    List of Questions:
0:31 -- How can we focus our minds (esp. in environments filled with distractions)?
11:30 -- We have the sense that we have free will, but it is not clear whether we
actually possess free will, or it is just a delusion of the mind. The opposite of free will
is determinism. So which is it?
15:47 -- Is the feeling of having free will deterministic or indeterminate?
    16:19 -- Brahman/God's intent is indeterminable?
17:24 -- Our minds are limited by time, space (and causation). Brahman is beyond
these three. With this in mind, at what level (or in what way) can we conceptualize
    Brahman?
    21:20 -- How are we all-pervading as Brahman/Consciousness?
28:20 -- Why do we search for other alternative ways to think about God when we
already have simple ways given by great souls/teachers such as Sri Ramakrishna?
31:39 -- Is Pure Consciousness (Satchidananda, Brahman) aware of change, aware
of suffering etc., and if so, how is it that It does not change, and/or suffer?
37:16 -- If Sri Ramakrishna was himself an Avatar (incarnation of God), why did he
beg and cry to see God in the form of Mother Kali?
38:55 -- The paradox of the Avatar (Incarnation). Is the Incarnation God or man?
39:48 -- In the story of the Princess of Kashi, the Prince realized that there is no
Princess of Kashi, so there is no question of marrying the Princess of Kashi, but the
desire for marriage still remained. That desire was not vanquished. Please explain.
42:30 -- In Sri Ramakrishna's answer to M's question ""How can I concentrate my mind
(on God),"" the third point was discrimination (""Viveka"") It is interesting to note that
Ramakrishna doesn't say discriminate between the Real and the Unreal (""Satya""
and ""Mithya""), but instead says to discriminate between the Eternal and the
non-Eternal (""Nitya"" and ""Anitya""). Explanation/reasons for this?
45:46 -- What is the relationship between ""Eternal"" and ""non-Eternal"" on the one hand,
and ""real"" and ""false"" on the other? How do you make the jump? "

Indeed, the goal of the spiritual path, the path of No-mind, is to stop being a "spiritual" person. To realise absolute freedom. This is the perennial philosophy and what underlies all valid spiritual paths.
If you are looking for a non religious explanation of this kind of philosophy, look up Bernardo Kastrup on here. Don't mind that he is sometimes seen with charlatan Deepak Chopra. He is a serious philosopher and quite formidable.

    Additional clarifications:
Q1) 0:33 How to focus the mind?
    A) Ashtanga Yoga in general. To focus on God (or anything): a)Immerse your mind in God (or that thing). Constantly think of it, listen/talk about it, be in company of those who are passionate about him. b) withdraw your mind from unnecessary worldly pulls by Nitya-Anitya Vastu Vivek (explained below).
    Q2) 11:30 Free will
A2) Karma theory is based on the idea of free will. As per that, through your choice of actions, you earn karma-phala, or fruits of action which determine your future life & next lives (births). Your current life-situations are based on your action choices in the previous lives. Vedanta accepts Karma theory in the transactional reality, that is this appearing world where body-mind operate.
The most popular verse of Bhagvat Gita, Krishna says - "you've choice of (or right to) actions, but not the fruits of actions"! So, as per all this, humans have free-choice of their actions.
Q3) 17:25 can we conceptualize Brahman beyond space & time?
A3) a) Brahman is never an object. It can never be conceptualized. It is not a thought, you cannot think it. It is the one that thinks (through the mind). b) It is not that you are in space-time & Brahman is beyond so how you can attain it. You are that Brahman. Not the inert body-mind but the real you - that which only can even use the pronoun 'I' - the Consciousness itself. c) Space-time, cause-effect, matter - of which the body-mind is made of and subjected to is within you.
Q4) 31:31 Is Brahman (or pure consciousness) aware of change & suffering?
A4) No. From the point of view of Brahman (absolute reality), the transactional world does not exist. Nothing exists apart from Brahman. The world appears to exist only at the level of the mind (lighted up by Brahman). So only the mind knows suffering, change etc. in the presence of pure consciousness.
Q5) 39:50 Princess of Kashi / desire to get married not resolved
A5) Do not extrapolate from examples. But also, the desire was not 'getting married' to anyone! The Prince falls in love with the Princess of Kashi and intensely desires her. That desire causes suffering. Things to learn: (i) Ignorance of the truth of Princess leads to desire which leads to suffering due to the feeling of incompleteness. (ii) What the Prince desires and searches outside of himself is he himself (iii) knowledge of the truth removes ignorance, removes desire, incompleteness & associated suffering. He doesn't have to pray, meditate, or do any other action (Bhakti, raja, or karma yoga can't help to remove ignorance). Message is same as in the 10th man story.
    Q6) 42:35 About Sri Ramakrishna's Gospel - Nitya/Anitya Vastu Vivek.
A6) Discriminating between permanent/impermanent things. This is the first of the 4 basic requirement in Vedanta for self-realization as laid out by Shankaracharya (Sri RK quotes from there only). This is a way of focusing the mind on God (or Brahman or Atma) & understanding It. Note, that was M's question. How does it work? You start realizing that everything you are chasing is impermanent, will come and go. Any pleasure out of it is fleeting and brings lots of trouble and pain with it. So, you develop Vivek (intellectual maturity) through that discrimination from which arises detachment/dispassion (vairagya) towards wordly objects. The mind leaves these things and starts looking for real thing (God/Brahman/Self)!

I most certainly feel so and I feel during this life of mine - this i the luckiest thing i have ever been blessed with ..to receive and understand Vedanta through the skillful teacher as Swami Srvapriyanada. I hope i meet him one day !!!

