I got emotional watching this. I’m so happy that there is some footage of John in this role. He was Emmy favorite comedian of all time. I got to see him do stand up live a year before he passed. He talked about this. I miss him so much.
I thought so! We saw "Hairspray" on Broadway towards the end of its run, and Kevin Meaney had graduated to the part of Wilbur, Edna's husband. Edna was played by George Wendt (from "Cheers") and they were both great. We were sitting close, and we could tell that, by the end of "You Can't Stop the Beat," under the heat of the and wearing Edna's heavy fat suit, Wendt looked like he was about to keel over. We were sad when Kevin Meaney died, as he was very funny.
I saw the show when George Wendt was Edna. We were sitting in the mezzanine and I could see his entire quick change through one of the windows of the set piece. It was a really cool moment to see.
The original Hairspray (1988) was not a Broadway musical but simply a film vehicle for Divine, who was part of John Waters acting troupe. Divine was the troupe's resident drag queen. Traditionally, Edna has always been played by a male in drag. From Wikipedia: Hairspray is a 1988 American comedy film written and directed by John Waters, starring Ricki Lake, Divine, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono, Jerry Stiller, Leslie Ann Powers, Colleen Fitzpatrick, Michael St. Gerard, and Ruth Brown. Hairspray was a dramatic departure from Waters's earlier works, with a much broader intended audience. Hairspray's PG is the least restrictive rating a Waters film has received; most of his previous films were rated X by the MPAA.
BEST Edna EVER because of his stage presence and not needing to wear a fat suit. His singing was serviceable and he managed to carry a tune quite nicely.
John Pinette played that role with so much ease and pizzazz. It's too bad he wasn't cast in the movie. I really miss him.
John Pinette was an amazing Edna for sure, but I also love how John Travolta was able to disappear into the role.
Pinette is great but Travolta was perfection as Edna in the movie

I also want to point out that Mr. Pinkey was also a famous stand-up comedian Kevin Meaney.

Harvey's part.
Pinette is perfect in this role. His stand-up is nothing special, but he's without a doubt the star of this play. Thanks for posting this.
Are you sure it's Michelle Dowdy? Because it looks and sounds an awful lot like Keala Settle
That's what I said!!!! Honestly Keala and John Pinette make the perfect duo as mother and Daughter.
@@loveulaterproductions2169 It's definitely Michelle Dowdy :)
@@AlexanderA1995 eh I disagree I know my actresses.
@@loveulaterproductions2169 Well, there's a video of where Kaela Settle and John Pinette were on tour together. But it was merely behind the scenes

This is London's versión?

Ryan French
Keala Settle!!!!!!
Did the first dynamite have like a speech impediment or something?
Why does tracy sound southern. Not saying shes not good, but yeah..
I don't get why they picked a man to play this part, he wasn't playing it gay or trans so why didn't they just cast a woman for John's part ?

But he has no eyebrows.
god! the Australian version is so much better
Glen M nothing can beat the original Broadway and west end production!
Worst Edna ever. John has no musicality and is a try hard for jokes

Holy cow.. the movie is 40x better than this garbage.
Afireinside912 so remember that the movie was based off this
