      Isn't the netflix version based on the blurays?

      Standard definition looks good on old television sets but on new displays you can see just how much of a downgrade it is from reality.

      That's because streaming services use compression. You're best off torrenting the Remux blu-rays if you don't want to buy the set yourself (and a blu-ray player.)

    The quality is almost too good at points because it exposes some of the lower quality costuming. Still, the new hd versions are incredible.

    Godamn you can see so much more detail in the eyes, the faces, the clothes. HD really makes everything better.

    They oriented themselves in the "effect shots" pretty much close to the original. Even the Ships aren't made in CG, they are taken from the Camera Negatives. The details that can be seen on the models are stunning.

    finally someone did a decent comparison, I can't wait for this release on Blu-ray, for years I thought that they would not bother re-releasing Next Generation because looking at it on TV, it looks like it was recorded on SD digital video. Although I think we are giving DVD a hard time, as it was/is a decent format for SD releases if done properly

    This not only makes me think the blu-ray looks amazing, but that I remember how fucking amazing TNG really was.

  • @MultiWieauchimmer
    @MultiWieauchimmer 11 років тому +1

    That's not quite right. You're mixing that up with the original series, there is an Option to switch between old and new Effekts, because the new scenes of the Enterprise are all created in the computer, as opposed to TNG where they used the material of the cameras for the models.

    Amazing just how sharp Bluray is :O

    Huh, I remember Worf's skin looking that kind of muddy brown in the original broadcasts. Now, with hi-def, he looks dirty and sweaty like the TOS Klingons.

    TNG is such a high-budget, incredibly well-made show that even when you look at the prosthetics, sets, miniatures, etc. they not only still hold up but look even better under microscopic HD detail. I also like the color grading of the remaster better. Faces look more natural and less tinted. What I don't like though you can't really see here--the redone effects. There aren't too many of them compared to other shows, but things like the re-done transporter effect or the starfield in the intro, or the text displaying the credits I prefer in the original SD version. I also prefer how the SD version has a sort of ineffable feel to it where you feel more immersed, like the place on the screen feels real rather than a show. However, it's a worthy tradeoff to much better appreciate the gorgeous sets, costumes, et. al. in HD. I just wish they didn't re-do in CGI some of the effects, but again thankfully most effects are consistent with the original so that's good.

  • @Digi20
    @Digi20 11 років тому +1

    i always say that models still have an edge over cgi - gladly there are only a few scenes which are done entirely in cgi. most are completely redone, but use the original film negatives. they look so stunning.

    I,m a big fan of classic sci-fi. Have the original series on Blu Ray and love the improvements. Cannot wait for Lost In Space T.O.S which looks even better in the remastering done for that. Land Of The Giants, and other Irwin Allen Sci Fi. Also Gerry Anderson Shows. Man From Uncle, The Invaders I hope they are Blu Rayed as well soon. Hell I'm 10 years old again. Just show's you how good quality the original 35mm neg is.
    I think they would hold up in 4K (ULTRA HD). Not bad as these shows are made 45-50 years ago.

    IN. credible. nice job man. well done. I spent 200 bucks a season when TNG originally released on DVD. Remember way back when, when the only TV shows on DVD were TNG and the X-files? (side note; what gave birth to the internet? Star Trek and Porn.) I can't quite justify the expense yet, but your comparison certainly makes me think some sacrifices may be in order...

  • @Langkowski
    @Langkowski 2 місяці тому

    The original show was shot on 35mm film, but converted to analog tape for editing purposes in post-production. The Blu-Ray restoration was made by scanning the original 35mm negatives.

    This is a very interesting contribution. I found that proper upscalers embedded in blu-ray or dvd players can do a very good job, because they know more about the footage (whether it is interlaced or not etc.). In particular Panasonic blu-rays do a fantastic job. On the other hand, I also have a media player based on a sigma designs chip (Dune HD). The media player is good at playing almost anything. But the upscaling done by that is not amazing at all. Feathering, flicker all over the place.

    Nemo Holemaker This CG shot was before they found the original elements.
    They are remastering with the original film elements if they're found. :)
    They've also recently updated the CG model with Season 5 onward, here's a new shot of the CG model:

    And here:

    And here:
    tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images-s5review/tngs5-blu-review-flyby.jpg
    Here's are 3 shots of the 4 foot model:

    tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images-s5review/review16.jpg
    tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images-s5review/review40.jpg
    Here's the 6 foot model:
    tng.trekcore.com/hd/albums/3x01/evolution_hd_264.jpg
    After the original elements in the first shot in this video were found for Season 2:
    tng.trekcore.com/hd/albums/2x08/amatterofhonor_hd_142.jpg
    This video was made before Season 3 came out, probably using the sampler disc, I don't think the shot was updated for the season release though... but all in all, the remastering is astonishing.

      I guess that's not bad. Less than $10. a season. On a side note, one of my favorite episodes is S5 "The Game." Granted, Wesley knew they were infected by the game. But what can be more frightening than being chased by people you know are your friends, and they're trying to inflict you with the same addiction they have?

    Wow, greatly remastered, the BluRay indeed looks a lot better - except for the ship from the outside. The CGI Enterprise looks so flat and artificial, like an old computer game!
    The original Models looked much better, they should have remastered the old effects, too, instead of replacing them. I mean, they could have added CGI beams and explosions and stuff, but the old models simply looked more real.
