There will ALWAYS be a collector's market.
CDs and vinyl refuse to die, and those formats have had the longest battle against streaming. In terms of vinyl it's been about 17 years of continued growth.
For movies, while the mainstream consumer has moved on, for now... the dedicated collector is still out there and will be catered to by smaller labels who don't expect to make billions.
That's how vinyl survived and eventually saw a healthy revival. And it's how physical movie formats will likely continue.

A few things that have happened recently that make this even more sad. First, I actually just bought Avatar Way of Water on Blu-ray for my girlfriend around a month ago from Best Buy after we couldn't find it literally anywhere else. Now Best Buy won't have ANY movies or games to buy next year? Wow... I better start buying more movies on Blu-ray or even DVD if nothing better is available for both her and I because we both love watching movies together. She collects them physically more than I do, but I'm starting to follow right behind her as much as I collect video games for myself because of this AND for the next points of interest...
Second, Target has also confirmed they will no longer be selling or stocking Blu-rays, DVDs or CDs in the near future. With an announcement like this, I'm fairly certain that games as a whole will be next if not go away at the same time at Target as the rest of the discs they claim to no longer support later.
Third, Sony has stopped producing Blu-ray players as of 2020. Sony are the ones that hold the rights to Blu-ray and even they won't make anymore standalone players? That's a HUGE red flag not just for movie-goers, but for gamers to. All modern games on disc are printed on Blu-ray. The PS5 slim already chopped the disc drive as a standard and relegated it to just an add-on device. Even Microsoft has yet to confirm whether or not the refreshed Series X will even have a disc option at all! Sony may not even want to produce anymore Blu-ray discs in the future if this keeps going, making it pretty much another UMD situation where no one produces them simply due to manufacturers no longer existing for them...
Finally, and this can be controversial since this company is in so much hot water all the time, Disney themselves have claimed that they will stop producing their movies and shows on physical media pretty soon. Nothing about games (yet), but I'm pretty sure the gaming industry is already providing them less of a reason to do that to. I'm far from a fan of modern Disney, but their old stuff is still something many out there like myself do like to watch and having it on disc is really important. With a big company like Disney not wanting to print physical movies it only encourages Sony to stop making discs like I mentioned earlier.
It's not just physical games that are disappearing, ALL physical media on the big screen is starting to be purged out of circulation. This is an EXTERMELY alarming trend and the problem is that I feel like none of us have any power to stop it no matter how hard we try. The only thing we can do is keep scooping up whatever physical media is still out there for however much time we have left to do so. Either that or be spoon-fed digital garbage we don't own for "X" amount of dollars per month or year with no other options available. The next generation of gaming is almost certain to be digital only at this point, and it will be the first gaming generation that I'll refuse to take part in. I refuse to spend my money on something I won't own. Period.

@@GamingOffTheGridIt really does suck. What makes it more frustrating is that people call US crazy for paying a premium to buy stuff physically. The thing is that paying a huge premium for a second-hand product may be the only option for collectors in the near future. It may even be the only option for EVERYONE when they realize that movie or game they want to watch/play that came out ten years ago is not available on the digital front because **"fuck you, we don't get enough money for it anymore! Sincerely, [insert greedy company name here]"**. Even worse is that prices are only going to keep getting higher and more ridiculous as time goes on so better to spend $100 for that rare game you want now than to spend $300+ a few years later for the same damn game... :(

But I believe there will always be a strong second-hand market for it, if only just for consumer rights and feeling ownership over things. I'll always be a huge advocate of that.

Physical media going away hurts though. It's gonna suuuuck. I get older and realize the importance of physical so much more. I hate doing the "dance" of jumping between streaming services to find something to watch.
I've even gotten a bit nostalgic for vhs, and bought a vcr, but a decent quality vcr is getting expensive too.
Microsoft just announced their next big console release won't even have a disk drive. So am I going to have to stock pile and extra bluray player just in case?

This has been the film, tv, and game industry's long-term dream, get rid of physical media. Burning disks, recording on cassettes, rentals, re-sales of used products, all of the above, means no money back to the IP owners. With streaming they have 100% control, as you said, and 100% control of who can access what.
So long as streaming is easier, even if it isn't cheaper, we'll keep sliding down. I hope one day (for movies/tv) that becomes as popular as vinyl and now cassette. Vinyl is a great example because everything new comes out on vinyl nowadays, even if its pricey, I'm happy to shell out more to have it forever. I see companies like Criterion doing this exact thing, pushing out high quality releases worthy of a collection for those of us who care about that.