"Meditation is to be aware of every thought and of every feeling, never to say it is right or wrong, but just to watch it and move with it. In that watching, you begin to understand the whole movement of thought and feeling. And out of this awareness comes silence."

@ Piletta: That is ONE technique. There are many others.
Vedantic meditation could be as simple as reflecting on`What is watching?` which would then reflect back to the one consciousness.
Alternately try Patanjali`s Yoga Sutras who are the repository of many more techniques.
In the final analysis- whatever suits the `individual`.

Very well explained..time n space are in Brahman. It is isness that is and in that isness everything is 😁 but for us to understand this we have to follow some discipline to clear our mind of past thoughts,memories.. doing that takes us to that point where we get insights and a clear understanding of this simple n profound truth of isness. It's a journey from our body mind awareness to our real self.

No Mind is not a non-thinking mind. It is a paradigm shift in our understanding that all duality and plurality of experiences are only apparent, not real. Consciousness cannot be comprehended in the absence of an object and an object cannot exist independent of Consciousness. This the great illusion of Maya, which is obscuring our understanding of the truth.

Swamiji is consciousness (point of focus identified with subject & object, causes/conditions, manifested as particle, body-mind, senses) different than untouched Awareness (which is the whole field, wave, spectrum of light, sound, existence) and emptiness beyond all that is? Around 34 min. Buddha and Vedanta is interesting.

    Pranams swamiji,
Since most of the time we are having to work in the world n deal with a daily routine the use of mind becomes compulsory leading to living with mind (by default)world the automatic identification happens, although we very well understand that we are not the BM ego,n all this is going to pass away.
How are we to deal with this challenge & stay rooted in the idea that iam Brahman,n these daily routines cannot affect me??

12:20 From an Advaitic point of view, there is FREEDOM, not FREE Will.
53:00 The very temporary-ness, the non-eternal-ity of things, the changing nature of thing's points to the falsety of things. In Vedanta it is called Mithya; in Buddhism it is called interdependence. They are not intrinsically existent; they are devoid of self existence. In Buddhism, it is called Shoonyata; शून्यता सर्व भावानम_ All entities are devoid of self existence. In Vedanta, it says, all entities are appearances; they have borrowed their existence from the real.
    Happy Thoughts, शुभेच्छा।।

The prince realized the Princess was nothing other than himself, so his desire for her evaporated. But if he became aware that all of reality is nothing other than himself, then his desire to marry would also end. So full enlightenment would solve the problem of wanting a bride. He might still marry, and be happy in married life. But he'd be fine if he didn't marry, too. He'd no longer feel that his happiness depended on either path.

      kathleen sutherland
He might still marry, and be happy in married life.
As Swamiji has said, it is just an example or an analogy. You are stretching it beyond the point that the story was meant to illustrate. Remember, it's not about the princess of Kashi or even the prince. The point of illustration was that the desire for the princess evaporates on realization that the princess was non other than the self. Likewise, it's about Brahman and the world. So the whole world is an appearance of Brahman; and YOU are Brahman. If you realize that, it solves all the problems.Because it is not just one object which is an appearance of Brahman. The entire universe is an appearance of Brahman. Now, what object will you desire, or what will you hate?
What a beautiful exposition of the Truth by Swamiji!

Not really interested in challenges personally ; but I should imagine when there are "too many people per square inch" challenge becomes inevitable - this could be where the lines cross between an ethnic and pluralistic existence.

Answer to the first question: How do I focus the mind in a busy city like New York?
To focus the mind one needs to know when, why, where, how, on what, and how many times during the day mind gets distracted. For that I use an online tool at
    Www.hightechmindfulness.com
It works great because once I found out what I was thinking about I instantly saw how to get out if it by working on the causes of distraction.

Swamiji, if there is no freewill, then it amounts saying there is no future lives, then every ignorant will be liberated without any Self knowledge.

If that is the case, your number of rebirths are decided by the Sanchita Karmas. Without Freewill how they got accumulated in the first place?

Questions relating to free will are intrinsically indeterminate, because linguistic in nature.
All problems of knowledge and philosophy are indeterminate at the deepest level for this reason.
Pointless to keep going round in circles with them, yet we do. Time killing I suppose.
And yet this creates a clearing, a void for the metaphysical light.

Hi Linda - there is a lecture by Swamiji on Free Will which was partly based on the article by Chakravarty. Until you get a Link to the original article, the lecture could possibly help. :)
      Cheers.

Thank you, A G, I have watched that lecture, since I watch all of Swamiji's excellent lectures! There is no information there about how to find the original lecture by Chakravarty. I hope that information will be posted at some point. Thanks again.

You are welcome Linda. You could try writing to the 'Ask Swami' email ID - that Vedanta NY uses for the monthly Ask Swami Q&A sessions - and ask SwamiJi on the means to access the original article.
Incidentally, if you have liked Swami Sarvapriyananda's lectures, you may also like the lectures by Swami Paramarthananda. Of all the teachers of Vedanta that I have heard so far, these 2 have been the best, by far. Swami Paramathananda's lectures are available online in audio format (generally) - it may take you some time to get used to his diction - but the depth and quality of his teachings are brilliant. As a sample, you may try his lectures on Mandukya Upanishad -hinduonline.co/AudioLibrary/Discources/CommentaryonMandukyaUpanishadParamarthananda.html .
      Cheers.

at 17.04 when you say 'we are dependant on god' that means we and god are two different entities.. thats what is Dvaita Philosophy. If we are dependent on god how can we say that we are brahman ?
