if he could.
@@agarza3356 Yeah I'm 29....... so I'm technically grown at this point. Or at least my knees cracking every morning tell me I'm old lol.
29 is not old lol.
@@hhernandez8437 Exactly lol. People act like 29 is old. If I was 49, sure lol.
Wishing you the best in the future Throggy. Hopefully this wil be the last major downsize.
I hope so as well. Who knows, maybe one day I'll be able to buy a nice big house with plenty of space and not have to worry about money lol.
It doesn’t sound at all like you were struggling to “survive”. That’s my personal problem with game collectors. They are full of baloney.
Sounds like an arduous tasks that many have done before. Just download the widely available ROMs.
It sucks, but you have manned up and that’s mad respect. These things work themselves out in the long run.
The way I see things in life is that everything you own is just borrowed.
sorry mate glad you felt like you could do this with a clear conscious and I hope one day you can build it back up to what it once was all the luck with your living situation
I appreciate it. I'm probably going to emulate some of the handheld stuff for recording purposes since it's a pain to record any of that lol.
@Throggy haha I can imagine dude emulation has saved alot of us 😅
Some of the older games you got rid of was because you had an emulator on your switch so you can always still make videos about those games since you have the membership and you can play the games by emulation
Selling Skies of Arcadia REALLY hurts my RPG soul 😢
I'm sorry.... trust me it was a hard choice to let that one go. The copy I bought was in pristine condition. And I'm trying to get into RPGs myself, but the guy I sold it to was super excited to get it, so I'm glad that it went to a good home. I'm not the biggest RPG fan, but I think that's because I haven't really sat down with a lot of them and played them.
Good video man !
I don't get why you'd get rid of the Genesis mini
After 2 years of NSO you'd be paying more for the games than you would by keeping it
And after they inevitability shut down NSO all those games are gone forever
I'm not a huge Sega fan, so I didn't see a reason for me to keep it. And then when I move, I will barely have any room on my desk as it is, so I had to get rid of it because I wouldn't have any space. And if the NSO shuts down, meh, it is what it is. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo got rid of it because Nintendo makes decisions that nobody understands.
Where can I buy some of those games? I have a PS3 and I thinking about buying one or two of those games.
Local game stores are where I got most of mine. But I have a few local retro shops that I could go to when I was on the hunt for Playstation 3 games. I don't mind using something like Lukiegames because they are okay priced when it comes to cheaper titles.
Good for you man! I’m trying to get out the game myself
Really? Apparently there's quite a few collectors who are getting out of the game.
somebody has to sell so others may buy and experience. Circle of gaming life.
This is very true. The guy I sold my stuff to said the same thing to me in a different way.
I am in the middle of the same thing. Over a decade worth of stuff
Oof, how is that one going for you? Are you selling it as a lot, or selling it individually?
two people working full time and they cant afford to play video games thanks obama
Will u still try to do videos with what you have and your space?
Yes, I still plan on making videos in the future. I've had to change some of the stuff I was going to plan for next year, but I plan on making videos for quite some time.
Honestly, I’m starting to lean into digital gaming. I really love the feature of selecting what games you want on you’re console, instead of just switching the discs back and forth. It gets really annoying really fast, and having less shelves makes me look less like a hoarder. 😂
An advantage of physical is that you can sell it if time get rough tho
Heartbreaking video
It really is. At least I kept most of my Gamecube collection.
Man this is awful. I am sorry that you have to do this! But I totally feel the financial responsibility. You don't know how cheap things were until they're not. Hopefully, this grows your appreciation for what remains and allows you to be free of analysis paralysis, to enjoy more games deeply
I appreciate it. I'm hoping this frees me up to play Dragon Quest here in the future lol.
Also, link to your selling page, please?
Sorry, I forgot to mention in the video that I already sold everything to a guy in my area. He gave me a decent price as well.
why selling to pay for a nintendo suscrption?, just emulate them man, use the money of the collection in something important, the collection was important, the suscription is not
I don't mind paying for subscription since I play games online from time to time.
Also, I know Mac has openEMU (which is great) but I'd prefer not to use my Macbook for any other purposes outside of recording/editing footage.
Bro I have done the exact same thing multiple timess. I recently sold a lot of my Saturn stuff for the very same reason
Super Mario Strikers is such a great game!
It really is. It has so much more personality than the one on the Switch.
best to sell them now this crazy fad wont last forever. I started in early 2000 when it was cheap. I wouldnt actually BUY anything today. sell it.
I wouldn't mind if the bubble burst. At least I could get back into collecting without spending an arm and a leg.
It depends on the market. PS1 is on the up now. Eventually Wii will be on the up.
@@WhatsOnMyShelf remember those cd based games are starting to rot
3:20 how attached could you be to a game you bought, never played (because you probably emulated it years ago) and then sold? serious question.
You should start to do livestreams be cool thing to see
I've tried doing that before and it wasn't a great experience honestly.
I have a feeling that I'll be collecting in the future, I just don't know how many years or exactly what that will look like on my end.
you already have Dragon Quest 12?!?! :0
Did I say the name wrong..... crap LOL
Noooo Throggy😭😭 wtf
I know man.... but diapers and wipes aren't cheap LOL. That grocery bill kills me on a monthly basis.
8:45 why not pronounce the game's name?
Because I didn't want to completely butcher it lol.
Two people working can’t afford life here. Oof
It's rough out here. Doesn't help the job market is terrible as well. And the tech sector is being hit hard with companies sending jobs overseas.
