This has been bugin me for a while now does anybody know why there use to be square white boxes between some not all the adverts in the seventies early eighties?

I replied here yesterday but I now see that it is doing that thing here where it claims there is a reply but then the drop down arrow doesn't reveal anything. So just in case my original reply isn't visible to anyone.....
According to a digitalspy user called red16v on forum thread called 'when did the small gap dissappear on advert breaks':
Historically a point was reached where some of the ads in a break were coming off tape and some off film. The break would start off with the film ones complete with inter-ad opiticals then fade off/on to the vt machine for the rest with no opticals. I always thought that looked a bit odd.
So from his information I'd guess that the cuppa soup and mills and boons adverts are being played out from a spliced together film reel with the squares animation at the start and between the two adverts, then the transmission feed was switch to the VT machine for the rest of the adverts on one tape with no splicing or animations.
