This biotech video is of great importance because it talks about genetically modified organisms, so biotechnology is a very important branch for this topic. Also known as "Transgenic" are plants, animals or microorganisms in which the genetic material (DNA) that makes them up has been altered, through genetic technology. These techniques allow separating, modifying and transferring parts of DNA from bacteria, virus es, vegetables, animals or humans. -Pacheco Blancas Yuleimi Corin 8B-IBT.

Currently people are uninformed and think that GMOs are bad or unnecessary, but it really is that biotechnology is a great field that allows us to obtain many benefits, such as the production of proteins, genetically modified foods to increase their nutritional content or transgenic plants to improve its characteristics. So it is necessary to inform ourselves and understand that the purpose of biotechnology is to produce a benefit using nature, in order to optimize its obtaining, reducing time, costs and without affecting nature. -Blanco Mariel 8°B IBT

My concern is after altering food, do scientists know how the altered food will react to a person's body long term? There are so many people with cancer. Is it due to genetic altering of food?
There are as so many people with cancer because now we detect it more than before. People used to die and it would be contributed to natural causes or terminal illness. As for genetically altering food, what most of the GMOs do is alter the metabolic pathway by different means. Or make the instructions to produce a certain type of protein. Furthermore, if a product is made commercially available it has had to be reviewed by many scientists and it is controlled to the smallest detail. If anything companies don't want to deal with lawsuits.

But why make color changing flowers in the first place? Just because looking at a simple one coloured flower isn't enough for us? We always want more than we need and as much as it's helped, biotech is many times an excuse for our self indulgence
Scientists have been enamored by the possibilities that genetic engineering suggests since the 1970s, BUT so far in actual practice they are doing more harm than good.
Well, Fred, I'm guessing you're not a diabetic. Or in need of a number of medications that are produced by genetically-modified organisms. It's true that there are legitimate and serious concerns - which are poorly represented by blanket negative statements like yours that only serve to lower the credibility of those who may not be 100% on board the GMO train.
47f0, I'm 75 and was diagnosed as pre-diabetic 3 years ago. I've been keeping it under control NUTRITIONALLY! I understand that scientists are now able to produce insulin through a GMO process. But only ignorant people (including some MDs) would use insulin to lower blood sugar. Taking insulin to lower blood sugar speeds up the process to deeper illness and eventually death. Yep, the multi-millions that Monsanto et al are spending on propaganda is working, UNFORTUNATELY.
May04bwu, I have studied the pros and cons of GMOs. Potentially it seems possible that much benefit might be gained, BUT... so far almost all GMO research and use has been to make plants Roundup resistant leading to damaged soil ecology and glyphosate inside the crop to be consumed, which is so far mainly fed to animals (and it makes them sick), and it is also used in smaller quantities in processed foods for humans. GM plants containing bt toxin is another major application of genetic application -- toxin inside every cell of the plant! EAT UP. Organic farmers use bt (bacillus thurengensis) sprayed on the OUTSIDE of the plant, where it can be washed off -- NOT having the toxin inside the plant. WHAT SUCCESS ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? 1) the "Arctic apple" -- which claim to fame is that it resists browning. What good is that??? 2) GMO insulin -- harmful, I addressed that above. 3) Golden rice -- which contains beta carotene, possibly helpful but I've heard it contains so little as to have minimal benefit. Have the down sides been tested for? Probably not. But this product might be good, maybe. What are all those successes of biotechnology that you referred to???
@Fred Pauser -SUB1 Rice for instance, is very resistant to flooding. -Recombinant HGh, now people that need it don't have to use HGH extracted from corpses. -Artemisin, A medication for malaria, very difficult to sythesise chemically, can be produced in bacteria -Monoclonal antibodies can be produced in plants relatively easily By the way bt toxin is not toxic to humans, so I don't see the problem of having it inside the plant; in fact we eat or use many compounds that are toxic to other species like caffeine, chocolate, paracetamol, antibiotics, etc.
Ethics to me says that personal tastes should not be the reason to insert color changing flowers in an ecosystem even with minimized impact. Encoded living lifeforms are not comparable to hardware running firmware and software because these last are deterministic systems. I believe you have really good intentions, but please let your experience and PhD asside and think deeply on how much do you really know in the name playing arround with beauty and art. Also think actively about GMOs and biased responsability when falling in the wrong hands! My real fear comes from the entity funding the organization that hired you to produce profitable color changing flowers!
Mr. science if humans/animals/plants aren't deterministic like everything else in the universe, what are we? Agents of libertarian free will? From where does any sort of 'will' arise, if not the deterministic material universe (+a little bit of quantum randomness over which there is seemingly no control). You can make a case based on the ethics of interfering with a sentient life form without consent unnecessarily but you were not doing that. If you were, I could see where you're coming from but I think that our enjoyment of nature is actually a rather important part of our life and makes us appreciate it more leaving to fewer unnecessary living beings deaths. We are not imposing pain on a flower by making it change color as far as we know (if our knowledge develops to a point where we could explicitly know it caused the being to experience suffering, then we should probably stop) and for science to progress we need to explore the boundaries of what is possible.
The Ultimate Reductionist. Man, you really have to push it to the top to be the stereoryped annoying vegan? I get your point. I get you are angry. But there are other ways to persuade him to be a vegan. Now, he is at least trying to say something that will change the way people think about things. Just like Mrs. Heavens right here. I'm just saying you shouldn't be that radical and at least Hear his point.
So you can change a plant's flowers in color because YOU think it's pretty. But it would be totally irrelevant for the organism. SO DON'T TALK ABOUT RESPECT, KEIRA, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT MEANS.
I mean..... Is his opinion. I think you shouldn't put him( or her) in a box where you can only be one thing. However i will tell you that Mrs. Heavens practiced a lot this talk and genuinely believes what she says. Not al GMOs are enemies of nature. Think about it, fella.
You don't realize that you are messing with God's creation. You are trying to place yourself in God's position, but He will strike you down. This will have consequences. No GMO!!
He's an allmighty omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent being. Wouldn't he just revert the pretty color-changing flowers back to normal? or burn the orange potatoes so that those poor children in Africa can have their vision problems back?
+Ontha Streetz Do you consider the invention of the light bulb to be "Messing with god's creation" just because it helps provide light like the sun does? If that's the case then i suggest you stop using light bulbs and any electronics in your house. Go back to your cave and your outdated beliefs.
Whatever Don't confuse my opposition to biotechnology with technology in general. Your argument is based on a faulty & very flawed assumption. Try not to be so quick to jump conclusions without first giving analytical thought to a claim, that way you don't seem so ignorant. Biotechnology vs. technology in general. There is a difference. Cave? Outdated? Like I said, your thought process sounds like you've been living in a cave with your outdated and irrelevant claims. Cheers.

