    Good job men!!! Glacier is so beautiful. I did not catch anything in Avalanche Lake either but it was one of the coolest experiences of the 2016 trip. I believe the water temp in the upper end was 42 in July!! Your wildlife footage is awesome!! Keepem coming!!

      Glacier was an unbelievable place! I think everyone in the family was in awe! I have to give credit to my sister for getting the footage of the bear and cubs. Her lens was a bit better for the job and she got some great video of them! Thanks for the support, as always, Craig!

    What did you say? "you literally can't touch one" like to remove the hook? its like falling in a cave and the guide says "uh, well you're really not supposed to touch them"......

      The guide is right. Any handling is dangerous to fish.

    Great video and scenery, reminds me of Jasper and Banff National Parks. We will be stopping in Glacier as I am going to Montana for vacation next July. I am watching your videos( subcribed) to finalize the fishing spots we will try while we will be there, staying near Anaconda. I am also from the East, a little north in Canada. Thanks for the vids.

    Beautifully filmed, and very well done overall. What a wonderful experience. The fish at the 18min. mark were gorgeous! I am for eating the rainbow anywhere in cut territory. Only one thought if you don't mind: Too much false casting will really cut down on your takes.

    nice video-I live near the park and if you head into the backcountry there are lakes and streams with BIG fish....best to overnight it and possibly catch 4 to 5 lb. (and larger ) RB and WSCT....there are books also describing the better fishing if you have time to get out of the "touristy" zones...always beautiful in the park-one of the main reasons we all live up here-I know you had the family along but serious anglers out there should have a night or two to get to serious fishing, incredible scenery, and the record cutthroat (13 lbs.) was caught in the park

    • @BackyardBassin
      @BackyardBassin  5 років тому

      It would have been great to have had time to hit up some of those areas! We love backpacking and it would have been great to have made a trip back into the backcountry! We will add that to the bucket list for sure! Thanks for watching!

      What lakes in particular?

    • @passionateforager4439
      @passionateforager4439 5 років тому +1

      Red Eagle has the MT record for cutthroat-very old record. It hasn't been as good since fires but still big fish. I caught several over 5 lbs. years ago. Gunsight has big fish, fished Medicine Grizzly last year and caught nice fish. Even Hidden Lake up at Logan Pass can be amazing. One could spend the whole summer in the park backcountry going to small lakes and catching big fish. East of the divide at lower elevations better for flyfishing as they are more open country .I have never taken a pole up to Avalanche-I'm glad you did! Also if you are coming from the East their are very productive lakes on the Blackfoot Res-I just started last summer but will be getting my Res license every year now.@@PROCOTRDOCTOR123

    Great video! We were there in the second week of August this year. Wild fires had closed the west entrance, so we were stuck with long drives to the two eastern entrances, but it is beautiful even amongst the smoke..Caught a bunch of cutties floating the Flathead River from Columbia Falls to Kalispell too, great fish!

    I really enjoyed your video. My wife and I went to Glacier 5 years ago after I retired. I could not find out any info on fishing in Glacier anywhere but I always pack a fly rod everywhere I go. We hiked just about every trail there. The scenery is second to none anywhere in the world. My fishing experience was similar to yours but I was lucky enough to catch many beautiful small cutthroats almost anywhere I tried. Definitely a hiking and scenery place to put on your bucket list. Take a fly rod to fish while your wife/partner/family takes a break. Don’t forget your bear spray!!!!

    The most beautiful NP in the lower 48, but I am prejudiced. Lived just North of YNP. Itty bitty fish in that narrow stream. Water so clear because no nutrients to color water or to sustain big fish. You should look at backpacking into high mountain lakes in Beartooths, etc.

  • @jhall2691

    Leave those little trout alone. Fish for the big ones with a hornberg, muddler, gray squirrel tail, white maribou, jassid, adams, cahills, and maybe even some concoction made from feathers on an old lady's hat. My cousin once caught a 16 inch, two pound brook trout on some wet fly that he tied on his first cast.

    Just stumbled across your channel and really enjoy the videos! I fly fish for bass and bream in Texas. Could you do a video explaining your thought process in fly selection when you arrive at new waters?

    • @BackyardBassin
      @BackyardBassin  4 роки тому +1

      We will add that to our list! As a general suggestion, i try to tie patterns that are suggestive, meaning they represent alot of different bugs well. When i get to a new stream i flip rocks and decide what type of aquatic life there is, then start with a suggestive pattern. I will say, however, that presentation trumps pattern selection. Presenting your flies in the right water column, at the appropriate drift speed, etc. is most important! Hope this helps

    Montana resident for +5o years the best fly fishing in my opinion are Big Mo, Gallatin river, Madison, Big hole and the Yellowstone !! but my favorite getaway is with out a doubt is the Mussleshell. Glacier park is my favorite park in the united states, with the Frank Church river being my second choice with Yellowstone NP. love your guy videos, a little more panoramic views would be appreciated !!!
    {Musselshell on fly rod with 3-4 b small mouth is a fisherman's thrill. I have caught the occasional 5 pound bass, what a fight.
    cutthroats up north are plentiful and big, you got walleye 5 pound browns 12" brook and some rainbows. There is also paddle fish in the lower parts. SSSSSShhhhhh secret }

    New rule: if you feel you MUST hold a fish out of the water for a photo op then YOU HOLD YOUR BREATH TOO. HOLD YOUR BREATH THE WHOLE TIME THE FISH IS OUTA THE WATER!!