The thing is, people today don’t want to watch movies more than once. There’s just so much content out there and streaming services with endless things to watch. So people no longer have the desire to watch something over and over. And that’s the main reason physical media is dying. It doesn’t make sense for people to buy and store tons of movies on their shelves and have them sit there collecting dust.

This is also puzzling to me because from the outside looking in. Every time a good movie or game comes out. Whenever I go to target, Walmart or best buy. You can usually see they sold a lot of copies of stuff. At times they even sell out.

I still buy Blu-Rays, 4K Blu-Rays, and occasionally DVDs (when a BR is not available) and I really, really hope that even if physical media fades out from the mainstream, that studios continue to issue physical editions for cinephiles, where physical media occupies a space similar to how LaserDisc did back in the day.

My favorite show of all time is Scrubs and one of the best things about the show is the music that they chose for certain scenes. I have seen the show more than enough times to know which songs are about to play for certain episodes. For example, one of my favorite episodes, My Catalyst, involved Michael J. Fox's character getting overwhelmed in the end while Everythingss Not Lost by Coldplay starts to play in the background. This is how the original episode aired and the DVD is the same. The show ended up being on Netflix and when I checked it out, the music in the scene was different! Netflix did not want to pay the money for the copyright music that was in that episode and the same goes for many other episodes. This means people that are watching Scrubs for the first time will be watching a completely different scene with the musical changes that won't have the same impact as the originals.

I have switched to 100% digital games since around 2017, probably the last time I can remember actually buying a physical game. My only regret is not switching to fully digital sooner. I have over 70 Nintendo Switch games, never inserted a game cart once. Both of my Switches are still virgins 😆, also over 200 Steam games. Obviously those are all digital too.
It's just so remarkable to me how PC gamers are seemingly the most satisfied out of all consumers with their platform, and yet they're the platform that has been 100% digital only for about 10 years or more now. Nobody even builds PCs with disc drives, because no one on PC uses them! All the complaints about constantly demanding physical games comes from the same place: 35+ year old guys with consoles. Literally no one else cares. The entire rest of the market has switched to digital only and is happier this way.
With over 200 games on my Steam account, I can play games in 4k 120fps on my PC, or just play them portably with my Steam Deck. I can leave the house with over 70 Nintendo Switch games at the same time thanks to an SD card. Seriously, this shit rules. I remember how much I used to hate having to switch the discs every time and fuddle through my CD book to switch the discs. I'm constantly playing different games and being able to instantaneously switch games is an enormous convenience.
Honestly and truly, at this point I am not convinced these people kicking and screaming over physical games even play games that much or are that into the hobby. I think their hobby is collecting discs and letting them collect dust on their shelf or something. Personally I have no interest in selling any of my games, I want to be able to play any of them whenever I want to, even if it's 10 years from now. With Steam you can always do that, and Nintendo seems to be clearly indicating that the new platform will likely carry over games from the Switch era through the Nintendo account. People who prefer digtial only are more likely than not not only buying more games, they're spending more time playing them too. Like I'm not even going to lie seeing some middle aged guy with a massive shelf full of games just looks pathetic as hell man. You would have to install all those games that are modern on the console to play them anyways, what's the point of taking up all this space? I completely don't understand the point of physical games anymore. It's just plain archaic and I'm glad Gamestop is dying and that Walmart and Best Buy have given up on them. Digital is the future and it rocks baby!

As someone with around 200 4k/ blu ray movies in my collection this is pretty sad to see, I have a feeling a lot of this is amazons fault, if I was to guess I’d say a lot of people are shopping for movies there now but then of course there are the streaming sites and all that. The future looks bleak for all physical media another step in the right direction for the you’ll own nothing and be happy crowd.

What stings for me with movies is that blu-rays give you access to uncompressed audio and visual quality. Even when a streaming service says its 4K, its compressed, it is still better at 1080p on a regular blu-ray even let alone 4k bluray. If you have a nice audio setup at home than having the full Dolby/DTS experience on your shelf is awesome too. Very sad.

Love your show guys, and I while do agree with everything you say.... something to consider is, we're not getting any younger, and we're not going to have nostalgia for a game or movie that comes out in 2030 the same way we did for things when we were kids. Kids in this new world won't know any different, its unfortunate, but they just won't know what an awesome Era they missed out on