Biotechnology is amazing!
Biotechnology is one of the branches of science that brings great benefits to the human race, I hope that more will be invested in the research of this beautiful science.

Biotechnology as a science that contributes a lot to species and ecosystems is very valuable and should have more recognition to further promote this career that will lead us to a more valuable future.

It makes me very happy to see one of the many things that can be done in biotechnology, without a doubt I chose engineering well, biotechnology is very difficult but not only can you decorate the world, but you can also improve the world. I love that I will be able to support the world.

This was so beautiful!💯
It is a wonderful and useful video for me!
Pls tell me whether she has done BSC or BTech .. ? In biotech..which is better?
Ellen Smarter Bsc is more about research and development, so if you are really into the idea of research and working in labs then go for bsc. Btech is more about the engineering and industrial aspect of biotechnology so there’s more kinds of job opportunities. In the end, it depends on what you want to peruse more, industrial development or research. Also, btech is a broader field, so you can go into informatics or business later as well. Hope that helped
@@mariyashabbir5709 hello can you please tell me what are you supposed to do to become a biotechnologist ? Like what undergraduate degree should i get ?
@@aymana.a.5766 there are many biotechnology degrees out there. You can apply for an undergrad in biotechnology but it's a very vast field. So if you already have a specific field in mind you can also do a more specific course, there are enough options! Most countries offer biotechnology programmes just look them up! If you can't find a suitable option then you can also go for related degrees like biology or microbiology etc and then pursue a more specific course at the masters level. I'm from india and we have plenty of biotechnology programmes here, I'm almost done with my degree, will be happy to help if you have any other questions
@@mariyashabbir5709 omg thanks alot ! Im actually from Lebanon and there isn’t any microbiology or biotech undergrad degrees here . So im gonna go with biology and do my masters in biotechnology or microbiology hopefully one day .
@@mariyashabbir5709 plus i wanted to ask you , do you advise me when i finish my undergrad to go in to biotech?
I love tedtalks and always think they justify their points acceptably. however, especially for STEM discussing talks, I think it should be norm that researchers cite their sources when referring to other innovations. because for one, i want the source nd validation of the IBM Watson's research. where, what, when?? I need proofs. and I would love further reading links. thank you team!
just google it
@@smsmrr what's wrong w u lmao
1. they're here to spread information, I think making it more accessible and believable is only going to help that cause.
2. i had spent about 20mins on Google searching for this and I found nothing other than factual discrepancies in the timeline- it seems that this was somehow posted EARLIER than Watson was a thing (can be an 'info released at later date' problem), but still NOTHING related to the talk. hence.
@@sanchitagolder just use google scholar to look up articles, it's not that hard
@@smsmrr honey, i did. that's what i did, what else does anybody do to look for peer-reviewed information? i didn't find anything, it wasted my time, and reduced my trust (my bio teacher already is against tedtalks as a definite source)
that's why i am saying that external information should be cited, like other science channels do.
i know it's not hard.
@@sanchitagolder have you tried refining your search?
Try again I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for :)
I think she is beautiful! 😅
Yeah Biotechnology is beautiful... And we should use this power for the betterment of human beings ... When there is any need for the people then scientists should step forward.... Otherwise for their wanting to do crazy experiment scientists should not play with the natural balance...