    • @BackyardBassin
      @BackyardBassin  4 роки тому

      Thanks for commenting. We really take care to make sure fish are handled safely. We unfortunately disagree with your rule as that is entirely too long to keep a fish out of water in our opinion. Just to note, we film in 60 and 120 fps so a clip that might appear as 10 seconds long is in reality only 5 or even 2.5 seconds long in order to achieve our desired frame rate. Thanks for your concern.

    Incredibly gorgeous scenery out there! Thank you for sharing it with us.
    While I sit here in my nice warm house with the below zero temps outside, it's videos like yours that get me excited about Springtime here in Upstate New York.

      @@BackyardBassin I'll be tying a few Green Weenies up over the winter if the temps in my basement shop get above 50. LOL! I think they would do great up here, as we tend to get a lot of inchworms in the warmer months.

      A green weenie is one of my favorite flies to fish in late summer. I even like fishing them in the spring to represent a caddis larvae. It's going to get a bit warmer here in PA in the coming week so maybe you'll get your opportunity

    Hey guys, just wanted to tell you that this is one of my favorite fly fishing videos I’ve ever seen! I’m from Oklahoma but my heart is in N.W. Montana. Been there and loved it! I’m just now trying to learn fly fishing but would love to try it in Glacier National Park. Thank you and keep up the good work!

      All the western mountain states are awesome and beautiful. I recently moved to DFW and it sucks! All these hot, humid,flat mud water states suck ass! Even the bass fishing sucks ass here and texas is supposed to be the paramount of bass fishing. I miss chasing trout in clean cold mountain streams. But now I'm stuck here with citified,muddy lakes getting sunburned just to end up catching nothing but gars and fucking turtles once I got more money I'm getting the fuck out of here

    Holding catch and release fish in the centre, out of the water, with one hand damages their nervous system resulting in a mortality rate of 80% within 3 days of release.

      Sticking a hook in their lips isn't helping them out much either. Unfortunately that is just fishing. All we can do is try to handle the fish as responsibly as possible with wet hands and only a short time out of the water. Appreciate your concern.

    Hard to believe people are netting tiny fish like that. Learn to release fish without netting. Even a silicone or catch and release net dangers the outer slime of salmonids. I'm totally barbless and have released hundreds of fish between 3- 7 lbs easily without ever netting.

    • @BackyardBassin
      @BackyardBassin  5 років тому

      We fish barbless hooks as well. Isn't a rubber net much better than touching the fish with rough hands that contain oils and bacteria? What are your thoughts on fishing multiple flies? How do you stop a flopping fish from hooking itself on another fly or from hooking your own hand? I am of the opinion that a net should be used for the sake of the fish. That seems to be the consensus in the conservation community. Also, putting a hook in a fish's jaw probably doesn't do them any favors either. Thanks for sharing your opinion though

    • @kettlecreekwatershedassoci6995
      @kettlecreekwatershedassoci6995 5 років тому

      You are the first person I have ever seen that has said that rubber nets are bad to use... In order to land the fish by hand do you have to fight it closer to exhaustion? I can't imagine bringing in a 3 to 7 pound fish and landing it by hand without the use of a net. That seems very irresponsible to me as it would likely kill the fish. Please use a net in the future.

    Love Glacier and great vid! Two ideas for better survival of catch and release trout: 1. Use an underwater camera to take your pics with the fish in the water and 2. Use a no-touch catch and release tool, so you never have to handle the fish. TU recommends both of these (never touching the fish and never taking them out of the water) for the best success at survival. I use the "Ketchum Release" tool myself, slides right down the line and unpins the fly effortlessly. There are others, too. Tight lines!!!

    how is that in US with national parks? :D In Europe it is called Nationalpark because it is forbidden to leave marked paths and hunting/fishing is always forbidden. Doesn't seem to be the case in US?

    • @BackyardBassin
      @BackyardBassin  5 років тому

      Hunting is illegal in National Parks, but there are special regulations for fishing to ensure it is a sustainable practice. Also, there are designated trails and it is often illegal to step off the trail to protect vegetation. Thanks for watching!

    Nicely done, guys! I visited the park a couple of years ago, with my daughter, and I didn’t even think to wet a line. And, I recognize a couple of those waters you fished. We also stayed at Fish Creek Campground a couple of days. Thanks our video gets me exited to go back and see all those many parts of the park we didn’t get to visit, and for me to toss a but into the water.
