His mother leans over him,

“Son, my son, child of mine,
They would not have killed you, if it weren’t for the war.
When you were young, your father went to battle,
He laid down his life for Ukraine.
I became a widow, after five children.
You were the youngest, my son Andrew.
I loved you, I protected you,

His old mother is leaning over him,
Crying, shedding tears, she speaks quietly:
"When you were little, your father was fighting,
In a battle, he laid down his life for Ukraine".
And the commander is standing behind the mother.
He is quietly speaking the words to her:
"Don't cry, old mother, my son became a hero,
He laid down his head for Ukraine."
The song describes a young UPA soldier killed in Western Ukraine, who is now lying in the shade of an oak tree, beside a castle in the city of L’viv.
In Ukrainian folk symbolism, an oak is symbolic of strength and health and often represents an older man. This contrasts strongly with the sickly condition of the young man and could be interpreted as the soldier’s late father symbolically watching over his son’s body (parallel to the mother, who also comes to weep over her son). We find out later in the song that the young man’s father was also a soldier (likely killed in WWI, considering the timeline).