they aren't harming anything they are jut making new things you never know when it might come in handy...
Superb maam👍
'BuiLD tHe wOrlD wE waNT tO seE'
Can't you see the beauty in what's already there? Naturally?
I agree that there are beautiful things, but we must tread lightly else we unleash unforeseeable outcomes that can reak havact on the world.
havoc
Go preach your bullshit to yourself & all the other billions of MEAT-EATERS & BREEDERS who overpopulate & needlessly murder animals for meat when you can & should go vegan for antinatalist animal rights instead.
Biotechnology can be beautiful unless it falls into the wrong hands
a wizard that is strange Lol too many marvel movies huh?
Btech genetic engineering vs bsc genetics which is best to do research
You might want to do your masters degree abroad! For that you need to have a four year graduate degree.
Thank you
I like schnitzel and pears. Can't we make beautiful schnitzel pears. I a biologist . I thing biology of veterinary and medicine have many openings for gmo beauty that could make swine smell less. Beauty
Why doesn't Bill Nye like GMO's? What aspect does he accept/reject?
Cody Arnold he's more of a physicist
Dr Tomtom lol he’s just an actor
Cody, Bill Nye has said a few years ago that he was wrong to be critical about GMOs and now supports their use in a wide range of applications, including food growing and processing.
Biotech is great. But we wont have Great biotech professor for a good hundreds of years. Awell.. I'll be dead by then. But atleast I lived in the era where it all began haha
Good
"Biotechnology can be beautiful!!!!"
Says the replicant Keira Havens.
yeah...Bio Technology is Beautiful B.B.
please cure diabetes
Sure
Edit: its done :)
You are so Beautiful
Actually she is saying that she has disturbed the nature.
I found the girl beautiful
Why do you think so? You just seem to not have enough information about all the success biotechnology has had :)
@Fred Pauser
-SUB1 Rice for instance, is very resistant to flooding.
-Recombinant HGh, now people that need it don't have to use HGH extracted from corpses.
-Artemisin, A medication for malaria, very difficult to sythesise chemically, can be produced in bacteria
-Monoclonal antibodies can be produced in plants relatively easily
By the way bt toxin is not toxic to humans, so I don't see the problem of having it inside the plant; in fact we eat or use many compounds that are toxic to other species like caffeine, chocolate, paracetamol, antibiotics, etc.
You are very Beautiful
Tasty - Daddy like!🤒
Love u sweetheart welcome

Man said welcome
Yea you are making a itchy gmo..allergies
Interesting topic, but she was incredbily boring.
Not beautiful than the lecturer 😍
GMO is playing God, He didn't and never does make mistakes, we do
Ethics to me says that personal tastes should not be the reason to insert color changing flowers in an ecosystem even with minimized impact.
If you are not an antinatalist animal rights vegan like I am, you have nothing important to say.
Change YOUR actions first.
Mr. science if humans/animals/plants aren't deterministic like everything else in the universe, what are we?
We dare to engineered The God's creation..
So you can change a plant's flowers in color because YOU think it's pretty.
But it would be totally irrelevant for the organism. SO DON'T TALK ABOUT RESPECT, KEIRA, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT MEANS.
reptilespantoso vegetarian are vegetarian not because they love animal, but because they hate green,,,plant...
i cant stand this woman another second
She is such a bragger, ow yes I made it, I am the best, I am a scientist. Bla Bla Bla.
Its not a big job making white to yellow vit a , any 1 can do it. do something new!!
However it is a great example for what biotechnology can do for the people which is somehow the point of this talk :)
This is the worst ted talk ever
Let me guess? GMOs are made by the devil? This is unnatural?
You are delusional. You have no comprehension of how misfounded your position is on this technology. Wake up to the real world lol.
+Ontha Streetz almost everything humanity creates is messing with god's creation
Cheers.
